    - Email program won't send in Windows 2003 - Queue_Manager Hello, I have a client that just switched to Windows 2003 server. Their website has always run fine under Windows 2000, using an email program queue_manager.exe to send order and support emails (sending a receipt to the sender). This seems to work under Windows 2003, but won't send the email. I suspect it's a security configuration issue, but can't seem to pin point it (since I am a novice with 2003 server). The server also has Exchange Server installed. Here is the script I'm using; Set U = server.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") U.Run "d:\inetpub\wwwroot\admin\queue_manager.exe" Set U = nothing Any Ideas?     - Host Header confusion Host Header confusion. I have 2 sites I want to share a single IP. I understand how to use host headers to do this. But what I do not get is how to make sure they server different content. There is no setting to map a host header to a single document of virtual directory. So if the 2 domains are abc.com and xyz.com how do I get generic requests to these to serve up different directories (or even append a query string to the url? Thanks!     - IIS 6 Compression speed increases.. hello all.. i'm going to be upfront and say that i'm a developer, not a server admin but am stuck wearing the hat for part of a project.. we've enabled compression on our webserver and made the appropriate changes in our code to handle the compressioin.. i know its all setup properly and working as i've been monitoring the traffic to and from the server.. i'm not happy with the speed increase that we got when we moved from our test lab to the prod. server. i'm thinking that the prod. server isn't sufficient for the job.. our test server is a P4 3GHz (HT) with 2 GB ram, while our prod server is P4 2Ghz with 1 GB of ram. the speed difference between the two is significant. would the difference in specs between the two servers be enough to justify the speed increase? we will have a Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz (HT) with 4GB of ram available to host the app. i guess i'm looking for some opinions on what to do.. what counters should i be monitoring etc. for what its worth the client tier of the app is windows forms, business tier are webservices (most of which returning datasets).. thanks guys Tag: server requirements Tag: 375029

    - Slowresponse by machine name, fast w/Localhost? I'm developing some basic asp.net stuff locally. The code works fine, no errors. If I hit it this way: http://localhost/mypage.aspx it runs great. If I hit it this way: http://machinename.domain.com/mypage.aspx it takes about 30 seconds before it returns the page on the first session hit. After that, it runs great during that session. This wouldn't be a problem except that the development of this work is being monitored by my boss. He's a bit impatient about the poor performance when he tries to hit my work from his machine using the URL above. Where should I start looking to resolve this issue? Is this a DNS/Network problem?     - IIS Crash & IIS State Log analysis Hi there ! I've posted before and got a good anwsers but sadly I say I have not found solution to my problem yet. Now I have output from Windbg and I'm asking wheather someone can read throug it and tell what is going on!     - IIS Won't open Hello everyone, I am running windows media center 05 and I am trying to get IIS working. I installed it properly.When I open the Administratove tools => Internet Information Services everything opens up fine. When I try to expand the local computer, nothing expands. I can right click and the regular menu opens up but ntohing else happens. I was using IIS win xp pro for the last 2 years until the computer died which is why I bought this new one.     - Understanding Domain Forwarding I am trying to understand how the processing of forwarded domains works. Here is the environment: I have 2 domain names registered, "main.com" and "second.com" as examples. "main.com" is hosted on a shared hosting site and the DNS pointers for "main.com" point to that site. "main.com" has a subdirectory named "second" where the pages for the alternate web site are stored - http://main.com/second - which has its own default.aspx file. http://main.com/second is defined as an application root. "second.com" is forwarded to "http://main.com". In the default.aspx file on main.com I have code that checks the HTTP_REFERER server variable and if the URL entered was "http://second.com" it does a Response.Redirect to http://main.com/second. All of that works but I am having a problem running the "second.com" application. In that application I have a login form which, after validating the login, sets a session variable to the value of the logged in user's ID and then does a Response.Redirect to another page in the application. When I get to that next page, the sesion variable is blank? I verified that just before the Response.Redirect the session variable is set correctly. If, instead of starting the application using http:/second.com (the forwarded domain) I use http://main.com/second, everything works? When i try access http://ServerName/login it works but when i try http://ServerName/report/Daily.aspx i get a "under construction" page.     - Integrated IIS Authentication Hey everyone, I'm currently setting up webservers for use within our organisation. We use Integrated Authentication to authenticate users who access our intranet (etc). Most users use our workstations and login to our domain and there are no problems (authentication is seemless). Some users have (corporate) laptops which we have them logging into locally (so they can login when they are away/at home/etc). When these users access the webserver, the credentials for the local account (which - mind you, are the same as their domain account) are passed through to the webserver. The authentication fails because the webserver is not a domain controller - and therefore wont authenticate the user back to the domain. Users are prompted for a password which they need to enter in the {Domain}\{Username} format. Our file-servers double as domain controllers so this is no problem when they try to access shares (etc), but i would prefer to have our webservers as member servers.     - Event 4786 COM+ error, please help Hi everyone, I hadn't touched an asp/aspx web application running on my localhost for several weeks, and when I try to hit either an asp or aspx page I get a 500 server error. When I hit the aspx page I get a pop up box in my IE browsers which says that "COM Surrogate has encountered a problem and needs to close." In the event viewer event 4786 is logged with event 1000. I also get event 1001, "Fault Bucket 247724115" event 4786 is "The system has called a custom component and that component has failed and generated an exception." I have no idea why that would apply in my situation, seeing as how there have been no code changes in the last month at least. I'd appreciate an input. Thanks!     - iissync reports success but nothing is synced We've got a strange problem, maybe you can help us. Two win2k-servers with IIS 5.0, server1 and server2. Both are domain controllers for the the same domain (webnet.latitud.net). Server1 is the primary webserver and from that server I run the command: <<C:\WINNT\system32\inetsrv\iissync server2>> Sometimes I've got an error message: The network name is no longer available" but most of the times the answer is: "Source : 259, scanned, Targets : (259,0), Replication successful for target server2 Replication was successful" Our problem is that nothing is updated at server2. I make a check at internet service manager to look for the changes I know are made to server1 but unfortunately they are not synced, even if iissync reports success. Any idea? Where to start? I've also tried to do: <<iissync server2.webnet.latitud.net>> i.e. with the complete domain name, that attempt gives the error: "The RPC server is unavailable" Thanks in advance. When using localhost, Internet Explorer takes +- 5 minutes to show me an error message, and during that time the CPU is the whole time at exactly 100%...     - inetinfo.exe memory leak I have Windows Server 2000 with all the service paks installed. I noticed my memory keeps increasing on my inetinfo.exe service. The i/o reads has grown to 13,000,000 in just three days. I only have 3 web sites running with very little traffic. Maybe 10 hits per day. The leak has crashed my Server once and I had to reinstall Windows Server because I lost my desktop and tried everything else to recover it. If I stop IIS and restart, the counter starts again and continues to increase. I ran file monitor from system internal and a process called inetinfo.exe has reads every 2 seconds. The log filled up a whole page in just 30 seconds. The path of the process is C:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\ntinst1.mdb with result SUCCESS on each line of the log file. I looked at the .mdb in this folder and the database has tables with system classes and objects in it. The size is only 512k or so it is not increasing in size. I am also running .net framework 1.1 with the hotfix 1.1. The web pages are written in C#.net. What maybe causing this memory leak. What is the .mdb datase for. We have one website for "client A" set-up with an SSL cert. as follows: Host Header: www.clienta.com port: 80 on 203.123.123.123 SSL port: 443 on 203.123.123.123 When we navigate to http://www.clienta.com all works fine When we navigate to https://www.clienta.com all works fine and is secure We have a second client "client B" who do not have an SSL certificate. so they are set up as follows: Host header: www.clientb.com port: 80 on 203.123.123.123 When we navigate to http://www.clientb.com all works fine When we navigate (accidentally) to https://www.clientb.com, we get a secure connection to Client A's website, with client B's domain name! What's going on here? You can't set header's on SSL connections, we have almost 50 clients