Newbie's Q: How to test?
I'm a newbie and just started on the road of web development.I've been
struggling with getting IIS 5.0 to recognise the site on my W2K machine. I
have an ISP and aim to eventually publish on third party Web Host.
I'd just like to confirm:
When I am testing my site through IIS, and the site is located on my
computer do I HAVE to be logged into the net to do my testing? I am doing an
ipconfig, getting my IP address, and then typing
http://<myIPaddress>.default.asp into my browser.
Is this the way its done? Is there a way to test when I'm not connected to
my ISP?

WIn2k SP4 breaks OWA change password functionality?
MS have changed the way IIS5.0 change password
functionality with Win2k SP4 as described in;
IIS: Change Password Functionality Replaced with Active
Server Pages
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;331834
I have just been building a new OWA 5.5 server, running on
Win2k SP4 and have noticed that change password
functionality requires some tweaking to get working
properly.
Specifically;
1) "Account" name gets truncated by 1char on the left
eg. "testuser" becomes "estuser"
2) Pressing Cancel button gives;
"Response object error 'ASP 0158 : 80004005'
Missing URL
/iisadmpwd/achg.htr, line 20
A URL is required."
After making a successful password change, a link called "
Back to " is displayed, with URL
of "https://servername/iisadmpwd/" which not surprisingly
does not work. It should really be some sort of close
window jscript?
By making manual changes to the .htr files in IISADMPWD
folder you can make it all work gracefully but it can take
some time to get right.

Cannot remove ism.dll script maps...
This is the error I am getting.
I was initially trying to reinstall my Mcafee Antivirus
software after the server was rebuilt, and got the
message that I needed to perform Windows Update before it
would work. We downloaded the Windows update but when
trying to install it, get the error messages:
"Cannot remove ism.dll script maps"
"sp4115 unable to connect to the metabase"
"unable to create cab installer object. Agent service may
not be running properly"
I'm not exactly an IIS guru so was hoping someone could
help me. Is it just a matter of removing the ism.dll
scripts? If so, how do I go about this.

subtle url/address question
perhaps this is better asked in an internet protocol group or dns group

http://www.job1data.com/ or http://job1data.com/ (no www)
but when i want to access a specific page such as

the url????
my host header definition is currently www.job1data.com , i have tried just
changing the host header def to job1data.com/ (no www) but no change

Multiple websites, multiple ips, one NIC, websites are getting mixed up
Hello.
I'm running IIS 5.0 on Win 2k server. Additionally, I have ColdFusion
MX 6.0 running as a service as well.
My problem is that I have five different websites set up on this
machine, two of which are high-volume sites. When I try to access
other WWW websites set up in IIS I frequently get a site other than
intended. For instance, I will try accessing Coldfusion Administrator
via http://localhost:xxxxx, and I will get a website configured for
one of the other IP addresses.
I have shut off Socket Pooling. Additionally I have set all the
websites' Application Protection to High (Isolated) as I originally
thought this was a problem with the wrong memory being addressed
somehow.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Local drive mapped to Intranet Server Hyperlinks are wrong.
I have a department that has taken over a new Intranet
running on an IIS server. I have provided them with a
mapped drive directly to the WWWROOT folder for easy
access to files and folders. They are editing it with
frontpage. When they open an existing document in word
that resides on the intranet, and try and create a
hyperlink to another document on the intranet instead of
putting in a http path it does a local path. No matter how
much we try and edit the hyperlink when we PDF it it makes
it go to a local drive. Well since none of the other users
have this local drive mapped they do not have access to it.

connection reset errors
I'm looking for a suggestion on how to best monitor and log a given IIS
session, ideally in verbose mode. We have an app that allows users to
install application via URL's. Problem is when the application is hosted on
IIS, our debug log on the client shows "connection to the server was reset"
when accessing this large file via dial-up. I'm pinning this on IIS because
the same installation over dial-up works when the download is hosted on

Bypassing anonymous access intentionally
I would like to enable anonymous access to most content, including the main
root home page, of a particular portal site that is hosting a SharePoint
Portal Server v2 portal. In IIS, I enabled anonymous access in directory
security for the portal site. But now, becuase people who have user
accounts on the portal aren't asked for authentication, of course the their
targeted links no longer show up on the home page and the link to their
personal home site is not on the home page as well. A simple solution to
this would be to create a link on the home page to a non-anonymous page for
login purposes. However, many things in Sharepoint have public and private
views (in other words, all authenticated users may see something entirely
different at a particular URL than does a person who has a personal view).
When anonymous access is enabled, the private view is no longer available or
easily accessible so when you send a URL to someone, if it is your intention
to show them the private authenticated view, there seems to be no easy way
to accomplish this.
Do I need to create a separate site in IIS, one for anonymous and one for
authenticated access or is their a simpler (or more clever) fix using IIS6
or something else? Tag: Try that critical pack Tag: 312801

.aspx files don't work
I have been having some trouble with my web server running
under Windows 2000 Server, so I removed IIS and
reinstalled it. Now, I noticed that my .aspx pages don't
work correctly. The server is returing the .aspx files as
text to the client instead of parsing them, although .asp
files work fine. I did notice when loking through the
variosu web properties, that under "Documents->Default
document", where there is usually a "default.aspx" item to
choose, there is not. It's my initial assumption that
something having to do with the .NET extensions has gotten
removed from IIS, presumable because I removed and re-
installed it and Windows 2000 did not originally have
support for .NET server content? Hmm.... So, I went to
Windows update and installed the .NET framework, but still
now luck. Any suggestiosn? default.aspx still does nto
show up automatically ni my choices for default documents,
so I'm assuming the server still doesn't understand
what .aspx files aer or what to do with them. Thanks!

