    - Can dotnet write to files outside of the web root? I'm running Dotnet on Windows 2003 and was wondering, can scripts write to files/folders outside of the webroot, for instance, in another drive? How about writing to a network share via UNC?     - Use frontpage to connect to IIS server SBS 2003 - over internet fa I used to be able to get frontpage to connect to my Small Business Server 2003 and publish web site changes over the internet. Now It no longer prompts me for my username and password and when I tell it to get the ceritficate it just hangs up. I reran the internet connection wizard and told the server to republish a new certificate but I think there is sonething else wrong. The website is fully functional and working but I cannot use Frontpage over the internet to connect and publish to it now. Does anyone have any idea what it is I should check.     - Failed Monitoring Problem Running Win2003 and Asp.Net Created first HttpHandler application that works without any problems. When I created a second one, get the following error: Access denied to 'C:\Inetpub\vhosts\website.com\httpdocs'. Failed to start monitoring file changes. Failed to start monitoring file changes.] All of the virtual directory and physical directory settings are the same between the two applications.     - IIS PWD Environment variable problem Hi I use a cgi-bin counter script written in Perl to provide graphical counters on my site. Part of this relies on writing to a private directory not accesible on the web server. The script was located at http://www.website.com/cgi-bin/counter.pl and it used to simply have the path to write in as "../private/xxx" under IIS on Windows 2000 advanced server this used to result in going down one directory from the webroot as the PWD environment variable was set to the webroot (not including the cgi-bin path segment). Now under Windows XP Proffesional IIS is setting the PWD environemtn variable to be the path including the cgi-bin directory. I am using Active Perl on both machines.     - Server not compatible error I get the following error message: "The server administration programs and the server extensions on the Web server are not compatible."     - Can't run Web apps I can't run my Web applications after doing a build/rebuild in VS.Net. Doesn't matter if I open it within VS or from a seperate browser. The default page just doesn't load. I can't run any other applications after canceling the action, and am forced to shut the power down manually. I've posted this in the vsnet and aspnet groups, but nobody has replied.     - SunJRE on XP cause IIS6 to give error 400 If I use the MSJVM on XP it can load a java applet that does a post with no problem. Same code using SunJVM and IIS6 returns error 400 and closes the socket while IIS5 has no problem with accepting post from applet regardless of JVM used. Remember...no code change.     - webservice permissions I have a client who is trying to deploy a webservice I wrote. The web service reads a file on a file server and delivers information about it. The file needs to be inaccessible to the user of the webservice because it is intellectual property. This sounds easy. Just give the IUsr account on the web server, a 2003 server running IIS6, read rights to the files on the file server. Since no HTTP path will get to the file server, the user can't steal the file. Unfortunately, the service returns the error Access to the path "\\FS1\Share\Designs\" is denied. The Everyone group has rights to the share as well as the Designs folder. But this happens. I suggested running the virtual directory under which the web service ran under a domain account, not the local IUSR. The client reported that the webservice page would not load at all under that configuration. What are we doing wrong?     - IIS web proxy Hello All, I want to publish my website from behind a firewall, how can I do that? Here is my setup. I have a small intranet which is configured as follows Router facing the internet configured with NAT so port redirect has been configured. IIS is installed on a SBS2K server behind the Router, there is an ISA firewall running on the SBS2K server. port 80 and 8080 is being used by ISA web proxy, so IIS sites are running on port 801. Now I redirect port 801 from router to the IIS to service one website on the SBS2K, works fine. Now I also have a separate development server on our intranet from which I want to publish a website. Since router can only publish websites from the IIS installed on the SBS2K, the only way I can think of publishing a website from the dev server is to use a web proxy somehow, like one provided in Apache webserver. i.e request comes to IIS of SBS2K which does a proxy for the IIS on the Dev Server and services the website. Is there a way to do that with IIS? if not is there an alternate solution without compromising the security of the network? I've looked at Kerio Server Firewall and I like their intrusion prevention and application hardening features. However the price tag looks to be a little high, at $600 + subscription fees.     - SMTP AUTH not happenning I have IIS 5.0 configured to send everything to a non-MS smarthost. Outbound Security is Basic Authentication w/user+pass over TLS. This has been working fine for 6 months, but stopped working the other day when the smarthost's root certificate expired. I deleted all traces that I could find of the old CA cert from the IIS machine, and installed the new one in the Local Machine \ TRCA branch. Now IIS will STARTTLS okay, but it never tries to send an AUTH command. The other side is offering LOGIN and PLAIN. The smarthost is working for other clients, just not IIS. What could be wrong?     - Log File Reports I have a Windows 2003 Standard Edition Server running IIS. I have enabled loging for my websites and it logs all site activity to daily files. All hosting companies, that I have seen, have an "Admin" section for thier users that shows them site statistics such as number of unique visitors, most popular page, etc.. .     - IIS Authentication Issue We have IIS 6 running on an Exchange 2003 server (Win2K3) with an extension called Public Folder Viewer. All users can access the website but when a topic is expanded and a link to a subject is clicked on a Windows authentication dialogue appears entitled "Connect to <NameOfExchangeServer>.company.com.au". If a user clicks on cancel they then see the resultant topic in the right pane of the web site and can download or view any linked documents in the topic. So the problem only occurs when they click on a link to a topic and it doesn't stop them from accessing the topic. Users accessing this site using IE 5.0 or 5.5 don't have this issue and users with IE 6.0 can avoid the issue if "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication" is turned off. I wouldn't have thought that it was a kerberos issue as the IIS server and Exchange server are the same box. Sharepoint Services have *not* been installed on this server, so that can't take the blame. Using adsutil.vbs to check the authentication method returns "The parameter "NTAuthenticationProviders" is not set at this node." Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug.     - Unable to have a FrontPage form e-mail results. I have created a new site and imported the original site in from another server. I am having a problem with the forms, I am unable to add an e-mail address for the results to be sent to. When I try to add the e-mail in FrontPage I recieve the following message: "This form cannot be configured to send results via e-mail. The Web site may be located at a disk-based location, or on a server that has not been configured to send email.     - IIS Out of Memory I have a website that uses ASP and VB6 SP5 DLLs. The DLL uses winsock APIs. About every two days, the lookups that I am doing stop working and I get an error message "out of memory". When this happens, I can still call the home page, enter lookup criteria, and attempt the lookup. The error comes from the DLL, and I cannot figure it out. I've made sure I am destroying all objects. Also when the lookups are not working, everything else works just fine on the website and computer memory is OK. Since I have tried everything with the DLL I know, I believe the problem to be with IIS. Can anyone offer suggestions of how to determine where to go to fix this or get more information?     - Hidden Form Fields expire Hi, Tried looking for similar problems, but cannot locate any previous posts.. I have a simple app that uses hidden form fields (userID,password) carried from page to page with a POST and retrieved on the next page and validated against a file. All works well, except that every so often, usually after the session is open for more than say 10 minutes, the hidden fields are cleared out and arrive with no value after a POST. This can get to a point where every second POST looses the data. Deleting Temporary Internet Files in IE6 can improve this, but it does come back eventually. https:// sessions seem to be more affected than http://. It started about mid 2004, I'm thinking some upgrade to the Win2000 Server (SP4)? Could this be some sort of security expiry "feature" that I can turn off on the Server?     - IUSER and Write Access Problem I am having an argument with someone right now about permissions and the anonymous IUSER. This person has insisted that I give the IUSER write permissions to a web site he is developing so that he can get his ASP code to work. I have compromised by creating a subdirectory for him. My ideal setup would be to have his ASP pages in the root of the web, and then have those pages use this sub-directory to create and write these temporary data files he needs. Instead of modifying his code he has simply moved all of his ASP pages into that subdirectory to run. I want to prove to my manager that this is bad and that our developer needs to secure his code. Anybody know of a good exploit I can demo? How can I write a file to this web site as if I were an anonymous user? I have a first front end IIS 6.0 server (87 web sites) and the nlb service configured, a domain controller for authentifications, and a file server used as an unc web share.     - Website logon window Server 2003, standard. I have installed the internet information service component that allows a website to be created and placed into the wwwroot file. My only problem is that all user's internal, external or logged onto the domain need to enter a username and password. The site is only available using the IP address and i don't mind occasional browsers. Is there a way to have it as an open site so anyone who enters the Ip address can see the homepage. Then from here i plan to use the NTFS security settings to allow access to differnet pages, with some pages open. I have managed to use this to disallow access to some users who have been dissallowed viewing of a page - they are presented with a login window and prompted for alternative credentials. to summarise, is there a way to configure my site so anyone can access the homepage without been required to logon. the place the site will be used most some how have blocked the login window from popping up giving me the unauthorised page straight away with no way to logon. all suggestions are welcome. The main file is the Index.htm that I made which links to difrrent grafs over swithces. This I have done on a Windwos 2003 server but I want to have a promt for login. I do not want it to be public for all ! Viewer must enter a user and password. Can I make a local account, perhaps and change rights for the folders ?     - Appropriate ports for 1 IP many SSL sites? I have multiple websites on IIS 6 that I want to have SSL. I discovered that I must use a separate SSL certificate for each website. I have only one IP so I'll have to use different ports for each website. If I go this route, then my question has to do with ports. I know 443 is the default so I won't use that one. I want to choose an appropriate port number for each SSL site. I found a site that lists all the ports at http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers but... What are appropriate ports to use?     - Certificate Authority Removed Hi all, I removed our win2k Pki root authority certificate server some time ago where root iis5.0 web server exists, now seeing crypto errors in W3svc root log for the old authority like it still exists but can not connect to it. Tried removing any old root server certificate store objects from AD with Ldp showing no results. It looks like iis5.0 metabase still referencing this old authority?. The root web has no/never had certificate selected for security, not sure where these repeated messages come from but it clogs the logs daily hourly and would like to clean it up or know why this has occurred. Anyone have a clue or idea? I have installed IIS 5.1 on my machine (WinXP SP2) without the documentation
initially. Now I need it, I've added it via Add/Remove Programs, and it
created a %SYSTEMROOT%\Help\iisHelp directory with all the help files in it.
I've created an iisHelp virtual directory which points there, but when I
open it in IE6, neither the tree-like documentation contents nor the index
do not work, the ActiveX's simply don't show up. Uninstalling IIS entirely
and installing it again didn't help. I've checked the permissions and it
seems like everything's fine... IIS Lockdown has been run once on this
system but undoing it doesn't change anything as well. The same for
performing a regsvr32 on hhctrl.ocx. Any ideas on how to make the contents
work?

Sorry, a brief look over the newsgroup revealed a thread with the same
problem as mine. The procedures outlined in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892675 did help. Sorry again, I know I
should have done this before actually sending a message here :)
