One of two web servers has an ASP error???
I have two IIS 5.1 web servers. I have an ASP file that works properly on
one server, but with the other server, I get an error message from my
application saying:
Error opening URL "http://localhost/adduser.asp"
I have compared all of the web site properties of both web servers and they
appear to be identical. Can someone give me a suggestion as to what I should
look for?
Thanks,

class not registered error even for html
I've seen similar postings, but not quite the same. I have a newly installed Windows XP Pro system with SP1a and all the updates from Windows Update. I have IIS 5.1, which I have completely removed and re-installed to try to solve this problem, but same problem. Any page, including html, results in Server Application Error, and the event log has:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was 'Class not registered
'.
File permissions are open to Everyone, just as an attempt to solve this problem. Tag: Het zal toch niet zijn wie ik denk dat het is? Tag: 337046

Any idea what to check? Is there a way to get IIS to put out more informative errors such as what object or class is causing the error? That would sure help. Thanks in advance. XP/IIS/0x57 error
More info, logged on as administrator, and shut down symantec anti-virus,
same error.
tried to delete c:\inetpub, that worked fine, tried to delete
c:\win\sys32\inetsrv, could not "a program or user has this open... "
Could this somehow be the problem? I did search for the below
iisschema.dll, couldn't find it on xp install or sp 1 cd.
Thanks in advance!
Derrick

I looked thru my IIS6.log file, did not find any reference to '0x57', looked
for 'cannot' and found the below.
Any ideas? Daniel, I get same behavior after install, it says it completes,
no admin mmc plugin, no service visibly installed.
I am not running as administrator, do have .NET visual studio installed, and
do have norton antivirus realtime running, could any of those be the
problem?
Thanks again -

IIS and HTTP API
Hi,
I've found these articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q311852
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q327611
First of all I've got a question. READ_RAW_DATA can be used to modify the
request body not only the headers. Why is it gone? If you don't want to
modify its behavior you should add a new notification type (input and output
as well) only for modifying the entity body.
But my main question is that this article says that IIS 6 operates quite
different in IIS 5 mode.
I section "SSL in IIS 6.0" I've read that in IIS 5 mode IIS 6 hosts SSL and
filters can use SF_NOTIFY_READ_RAW_DATA. This can mean one of the two tings:
1. IIS 6 is not using HTTP API at all.
In this case a lot of HTTP API based things can be broken, including HTTP
API based Windows system services and SQL Server Yukon's web services. If
it's the truth is a very strange thing.
2. IIS 6 is using undocumented HTTP API calls that make it possible to
process the raw data.
In this case you should document these APIs as they could be used by others.
httpapi.dll exports some undocumented functions (without header
declarations) that are used only by IIS. But as HTTP API is an operating
system service and not part of IIS I think you should document all the
functionality of HTTP API.
Sincerely,
Kornél Tag: Het zal toch niet zijn wie ik denk dat het is? Tag: 337040

IIS 6 - edit Script Mappings via command line Qt.
After installing IIS 6 I would like to "prune" the script mappings for
Web Service Extensions that I've enabled. For instance, I would like to
remove the ".cdx" mapping for the ASP.DLL but still keep ".asa" & ".asp".
I've tried the adutil.vbs and iisext.vbs but I'm not able to remove a
specific mapping without using the GUI. Can this be done via the command
line?
TIA,

web server directory listing
In server 2003 is there a way that a web directory that lists files can be
sorted by date instead of by the name of the file? When you go to the web
address to see the files that are listed they are alphabetically listed and
not by date time or size. Is there a way to change it so that it does not
list by name of file? Tag: Het zal toch niet zijn wie ik denk dat het is? Tag: 337030
XP / IIS install problems
I tried uninstalling the .NET Framework, and get a little farther. I run
install optional XP components from the XP cd, select all options for IIS,
no error about the dll, it asks me for location of windows XP service pack 1
cd, I show it where that is located, then it asks me for an XP Service pack
2 file. XP Service pack 2 is still beta, isn't it?
Going on two days now trying to simply install IIS on XP...
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi Carey -
Thanks for the suggestion, tried all the commands you listed, same result
when trying to install IIS.
I'm thinking it has something to do with .NET Framework/Visual Studio
installing *pieces* of IIS?
Thanks again

