    - require login and password Trying to setup IIS5.0 to require a login and password to be entered prior to accessing an asp page. I want this to use the Windows Users in order to allow/disallow access. I need to allow administrators to access the asp page but not a user. I've used the directory security tab/file security tab in the IIS settings and set it for Windows Integrated Authentication however, when the page is called, it asks defaults to the Guest account and will not allow entry of another user id.     - asp.net error I have prepared a .NET site on one machine, but when I try to move it to the server, I have problems. If I use a default.htm file, there is no problem. But with an aspx.htm file I get an error from the authentication section of the webconfig file. The error reads, "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configureed as an appliccation in IIS." As nearly as I can tell, IIS is set up identically on both machines. Any ideas?     - Can't Administer IIS remotely with MMC - Access Denied Hi, I am trying to administer IIS which is running on a Win2K Advanced Server machine (with Active Directory, i.e., it's a domain controller), from a Win2K Pro machine. The Win2K Pro machine is a member of the domain, and I'm logged in on the Win2K Pro machine as Administrator for the domain. When I start MMC and add the IIS Manager snap-in, and then right-click on that then connect to my Win2K Advanced Server, I am getting an "Access Denied" (0x5) error.     - Where is this "IIS snap-in"? After installing IIS 5.1, everything is going great. But to set up the ftp side of it it keeps referring to the ISS Snap-in. It tells me to open the Internet Services Manager in the Administrative tools. I only see and have been using the Intenet Information Services. I created a test web site with a :88 port on the same server. I installed front page server extension 2002 about 3 months ago. It is installed on the primary and default web sites. I can't get it installed on the newly created test site, which by the way is an exact folder copy of the primary web site.     - Unable to open default website at server - help? This is on a Small Business Server 2000, with 2 nics & the following symptoms. When I enter the server url (awc1.awc.local) in IE while at the server, I get a 403 error. Entering http://localhost will correctly give me the default website, no problem. If I enter the server IP I'm prompted for a login, entering administrator login works fine. Surfing to anything on the internet works fine. My question is why cant I bring up the default website by entering awc1.awc.local? I posted on the SBS group, but got no response.     - Redirecting to another IIS server ? Hello people, Here is my situation. I am sure this is a pretty stupid question, but I simply don't know the answer: I've got an IIS server that is available directly from the internet and which hosts several "normal" sites and a couple of SharePoint Sites, which are all reached using host header names. Works perfect. Now, to get the pressure a little bit of this machine, we would like to set up another server with IIS and host some the SharePoint sites on that machines. This second machine is not directly accessible via the internet. I can easily have the first server point towards the second server, but I cannot use the "a share located on another computer" option in the home directory tab of the server setup, since these SharePoint sites are WSS sites, which now work using databases. If I use the "a redirection to a URL" option, I can point to that second server, but that would be the internal address of that machine, not recognized from outside the company, so that won't work either.     - ADO and IIS Application Protection level I have an isapi application connecting to Oracle via ADO that works fine on my Win2000 workstation. But when I move the isapi dll to the production server (XP Terminal Server), the dll will only run if the Application Protection level is set to low. If the Application Protection level is set to medium or high, then the server never responds, and the process hangs when ADO attempts to connect to the db. (Problem occurs using the Microsoft Oracle drivers, and the Oracle Oracle drivers.) I need to have the Application Protection level set to medium or high. If I directly call the Oracle API to do the database access instead of ADO to access the database, everything works regardless of the Application Protection level. So the problem has something to do with starting ADO in the isapi dll, maybe some sort of permissions? I would like to stick with ADO for some of the features like producing xml.     - Pointing two addresses to Default Web Page I want to host a web site just for testing/learning exercises and have the incoming host name point to my Default Web Site. Also I want localhost to point to the same folder. I am running TZO Dynamic DNS in order to assign a port number different from 80 to the host name. My PC is connected through a Linksys router to the internet. I am running IIS6. I found a web site that tells how to put two different IP addresses on the same web site. http://www.iisanswers.com/Top10FAQ/t10-hostheaders.htm It suggests adding the sites to the Advanced menu and to be careful to specify the host name correctly but I cannot make it work for the two addresses. I can make either host work but not both at the same time.     - SSI on IIS on XPpro Using IIS (personal version) on XPpro. Cannot get SSI to work! .shtm is mapped to ssinc.dll (by default, but I checked anyway). Don't get an error message, simply get the htm file displayed with comments that still say <--#include file="filename.shtm"-->. I know the syntax is correct because it works when I move the files to the production machine. SO it seems like I need to enable SSI on my machine...but where? I've set the directory properties to allow scripts, I think (home directory tab > check "script source access" checkbox). I'm missing something fundamental...but I can't find it. Help?     - Problem with web sharing Hi all, For the longest time, I have successfully used IIS Websharing to furnish directories to my team. Recently, querys to the share would not resolve. I have gone so far as to remove / add IIS, and WebDAV again. It did not help. Currently, this is what is happening: Web-sharing enabled on c:\myTest on MyServer Queries to http://MyServer will generate an HTML-view of the file contents Queries to \\MyServer will not resolve ( "The network path was not found" ) Steps taken: Added IUSR to the Permissions list ( full control ) Double-checked the settings; Directory sharing is checked in IIS manager Enabled Anonymous and Integrated Windows Authentication. Platform: Windows Server 2003 and IIS6. ( all recent updates ) I know I could simply share this directory the conventional way, but since I use host headers to give shares distinctive roots, I really need to use IIS for sharing directories.     - IIS 5.0 and ADO locking up I've run into this problem recently and I haven't been able to pin it on anything. I've been doing ADO connections to Access databases for small databases before, but now they aren't working. I've double-checked the ASP code on two different pages, one that works and the new one and they are completely similar, I've even copied it over, but changed the paths. Here is a sample: <% Do While Not rsCat.EOF %>  <% rsCat.MoveNext Loop %> If I remove that part of the code the page works fine, but obviously doesn't show anything. The problem I'm having is that this will lock up the current site on my web server until I restart the site. I also get a few errors in the system event log such as Event ID 37, "Out of process application '/LM/W3SVC/1/Root' terminated unexpectedly." or "The Remote Procedure Call Failed and Did Not Execute." in the browser. The only help I've come across is that a possible Microsoft Patch for RPC could have caused it. I've updated to MDAC 2.8 on a different web server, but it seems to still have the same issues. The databases created earlier and the ASP pages they use still work fine, it seems to be anything I try to create now. Thanks in advance for any insight.     - Custom 500 Error Pages I've set up a custom 500 error ASP page that displays when I deliberately force a 500 error. In IE this page displays AS LONG AS THE VBSCRIPT CODE doesn't exceed 165 characters. Netscape thinks I'm trying to download a file of type application/octet-stream.     - IIS6 Server Application Unavailable I know there are tons of posts regarding this issue with IIS5.1 and there are quite a few with IIS6. My problem is a bit different though. I have ASP and ASP.NET running on Windows Server 2003. Whenever I hit an ASP.NET page, I get the Server Application unavailable message and it says to look in the event log. So I did... Nothing. So while reading through several posts it talks about security settings. I changed them all... Still Application Unavailable. Next I went into the App Pool that I have my site running under (by default it is set to run under NETWORK SERVICE) and I changed this to Local System. By gosh, the Application Unavailable message goes away. I don't want to run under Local System. I am sure this is just a permission problem, but I am not sure which folder to set permissions to that I haven't done already.     - Improving performance of a specific Cold Fusion webpage I run a third party application that uses compiled Cold Fusion web pages. I have been tracking any slow processes through Cold Fusion and determined that one .cfm page is used quite often and really is slowing down an important process. The .cfm page connects to a SQL Server db and uses a stored procedure (as best I can tell). I have tried to tune the Cold Fusion server and SQL Server and am only getting minor improvement. The % CPU utilized is really quite low on the server but the Cold Fusion performance monitor shows really bad performance when the specific .cfm file is called. I cannot recode the .cfm page itself to improve any code inefficiency as it is proprietary code so... Is there a good way to improve the performance of a specific .cfm page in IIS 5? One person suggested setting it up as a virtual directory but I am not sure if that is viable - would it really help improve performance? If any other information is needed please let me know.     - Custom error pages - how to access full HTTP request string When a page is requested and not found (common error 404), we can get control back at IIS level and, for instance, trough an ASP page, provide the user with some hints to redirect his request. Unfortunately, the custom error page (ASP) is not given any mean for retrieving variables of the request if those were sent through GET (or POST) method. QUERY_STRING variable contains the path to the page asked without "?variable=value" information, QueryString and Form collections are empty. The QUERY_STRING server variable is filled with "404;<original URL without parameters>". Do anyone have idea on how to get access to those parameters transferred by the browser to the server in the original request?     - Is it possible to install IIS 6.0 multiple times on one server? I have an applicatin that absolutely requires to be installed on the root of the default website. However, it seems like a waste to dedicate one server to one website when I know that IIS is capable of many more (as is my hardware).     - Datetime issues when querying SQL Server Hi, I have an IIS query that selects information from a table within SQL Server 2000. When the function is called, it gives error message "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e07'". A Datetime error. The line that fails is: SELECT Name, Description, Reason, StartDate, EndDate, Forename, Surname FROM V_GetPartnerships WHERE PartnershipId = 2 AND (StartDate <= 'Wednesday, October 29, 2003' AND EndDate >= 'Wednesday, October 29, 2003') ORDER BY name; The datetime field works OK when using correct date terms, as tested by manually manipulating the date format, it is only when it using this extended 'Wednesday, October 29, 2003' that is NOT recognised by the field. I have checked the outputs of the date formats using a simple VB script, and they are as expected (i.e. October 29, 2003). Where is it getting this extended date from?? This database has been developed over several years and recently migrated to new servers. This error only appears on the new system. It DOES NOT affect the old system.     - ISS error Hello all, I am running Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2000 Domain Controler. I would like to use OWA but IIS keeps coming up with errors. When I bring up "Internet Services Manager" three of the default webpages (public, Exchange, Exadmin) have a red "Error" symbol beside them instead of the typical folder & globe icon. When I restart IIS the error symbol goes away, but the websites still don't work. It looks like IIS is having trouble creating the Virtual root directories from the event log. This leads me to believe it is a permission based issue.     - Tough IIS Problems - help needed! (2nd request) Hello, I am trying to use IIS 5.1 with my OEM XP Pro (SP1). I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled IIS from the XP CD, but I still have the same problem. I can go into the MMConsole, but when I start the IIS application, I only get the top level of directory tree item of IIS. There are no web sites or FTP sites displayed or that can be expanded in the IIS window. The tree does not have a "+" sign next to it to expand. How do I get IIS to show my "wwwroot" (it is there on the c:\drive) in the directory tree structure of the IIS window? Is this a security rights issue? I am logged on as an administrator. What do I have to turn on or change security on to make IIS work? Something appears to be "broken" in the software, and I haven't been able to find any other posts or information to correct this issue. I have installed XP Pro (SP1) on separate laptop and the IIS worked just fine. I have installed all of the Windows updates as of 10-27-03. I have .net installed versions 1 and 1.1. Some new information - If I go into MMC, services, and try to start IIS, I get the following message: "Could not start IIS Admin service on local computer; Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start." Also, when trying to install the Message Queing Client off of the XP Pro CD, I get an error message:"Queing Client Setup Failure; Error Code 0x42c; Error Description - The dependency service or group failed to start." I tried to uninstall everything again starting with .net; however, the msi file was missing and .net 1.0 would not uninstall. I did uninstall all other networking applications, .net 1.1, IIS, IE, and then reinstalled again. The interserv folder under the system32 folder did not have a metabase.bin file. I could not find a metabase.bin file anywhere on my PC except on an old hard drive d:. I copied that metabase.bin file to the interserv folder to see if anything changed, but IIS still would not show my computer (same problem as before) and I could not start IIS (same error as before). since there was no change, I then deleted the metabase file. I cannot restore my metabase.bin as suggested in one of the MS knowledgebase articles because it talks about Windows NT 4.0, (which I don't have) because it does not exist, and reinstalling IIS doesn't put or create another copy on my computer. IIS5.1 is a restricted use version. there is no such restriction in
IIS6.0

so the answer is : more than you probably need (!) to both questions

Windows 2003 Server family have unlimited connections and unlimited
connections.....

so the only considerations are:

how many sites do you want on your hard drive(s)
how many connections can your DSL/T1/T3 line handle

Whichever you decide on, it should be enough to keep you busy for a while

IIS 6.0 do not have any limitations like this. You are probably limited by
your hardware/Internet Connection.
