I have a W2K sp4 server running in remote admin mode. I can't login
remotely. I get the standard unable to connect server may be too busy
message. I am a member of admin group. I verified that terminal services is
running as a service however I cannot stop and restart the service because
it is grayed out. I tried changing it from automatic to manual and still
can't stop and restart. If I run netstat -a port 3389 isn't listening. I
installed vnc and I can logon once with it but after one time I can't logon.
After a reboot I can logon once again. Do you think I need to uninstall and
reinstall TS? If anyone has anything else I can try I would appreciate
hearing about. Thanks.

Have you done any security updates between the last time you logged in
successfully and now? What about dependent services -- have you checked
for them and are they running? Any event log entries that look
intrigueing?

I don't think it would hurt to reinstall TS.

No security updates and the logs are clean. I'll check on the dependent
services. Thanks.

I think that the only service that Terminal Service depends on is RPC.

Check to make sure that the RPC service is running. If it's not, you'll want
to figure out why...and it might not be pretty. Blaster and LoveSan both
fukc with RPC, so it's possible that you have your work cut out for you on
this one.

The reason I asked about security updates is because we had one recently
that turned off the RPC locator service and some stuff stopped working.
Turned it back on again and magic!

RPC service is running. I uninstalled TS, rebooted, installed TS, rebooted

According to the following article you aren't supposed to be able to
start or stop Terminal Services from the services console:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;278657

Here's a possibility:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329155

Or this (look at explanation for very last error message):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246109

The sheer amount of irony actually caused an overflow, and there's a puddle
of it right over there ->

Not only was "punctuation" spelled wrong in a post about spelling, but the
whole point of his message was lost, because in the previous post, he
actually wrote the word "ROFL". ROFL! Seriously. "ROFL WAFFLE". Come on,
ROFL isn't a word.

Now, ROFLCOPTER is a word.