Problems with Unattended IIS Install in Windows XP
Have been trying to script the installation of IIS within Windows XP.
Within a wrapper, I execute the following command:
sysocmgr /i:c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf /u:c:\temp\xp_iis_unattend.txt /q /r
with xp_iis_unattend.txt containing the following text:
[Components]
iis_common = ON
iis_www = ON
iis_inetmgr = ON
This runs fine if I execute it on a computer that I am logged into with admin rights.
However, I would like to distribute this through software distribution - we use Altiris.
When I run the program as "System", everything seems to work fine, but the IWAM or IIS Process Account is missing.
An error message is produced in the registry:
Setup could not copy one or more files. The specific
error code is 0x4c7. Press OK to continue or Cancel
to stop setup and try again. If you continue the components
may not function properly.
I've verified that "System" has full rights on the computer. I also tried setting up the package to be distributed and run as my user ID and it still failed to install.
Not quite sure where to go with this issue - any help is much appreciated Tag: Het zal toch niet zijn wie ik denk dat het is? Tag: 337026
SSL Certificate and Redirection
All,
Here is the current situation: We have 4 security certificated by VeriSign.
They are site-a.company.com, site-b.company.com, site-c.company.com, and
site-d.company.com.
We would like to have only one security certificate, site-a.company.com.
Using 3 virtual directories that redirects to other internal servers, we
would like to be able to access site-b.company.com via
site-a.company.com/site-b, site-c.company.com via site-a.company.com/site-c,
and site-d.company.com via site-a.company.com/site-d.
The problem appears to be that when the redirection takes place from the
virtual directory the client browser goes from site-a.company.com/site-b to
site-b.company.com and picks up the security certificate to go with that
site. It appears that the certificate is not traveling between servers,
further, even if it would given no other certificates, it appears that the
certificate will still yell at the user because the certificate is
registered to site-a.company.com but the site name (because of the
redirection) is site-b.company.com.

IIS 5.1 default web page ?
Hello,
My Win XP box hosts a very simple website at home for relatives and friends,
and I use redirectors (DynDNS and DNS2GO) in order to make it available
24/7.
My computer is on a WLAN network, so the WLAN router gets the dynamic IP,
and incoming requests on port 21,80 are redirected to my web server machine,
which is in a DMZ. I use a software firewall on that machine (ZoneAlarm).
With this, my ftp server is visible and works fine, and I can use remote
desktop connection from work. Trouble is that requests for my homepage must
be formulated using "index.html" at the end, or my homepage remains
invisible.
Examples:
www.brokenbones.d2g.com/index.html
www.brokenbones.mine.nu/index.html
I recently clean formatted my HDD and reinstalled everything, and since then
the computer behaves like this. Before that, my home page was available with
both redirectors, but without the "index.html" expression.
Any suggestion ?

Backing up and restoring IIS settings

How can I clean (re)install a broken IIS5.1?
Hi,
my IIS (on XP Pro SP1 + security rollupfixes) has stopped serving anything except ASP pages, with no obvious error messages (HHTP or otherwise appearing).
So I removed ISS usign add/remove and then carried out a standard default install of IIS.
However the previous problems remain, namely that it will only serve ASP pages; html, images, pdf etc are not served. The web log shows that the get requests are completing with a 200 or 206 for images, yet nothing gets back to the browser.
Obviously, when I remove IIS, not all settings in the registry are being cleared, so I am hoping that someone may know of a location where I can determine what I should clean out before trying another re-install.
I have also tried finding a post with similar problems but no luck so far.
thanks for any help Tag: Het zal toch niet zijn wie ik denk dat het is? Tag: 336971
New virtual directory using command line
How do I go about creating a new virtual directory (or website) using
command line options? I'm trying to make an installscript that can be used
both for IIS 5 and 6. What I need to do is to set up the new virtual virtual
directory, point it to the directory the user chooses during install and
then set up the proper parameters for scripts and executables as well as
users. (The web app also uses an ISAPI web service extension). I've been
fiddling around with the adsutil.vbs script but I can't get it to do what I
want. Every time i try to run:
"adsutil.vbs create w3svc/1/root/NameOfApp "C:\path" it gives me: Error

II6 and ASP Downloading problem
Hi
We are using Windows 2003 with IIS 6. We could not be able to download the
files through ASP that are more than 20 MB. (We already increased the
AspBufferingLimit in the MetaBase.xml to over 20 MB but no luck.)
I found the KB http://support.microsoft.com/?id=826756
But while waiting for the MS support to send that file to me, is there are
any worarounds I can try?

Unable to download Excel Files after Running IIS Lockdown
We have a Windows 2000 Standard Server and implemented IIS lockdown,
including URLscan.
Since doing so it is not possible to download Excel documents from the
website.
When attempting to download the Excel file, the following error message is
received:
"Internet Explorer cannot download <filename>.xls from <website name"
"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested
site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."
The file is definitely on the server and we can open it on the server with
Excel.
If I rename the file to a different extension e.g. MyExcelfile.abc then it
will download OK.
This seems to indicate that URLScan is getting in the way, however, it does
not show a failed attempt to access the Excel document in the URLScan log
files.
We have added .xls to the allowed extensions in URLScan, but this hasn't
solved the problem.
Could anyone offer any advice on how to solve this issue, please?
TIA for your time and help.

w3wp.exe has 100% load when publishing with FrontPage
We have one server, where every publish using FrontPage results in a 100%
load of the w3wp.exe process. We need to kill the process.
If we publish once using an Administration account, than everything works
fine, even another user can publish. The next day, w3wp.exe hangs again when
publishing.
The server is a clean install of Windows Server 2003, so we did not migrate
from FP 2000.
We urgently need some help, any suggestions are welcome.

IIS downtime!

Can I achieve a secure logon to a virtual folder on the second machine?

