Am I on the right track?
I have completed MCSE 70-290, and I am planning to finish these specific
tests in the following order:
70-291
70-270
70-284
70-293
70-294
Can anybody tell me if by completing all these tests I will be able to
obtain the MCSE certificate? I just want to make sure so I won't take the
wrong tests.
I also want to verify how Microsoft keep track of my academy goal. I know I
have a Microsoft transcript, but I am not sure how Microsoft determine when
to issue my certificates. As you see from the above tests list, if I take
the tests in such order, I am going to qualify for a MCSA first, then after I
pass the last two tests I will get MCSE. Is it right that after I pass
70-284, my Microsoft will automaticall send me a congulation email telling I
have obtained MCSA certificate? More specifically, do I need to declare to
Microsoft right now that I am planning on MCSA or MCSE? (just like I did in
school to declare my major).

MCSE or Specialised MCSE
Hi. I am just about to sit my last few MCSE 2000 exams and am undecided
whether to complete the modules for a straight MCSE or whether to go for
MCSE: Security. They both have very similar overlaps, although I am
particularly interested in the Security side and have no problems with the
content of either. Can anyone suggest any advantages of one over the other
?
I also want to sit the upgrade exams to complete upgrade to an MCSE 2003.
Are any issues upgrading MCSE: Security 2000 to MCSE: Security 2003 compared
with the upgrading the straight MCSE ?

