    - DebugDiag Analysis Hi all, I'm currently trying to find the source of a critical section lock/leak which is causing ASP queueing. Very quick question about the user dump output that DebugDiag produces: I have imported the private symbols for the COM objects that the site uses, and the trace gives me the function names that are executing on the stack - brilliant! However, the in the 'Source' column, the output looks a bit like this: C:\MyPath\MyClass.cls @ 289 + 116 The first line number (289) does indeed correspond to the right function in the source code, but what does the + 116 signify?     - Redirection. Hi all. I'm hosting two sites on my XP PC. I would like to redirect a user based on the url entered in the browser. For example, a user enters www.somewhere.com and I'd like to send them to a virtual site/dir for that url. When a user enters www.somewhereelse.com, I'd like to redirect them to a different virtual site/dir. I've read a lot on the web about redirection, but I think I need some code to get the url from the request (I guess), then redirect based on that info.     - Stop IIS6 App Pool from hanging I'm the server administrator for a small business and I have one app pool that is very problematic. There is one web site in the app pool that receives some pretty heavy usage (40-50k visitors a day). However, the server has specs that I'm sure should be able to handle it, and was handling it well until a couple of months ago. Ever since then, we've had nothing but problems. The app pool hangs frequently - typically around every 20 minutes or so, if that. As an initial attempt, I changed some settings in the app pool and in the metabase file, but nothing seems to work quite well enough. I tried adding an extra worker to the web garden, increasing thread request limits, etc. all without success. My initial instinct was that the problem is ASP code related, so I've spent quite a few days optimizing and fine tuning code everywhere. As a temporary "fix", I've enabled a frequent 5 minute worker recycle on the app pool. This helps a lot, but does not FIX the problem. To diagnose the problem, I've looked in the event viewer and I've run DebugDiag numerous times. Some common errors/warnings I get in the event viewer are: - A process serving application pool 'PSX Extreme' exceeded time limits during shut down. The process id was '3892'. (I'm pretty sure this means something went wrong with a recycle?) - Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.1830, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x05c07dc8. The following are typical errors I get in DebugDiag: - The following threads in w3wp.exe__PSX Extreme__PID__3892__Date__06_28_2008__Time_10_44_12PM__609__IIS_COM+ Hang Dump.dmp are displaying a message box. The call to display the message box originated from user32!NtUserWaitMessage+c. The text of the message being displayed is: ( 11 ) 1.47% of threads blocked - A COM+ STA Activity Pileup has been detected in w3wp.exe__PSX Extreme__PID__5600__Date__06_28_2008__Time_10_44_17PM__609__IIS_COM+ Hang Dump.dmp.     - Brain gone bad. Hi all. I've done this is the past and seemed to have hit a mental block. I want to host two additional domains on my IIS6 server. I've got my IIS and DNS setup all good, have for quite a while. I've setup Host headers and virtual directories.     - IIS on Windows 2k Advanced Server Hello I am trying to install IIS on Windows 2k Advanced Server, and I am able to proceed to the install. Setup asks me for a variety of files from the CD and I am able to find them. Then it asks me for 'IIS_finance.asp1,' which I can't find anywhere on the 2k Advanced Server disk.     - Asp.net hosting I have redone my website with Asp.net. All the files have been copied to the website , replacing the old ones. The enitire directory has been preserved.The new files have the main page at Default.aspx, while the old site had Index.html. Now the website is not accessible from the internet.     - Kerberos authentication not working to IIS over SSL I have a very basic setup in a lab. I have a Win2003 AD server, a Win2003 server running IIS, and a winXP laptop. They are all in the same domain. I would like to get a user accessing IIS to use kerberos authentication and not get prompted for a username and password. The IIS server has joined the domain and in AD, I have the checkbox for trusted delegation. In IIS, I have unchecked the "Allow anonymous logins" under the Authenctication section. I have not set any SPNs manually. The hostname of the AD server is "ADbox" the hostname of the IIS server is "iisbox". The domain is "demo.com". On the AD server, I added the DNS name iisbox.demo.com to point to the IIS server. On the laptop, in IE6, I'm putting the following url's and get the following results: http://iisbox - works fine, not prompted for a username or password, uses my domain credentials and allows me to the website directly. http://iisbox.demo.com - works fine https://iisbox - works fine https://iisbox.demo.com - DOES NOT work. I can't figure out why accessing the IIS server over SSL does not work only when using the FQDN. Does SSL with IIS use a different worker process that I need to register an SPN with? Any thoughts?     - Website SPN issue for a Subdomain I use kerberos and SPN's all the time but have currently found myself in a boggle with this setup. Usually if I have a website that has a host header of let's say msdn.microsoft.com which runs under say a service account named svc-dev-website then for that service account I would set the SPN as: http/msdn http/msdn.microsoft.com and kerberos would work with no problems. Now I have a host header on my website like this one.msdn.microsoft.com and it runs under a service account so for this I would think to set the SPN's like above so I would end up with http/one http/one.msdn.microsoft.com But this is not working!     - IWAM Logon Fails Hi guys, Just setting up IIS on a 2000 server (with Citrix XenApp) but have run into a problem I can not get around. I keep getting these two errors: The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was 'The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. DCOM got error "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. " and was unable to logon .