    - IIS Worker Process not caught if DEP set to essential Windows bina We have an application built using ASP pages that use Crystal RDC 10 components to view reports. The issue results because the report uses functions added to the Crystal framework using a Visual Basic component to add custom functions (Crystal Reports User Function Library or CRUFL). Crystal support has confirmed this as a known issue with Crystal RDC 10 and servers running Windows 2003 Sp1 that support hardware nased DEP. They do not currently plan to fix this in version 10. What happens is that the report using the CRUFL will not appear in the Crystal Viewer under IIS. Instead, a message is logged to the System event log stating that a "fatal comminucations error occured". With rapid-fail protection enabled under IIS, the application pool will be automatically stopped. We hav identified two possible solutions: 1) Set DEP on for esstential winows binaries and services 2) Set DEP for all applications and services, but add the IIS Worker Process (w3wp.exe) to the exception list. What I'm having a trouble understanding is why the issue is not still happening when the option is set for "essential windows binaries and services". My question are: 1) Isn't w3wp.exe considered an essential windows binary? 2) Is it possible that this setting allows the Crystal RDC components to be excluded from DEP even though the root application is w3wp.exe? 3) Is there a way to add components to the exception list or is this limited to applications? After running fine for a while, suddenly the dllhost process uses 100% of CPU, but the traffic on the web site is minimal. I have attached IISState to the dllhost process, and created a output file.     - Max length of a http post in IIS 5.0 on a w2k server Hi, I'm trying to submit a form with a textarea-field, which has about 80'000 characters. Somehow the server receives only a certain amount of data (about 30'000 bytes). I've been trying to get some info on this problem, and what I found were http://support.microsoft.com/?id=820129 (INF: Http.sys Registry Settings for IIS) and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260694 (Description of the MaxClientRequestBuffer Registry Value). Unfortunately these are describing how update IIS 6.0 and/or Windows 2003 server, but I'm running IIS 5.0 on a Windows 2000 server. Thus I couldn't find any http.sys or it's entry in the registry. Are there any equivalent actions I could take to achieve the same results in my particular environment? Basically what I'm looking for is to increasing the amount of data, which can be read/processed through a http post. I appreciate your help! On the iis I used a modified php.ini-recommend. I thought this might be the issue so I used the same php.ini on my test server(mentioned above) and again all scripts worked without flaw.     - Login problems I am hoping this might be the correct newsgroup to post to. I apologize if not. I am running an ASP 2.0 site on IIS 5.1. I have a strange problem and I am not sure where to look. When a user goes to the URL, the login does not work. As i wanted to run my web application on IE, i am however unable to view the result of my coding in my web application. The error message is as shown below: Server Error in 'my directory/webapp'. Server cannot access application directory "c:/my directory/webapp". The directory does not exist or is not accessible because of security settings. I do not know how to rectify this problem. The SBS2k3 LAN is not networked to the NT4 Web Server. Both the SBS2k3 and the NT4 server are connected to the Router LAN using the external NICS of both servers. CEICW Firewall is setup so that it opens HTTP ports 8080 and 8443. The router is configured via UPnP. A manual Router entry directs all HTTP:80 traffic to the NT4 Server. All other traffic is directed to SBS2k3. The SBS2k3 IIS Default server has port 8080 added to its response addresses and 8443 to its secure addresses. Ports 80 and 443 are still enabled To reach the SBS2k3 from the WAN the user enters http://mycompany.com:8080/ and reaches the Welcome Page without a problem. The Welcome Page is also available when the user enters https://mycompany.com/. Any secure sites are reachable by entering https://mycompany.com/remote , https://mycompany.com/exchange etc or by entering the Welcome page via https with or without port numbers. The PROBLEM? The only link on the welcome page that works after entering via http://mayconpany.com:8080/ ; is Information and Answers.     - socket pooling in iis6 I need to disrupt socket pooling in Iis6. I'm reading a KB article on how to do it. The following is a quote: "By default, IIS 6.0 listens on all IP addresses. You can specify the IP addresses IIS will listen on by adding them to the IP inclusion list." Suppose I've three IP addresses: - 192.168.1.1 - 172.16.1.1 - 10.1.1.1 According to the quote, Iis6 listens to all three addresses. I move 172.16.1.1 to some sort of inclusion list for Iis6 to listen to this address. What's the net effect?     - IIS Crashes When ASP.Net 2.0 Thread Pool Closes I've been working on an ASP.Net 1.1 application and have recently switched it to ASP.Net 2.0. On the development machines everything runs fine but on the server we get an IIS crash 20 minutes after the last person logs out. I've installed DebugDiag (Microsofts latest IIS debugging offering) and have included a output from its analysis. The function that seems to be crashing is webengine!CorThreadPoolCompletionCallback in c:\WINDOWS\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\webengine.dll.     - IIS ignoring connections I've got a Windows 2003 server (sp1) running IIS with all current updates installed. Periodically, but not consistantly, it starts ignoring all incoming requests. I have placed network sniffers on both sides of the router serving this machine and have verified that the ethernet packets are getting through to the machine. If I pull the cable from the port or reset the router, then IIS starts responding to traffic again. The machine is an older Intel quad Xeon server, the ethernet port being used is built into the motherboard (PnP recognizes it as an Intel 82559). Until the file "ages-out" of the kernel mode cache, IIS 6.0 will not respond with the correct HTTP headers to tell the client browser to again use it's locally cached copy until it again ages out from the local client cache. To make matters worse, since the the kernel mode provided a response to the client, it resets its own aging mechanism, thus further delaying the file from aging out of the kernel mode cache and subsequently allowing the user mode process to respond with the correct headers. For a heavily requested file, the kernel mode cache may hang on the the file for a very long time and the clients will never know they can still find the file in their local cache. On a heavily used site with web pages comprised of many sub-requests of stylesheets, external Javascript, and images, this behavior can be seriously detrimental to the overall IIS web server performance. Once a file ages out of the client browser's cache, if that file is still in the IIS kernel mode cache, all subsquent requests for the file cause a round-trip between the client and server. This is needless traffic for a file which should instead have one additional "conditional GET" and subsequently found in the client browser's local cache. The only decent workaround for the problem I seem to have uncovered in the kernel mode cache is to disable it entirely via setting the "UriEnableCache" registry key to zero found under "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters". Fortunately, since most of the static files, in my setup, iwill be found in the client browser cache due to enabling HTTP headers at the server, I don't lose much of the promised benefit of IIS 6.0 kernel mode caching because the server will not have the crush of requests after the client browsers start to re-request the previously cached files. Is there a way to compute some kind of rough estimates as to what kind of processor, memory etc. would be required using web traffic data. We have on average about 600 users (peak about 1000), averaging 20 hits/sec peak (70 hits/sec). Most of the pages served are static html pages or images.     - Email program won't send in Windows 2003 - Queue_Manager Hello, I have a client that just switched to Windows 2003 server. Their website has always run fine under Windows 2000, using an email program queue_manager.exe to send order and support emails (sending a receipt to the sender). This seems to work under Windows 2003, but won't send the email. I suspect it's a security configuration issue, but can't seem to pin point it (since I am a novice with 2003 server).     - Host Header confusion Host Header confusion. I have 2 sites I want to share a single IP. I understand how to use host headers to do this. But what I do not get is how to make sure they server different content. There is no setting to map a host header to a single document of virtual directory.     - IIS 6 Compression speed increases.. hello all.. i'm going to be upfront and say that i'm a developer, not a server admin but am stuck wearing the hat for part of a project.. we've enabled compression on our webserver and made the appropriate changes in our code to handle the compressioin.. i know its all setup properly and working as i've been monitoring the traffic to and from the server.. i'm not happy with the speed increase that we got when we moved from our test lab to the prod. server. i'm thinking that the prod. server isn't sufficient for the job.. our test server is a P4 3GHz (HT) with 2 GB ram, while our prod server is P4 2Ghz with 1 GB of ram. the speed difference between the two is significant. would the difference in specs between the two servers be enough to justify the speed increase? we will have a Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz (HT) with 4GB of ram available to host the app. i guess i'm looking for some opinions on what to do.. what counters should i be monitoring etc. for what its worth the client tier of the app is windows forms, business tier are webservices (most of which returning datasets).. thanks guys Tag: IIS httperror 500.18 Help need Tag: 375029