Can I have multiple domains on one machine?
I ahve two questions that are somewhat unrelated... One
of general curiosity and the other of immediate practical
use, but I'll go ahead and post them both here.
#1 - I am hosting several small websites on my server
(2000 Advanced Server). When deploying the webs, many
peopl ehave said that I should simply create new virtual
directories beneath the root web for each site. The
problem with this approach is that I need the sites to be
unique by their web addresses, so I need different webs in
order for them to distinguish the requests from each other
based on the host headers (so that erquests for "ABC.COM"
go to a different web than requests to "XYZ.COM".) I do
not have any trouble setting this up. However, some of
the applications I'd like to use (such as SMTP, POP3,
etc.) want for users to authenticate to do various
things. Again, I can work around these issues, but what
I'd really like to do is to simply give Joe with XYZ.COM a
Windows account that he can authenticate with for things
like sending and retreiving his email. Otherwise, without
that then I have to explain to Joe that even though
he's "XYZ.COM" he has to enter his username
as "joe@jim.local" in order to authenticate beacuse my
system is not "really" XYZ.COM... Phew... anyway...
Hopefully ou can see what I mean here. It seems like
active directory could support more tha none domain, and
the server could act as the PDC for more than one.. Or is
this not corret? Could anyone give me a suggestion as to
how to make this work better? Surely there must be a good
way to do this and look professional without having to go
out and physically buy a separate box for each and every
site we deploy! LOL
#2 - This is more of general curiosity, but when I was a
user of a workstation on NT 4.0, I remember that the
system logon screen would allow you to choose from a list
of several different NT domains to authenticate on. I hear
that now in Windows 2000, it is not possible to register
on more than one domain, plus your local system. Is this
correct? If not, then how do I tell my local computer
that it belongs to more than one domain, so the domains
come up in the dropdown at sign on?
Thanks for any help! ;)

CGI once but not twice: W2kPro vs. W2kServer?
My development machine is running IIS5.0 on Windows 2000 Professional. I am employing a CGI executable (mapserver.exe, written in C) in a website. This programme creates a map as a PNG image from database input and returns a url for the image. A few months ago, I finished developing the website to my satisfaction and moved it to a production server that runs IIS5.0 on Windows 2000 Server.
A few weeks ago I had a hard-drive crash that necessitated getting a new machine for development. I thought I had it set exactly as it had been on the old machine, but I am getting a weird error. When the website is called for the first time, the CGI does exactly what it is supposed to do (create a map). But the next time is is called (for example, by zooming in on the map) it returns "CGI Error The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:". If I hit "refresh", it returns to the start, i.e. the first map it drew; but every so often, about once in every four times, hitting refresh will take me to the new map, the one most recently requested. In short, the CGI call works first time every time, but only some of the calls within the same session are working. The code invoking the CGI call is identical to (copy-and-paste) the code on the production machine, which works perfectly every time.
Of course, I originally thought it was a problem with the CGI setup, but I have exhaustively compared it to the working version on the production machine and I don't think this is the problem. I have set permissions for IUSR and IWAM identical to the production machine.
Is there anything else I can try to get the CGI to work on my development machine?
One other thing, but I don't believe this is a factor: the development machine has .NET, the production machine has not. Thanks for any help you can render. Tag: Try that critical pack Tag: 312732
NLB & SSL Sites
I have 2 servers setup to Network Load Balance 4 SSL sites. NLB is
currently configured for Single affinity so we don't have problems with
users bouncing from one server to another. Here is my question:
We purchased a wildcard SSL certificate that serves all of our web sites
(e.g., *.mysite.com). In a typical installation each SSL site would have
it's own IP address that it is bound to. Now since we have a NLB setup we
can't do this since 2 servers with identical web sites sharing the same IPs
would cause a conflict on the network. I guess my question is - do I need
to add all 4 IP addresses as IPs to the actual Cluster? Then once this
information is propogated down to the servers can I then associate these IPs
to each SSL site?
Thinking in terms of IP addresses / Cluster IP addresses and SSL sites has
got my brain a bit confused.

Setting up a 301 redirect for individual pages on IIS
Hi knowledgable people,
I've inherited a site running on Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 and am
changing a few pages around.
What I want to do is redirect users and search engines from a page
like
http://www.thenameofmysite.com/old/directory/features.html
to
http://www.thenameofmysite.com/features/index.html
I've seen it recommended that I use a 301 permanent redirect. I've
also seen the following ASP code to carry out the redirect.
<%
Response.Status = "301 Moved Permanently"
Response.addheader "Location", "http://www.yourdomain.com/newpageurl/"
Response.End
%>
Now I've never used ASP before coming from a javascript/perl
background. So my initial reaction was to create a page called
text.html and put the script into it. Unsprisingly it didnt work.
There are no .asp pages on the site and there is a custom 404 page set
up I don't want to touch.
Could someone point me in the right direction. I've just goine through
the documentation if IIS and can't appear to find the answer.
