    - File Transfer with HTTPS Can I transfer files using HTTPS?? I'd like to use IE as a psuedo ftp client and be able to log on to a site like https://server.com, browse folders, and then view a standard graphic file in the browser.     - IIS disappears under XP Pro Until recently I was working with PWS under Win 98 but now run XP Pro SP1. I installed some webs I'm currently working on, went to change the default root web as per Help, and now not only is the server not running (http://localhost/ just times out) but when I double-click on the IIS entry in Administrative Tools I get a momentary hourglass then nothing. Task Manager reveals that MMC is running but there's no visual interface to work with. MMC still works fine with SQL Server Enterprise Manager. I tried reinstalling SP1 but this made no difference.     - Can requests for page parts be coerced to the same server I anticipate a problem that may occur when we deploy our reports on web farms. We have reports that generate both tabular and graphic output in a single Recordset pass. Each report page request writes a temporary graph GIF. Subsequently, another request for the GIF is issued due to an IMG tag on the report page: <IMG SRC="IMG.asp?graph123.gif"> IMG.asp responds with the GIF that was generated by the report page request. The problem I anticipate is that requests for GIF files may be directed to different servers on the web farm than the server on which the GIF is written, resulting in a "File not found" error from IMG.asp. It could be solved by having IMG.asp generate the GIF by reissuing the query but this would double SQL Server's workload. Using a network drive to store the GIF could also solve it but this is not an option because network share access will be disabled on the web farm for security reasons. Is this a problem? Does it depend on the type of web farm and/or web farm configuration? Is there a work around that can coerce requests for the graph GIFs back to the same server?     - Why is microsoft.com running on Linux? Sometime ago a friend of mine told me that www.microsoft.com was running on Linux and I also saw some articles on the net saying that, but I couldn't believe it until today when I saw it with my own eyes. I was told to go to www.netcraft.com and plug in microsoft.com on the search and oh boy they were right! Every server that I clicked in the results were showing that microsoft.com is running on Linux, so I did my research and the explanation that I saw was that the MS-DNS servers were terribly bugged down with the latest security flaws that they had to relay on Linux. What's going on here? Wasn't Microsoft supposed to be the best? I feel very disappointed to learn this. Does anyone know more details? So long.     - Cannot install IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Tools Hello: I downloaded IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Tools from Microsoft site and trying to install them on Windows Server 2003. The installation shows success, no error messages. However, nothing is installed. It should be in C:\Program Files\IIS Resources, but this folder is not created. If I create a folder (i.e. c:\IIS6RK) myself and do a custom installation into this folder, it stays empty. What could be a problem? I tried this on two computers.     - That whole ASP shutting off problem I've seen several posts about this, and was wondering if anyone has a solution yet: Hosted on a Windows 2003 server, ASP pages just stop loading, and don't produce any errors (the load status bar of the browser just slowly increases infinitely until you cancel the load). All html pages work fine, and the ASP service must be restarted (recycled) to get the ASP pages working again. This has been a pretty consistent problem with my website and two separate hosting companies. The current hosting company is telling me that they have no way to detect, trace, or log ASP errors, and that neither Windows 2003 server nor IIS 6 has any way to do so. How is that possible? Is the only way to track down a problem with ASP to look through every page's code line by line, and with the human eye predict what will cause an error? I'm not an expert programmer, but isn't this an absolutely outlandish claim? How can a hosting company claim that there is no way with the technology and software they're using to find any errors that lead up to ASP stopping? Or even any ASP error period, like an invalid object, or incorrect path? Anyway, any feedback on this would be most helpful. Recycling the ASP service is fine and all, but I'm trying to do things right and track down the actual cause, which I feel must be something about the ASP code.     - HELP!!! I don't have a clue as to what I could have done to my website. The site is still working but all of a sudden I can't open Internet Service Manager or SharePoint Adminstrator. Also, when I open the Front Page Management Counsel it just lock and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to end it. I'm using IIS 5.0 on Win 2000 with SE 2002.     - IIS and ASP.NET I just finished loading a new laptop running WinXP Pro. I installed IIS, got every update available, including all the .NET Framework updates. I loaded MS Visual Studio.NET 2003. I bring up Studio.NET and try to create an ASP.NET web application and get a message that "the specified web server is not running ASP.NET version 1.1" even though I can clearly see that version 1.1 of the framework is installed.     - How to reserve a port a boot up? I have an IIS5.0 machine. A single IP is doing many instances of SSL, and all use different ports... https://site1.com https://site2.com:1143 https://site3.com:1148 Whenever I boot, a "services" process seems to take one of my ports, causing a 115 error. What I would like to do is keep these ports from being used _before_ IIS has a chance to get going. Can I just add some junk in system32 \drivers\etc\services to "account" for that port being used?     - ISAPI filter question - data pointer validity Hi all I've got a question on ISAPI filter development. I'm developing a filter, that registers for being notified of SF_NOTIFY_SEND_RAW_DATA event, and messes around with the IIS data being passed in HTTP_FILTER_RAW_DATA structure. My question is: for how long does the data pointed by 'pvInData' pointer stay valid? Is it still valid in SF_NOTIFY_END_OF_REQUEST, or does it invalidate just after sending the data to client? So far, I've found nothing on this matter either in MSDN or Platform SDK docs. Will be grateful for any piece of information.     - cgi-bin Permisions When I try to execute a .exe in my cgi-bin directory, I am told that I do not have permission, even if I am logged on as the Administrator. I have tried enabling all options such as execute permissions and write access, but with no luck. The file is a compiled C++ program, and is being called by a POST method in my web page.     - IIS 6 help! - Cant authentication to Virtual Dir on another machine Hi ladies and gents I'm having problems getting authenticated to a Virtual Directory on my IIS6 machine that is pointing to a resource on another server. Basically I have a test site - "http://jedi/" On this test site, I have created the virtual dir "http://jedi/test" which points to a shared directory on another server n the same domain. The "Share Permissions" and the "NTFS Permissions" on the target share are set to "EVERYONE - Full Control" The virtual directory "jedi/test" is configured in IIS to allow integrated and plain text authentication, (thought it doesnt matter what I set this to) also the setting "always use the authenticated users credentials when validating access to the nework directory" is enabled behind the "Connect As" button on the Virtual directory tab. Still whenever I try to access this resource from a browser, I always get the Username and Password prompt!. Still IIS just returns the error 403.1 - "You are not authorized to view this page" "You do not have permission to view this directory or page due to the access control list (ACL) that is configured for this resource on the Web server" I know its not an ACL problem on the target share on the target server, becuase NTFS and Share both have 'EVERYONE - FC' permissions, I have also checked to see that I can get to target share to which the virtual directory refers, by typing the share name directly from my computer.     - Connection Pooling I am using a third party NON Microsoft ODBC driver that is ODBC 2.51 Compliant. I am using a utility supplied with this third party client software to monitor active connections. When using ASP the active connection (to the third party service) persists for 60 seconds after Connection Close and Set Connection = Nothing. The driver (or it's server service ) itself does not "actively" support connection pooling and cannot be configured to do so. In essence it is a passive partner in such scenarios i.e. it will allow a pooled connection by another application to persist - timeouts etc are all handled by the controlling application. I have tried to stop this "persistence" by setting the CPTimeout (specific to the driver) to zero as well as to not pooled in \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\driver-name\CPTimeout In addition I also set StartConnectionPool to zero in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\ASP \Parameters to ensure pooling was disabled. An ASP Connection to the third party client produces the following Connection property result 89 OLE DB Services -7 This indicates pooling is not enabled. Finally, a VB connection to this client driver, performing the same kind of Open + Close program, cleans up with virtually no delay. I'm using Windows 2000 SP4, IE 5.0. Any ideas?     - IIS 5.0 Sites Gone We just upgraded our server to Win 2000 and ISS to 5.0. We have four websites running on our server all with different IP addresses. The sites were working fine. This morning we had to change some permissions for another program, the sites appear in the IIS console, then we have to reboot the server and all the sites are gone. We get an error message that said IIS couldn't connect to the default site. We checked the services and they are all up and running. Any thoughts on what we should check?     - Intermittent error "111: Server refused connection" After months of operation, I've, since a week had problems with my website. It will seem to function well, but sometimes, not always, after a couple of hours of uptime everyone trying to connect will start to get the following error message: "ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While trying to retrieve the URL: http://<My URL removed for security reasons>/ The following error was encountered: Connection Failed The system returned: (111) Connection refusedThe remote host or network may be down. Please try the request again. Your cache administrator is root. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------" The server isn't at all down - it just refuses connection. Norton shows there's been intrusion attempts, but then again Norton ALWAYS shows intrusion attempts, and always has. The site has no hardware firewall, only a software firewall (Norton Internet Security), which has been used and configured the same the whole time (including before I started having problems). Restarting the machine fixes the problem. I've tried first to check settings, which seem the same as they've always been, then I did a SFC /scannow which didn't help, and finally I tried a repair install, which didn't fix the problem either.     - Host headers and integrated windows authentication problems Hi, here's the problem. It's fairly long......and it is seriously starting to annoy me too! :-) IIS5 - Windows 2000 Server I've created a new website called Systems Team. It's running on port 80, same port as the default site, so I've given it a host header of systems.test.co.uk. The bit after systems is our domain name. I've created a DNS entry in our test.co.uk zone called Systems pointing to the IP of the server. No problems so far. All website access is fine using a URL of http://systems.test.co.uk. Now, when I restrict permissions on the folder that the website maps to it all goes pear shaped. I have permissions set so that only Domain Admins have rights to the folder. The website is configured for Integrated Authentication and Basic Authentication. Basic is so that we can access it if we're not logged into a PC as ourselves. Now when I go to systems.test.co.uk, I get prompted for a username and password. If I enter my details which I'm already logged on with, I get in fine. So for some reason, the integrated authentication isn't working. Now if I remove this new site, add a Virtual Directory under the default site, so I just reference the site by http://servername/systems I get in with no problems.     - IIS and Other Services Problems - XP Pro All, (Stand-Alone Laptop XP Pro, developers machine- my apologies for all non-Microsoft references) This started when I attemped to configure IIS to run PHP - after the PHP page failed, I couldn't read ASP or ASPX either, (TomCat and JSP still work) and gradually discovered that IIS was fried (it wouldn't even open). I have also noticed various messages of errors regading WMI, RPC, the Event Log and dependencies. I tried a few system restores, and re-installing IIS. The best I can get is IIS to show the default web service as stopped, but it will not start. IIS shows no dependencies in the services box, when it should show RPC and Security Accounts.......I cannot read the Event log, it shows "interface not available". I can provide more detail, but I'm hoping this is some permissions issue and/or registry tweak. I have checked for viruses, doesn't appear to be a problem........I don't want to mess with anything else, since the machine appears to be mostly functional but I would scream if I have to use the recovery disk and spend 3 days re-installing - Any help MUCH appreciated.     - Default Web Site stopped. I can't get my default site going om W2K Pro iis5. I can ping local host, and all the LAN check boxes are empty. In iis, the tree shows Default Website stopped, and the personal Web manager window says default.htm is off. If I try to start it, there is a delay and then a message "service did not respond to the start in a timely fashion". This might be the same problem as in my posting Oct 17, 3.22 am (iis5 starter) where the thread died because of a misunderstanding. Any leads greatly appreciated. Mike. HTTP 401.2 - Unauthorized: Logon failed due to server configuration Internet Information Services Technical Information (for support personnel) Background: This is usually caused by a server-side script not sending the proper WWW-Authenticate header field. Using Active Server Pages scripting this is done by using the AddHeader method of the Response object to request that the client use a certain authentication method to access the resource. The same works fine when i give http://machinename (i.e the webserver name). I have "Integrated Windows Authentication" as the authentication type. Can any one throw some light on this.     - Reproduce IIS Snap-in behavior Hi We have developed an SMTP event sink for IIS. During deinstallation, the dll can not be removed because it is loaded by the iisadmin service. Stopping the virtual server with the IIS snap in solves the problem, the dll is unloaded OK. What we need is to do the same programmatically. The tools provided to work with the metabase are of no use. When you send a command to stop a virtual server (either with IISABO, ADSI or WMI) the server almost inmediately stops and sets its state to stopped, but it still has threads processing what is left in the internal queue, thus our dll is still loaded. The IIS snap-in also sends the command to stop the server which also stops inmediately, but after the server is stopped, the snap-in knows how to wait for all virtual server threads to finish.     - IIS 5.0 ASP Out of memory Helllpppp We have an IIS 5.0 installation using ASP 3.0 pages. We connect to Oracle database 8.1.7. About 150 users For the past 3 days system has been working fine. Now all of a sudden IIS is logging the message into Win 2000 event log "ASP 0100 Out of memory. Unable to allocate required memory.." The ASP service also restarts after this happens a few times. This causes other parts of the application to behave erratically. Has anyone encountered this problem before ???     - problems with .LNK files in IIS6 Hi all I have a directory on my web server where I have placed some shorcuts (.lnk files). I can see the .lnk files listed with my browser when I connect to the directory in question. but the web server always returns "404 file not found" whenever I click on one of them Any other file in this directory is fine for example. 'test.txt' works ok but 'test.lnk' doesnt - i just get 404, but the file is there, and the permissions are ok. I think its something to do with the file extension ".lnk" - can anyone help me with this.     - IE, sockets and IIS I'm seeing some strange behaviour with a website I'm building and I want to understand why this is occurring. Some background: First, I'm testing on a win2kpro so I'm limited to 10 connections. The site uses a lot of frames and almost every frame has images. I'm running an MSwast stress test for another website from the same machine. Now, sometimes when I browse the site with IE I get the "page unavailable" error in some frames and some images don't show up. After a refresh they appear again. This only started this morning so I'm thinking that it's because of mswast. When I look with netstat I'm seeing a lot of socket connections so I'm wondering if IE is unable to create anymore socket connections to IIS. And that's what I want to know. How does IE(6) handle frames and images at the low level? Does it create a socket for every frame and image? what happens if IIS can't create anymore sockets?     - IIS6 on w2k3 suddenly stops for a few seconds Hi! We have a w2k3 (web edition) on a web server. When the number of connections reaches a bit over 400 all network traffic through iis stops. The visitors get this message: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. The httperr-logs does not report anything about a recycle. We have tried to shut down "enable pinging" under "application pool->health". We have also shut down "enable rapid-fail protection" but neither gave any difference. We tried to run the iis6 as iis5 by enable that feature. But with the same result. The big question is why! We have changed switch, network card and such. The same machine has been running with windows 2000 without any problems for a long time, so I dont believe its any hardware problems. We are running other web servers on windows 2000 with iis5 that holds over 1800 connections without any problems. My connection string is: "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=x;Initial Catalog=x; User ID=x; Password=x;Network Library=dbmssocn;" It seems that it has to do with the number of connections but I am not sure. But directly after the "iis network" has died everything works for a few minutes until we have around 400 connections and then it dies again. We tried to have a ping-script running while testing and we can still ping the sql-server and all other things in our network but the iis6 (asp-pages) cannot connect to the sql-server.     - Why are .js files processed and altered in IIS? Hi, I'm developing an ordinary website for my client. So far so good. On every page one or more .js-files is included (client side), everything works just fine on my server as well as on the clients until a few weeks ago. But on my clients server some text (company specific informations, looks a bit like a page footer or something) is added to the end of every single .js-file. They look good if I download them through FTP, but for some reason they are being changed when I download them through a browser. My client, of course, knows nothing about how this happened. Everything was working fine on their server until a few weeks ago, when they installed some service packs on the server. Since then some application obviously processes the .js-files when they are called through the IIS. I doubt it has anything to do with the service packs, but my client is not aware of having done any other changes to the server. I checked the web server configuration on their server (Application configurations -> App mappings), there are no mappings for the .js extension there. Where else can I look for info about this, find out what happens to the .js-files and why? I have 2 websites on the same machine SSL.MyMachine.com Normal.MyMachine.com I want the guy who hits SSL.MyMachine.com to only be able to use port 443 and never port 80 I want the guy who hits Normal.MyMachine.com to only be able to use port 80 and never port 443. That is because I do not want some guy going to https:/SSL.MyMachine.com/data on port 443 then changing the URL to https:/Normal.MyMachine.com/data because that is a whole different web site.     - Broke Web Management of Printers OK, this worked before I stayed up too late and did something stupid: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/defaul t.asp? url=/windows2000/en/server/help/sag_PRINTconcepts_19.htm I was changing some defaults in IIS and it prompted me (warned) to see if I wanted to change some specifics (default document name I believe I was changing) regarding a number of http://PrintServerName/PrinterName/ and due to lack of sleep, I said, "Sure, go on and do it!". For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to undo this change. It seems to point to c:\winnt\web\printers but there never is or was a virtual directory configured in IIS to go there. There seems to be something behind the green curtain and the wizard is not showing himself... Can anyone help on this, I'm KB'ed out...     - Don't want security I have a machine running win2003 server IIS 6.0. It's within a intranet enviroment in the company. I use it to host a web application. The machine's name is "ABC", it's full name is: "ABC.company.com" The problem is when I access the website by type in "http://ABC/website", it's working fine without asking any password. But I access it from a machine which is not inside the company intranet by this way. But if I type in "http://ABC.company.com/website", it always asks you password which is very annoyed. I would like some advice with the following. We're planning to have two standalone win2k or Win2k3 servers running IIS: one production server and the other for DR purposes. Webe content is failry static. The two servers are at different sites and the only way they can talk to each other is via the internet. What I'd like to do is have a automated scheduled replication of web content that has changed on the Production server to the DR server done over the internet securely. Can I use the File Replication Service (FRS) to do this? Will it be secure (I'm trying to use as little else as possible, such as IPSec VPN).

Would appreciate your comments.