    - Slowresponse by machine name, fast w/Localhost? I'm developing some basic asp.net stuff locally. The code works fine, no errors. If I hit it this way: http://localhost/mypage.aspx it runs great. If I hit it this way: http://machinename.domain.com/mypage.aspx it takes about 30 seconds before it returns the page on the first session hit. After that, it runs great during that session. This wouldn't be a problem except that the development of this work is being monitored by my boss. I installed it properly.When I open the Administratove tools => Internet Information Services everything opens up fine. When I try to expand the local computer, nothing expands.     - Understanding Domain Forwarding I am trying to understand how the processing of forwarded domains works. Here is the environment: I have 2 domain names registered, "main.com" and "second.com" as examples. "main.com" is hosted on a shared hosting site and the DNS pointers for "main.com" point to that site. "main.com" has a subdirectory named "second" where the pages for the alternate web site are stored - http://main.com/second - which has its own default.aspx file. http://main.com/second is defined as an application root. "second.com" is forwarded to "http://main.com". In the default.aspx file on main.com I have code that checks the HTTP_REFERER server variable and if the URL entered was "http://second.com" it does a Response.Redirect to http://main.com/second. All of that works but I am having a problem running the "second.com" application. In that application I have a login form which, after validating the login, sets a session variable to the value of the logged in user's ID and then does a Response.Redirect to another page in the application. When I get to that next page, the sesion variable is blank? I verified that just before the Response.Redirect the session variable is set correctly. If, instead of starting the application using http:/second.com (the forwarded domain) I use http://main.com/second, everything works?     - Integrated IIS Authentication Hey everyone, I'm currently setting up webservers for use within our organisation. We use Integrated Authentication to authenticate users who access our intranet (etc). Most users use our workstations and login to our domain and there are no problems (authentication is seemless). Some users have (corporate) laptops which we have them logging into locally (so they can login when they are away/at home/etc). When these users access the webserver, the credentials for the local account (which - mind you, are the same as their domain account) are passed through to the webserver. The authentication fails because the webserver is not a domain controller - and therefore wont authenticate the user back to the domain. Users are prompted for a password which they need to enter in the {Domain}\{Username} format. Our file-servers double as domain controllers so this is no problem when they try to access shares (etc), but i would prefer to have our webservers as member servers.     - Setting up IIS for MELL After installing MELL and going to a workstation (or event the server) and using the URL http://<servername>/mell or http://<servername>/mell/eng I receive the error 404. The IIS is a 2003 Server (latest updates/SP), SQL server 2000 (latest updates/SP), and SMS (latest updates/SP). Are there additional setting I must use because of the SMS?     - Web interface for uploading and downloading files from https site I have a secure web page setup and it is to be used for file transfers with outside "partners" of my company. Outside users can download files from the website but I'd like to setup a web page that will take their credentials, allow them to browse whatever they have access to and download and upload files. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a way to do this that doesn't involve mega-programming knowledge? What I'm looking for is something like the following: ** Transfer Files (page heading) (radio button here) Send Files to <my company> (radio button here) Receive Files from <my company> Password: (text box here) GO (active button) ** User selects either Send or Receive and enters their password and they are taken to their folder where they can download or upload.     - Event 4786 COM+ error, please help Hi everyone, I hadn't touched an asp/aspx web application running on my localhost for several weeks, and when I try to hit either an asp or aspx page I get a 500 server error. When I hit the aspx page I get a pop up box in my IE browsers which says that "COM Surrogate has encountered a problem and needs to close." In the event viewer event 4786 is logged with event 1000. I also get event 1001, "Fault Bucket 247724115" event 4786 is "The system has called a custom component and that component has failed and generated an exception." I have no idea why that would apply in my situation, seeing as how there have been no code changes in the last month at least. I'd appreciate an input. Thanks!
