I have an IT job, am in quasi-training for my MCSE. Company is paying for
class, but has made no mention of the exams. So, as a result, I will not be
taking them unless the company is paying for them...or the MCSE becomes a
well respected cert again. So, I guess I'm in training, but will have
nothing to show for it, except for lost Tuesday and Thursday nights through
the end of the year...

It is true that professional IT don't make hourly wages (except when you do
consulting works which I charge $85/hr. :-)). About MCSE certification
nowaday, I totally agree with Jar. MSCE certification has been downgraded so
much latelly because the IT field has been flooded with "MCSE on PAPER". I
wish Microsoft woudl have done the same things like Cisco which requires
hands on lab exam, and recertification. Plus, a lots of MCSE trainning
places are bogus. All they need are getting your money and selling their
trainning book. I got my certificaiton 6 years ago through experiences at
work and self-learning MCSE books. Didn't even need to pay a dime for
classes :-). By the way, just got myself certified for the CCNA yesterday.
Yeehaaa...

MCSE means squat. It all depends on what you can do. I know folks making
80K a year that don't even touch Microsoft equipment. I know others
making 30K with MS certs coming out of their ears. It's all what you can
prove you are able to do.

If you want to make the big bucks, you need to specialise. I hear Oracle
gurus make insane money. Of course, they usually commit suicide or pickle
their livers long before retirement age, but there ya go.

Re: OT Pay by The

The

Aye,...they do indeed. As for what an MCSE does or specializes in?? Hmm well
nothing really. I'm mean sure I have 3 MCSE's with my designators in
Messaging and Security. But like JaR said MCSE is not a job description.

For example Dell is hiring for Tech Support MCSE Preferred. That pays about
13 bucks an hour. The Best Buy Geek Squad program started putting all their
Techs through at least A+ and the Windows XP MCP Program, and I'm sure they
don't make much of anything, not they they should cause I've met a few of
those guys....

As for me? Well the last contract I was offered was somewhere in the
neighborhood of living expenses in Seattle plus $65 per hour for 3 months.
And as for fulltime jobs...Well I get about one or two offers a week in the
$80-105 range. Among others...

Does any of that have to do with my MCSE? does it have to do with the fact I
have a couple dozen Certifications? not entirely...The Certs bring the
attention of new blood, but these offers come to me because I am who I
am....That and the fact I have friends in all the right places. :-)
