I have a few development machines in a workgroup (I'm a .net aspx developer)
and I often browse websites on the machines from othe machines. they are
all win xp except my new one is xp Media Center. I can't browse web sites
on this new machine. I have iis 5.1 installed and annonymous access is
check in directory security. I can't even browse websites on this machine
i.e. //localhost/mysite/mainmenu.aspx.

What did I forget to do?

Tell us what "can't browse" actually means. :)

How about error messages, expected and actual results, etc.?

After you installed IIS, did you install .NET Framework?

What is happening when you try to browse localhost? (we start by fixing
localhost, so no networking issue is involved)

Thanks!

sorry, I can browse localhost just fine. Browsing on other machines in the
workgroup, gets not found. I can ping this machine, and Windows explorer
sees it just fine from other machines.

Do you have a firewall installed and enabled on this machine? Maybe
Windows XP's firewall is enabled?

oh, of course. It was the stupid Windows firewall. Thanks. I should have
known that.

I have a similar problem.
Dell laptop running MCE 2005 and IIS 5.1 installed, then the .net framework.
3rd party (McAfee) Virus/Spam/Firewall is off. Microsoft Firewall is off.
Browsing localhost NEVER returns anything. Not .aspx, not .asp not even
.html.

What gives? It feels like something is turned off, but the Windows firewall
is OFF.
Anyone got any ideas? I need to develop on this machine. I have Win XP Pro
at work and IIS works fine there.
