Hi -

Hoping one of you kind MS technicians who seem to be perusing this area see
this one, too. THANKS

Here is the FTP msg I'm getting from FTP Voyager here at home when I upload
files to my 2003 server down the road:

FTP upload to 2003 server: "Unable to set file date and time. Server may not
support command."

Here are some event log messages on the server that may or may not be
applicable:

The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service suspended operation
The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service has been idle for 15 minutes,
it will be shut down

Perflib - 1016 - The data buffer created for the "TermService" service in
the
"C:\Windows\System32\perfts.dll" library is not aligned on an 8-byte
boundary. This may cause problems for
applications that are trying to read the performance data buffer...

THANKS!

I had a quick look at the web site for FTP Voyager (because I've never
seen it before) and there's a screenshot of the product showing an
extended log with details of the FTP connection in progress. Have a
look for yourself :

FTP Voyager is using a command for a purpose that it wasn't designed for.

The MDTM command takes one parameter - a file name. It uses that file name
to display the last time that file was modified. FTP Voyager is supplying
it with two parameters, one a time, the other a file name, and it is
expecting that the FTP server it's connected to agrees with its non-standard
use.

My advice - simply ignore the warning. There are other commands under
discussion in the IETF FTPEXT Working Group that would serve the purpose
that FTP Voyager is trying to put MDTM to, but the consensus is that it is
inappropriate to add this as an ability for the existing MDTM command.

One obvious reason is this - what if you had a file "19990405133000 - Lunch
time photo.jpg"? What would "MDTM 19990405133000 - Lunch time photo.jpg"
mean? Would it mean "show me the time that the file '19990405133000 - Lunch
time photo.jpg' was last modified", or would it mean "find the file '- Lunch
time photo.jpg' and set its last modification time to 1999/04/05, 13:30:00"?

Should that example command display a time for the existing file, or an
error for the file that doesn't exist? Ambiguous commands are painful to
debug, which is one reason why the IETF FTPEXT WG has not approved this use
of MDTM.

Alun.
