    - How do you stop dllhost.exe I have a multi-tiered web application written in VB. I'm attempting to redeploy one of my dlls but dllhost is hanging on to it. I've stopped iisadmin, w3svc, stmp, ftp, msdtc...but dllhost continues to keep running. Is there a graceful way of stopping it? I'm working on procedures so this can get moved into a production environment and dont really want my operators just killing processes. Any thoughts? Thanks.     - Accessing a remote SMB share using ASP under IIS Hi, I have recently inherited a very large, very old ASP application. The app is on a cluster of web servers, that also talk to a database server running SQL Server 2005. Among other things, the app has a page that accesses a remote file share (Samba, actually) down a 1mb private circuit. The page also appears to load in a perl script that blocks execution while it waits for the machine with the share to read in the file that's been written, and write a 'response' file - which the script then reads in. During periods of intense load, the entire application seems to perform poorly, with page requests timing out or taking a long time to return data. This behaviour is exhibited by all ASP pages, not just ones that perform the file exchange or access the database. Our monitoring shows that the web servers do occasionally peak at 100% CPU usage, but it is not constant. My question is whether the performance of all ASP pages in a given application could be affected by having an ASP page that is working with SMB shares, or taking a long time to execute? If so, what is the bottleneck? Pooled worker threads? Outgoing SMB ports? I was also wondering what people might recommend for monitoring the health of this system to attempt to identify the cause of the problem. I realise I have been pretty vague, so many thanks in advance for any help people may offer, as well as suggetions about how I can provide more information about the issue.     - w3svc error event 1011 application pool error. Hi, I have a windows 2k3 server withi IIS6.0. I have an asp.net application running on .Net 2.0 . Lately i have had sessions getting lost randomly. A user would store it in one page and then it would be gone if he goes to the next page at times. After dicsounting other reasons, i thought of taking a look at the IIS and the possiblity that the worker process was getting reset. I have tons of the following error in Systems Events Log. Source: W3SVC EventID: 1011 A process serving application pool 'xxx' suffered a fatal communication error with the World Wide Web Publishing Service. The process id was '4236'. The data field contains the error number. Data 0000: 6d 00 07 80 After researching a bit on the web i installed Debug Diagnostic. I have got dumps (in .dmp format) as well as log files. I looked at the log files as well as opend the dumps in Debug Diagnostics. But i'm not sure how to understand what it means. Could anyone point me to a resource as to how to analyze log files / dump files to locate what is causing the problem ? Or is anyone willing to take a look at it ?     - IIS diag analysis help Hi, We have a ASP.NET application that runs on a (english) Windows 2003 server SP1, IIS6. IIS (w3wp.exe) crashes at a certain point, that is reproductable. The crashing "point" in the application is an SQL statement resulting an SQL error. (The application runs fine if there is no SQL error. The crash only happens if the SQL statement returns an error). Of course, we tested the application, but we don't seem to find any coding bugs in there. Correct exception handling, etc. The application runs on numerous other IIS servers as well, without any problems. But this particular server crashes. I have run a IIS diag and created an analyzis summary. The summary indicates that there is a System.Resources.MissingManifestResourceException that causing the crash. Can you please help me to understand the problem. Is it the running application, is it ASP.NET, IIS or is it something else that misses a manifest? (The application's default culture is Hungarian.)     - IIS-ASP.NET problem I am hosting my own Asp.net website and its working fine and is on the internet. However my company website gives me an error saying that I cannot run two versions of asp.net it is not on the internet.Eventviewer tells me that I cannot run two versions of Asp.net, how ever I have no choice because Asp.net 1.4 is grayed out on some functions like WSUS Should I go and change the Asp.net back to version 1.4 since I cannot change WSUS version to 2.0?     - IIS 7 installation problem My first post. I hope this works. I am attempting to install IIS 7 onto to a new computer preloaded with Vista Home Premium Edition. For this machine, the internet, shares on the LAN, and all office software appears in order. I have carefully followed the instructions four times in: "How to install SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services on a Windows Vista-based computer", http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934164. I need the IIS for Access 2007 ASP.Net, etc., and also as I am about to install Expression Web. I am always logged on as administrator. On the first attempt IIS 7 loaded, however the express edition SQL server with advanced services indicated that IIS services were not available even though http://localhost was functional in Internet Explorer. I did a restore but now, on each IIS installation attempt, I get an error message indicating that not all components are installed. The INETPUB folder and subfolders are regenerated but the Windows Features control indicate after a reboot that none of the Web features have been installed. I currently run IIS on an XP machine with FrontPage extensions with no difficulty. Any and all suggestions will be most appreciated. I am a volunteer that manages data and websites for a philanthropic group that supports a Youth in Difficulty foundation, and a non-profit trans-Canada art society.     - How can I force IIS to redirect requests coming to http://domain.org to http://domain.org/document.asp? I am running IIS6 on my own gear. I have websites that are distinguished by host header mapping. I have assigned an .asp page as the default document for a particular site of interest. What I would like is sort of weird, but please just bear with me. What I need is for any request that goes to http://domain.org to be redirected to an actual document: http://domain.org/defaultdocument.asp. I need this done for reasons that are pretty complicated and that I don't want to get into right now. Is there a way that I could do this either in IIS or programmatically in VBScript/ASP on the default doc page? I tried interrogating the URL item in the ServerVariables collection, but it does not seem to report anything differently if the user has requested "http://domain.org/defaultdocument.asp" vs. http://domain.org/.     - Page Not Displayed Intermittent We are running a Win 2k server with IIS 5. All of a sudden a few days ago, users accessing the web server via some ISPs get Page Cannot Be Displayed.     - Securing a system In some places, a security scan is the rule and any deviation must be justified. I'm dealing with the same issue right now where I need to get rid of the IISADPWD directory. This is a couple of months after the fact, but, one option given is to ensure that the virtual directory is not present on any sites then lock down the folder. If you're using the same security scanner that I have, your report will list this as a workaround with justification that you can provide the accreditation team.     - Metabase problems restoring IIS to another server Backed up the drives and system state of an IIS/Sharepoint server and restored to another server. The IIS services fail to start and I tracked this down to the encryption/machine keys in the metabase. I now know of a "portable" vs "non-portable" backup of the metabase but this doesn't really help me. You can back up the metabase ina portable format all you want in IIS on the original source server but since the IIS services on the target box will not start, you can't restore that portable metabase using the GUI or IISBACK.VBS.     - File downloading not working from IIS We have an IIS server with a virtual directory set up for read + directory browsing. Users use this to download files off it easily. Downloads appear to be not working though - if I click on a file, I get the usual open/save box in my internet browser, but if I choose "Save", it doesn't start downloading. After about 30 secs, it then "completes" but the file is only a few bytes and unusable.     - W3WP 32 bit image running inside 64 bit SVCHOST Hi all, I've a 64 bit Windows Server 2003 R2 installation, and I notice that the worked process is showing as 32 bit in process explorer and is running inside a 64 bit svchost process. What's going on here? Does this mean it's a 32 bit version of IIS, or is running in compatibility mode? If so, how can I disable it? I presumed that with 64 bit Windows 2003, I'd get 64 bit IIS...     - FrontPage 2002 x64 Extension issues - 404 not found on Website I have migrated to a new Windows 2003 x64 Standard edition server that I'm running a few corporate websites from. One department is using FrontPage 2003 to administrate their website. They need to be able to have forms submitted to them, so they are using FrontPage for that feature. The old server was running Windows 2000 Advanced with Frontpage 2000 extensions installed. I stopped IIS on both servers and moved the directory contents by drag and drop. (My first mistake?) All the files seem to have made it accross without error. Now I needed to install Extensions so that the forms worked on their site. I have learned that I can't install FrontPage Extensions 2003 on x64 bit server, and that I have to install FPSE 2002 x64 for this. ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832095/en-us ) So now, I've installed the extensions and ran into an issue with logon when I visited the Microsoft SharePoint Administrator website (http 401.1 error). That's now resolved, I was using Firefox, and it turned out that IE was needed. I can logon to "Microsoft SharePoint Administrator" / "FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 Server Administration" and I see a list of "Virtual Servers" like below: Name URL Version MyWeb http://webserver 5.0.2.6738 Administration TrainingWeb Extend I *can* click on the "Administration" link in the one web site. Although there isn't much that I need to do at this link. From what I understand, I need to click on the "MyWeb" portion of the link to configure the site. Here's my problem: I can't click on the "MyWeb" portion of this Administration site. I believe that I need to go there to add users and check the server extensions health of my web site. When I do I get the error: "HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found" at the following URL: http://MyWeb/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll?page=webadmin.htm I also cannot right-click in IIS 6.0 and check the Server Extensions of the Frontpage.     - ASP Logout I am using 'classic' ASP, trying to create logout functionality. The main site is publicly available (Enable anonymous access = true), and then a private sub-directory (and it's pages) are using Integrated Windows authentication (Enable anonymous access = false), usernames are stored in AD. Login works fine, in fact I have at the top of all the pages: Logged in as <%= Request("AUTH_USER") %> to verify the currently authenticated user. The problem is, in my logout.asp page, Session.Abandon does not log out the user. The following line: Response.Redirect("./default.asp") properly redirects, but does not prompt for user credentials, and the logged in username appears at the top of the page, indicating that in fact the user is still logged in. I got FTP working fine on it but our clients would like to access their files via HTML as well. I want HTML to be secured so they have to use a userid and password to get to their files. Let's say our company is sprockets.com and we have a client acme. I'd like them to be able to send them a link, go to www.sprockets.com/acme/linkedfile.jpg and be able to open the attachment but be required to give their userid and password.     - Self Signed Certificate and HTTPS with IIS I imported a self-signed certificate into IIS, and set up directory security with 128-bit SSL, but I can't seem to access the page using https://. As per Microsoft's instructions the certificate was imported into the the 'Personal' directory of the MMC console, and is not a trusted certificate. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?     - IIS 6.0 permission issue maybe? I have been trying to figure out what is going on with a page I have developed for some time now. I hope someone can help. I have an html page that is very straight forward: <form action="http://server/IT/itstatus.asp" method="get"> <input type="text" name="ITNUM"> <input type="button" name="Submit" value="Submit"> </form> This gets sent to my asp page that runs the query. Here is the problem. I can browse to this page fine and run the query, and it will redirect results for me on the asp page as it should. When others try to run the query it doesn't work. When they press the submit buttton nothing happens. When I press it the ASP page loads the query.     - MOM Web console and IIS 6 I'm not sure if this is a MOM problem or an IIS problem. I've installed MOM 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6. When I try to go to the web console from IE 7, it gives me an error page that says "This website requires you to log in," but it never gives me the option to enter credentials. When I try to access the web console from Firefox, it lets me enter my credentials, but then gives me the error "Directory Listing Denied." I'm using an admin user name, so there shouldn't be a problem with permissions. Also, if I allow Directory Browsing through IIS, it will let me see the folders and files in a directory list, but it doesn't show the actual web console UI. Any ideas?     - IIS + Apache Hi All, I have configured IIS on a Windows 2003 Hosting Server and it is currently listening to Port 80. I have also installed Apache which is running on Port 9091. I have already installed PHP Support for Apache which is working fine. Now, the scenario is that I want to host a Website on IIS but want to serve its content from Apache as they are all PHP Pages. In a perfect case, I would like to host my Website on IIS and host a Wordpress CMS on Apache. So, in the end, the pages displayed to the user will be loaded from Wordpress CMS hosted on Apache Webserver but the user will pass through IIS first. Try again in a few moments. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. -------------------------------- The original site works fine and when I enter that port (443) on a duplicated site, it still doesn't work.     - Website failing after hours Hi there We have been having a rather strange problem on one of our classic ASP websites for a couple of weeks now. During office hours when under load the site has 100% uptime. The problem is, that after hours (usually around 2 AM-6AM) and over weekends, when there are hardly any visitors, the site just becomes non responsive at times. It basically just times out. It runs on two Dell PowerEdge servers with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, a web server and seperate SQL server. The site is not that busy, only about 16 000 unique visitors per day, so it is not a server performance issue as we run decent hardware. The technologies used are IIS 6.0 and SQL Server 2000 with load balanced Cisco switches and firewalls between the DB and Web servers. There are no errors in the System or Application logs, the http performance log is also fine with nothing out of the ordinary. The symptoms are pretty strange, the site just starts timing out at night. There are no services scheduled at the time that the site goes down, it also does not go down at the same time every night or over weekends. When I restart IIS, the site comes back online for a while then just goes down again. However when I do not restart IIS, the site keeps on going online and offline at random until permanently recovering by itself around 6 AM before business hours and then staying online throughout the day for the cycle to repeat itself the following night. Because it only goes down at night, it basically rules out the majority off causes that I have looked at; - Performance issues on the servers (would have failed under load) - Anti-Virus/Firewall etc issues interfering with the server (would have caused problems during the day) - Website application issues (would have caused problems during the day and we use the same CMS for a few sites and we don't have issues on any other site) - Backups on the server (Backup schedule does not correlate with downtimes) - No errors reported in eventlogs or http performance logs - Windows updates (no updates were installed at the time that the problems started) - Server changes (there were no known changes to the servers at the time the problems started) What I am still looking at; - DoS attacks at night, however there is no evidence of this and we do not maintain the firewalls so log access is almost impossible and the ISP does not wan't to play along, which makes me a bit suspicious. - General network issues at night in the datacentre (this would however not explain why an IIS reset temporarily fixes the problem) - The site was working perfectly until a certain date, then suddenly it started going down. Trying to find out what changed. - What I find funny is that certain connections to the server seems to go through. For instance on one internet connection the site is available but on others it times out. It also times out on one connection only to work 10 seconds later after a refresh on the same. So it feels like something is interfering with sessions. My main focus is however still on IIS 6.0. I feel that is where the problem is but I am pretty much stumped currently. Anyone experieced anything similar? Know of what could be causing this? Sorry for the long and rambling explanation, if you need any more details please let me know. Thanks! I have a Windows Server 2003 Web edition box that has IIS 6 and the Sharepoint Sevices portal so that web editors can manage their sites (it is a hoting environment).     - Very Lost on what I want to do... Hey folks, I've done basic troubleshooting with standard web site installs on SBS with regard to IIS, but I am lost when it comes to my task below. For instance: If I type in "mail.myserver.com," is IIS going to go to a site? A directory off Default? Or a setup virtual directory? How does it know where to go?     - IWAM_machinename account not created during IIS installation I am trying to install IIS 6.0 on Windows 2003 with less than stellar results. I have attempted many searches in regards to this issue and seem to be finding very little information regarding it. I install IIS through the add/remove components option under Add/Remove Programs. After the installation is complete, I look under local accounts under computer management and notice that there is only the IUSR account and no IWAM account. Looking in groups, the IIS_WPG group is missing as well. When I open the IIS Admin console, it is completely blank. It mentions in the log file that it could not be created due to a password requirement not being met. Security policy shows that password length is 7 characters, complexity is disabled, password history is 24 and minimum age is 1. we have to move all our websites from an old server to a brand-new
server (both win2003 server, obviously).

Is there any tool to copy/mirror all configuration files of IIS7,
including ACL, permissions, files and all IIS7 settings from the old
server to the new one?