[Media] Commentary: How About a Useful MCSE Certification?
Hopefully someone from MS is actually reading this group.
-----------------------------
by Mark Minasi, senior contributing editor, Windows IT Pro magazine
I recently had a chance to talk with the attendees of an MCSE boot
camp during the last half of their 2-week-long journey from
uncertified to MCSE, and it opened my eyes to an awful truth: The MCSE
certification is here to stay. Anyone who's read my articles about the
Microsoft certification programs over the past 10 years knows that I'm
troubled by the notion of a certification controlled by a vendor. But
I guess people like having letters after their names, and human
resources (HR) departments often don't take the time to evaluate
people for their experience, preferring instead to filter people based
on the letters after their names--so I surrender.
But if we're going to have certifications such as MCSE, Cisco
Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and the like, why not make them
useful? Why not teach people what they'll actually need and use,
instead of using Microsoft certification tests as a means of
showcasing every Microsoft technology, no matter how little it's used?
Along those lines, here are a few thoughts:
- Skip the technologies that almost nobody uses. Do we really need
as many questions about NTBackup as are on the server test? Sure, I
use the tool because it's free and I'm cheap, but most folks use a
third-party backup tool. Ditto for SNMP, Internet Authentication
Service (IAS), RRAS, PPTP, and Microsoft Certificate Server. I'm not
saying that they're not good implementations of SNMP, Remote
Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS), IP routing, or VPN. But
in my experience, most folks go to non-Microsoft vendors for those
things. The Infrastructure test's depiction of a firm's multisite
network built using a Windows server as the backbone IP router is
ludicrous, and asking people to design networks in an imaginary
universe in which Cisco Systems, Check Point Software Technologies,
and a host of other vendors don't exist is silly. Worse yet, imagine
if a freshly minted MCSE were to actually recommend and try to
implement an all-Microsoft solution. Yikes.
- Focus on products and technologies that everyone uses or would
use if they knew how. Which services can you safely disable on a Web
server? How do you set up and, more important, back up and restore a
share configured with one of Windows Server 2003's most attractive new
services, Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)?
Part of the MCSE certification is a mandatory test on the most
recent version or two of Windows NT Workstation; as far as I know, you
can currently get your MCSE with either the Windows XP Professional
Edition or Windows 2000 Professional tests. But much of the real world
still uses (and probably will use for a long time to come) Windows 9x.
I use and like XP, but I wouldn't force my clients to use it. If a
customer wants to use Win98, then I should be able to support it, and
the Win98 test ought to be a valid substitute for the XP or Win2K
tests for MCSE candidates.
- The exam should include questions about limitations in Microsoft
software. For example, how can you give a user permissions to create
and modify files in a folder but prevent that user from being able to
delete files in the folder? Answer: In a practical sense, you can't
because most file-oriented applications let you modify files by
clicking File/Save, and that command first saves the current document
in memory to a new file. Then, the application deletes the old file
and renames the new file to the old file's name. Here's another
example (this question is probably the number-one question I get from
ex-Novell administrators): I've created a share that contains several
folders. I set NTFS permissions on those folders to give different
groups of users different access levels. How can I keep Windows from
showing users folders to which they're denied access? Answer: You
can't. How can I configure a user's copy of Microsoft Office Outlook
2003 to support full remote procedure call (RPC)-style connectivity to
a Microsoft Exchange Server server when the user has more than one
mailbox on the Exchange server? You can't. How can I set different
password requirements for groups in a domain? Again, impossible.
Asking questions such as these prepares a would-be Microsoft expert to
be able to support people in the real world.
- When necessary, discuss third-party software. Remote Installation
Service (RIS) is a neat product, but I only rarely come across clients
that use it to roll out desktops. Most administrators couldn't care
less about RIS; they use Symantec's Norton Ghost or similar product.
So why not include a thorough set of questions about using Sysprep and
Ghost in the XP test? And include questions about backup. It's a good
idea to ensure that people can use some kind of backup tool, but not a
good idea to require that they understand NTBackup. Why not require
that the test subject answer three questions about backup, but let him
or her choose whether to answer them about NTBackup, VERITAS
Software's Backup Exec, UltraBac Software's UltraBac, or some other
major backup software?
- Don't ask memorization questions; isn't that what Help is for? I
recall a question in the NT 3.5 TCP/IP test that asked what command
will dump NetBIOS names for a host, given its IP address. I knew that
Nbtstat was the command, and that the option was either -A or -a, but
I couldn't remember which one. (-A takes IP addresses; -a takes host
names. I don't know why it's not smart enough to handle either
parameter--Ping, Nslookup, and a few dozen other IP-related utilities
can process either.) I found the question infuriating. What's the
point of the "/?" command if I'm expected to memorize parameters?
Similarly, the Win2K test asked something about the accessibility
tools, a question that I could easily answer in about three clicks,
had I access to a Win2K desktop. That's the whole point of a GUI.
Just imagine: If these tests really tested useful knowledge, then
these certifications would be worthwhile. Of course, it'd be far
better if the certification were controlled by an independent
nonprofit third-party organization, but you can't have everything. Tag: 70-290 Tag: 153601

70-291: Wrong VLSM study question?
Hi to everyone,
following a question from a 70-291 study exam, with the suggested correct
responses.
I belive these responses are wrong.
First take a look at the question:
----------------------------
Your organization has leased the Class C network 199.205.15.0/24. You are
subnetting this network
using VLSM. Your routers support the zero subnet and the longest match
algorithm. You ask one of
your support staff to design a subnetting structure, but when she submits
this you suspect that some
of the network/subnet mask allocations are invalid. Which of the following
are not valid networks?
(Choose all that apply).
1. 199.205.15.64/25 <Correct>
2. 199.205.15.8/27 <Correct>
3. 199.205.15.130/26 <Correct>
4. 199.205.15.192/26
5. 199.205.15.40/28
6. 199.205.15.96/26
----------------------------
AFAIK, looking at the last octet of the above addresses and masks,
199.205.15.64/25 equate to
01000000 address
10000000 mask.
This mean not all host bits are set to 0, so this is not a valid network.
The same goes for:
199.205.15.8/27
199.205.15.130/26
199.205.15.40/28
199.205.15.96/26
The only valid network is 99.205.15.192/26.
What do you think?
Kind regards,
Corrado Tag: 70-290 Tag: 153588

