Hello. I'm currently studying for the MCSE 70-290 using
the demo version of win2k3 enterprise. I currently have
the Microsoft Press Self-Paced study guide and the exam
cram 2. If I study these books, do the examples and walk
throughs they give on my server (like, configurations,
administrations, backups, restores, etc ), how confident
should I be that i'll pass the actual exam? I'm making
80's and 90's on the test exams that both books give, but
i'd say more than anything it's just because I remember
the answers (i have a pretty good photographic memory..).
With this being the case, you should probably see how I
don't want to base my good performances on being able to
just remember answers or terms that the books describe.
Basically what I'm asking is, Is there anyone out there
that knows if these 2 books will cover enough of the exam
that I can pass it, or is there something else I need to
study that these books don't cover? Thanks.

I found the MS self paced training kit to be a good book that seems to cover
all the key points. What I did like mostly were the labs. I am using this
kit along with a copy of test prep from transcender.. I will let you know
how I made out on the exam.. I am schedule to take the exam on Tuesday>>

The MSPress is surely not enough. You should study a lot of TS and a few
VBScript. The Transcender's tests are a good "termometer" to measure your
knowledge.

I have only used the MSPress and the Measure Up tests that came with it. I
have passed with a score of 729. It was not a good score but I passed. It
should be easier if I had studied from other sources (mainly TS).

Was just wondering if you had taken that test yet, and if
so, how you did.

You are right, I was hit with a few questions on TS and a
few on Basic and Dynamic disks. I find the questions
near the end had a lot of reading, had 20sec to spare.

Hi, Jonathan
I fail today by 10 point got 690.. I have had the worst test in my life !
the testing center was down when I got there ONLY for my test , apprently
they could'nt download this actually test, so I decided I then reschedule
with another testing close by after wait about an hour got there had to
wait another hour to begin..half way through my test the W/station crashed
on me , this testing center was using some of the oldeest equipment Pent II
HP vectra VL. ...I won;t even accept these machine for free if they were
giving it to me..:-). I wate anthor 15 mins or so to contuine taking the
test since machine need to be rebooted, luckly I did'nt have to start from
the begining.. Then after all that crap .. I failed by 10 point .. I ran out
of time..and to top it off heading back to my job after failing the exam I
was rear end by some young kid, which does'nt even have a valid drivers
license.. now to make matters even worst.. I yes it does get worst , I just
wated $125 since my company is not going to pay for it..Yes I can say I had
have one of those days:-)
Here's what I had on the test .. I have quite a lot of questions on backups
and terminal server, also one question on POSIX..Here is what I recall from
memory If you change a primary group status via ADUC within the user
properties to posix... a) would need to remove and add the users again b)
change the group to unversal c) enable smtp at the site and on more I
forgot not sure what the correct answr is?? also know ASR and driver signing
option how to set via GPO..
Well hope you have beeter luck than I did.. I am taking the exam again this
week.. there is an old saying strick while the iron is hot.. I'm going to
give this a try..

catch you later..

sorry about your luck but you should take that up with the testing corps.

Jesus I hate to hear that man. Sounds like you had one
hell of a bad day =\. Honestly though, if you only
failed by 10 points, I would definately take that test
again. Sounds like it was just a bunch of bad luck for
you instead of actual lack of material. Thanks for the
tips man. As far as the question, I think the answer
has to be b)change the group to unversal. Good luck on
the next go around. I finally have 4 pc's setup at home
and will probably wait until the end of the month to take
mine. Thanks again for the tips and sorry for the bad
luck you had :\ (btw, for the teenager, I would probably
have him castorated).

Hey, Guys..
Good news passed 70-290 after my 2nd wack at it.. got 785.. whoopee..Overall
I think the exam questions were very realistic and practical .. good job MS
atleast you're listening to our concerns and moving toward a more practical
and realistic question.. The only question I did not like on the test which
seems to be irrelevant were the RAID question.. No one really uses MS /OS
raid on their server.. Every server I install use hardware raid.. In my
opinon these questions should be removed from the exam,.. No need , since
no one really uses software RAID..
Just my two cents...

ROCK on man! Congrats! I finished my Exam Cram 2 Book
and CD and halfway through the MS Press Book. Hopefully
I'll be able to pass myself heh.. Only good thing I
could say about the Exam Cram 2 book is that they
actually go a little further into detail on RAID than the
MS Press book has for me..
