    - Some of you test takers are idiots ! ! ! Some of the best test takers are the worst employees. Passing the tests does not mean your a great network admin or computer technictian. It just means your good at taking tests, period. I've been a PC/Network Technictian for 8 years, and I can't pass any of the tests. And probably never will be able to. The company and companies I work for do not use Win2000 and WinXP operating systems the way the test books do. In my 8 years I have probably not seen 5% of what is in the test books. The roll-playing situations that the test books show are not in the real world. And you will probably never come across any of those situations.     - It's Funny Just a thought for all you kia out there. Been reading quite a few of these posts the last couple of weeks and it's funny to me how people come in here ask a question and get shot down by you know it all people. Some of us are trying to make it in the it field and would like a little help. If your not willing to help don't post, but don't degrade people for wanting to know more. Knowledge is king and some of us are trying to learn. To those of you that are biting at the bit to reply flame away. I'm ready for it, but next time somebody come in here and asks something think of where you were 10, 15, or 20 years ago in your search for the answer.     - XP config - error message THANKS IN ADVANCE ! error message : Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system you can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original Setup CD Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair I have purchased a Toshiba Sattelite 1135 laptop with Windows XP Home "imaged" on the system by Toshiba. I have the 'Windows Authentication" sticker on the bottom of the laptop with the CD Key code. However Toshiba says they cannot send me the Original WIN XP Home CD version. I have tried to use a different WIN XP CD but it this system does not recognize the CD, then loops back to the error message. I tried "safe mode" and no luck. It seems the system only wants to recognize only the particular Win XP CD on my PC (?)     - Dual Booting 2000 and 2003 What's the best way to dual boot Windows 2000 Pro and Windows 2003 Server? I want the 2000 to be (semi-) permanent, but the 2003 server is temporary because it's a eval copy that blows up eventually, and because I want it to study with and I suspect I'll kill it in my own little way. I want 2003 on a different partition that I can re-format/re-install. Is there anything I need to be aware of? If I were to re-format the 2003 partition, do I need to modify anything (boot.ini, for example) in order for 2000 to load properly? Does it matter which OS gets installed first? Is it too late on a Friday for these questions? And what are the requirements for MCSE anyway? (sorry, I figure certain regulars are pulling their hair out and I wanted to finish them off...).     - father-daughter talk Father-Daughter Talk A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat and was for distribution of all wealth. She felt deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican which she expressed openly. One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to higher taxes on the rich & the addition of more government welfare programs. Based on the lectures that she had participated in and the occasional chat with a professor she felt that for years her father had obviously harbored an evil, even selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his. The self professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He stopped her and asked her point blank, how she was doing in school. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because of spending all her time studying. That she was taking a more difficult curriculum. Her father listened and then asked, "How is your good friend Mary doing." She replied, "Mary is barely getting by." She continued, "She barely has a 2.0 GPA," adding, "and all she takes are easy classes and she never studies." "But Mary is so very popular on campus, college for her is a blast, she goes to all the parties all the time and very often doesn't even show up for classes because she is too hung over." Her father then asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct ! a 1.0 off your 4.0 GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2. 0." He continued, "That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."     - Unaible to join domain Hello! I am studying for exam 70-290. I have a small lab at home, which consists of 3 PC's, running different OS: WinXP Pro, Win 2003 Server, and Win 98. The 2003 installation is "fresh", since 5 days, but the problems came very soon. I am unable to join my XP machine to the domain. Here is some background information, that describes the scenario. The 2003 PC is a Domain controller, and the NIC settings are: TCP/IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet:255.255.255.0 DNS: 192.168.0.1 No ICF is running. The XP Prof: 192.168.0.11 255.255.255.0 DNS 192.168.0.1 Win 98: 192.168.0.15 255.255.255.0 No DNS. So, when I try to ping from the XP to 2003, I receive request timed out. There is no communication between them. At the other hand, there is no problem between XP and 98. I have eliminated cable and adapter problems: I have changed the network cable. So, I have tried to duplicate the IP address of XP and 2003, something 192.168.0.11 at them both, and have received error message: There is conflict at the network. That means, there is communication between the machines, and there is no hardware problem. I have removed IP security policies in order to permit unsecured connections between the PCs - nothing changes. So, please give me some advice: where could be the problem, how to troubleshoot this situation. Is there any tool, that I can use and see if the in- and out-traffic of the 2003 is blocked?     - 70-219 Just a couple of questions that anyone who has taken 70- 219 can hopefully answer... Firstly... is this exam 4 hours? when I was taking 70-217 I was in a room with a guy doing 70-220... the administrator at the test centre told me Id be done way before him as he was in for 4 hours (does this apply to all the design exams?) Second... From reading posts/checking info on the net I get the overall view that 70-219 is four case studies...with approx 10 questions per case study. If you complete case study one... then go onto case study 2.. you cant go back and change your answer on CS1 etc etc I've had a good exam technique that has worked well through all the other exams... as this is my last exam I dont want to screw up because the exam format throws me! I understand that it must be a SecureNAT client and that it is responsible for it's own DNS resolution. I must be doing something wrong because the browser is telling me that the "specified server could not be found" whenever I try to surf to an external site. I have specified a DNS server outside local network in the Mac's TCP/IP properties (we have an internal DNS server that handles resolution for internal clients), but from what I can see, ISA is not passing the request through to the external DNS.     - MBSA. Script Guys, I need to install MS Baseline Analyzer onto a few machines and create a script that uses the cmd line version to generate reports every week. Easy enough yeah. The problem lies with the download of the latest .cab file which MSBA does each time you start a scan. Because I need to authenticate to the proxy the download fails. So.. is there a way to run ie from a cmd prompt and point it at the http://<cab file url> and automatically download the file to a set location? Or.. is there a way to do it with VBS?     - 2003 mcse cert First apologies for the long post. Need a little help with obtaining my cert. I'm not new to networking or computers but have never worked in the it field. Looking to break in and get a job, but living in the utah area it seems everybody wants experience or certs before hiring anybody. I am studying for the 290 test right now. Bought the ms press study guide for this and it seems to leave quite a bit of info out that is on the pratice tests. So I bought the admin compainion and it has helped a lot. But I still can't seem to grasp the subjects in the pratice tests. Is there any better books out there for this test? and why? Also is there an easier test out there to start with that would get me my mcp but also count towards the mcse? Also maybe some of you have seen this also. It seems that some of the practice test questions from ms press have more than one answer. After researching my answers that I got wrong you could go about it that way it is just the long way to do it. Maybe they just want the answer their way? anyway. One last thing. If there is anybody out here in Utah that is willing to give a hard worker interested in getting experience a part time job please let me know. Funny how, when searching for good reference material for 299,
everything that comes up (sparse as it is) is good wholesome refernce
material. I haven't had to weed through the pulp novels promising
perfect test results at all.

BTW, the MS Training Kit for this one is an excellent read and will
earn a coveted spot in my toilet library even after writing the test
next month.
