Hi all

I upgraded a Windows NT4 Server to W2000 Adv. Server and my IIS server stopped working. I also installed W2000 SP4 and Internet Explorer 6.0. I tried to uninstall IIS 5 and install it again, but no results. Other symptoms: I have no metabase.bin (nor metabase backups) in my hard disk. I installed metaedit 2.2 I get an error trying to start it: "A fatal error occurred trying to connect to LOCALHOST".
I also get errors when I start the server machine, in the event viewer: "the service metabase path /LM/W3SVC/ could not be opened". I get the analog errors for MSFTPSVC, SMTPSVC and NNTPSVC. Also: "The system cannot find the path specified" for all of them
The strange thing is that even uninstalling all the IIS 5 and reinstalling again it happens the same....

Any light on this please

Thank you.

Obvious solution - Restore from the tape backup you made before
upgrading.

Possible fix - Remove IIS, reboot. Delete the Inetpub and the Inetsrv
folders and all contents. Reboot. Install *all* security fixes and
service packs. Reboot. Reinstall IIS. Make sure you're a local
admin on the box.

Hi Jeff.

No luck. I did it already. The "possible fix", I mean. The backup is an option, of course, but I was just curious about the subject. For me it's something related to the lack of metabase.bin. I was wondering if there was any method for building up a metabase.bin file from scratch.... or something like that.

The "Possible fix" section did the trick for me

Note that in order to delete the \windows\system32\inetsrv directory, I had to download ProcessExplorer from http://www.sysinternals.com so I could close winlogon.exe's handle to said directory. Once that was done, I could delete the directory. After rebooting, the directory appeared again. I can only assume it was created by another process because I'm sure that I deleted it. In any event, the newly created instance of the folder didn't cause any further problems

I tried the install again and had complete success. I've been trying all sorts of things for about a week to get IIS to install. Thanks for taking the time to share a "Possible" fix that ended up being rock-solid.

Don't suppose you found a resolution to this as I am currently experiencing the sane thing..

Thanks
