Hi all...

I don't know why but my inetinfo.exe is using up 100% of
my CPU resources.

I have:
a. Updated and checked for viruses.
b. A pretty decent personal firewall.
c. A single index.html page. No scripts... no funky stuff.
Plain html only.
d. Port 80 open.
e. Used MS Baseline Security Check.
f. Used SpyBot to check for spyware.
g. I have not installed anything new.
h. All my Windows patches are current.
i. No configurations have been changed recently.

Everytime, anything hits my IIS on port 80... my
inetinfo.exe goes crazy. Takes up 100% CPU resources. Even
if I try to load it from my own 2nd machine within the
same network.

It is only port 80... because for FTP... ports 20-21 are
fine. It does not make IIS go crazy.

If someone has any ideas... can you please email me? It
only started happening today (9th May 04).

Regards,
Jek Tan

Next time it happens, run IISState (www.iisfaq.com/iisstate) and post the
log.

iisstate -p <pid of inetinfo> <enter>

Thanks for the idea Pat. However, IISState needs Microsoft
DDK pack and at this point in time I can't afford it.

Anyone else with any ideas?

Jek

You don't have to pay for anything. Download IISState from:
http://www.iisfaq.com/default.aspx?view=P197
and it will download appropriate symbols from the MS servers.

Alternatively, you can download the debugger pack manually, but you don't
have to pay Microsoft for that.

Cheers
Ken

Jek

You could try this:
http://weblogs.asp.net/stevencohn/articles/59782.aspx?Pending=true It shows
how to set up a second IIS web server - which you can use and ignore the
original one. I tried it and the inetserver problem went away. But it
created another problem in that my ODBC connections stopped working. Then it
gets hazy - I tried so many things I can't remember them all or even the
sequence of what went wrong.

But at some point I re-installed XP and then (I think) I got the problem.
Then I found all the critical updates had disappeared so I downloaded and
installed them and I was fine again, using the original server and
everything is fine.

So maybe the answer is reinstall XP, re-install all the ciritical updates.

Good luck

John

Thank Ken...

For whatever weird reason... no configurations changed...
no Firewall rules changed... nothing.

I downloaded IISState and ran it. Now the CPU load is
normal. *scratches head*

I don't know whether to feel happy that it has stopped or
whether to be worried that I don't know the true cause of
the problem.

Thanks anyway.

Jek Tan
