    - problems with .LNK files in IIS6 Hi all I have a directory on my web server where I have placed some shorcuts (.lnk files). I can see the .lnk files listed with my browser when I connect to the directory in question. but the web server always returns "404 file not found" whenever I click on one of them Any other file in this directory is fine for example. 'test.txt' works ok but 'test.lnk' doesnt - i just get 404, but the file is there, and the permissions are ok. I think its something to do with the file extension ".lnk" - can anyone help me with this.     - IE, sockets and IIS I'm seeing some strange behaviour with a website I'm building and I want to understand why this is occurring. Some background: First, I'm testing on a win2kpro so I'm limited to 10 connections. The site uses a lot of frames and almost every frame has images. I'm running an MSwast stress test for another website from the same machine. Now, sometimes when I browse the site with IE I get the "page unavailable" error in some frames and some images don't show up. After a refresh they appear again. This only started this morning so I'm thinking that it's because of mswast. When I look with netstat I'm seeing a lot of socket connections so I'm wondering if IE is unable to create anymore socket connections to IIS. And that's what I want to know. How does IE(6) handle frames and images at the low level? Does it create a socket for every frame and image? what happens if IIS can't create anymore sockets?     - IIS6 on w2k3 suddenly stops for a few seconds Hi! We have a w2k3 (web edition) on a web server. When the number of connections reaches a bit over 400 all network traffic through iis stops. The visitors get this message: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. The httperr-logs does not report anything about a recycle. We have tried to shut down "enable pinging" under "application pool->health". We have also shut down "enable rapid-fail protection" but neither gave any difference. We tried to run the iis6 as iis5 by enable that feature. But with the same result. The big question is why! We have changed switch, network card and such. The same machine has been running with windows 2000 without any problems for a long time, so I dont believe its any hardware problems. We are running other web servers on windows 2000 with iis5 that holds over 1800 connections without any problems. My connection string is: "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=x;Initial Catalog=x; User ID=x; Password=x;Network Library=dbmssocn;" It seems that it has to do with the number of connections but I am not sure. But directly after the "iis network" has died everything works for a few minutes until we have around 400 connections and then it dies again. We tried to have a ping-script running while testing and we can still ping the sql-server and all other things in our network but the iis6 (asp-pages) cannot connect to the sql-server.     - Why are .js files processed and altered in IIS? Hi, I'm developing an ordinary website for my client. So far so good. On every page one or more .js-files is included (client side), everything works just fine on my server as well as on the clients until a few weeks ago. But on my clients server some text (company specific informations, looks a bit like a page footer or something) is added to the end of every single .js-file. They look good if I download them through FTP, but for some reason they are being changed when I download them through a browser. My client, of course, knows nothing about how this happened. Everything was working fine on their server until a few weeks ago, when they installed some service packs on the server. Since then some application obviously processes the .js-files when they are called through the IIS. I doubt it has anything to do with the service packs, but my client is not aware of having done any other changes to the server. I checked the web server configuration on their server (Application configurations -> App mappings), there are no mappings for the .js extension there. Where else can I look for info about this, find out what happens to the .js-files and why?     - Reinstall IIS 5.0 problem I got an error when I tried to reinstall IIS 5.0. The error message is "Setup could not copy one or more files. The specific error code is 0x5. I have 2 websites on the same machine SSL.MyMachine.com Normal.MyMachine.com I want the guy who hits SSL.MyMachine.com to only be able to use port 443 and never port 80 I want the guy who hits Normal.MyMachine.com to only be able to use port 80 and never port 443. That is because I do not want some guy going to https:/SSL.MyMachine.com/data on port 443 then changing the URL to https:/Normal.MyMachine.com/data because that is a whole different web site. How do i require ONLY 443 on one site and ONLY 80 on the other. Becuase the secure portion does not use Host headers!!!! Armored Truck analogies are welcome!     - Broke Web Management of Printers OK, this worked before I stayed up too late and did something stupid: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/defaul t.asp? url=/windows2000/en/server/help/sag_PRINTconcepts_19.htm I was changing some defaults in IIS and it prompted me (warned) to see if I wanted to change some specifics (default document name I believe I was changing) regarding a number of http://PrintServerName/PrinterName/ and due to lack of sleep, I said, "Sure, go on and do it!". For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to undo this change. It seems to point to c:\winnt\web\printers but there never is or was a virtual directory configured in IIS to go there. There seems to be something behind the green curtain and the wizard is not showing himself... Can anyone help on this, I'm KB'ed out...     - Don't want security I have a machine running win2003 server IIS 6.0. It's within a intranet enviroment in the company. I use it to host a web application. The machine's name is "ABC", it's full name is: "ABC.company.com" The problem is when I access the website by type in "http://ABC/website", it's working fine without asking any password. But I access it from a machine which is not inside the company intranet by this way. But if I type in "http://ABC.company.com/website", it always asks you password which is very annoyed.     - PHP stopped working in IIS 5.0 I've had PHP 4.3.3 installed with IIS 5.0 for sometime now and everything was working just fine. But now for some reason it seems the server is not parsing the PHP. Just using simple scripts like an echo statement or the phpinfo(), they do not parse, and I'll I get in IE is a blank page. Although if I run the scripts in command line with php.exe, they execute. I've tried re-installing PHP and still no change. And I do have the php extension mapped to php.exe in the home directory tab to the server.     - Sharepoint Services on Win2003 - install error - 'System Error 1057 while trying to query service "SPTimer"' 'System Error 1057 while trying to query service "SPTimer"' Looking for some help on an install of Windows Sharepoint Services v.2 on a Windows 2003 Enterprise Server in an NT4 domain (no active directory). Also installed SQL Server 2000 Enterprise SP3a. Did the install of Sharepoint services from a run command, â??C:\program files\sts2setup_1033\setupsts.exeâ?? remotesql=yes. Install seemed to go ok. Sticking point is in attempting to Configure Administrative Virtual Server. Trying to create a new application pool and supply a configurable user name. After the install, I minimized this screen, created a new account for this purpose (only User not Admin, local account) (SQL Server and Sharepoint on same box). I then went into SQL Server Enterprise Manager, created a new Login under Security. Picked of the NT account I had just created and added the Server Roles - Security Administrators, Process Administrators, Database Creators. Maximized Configure Administrative Virtual Server screen again and tried to use account. Initially got time-out error. On all subsequent retries I get 'System Error 1057 while trying to query service "SPTimer"'. There is no SPTimer Service as an NT service. Have attempted giving that NT ID, Database Access permissions to Master as public and db-owner (matching administrators group). Also tried giving it same permissions to all database. Attempted making it a local administrator on server which would give it all Administrative roles in SQL server 2000.     - URL Redirection limitations. I've an ASP program that creates Web pages from a database depending on the query parameter. For example one user has the URL "www.mysite.com?user=joe" and another has the URL "www.mysite.com?user=jenny" Each goes to the Default.asp which creates the appropriate web page on-the-fly. This works fine but the users (being the users we know and love) want their own personalised domain names such as "www.joespage.com" and "www.jennypage.com" I know they can redirect their domain name to my site, but how can I translate it to the appropriate query string to get the right page returned.     - Incredible CPU overload with W2K3/IIS6 and ASP.net Hello, can't understand how works W2K3/II6 with ASP.net webpages. Here is my story : I work with a P4 2.4 GHz dedicated server with 1 GO RAM and 80 Go HD. Just to say that my system is OK to serve webpages. I began several weeks ago to notice that without no reason, my CPU was 100% overloaded. I see Windows Tasks Manager and notice an unknown W3WP.exe process taking all CPU. Now, my website is in production, and for no special reason, CPU goes to 100% during a minute or two. Probably the worker process that do something, but what ?! So I decide to reconfigure IIS isolation mode, and check "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode" checkbox. What's the change ? Always an overloading, but instead of w3wp.exe process, this is aspnet_wp.exe process that do the trip. EVEN WHEN I STOP ALL MY WEBSITES, aspnet_wp.exe process makes my CPU goes to 100% for several minutes after. What's this ?     - redirection? problem with IIS I've got a problem from users trying to browse my site. The server is on Windows 2000 with IIS 5.0. Some of the visitors appear to receive 'garbage' characters without any message (like "page cannot be displayed") in their browser when they try to enter to my site giving it's url. www.tostoixima.gr However when they try to enter giving the full url www.tostoixima.gr/index.htm they are getting in ok. This happends through various ISPs. Of course the default document is index.htm, altough i uploaded copies of it (index.html, default.htm and default.html) in case it would work with this. Last thing i thought was to try enter the site by telnet on port 80.. telnet www.tostoixima.gr 80 GET http://www.tostoixima.gr/ (double enter) response: GARBAGE!! even if I see the site correctly from my browswer When I try other directories i get the correct redirections/or pages. I have found an article that explains that there could be a problem with garbage responses after aplying a Security Rollup Patch. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;323756&Product=iis50 I've called my ISP and they responded that all patches are applyed and there is no problem from their part. I've got 3 questions: Is the garbage response right?? How do I fix that?? What does Internet Explorer do when he receives that garbage response? Over time my NT4.0 server has had a number of spammers installing long hierarchies of illegal filenames when setting up rogue HTTP and FTP sites. The files have been long removed, the security holes plugged and the directories renamed, but I have (almost) given up on trying to remove them. But now I *have* to (long story) so I need to try harder. There was a tool in the developer's kit (rm.exe??) which I tried once but couldn't figure out how to name the folders to whack them. Some employ reserved names (AUX, COM, LPT, etc) while others are made up of looooong strings using punctuation characters and variable repetitions of spaces so that it is extremely difficult to identify the names to pass them to a parameter driven tool. A nice simple GUI tool would (sigh) be great.....     - Thousands of default document calls. What is it.? I run IIS-4.0 on an NT 4.0 Server (SP6a) and analyse access logs using HitList 3.0. Been a great solution so far. But in the past two or three months there have been thousands of root page visits (typically about an extra 4000 to 5000 hits a month) where the default pages of certain sites are called up at 1 minute intervals for hours on end. This is obviously distorting the stats analysis quite badly to the point where much of the info becomes useless. I need to identify the culprit and either patch the server or block the router to kill these calls. No attempt is call executables or trojans, maybe it's a screwed up DOS attack from some damaged worm.? But looking at the server logs doesn't give any useful information. Lestways, I can't see it.     - CGI running problem... Hi, I wrote a CGI application and put it on my Windows XP personal web server. it works properly. But, when I put it on wondows 2003 server, the CGI application don't work. You can set this at the server, website or folder level.

You need to add .ivr to the MIME mappings table - you can do that using the
IIS MMC Snapin that is located in the Administration Tools folder.