Can Host Headers with No Default Domain Name?
I've recently taken up a dedicated server package for hosting a number of

The dedicated server has no domain dame associated with it, just an IP
address.
I can't get Host Headers working, IIS seems to expect a Host Header in a
the format domainname.com (with or without the www. prefix
Is there any way around this or do I need to get a default domain name set

batch update the ip address of all webs in IIS 5
Hello,
we are moving an existing and configured webserver IIS5 to our
offices, so we have to change the ip address of the network card.
Does any one know if it is possible to change the ip addresses of all
the webs by scripting? Or by editing a file/registry?
I've searched almost anything but don't find where this is stored.
I guess it must be in the MetaBase?
Is it possible to change this with scripting? Or is the only manner to
do this manually?
Anyone already ran into such a situation?

iis redirect question, redirect folder requests
Hey,
I want to set up a redirect for requests to a folder to a specific page, but let all requests for content within that folder go directly to the content
so http://www.server.com/D/
goes to http://www.server.com/howdy.asp
and all requests to http://www.server.com/D/hi.xsd
goes to http://www.server.com/D/hi.xsd
in iis 6 does that require an isapi redirect or can it be done simpler? Tag: Het zal toch niet zijn wie ik denk dat het is? Tag: 336948

IIS 6 -Publishing from FP -site gets dropped in default site direc
Hi
When I publish from FP to win2003 server running iis 6.0
the site gets published to the wrong directory on the server
it should get published to d:\sites\site1\www
and istead it gets published to the default website directory
I think the problem has to do with host headers ??
I'm using some static addresses and some host headers
this site has a static address
probably not configuring them correctly or something...
I have about 10 small sites on this server and most of them work fine
it could also have to do with the front page extensions but I'm not sure
I have deleted and readded the site with no luck
and tried to dupicate the settings under properties from similar sites on this server
any suggeations would be greatly appreciated

Setting bandwidth throttling on NT4 - how?
I'm running IIS 4 and an SMTP server (post.office) on separate
machines (each running NT-4 server).
On the local LAN, accessing the WWW site (and downloading large files
from the site) is relatively fast, and so is POP-3 to the SMTP server.
However, when accessing the WWW site or pulling e-mail off the server
via the internet connection (ISDN) and while monitoring the bandwidth
usage on the ISDN router, it's clear that some sort of throttling is
happening (ie continuous utilization of 100% bandwidth is not
happening for both large WWW file downloads nor pop-3 email access
with large attached files).
In the IIS control panel, there is a bandwidth setting where I can set
the max bytes/second that IIS will serve up. It says that setting
will supercede some global maching bandwidth or throttling setting.
But it doesn't say _where_ that global setting is located.
So, is there such a global bandwidth setting for NT-4 server, and if
so where is it?

Setting up FTP
I using Server 2003 with IIS 6. I am trying to set up two FTP accounts. Under FTP Sites in IIS 6 I have run the FTP setup wizard and created two sites. FTP1 and FTP2. I then ftp into mysite.com with a username of ftp1, I am able to see only my directory and everything works fine. I then ftp into mysite.com with a username of ftp2 and corresponding password. I log in but I don't see the directory for ftp2, I only see the directory for ftp1. How can I change it so the corresponding directory for each? I have tried both the isolation method and non isolation method. Due to my directory structure I would prefer to use the non isolation method.

upgrading web server to windows 2003 and IIS 6.0
I made a mistake when upgrading our windows 2000 web
server to windows 2003. I was prompted that the www
publishing service would be disabled during the upgrade
and went ahead and upgraded the server any way. I have
since found out the disabling was probably due to not
having the IIS 5.0 lock down tool installed. Now that the
server is windows 2003, I don't appear to be able to

Delay in starting IIS
Hello
I have a PIII 600 MHz system with 256 MB RAM
OS: Windows XP Prof Edition
After my system boot up,
when i try to view a page for the first time from localhost, it takes about
2 to 3 minutes to process the page!
after that, everything works fine!
I have IIS 5.1 installed. what could be the problem? I checked the services
immediately after bootup, the IISAdmin service, World Wide Publishing are
set to "automatic" and gets started during startup itself!
then, why there is delay when i try to open a location in localhost for the
first time???
any help would be appreciated!

Webgarden\Woker Process\IIS 6.0\Multi-proc server
Correct me if I have this wrong. With webgarden enabled, the IIS worker
process will run on one particular cpu and can have multiple worker
processes to run on multiple CPUs spreading the load evenly among the CPUs.
However, webgarden is disabled by default from the machine.config file, Does
this mean that by leaving webgarden disabled the worker process or processes
not able to take advantage of the multi-processor server and limit it to run
only on a single proc leaving the other proc idled?

Perl & CGI on IIS
I'm having trouble running a Perl script on IIS 6.0 (Also on earlier versions). The script runs fine until I get to a page that has a form with a lot of input fields. Then it locks up for several minutes and displays "CGI Timeout. The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process." If I shorten the form (remove some input fields) it works fine. I was previously running on IIS 5.0 on a Windows 2000 server and it worked until a couple of days ago. The application works fine on Windows XP Professional (running IIS 5.1 I believe). I'm curious as to why it stopped working recently and why it seems to work on the XP Professional machine.