on this server and this happens for every one of them who don't have their own ssl certificate. I've tried setting the ssl port to 443 on each client site, as well as adding a new header record attached to port 443, but they still (all) redirect to this Client A website, unless they have their own ssl certificate installed., In other words, 5 clients work, the rest redirect to "client A"'s site. :( Any help would be greatly appreciated. How does this work; a thread is spawned to service each session? To handle just one request? Allocated out of a pool to handle a request? The thread lives for the duration of the session or request? A maximum number of threads? What happens when a thread limit is reached? These seem like basic questions our developers MUST understand, but apparently do not.     - SSL Problems I've recently fnished building a website and I'm having a strange problem with SSL. To add a little more detail. I created a directory called "secure" under my website's root directory. In this directory I created a page called "index.asp" that serves up a form to the user. The form has a number of fields the user is supposed to fill in. When the user tries to submit the form, there is a lot of client side validation that occurs. Nothing new or cutting edge here. If I open a browser and navigate to http://www.mysite.com/sercure/index.asp everythign is fine. The page loads, the form behaves, and the client side java script performs correctly. I recently bought a SSL certificate and installed it on the web site without any problems or errors. After installing the certificate I went into the properties for this directory and select Directory Security->Secure Communications Edit and checked "Require Secure Channel". What I wanted to do was specify anything in this subdirectory should go through SSL. Now when I open a browser and navigate to https://www.mysite.com/secure.index.asp the page loads fine but non of the client side java script works. If I uncheck "Require Secure Channel" and use http, the client side javascript works. If check "Require Secure Channel" and use https the client side java script doesn't work. Is there a better way to do this? Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Someone told that something has gotten confused becuase the ports have changed. I was told that all that I need to do un-unstall and re-install the website. Does this make sense to anyone? How do I un-install and re-install? What does that do to the SSL certificate?     - Problem with Windows 2000 Terminal Services connecting to WebDav on II6 I have setup WebDav for a dozen users to access a file over the internet from their individual offices. One of the users has a problem. When they go to Internet Explorer > File > Open, the box that allows you to "open as a web folder" is grayed out so they can't select it. He is using Windows 2000 Terminal Services at his office. I am not too familiar with Terminal Services beyond Remote Desktop connections to XP boxes and for Windows 2000 SP4 Server for Administrative mode. In both of those cases, I have the ability to check 'Open as a Web Folder". Perhaps the users IT staff disabled this from a GPO? IIS 6 webdav is secure, right? I know that IIS 5 had security holes in it's implementation. Does anyone have a suggestion for getting this client connected to our webDav site?     - Performance issue in IIS - can't figure out why I have an issue that my web pages take about 10 seconds to load. I have two web servers with a backend SQL server. I do not run both webservers servers at the same time. I know that it is a web server issue because when I use the backup server with no load the pages fly. It is only when there is load on the server that the pages take 10 seconds to load. It does not matter which server, it is the one with the load that takes time. It is a busy site. Now, I checked performance counters and could not figure out where the bottleneck is. Server has 2 GB of memory. CPU is at 10%. Disk queue length is at 0.02. I suspect Memory may be an issue, but I could not find anything seriously wrong with the counters: page faults/sec are at 800 pages/sec is 5. pages reads/sec is 2.3. pages input/sec is 8. Those numbers are a bit high. Anyone have input on that? Any other coutners I should be monitoring? Also, it seems that IIS is only using 1 GB of memory. How can I set it to use more memory? I tried using and setting the MemCacheSize registry setting to 1300 to get IIS to use more memory for it's file system cache and it did not work. I need to get some server hardware requirements for our webserver which
is Win2K/IIS 5.0. Is there a way to compute some kind of rough estimates
as to what kind of processor, memory etc. would be required using web
traffic data. We have on average about 600 users (peak about 1000),
averaging 20 hits/sec peak (70 hits/sec). Most of the pages served are
static html pages or images. Pages that are not static are routed to the
appservers using a plugin installed on IIS.