\IWAM_MACHINENAME in order to run the server: And IWAM_MACHINENAME does not show in my AD listings (nor does IUSER_MACHINENAME).     - One domain hosting multiple machines I am a database developer who does web development (more than I like). Thus, much of the plumbing of iis is a mystery to me. Here is what I am trying to do. We have an intranet site hosted on IIS 6 (Windows 2003 I believe): devnet.mysite.com. We have created an application called MyApp that we can access from devnet.mysite.com/MyApp. There are other applications (mostly php) that are tied to the root of the site. Here is what I want to do: most of the applications on devnet.mysite.com will be hosted on one machine, but MyApp will be hosted on a separate machine. Can this be done?     - Connections being dropped Hi folks, We are doing some performance testing on a tiered app - IIS>WebSphere>SQL2005. We are running some scripts to emulate multiple users interacting with the app. IIS is a front end only - no apps installed on IIS other than Websphere plugin. As we move above 10 concurrent users we lose around 50% of connections with the following HTTPErr entries: Connection_Dropped DefaultAppPool Connection_Abandoned_By_AppPool Defaultapppool No Windows Event errors are occuring. At the test client we receive a "Socket error on port 80". We are running some perf counters across the board and some other testing to identify bottlenecks, but I am looking for some general advice on these errors and/or on maximising IIS potential for multiple connections.     - Issues with an application pool and identitys Ok, This is the case I have a web site which is sitting in its own app pool running under the network service. Under it, I have a virtual directory sitting in a totally different pool running under a dedicated AD user. The web site in itself works fine with no issues, but the virtual directory does let you view ANYTHING... not even an htm page forget about asp or aspx. Troubleshooting: 1. No events, No logs, just an annoying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" (and yes this is the full error) 2. When changing the app pools identity to network service, the virtual directory works fine... but obviously i need the identity:) 3.     - Pass through authentication We are having issue with pass through authentication for IE 7 . It works correclty with IE6 but we get a 401 error with later versions of IE. It looks like the settings in IE are correct. It picks the dev site up as local intranet and i have set all settings to allow the pass through authentication but we still get the error. I have added a group and in some cases a single person to verify.     - Hosting I am hosting two websites. The home page for both were index.html and everything was fine. I re-did one of them using Asp.net and now the home page now is Default.aspx. Any page or resource I try to render returns the error below, and I get similar errors when I try to configure the site in the IIS console. Module IIS Web Core Notification BeginRequest Handler Not yet determined Error Code 0x8007007b Config Error Cannot read configuration file Config File \\?\c:\Inetpub\wwwroot/ni\web.config I'll reproduce exactly how I got to this point: it might suggest a clue: 1) I set up a DFS replication on the wwwroot of my old machine and replicated the wwwroot from that machine to the wwwroot on the new machine. This wiped out a few files that were previously in place on the new machine. Don't know if that matters or not. 2) For now the new machine, a Server 2008 machine, is set up both as a domain controller on a legacy 2003 domain and with IIS, which is not intended to be the production configuration. This caused the following error when I first installed: The Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) encountered an error attempting to look up the built in IIS_IUSRS group. There may be problems in viewing and setting security permissions with the IIS_IUSRS group. This happens if the machine has been joined and promoted to be a Domain Controller in a legacy domain. Please see the online help for more information and solutions to this problem. The data field contains the error number. The "event data" (I think that's the error number" is 34050780. 3) The directory I'm trying to run as an application is c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ni. I configured it as an application by expanding the default web site, right clicking on the subdirectory, and filling in the appropriate information. 4) I get this error no matter what resource I try to request. Even a static HTML or image file yeilds the error. 5) There is no web.config file at c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\. This mirrors the setup on my old IIS installation. I am wondering if IIS7 has different expections about what should be in the web.config, or if I'm doing something else wrong. I tried monkeying with the compat mode of the AppPool, but that makes no difference. For some reason IIS7 is not reading in my web.config. The app is a ASP.NET 3.5 application. For example, www.mysitename.com renders the site in english and www.mysitename.com/default.aspx?lang=fr will render the site in french.     - Subdomain help needed please: Noob Hi, I want to be able to point a wildcard DNS entry so it resolves to an IP address on my server. I have a domain name which is hosted at GoDaddy and I am using their Nameservers. I went in and added a host entry for the main website (This website is hosted on another server) and it resolves fine. I then went and added in a wildcard entry (*) and specified that it point to the IP address of my server. Unfortunately, 56 hours on, it is still not resolving.     - SMTP using IIS 6.0 I am using CDO from my VB code to send automated emails. I did not configure the default SMTP server at alll, but it works fine for emails on my intranet.     - worker process threads Hi, got an ASP.NET 2.0 application, that evry so often, causes the number of threads used by a w3wp process to rapidly ncrease to over 150!! I have configured the site with 3 worke process (web garden). Server is twin Dual core 3GHZ with 4GB Ram running W2K3R2 When we find that that the threads have gone over 50-60, we also notice that the users experience slowness. If i recycle the app pool service the site, after about 2 mins it runs fine, until the next time. Any ideas where to look.     - IIS admin console not working Hi, I have a problem viewing my IIS admin console on my server, the shortcut from the administrative tools is missing, and I cannot se it either on the manage my computer snap-in. The IIS is installed on the server, I can see it on the add/remove windows components, but I cannot open the IIS administration console. Even the services are running! I have installed OCS 2007 on this server, so I cannot just remove and reinstall the IIS. I even got to the iis.msc file on system32/inetsrv/ and tried to open it from there but I only get and error that say MMC could not create the snap-in. I can connect to the IIS through another server, but cannot assign or edit certificates remotely, I need to do this on the server. Please help, any advice is very much welcome.     - Problems with WebDAV publishing - odd redirects with virtual I am experiencing an unexpected behavior with the Microsoft WebDAV service and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or could suggest any fix. I have a Windows 2003 SBS server whose netbios name is "server". I am trying to enable WebDAV access to files on this server for users on our VPN. (I'm trying to avoid passing CIFS traffic over the VPN.) I set up a new web site in IIS on port 8000 and created virtual directories in the root of this site to all the folders I want to share on the server. I have also set access permissions so that the site is only accessible from the LAN and VPN network segments. I have successfully tested connecting to the server from the VPN using Windows XP and "My Network Places", using the private IP address of the server (i.e., setting the destination of the network place to something like http://192.168.1.10:8000/ which routes correctly over the VPN). I can list the directories in the root of the site and open any real directories in the document root, but whenever I try to open a virtual directory (for example, a virtual directory called "users" that points to E:\Users\), I get an error message that "The folder http://server/users is no longer available". Note that the address listed in the error message shows the netbios name of the server, which is different from the address I used to get to the server and is not resolvable by DNS on the machine I am using, since it is connected only via VPN. I tried adding an entry in the hosts file on the client machine and this changed the error I get when I try to open the folder: the address changes visibly in the address bar to http://server/users/, and Explorer appears to try to list the contents of the directory but ends up giving an error saying "Documents in this folder are not available. The folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing a connection to the server." I also get an error if I try to open a file from a non-virtual directory on the WebDAV server -- opening a text file, for example, triggers an error in Notepad that "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". This error occurs regardless of whether or not I have the hosts file entry in place. I have tried connecting to the WebDAV server using Internet Explorer instead of My Network Places, and I get a bare-bones directory listing that does not include the virtual directories. However, if I manually enter the address of one of the virtual directories (i.e., type "http://192.168.1.10:8000/Users/" into the address bar), I am able to see the contents of the directory and even open files. David Wang was kind enough to respond back then, I hope he or someone else will again this time. The problem I have now is that the solution I describe below does not seem to work on XP anymore either. Has the security been tightened up on XP (perhaps in SP3 or some update), so that I cannot make IIS "interact with the desktop"? In addition to the changes below I've also changed the userName for the ASP.NET process to "SYSTEM", but that also seems to have no effect. On XP I could use the Properties Dialog ("Log On" tab) and check the "Allow service to interact with desktop" box.     - Adding more memory to win2k3 server causing CPU spike on worker process(w3wp.exe Hi, we tried to add 2GB of additional physical memory to the existing server running windows 2003 std with IIS6 with 2GB, this memory change is causing CPU spikes on w3wp.exe process to 100% almost all the time, is there any idea why adding more memory to the server causing CPU spike on worker process(w3wp. exe) we had to rollback the memory to fix the spike. is there any changes i need to make to use 4 GB of total memory on windows 2003 std 32bit server.     - Unexpected authorization request when web site moved Problem: trying to move web sites to a second controller in my domain, and I'm getting unwanted request for authentication. Detail: when the IP address of the site is on the domain controller, I attempt to access it with IE. If I've set the site up in IIS, I see it, if I don't, I get a page not found. As expected. If I move the IP to the second controller, and attempt to access it with IE, I get an immediate request for user ID and password, whether or not the site is defined in IIS. As a side note, any new sites I set up can be accessed without the user ID / password request appearing. Am I missing some permission somewhere? What do I need to do to resolve this? I can't seem to find anywhere in the user profile (user->info-
>properties) that shows an email address and that's what I get in SBS.

Second question (in case the first was too easy) why do bounced mails
for name@otherdomain.com go to fred@domain.com? It's a bit
embarrassing for me when one of my customers is getting another
customer's bouncers.

Third question (in case you're still reading): I'm more used to LINUX
servers and use Webmin. Is there a windows equivalent so I don't have
to log in using MSTSC and go through all these poxy right-clicks that
lead nowhere?