Migration of a WIN2000 "native mode" domain to WINSERVER 2003 doma
Hi to all.
This is my scenario.
In our company we have a "SINGLE DOMAIN - MULTIPLE SITES" Windows 2000
"native mode" domain, running Active Directory.
There are, currently, 4 sites with 6 DC's.
The situation is as follows.
FIRST SITE
=======
In the first site (the company headquarters), there are TWO DC's and one of
these is the OPERATION MASTER for the forest, the MAIN DNS, etc.
The second DC' is a second CG server but it is only a simple file server
SECOND SITE (located at 20 km from the first site)
=========
In the second site, there are other TWO DC's, one of these runs the GC, DNS
for the site, WINS, DHCP, etc.
THIRD SITE (located 150 km from the first site)
=======
Only a single GC DOMAIN CONTROLLER to serve the internal LAN
FOURTH SITE (located 200 km from the first site)
=========
Only a single GC DOMAIN CONTROLLER to serve the internal LAN
All the sites are connected via HDSL links (2 Mbits) and replicated to the
first site regularly every THREE HOURS with the operation's master DC.
All works well, no problems.
Now, we have decided to migrate all the entire domain to the WIN 2003
platform, but, obviously, we have many hundreds of users and computers and
we
would like to migrate to the new environment without problems.
So, the great question is: what are the steps to do to make a successful
migration?
Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance to all!!
Bye Bye.

Effects of Updating the Active Directory Password Policy
When one increases the password length of the password policy in
Active Directory at the domain, how does Active Directory treat
accounts with passwords still using the former minimum length?
For example,
If I increased the minimum password length from 7 to 10 characters,
how would this change affect accounts that are currently using
passwords of 7 characters in length?
Would it force them to change their password the next time they login
or would it wait until the next time they changed their password to
enforce the new policy?
How would it affect local accounts on member servers and workstations?
Would it force them to change their password immediately or wait
until the next time they change their password to enforce the new
policy?
Is the domain policy even applicable to local accounts on member
servers and workstations?

Is the MCSE for me?
I interested in doing my MCSE, however am wondering if this is the best path
at the moment in terms of price and value to a company.
I've been doing desktop support for a couple years, and 2 years of server
support on Microsoft Server Enivorment. Working with Exchange 5.5/2000,
Active Directory, Terminal Services, Security & Policy management and ISA. I
have a decent understanding of these products and technologies and was
thinking that the MCSE would be an ideal way to concrete my knowledge in this
area.
What do you guys reckon? Having travelled for the last 5months and landing
up in Australia, money is pretty limited. Will the MCSE be a good value for
money investment or should I look towards other certifications. Tag: 70-290 Tag: 153367
In what order should I take MCSE tests?
Hi,
I'm a little confused about the order in which it makes sense to take MCSE
tests. If I go by exam numbers from the lowest to highest. For example exam
70-290 is "Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Environment" on the other hand exam 70-293 is "Planning and Maintaining a
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure".
Shouldn't planning come first? So does it mean I should take 70-293 first or
do I go by exam numbers?

FS: 1 MCSE security exam voucher expiring 11/30/04 - legit offer - ebay sale fell through
I am selling 1 voucher good for 1 free exam for only 70-214, 70-220, 70-227,
70-228, or 70-299.
IT EXPIRES in 2 days, but if you sign up today or tomorrow and have time to
take the test, then you will benefit from a great discount.
I am a legit seller that listed it on ebay at
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5141105492
But my newbie buyer ignored that I couldn't take credit cards and now won't
be making payment in time to use it. So if it doesn't sell today or soon, it
goes to waste.
If you can pay via paypal w/o credit card in time to make use of this
(today, early tomorrow) then I'll send you the voucher # in email and you
can have it.
I'll accept best offer over $55. (US). No foreign currancies, etc. I'd be
willing to set the transaction up as a private ebay auction that ends ASAP.
Thanks. Tag: 70-290 Tag: 153363
