IIS6 and .Net Framework.
I just installed Windows server 2003 and applied all
updates using Windows update. I currently also have a
Win2k server which currently host my website and aspx
application. I am trying to move all that to my new 2003
server. I started IIS. I copied all my files from old
server to knew on. I setup new website in IIS. I can
browse all html pages fine.. but I can not load any aspx
pages. I have checked permissions and don't think it is
that. I feel like it has something to do with the .net
framework be configured right.. but not sure and don't
know how to configure. I noticed that framework 1.1 has
a configuration utility that I have not seen. Also, when
I go into the properties of the website in IIS and click
on the configuration button then look at Application
extension, there is no .net extension listed like in my
older server. Anyone have any ideas? Tag: attachments are deleted Tag: 323378
Problems to see "Default Web Site" with a user who's not "Local administrtator"...
Hi,
I had install IIS 5.1. If I work with a user who's "local administrator" I
see the "Default Web Site" in IIS console and I can modify properties.
I create a second user with the "read, write and execute" privileges in the
wwwroot. But It was not a "local administrator". But it's an Operator of the
Web Site and it's in the "administrator group" who can create en manage web
site . When I log a session with this user, I can't see the "Default Web
Site" in IIS?!?!?
With the same config in Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0, I can see the "Default Web
Site" with my user without "local administrator" privilege.
Do you know the difference between these two different setup and why I have
a problems in Windows XP? The security rules had change in Windows XP versus
2000?
Thanks!

IIState Analysis
I'm currently running IIS 4 on a Windows NT 4. 0 Server

intermitantly with a Dr. Watson error "C0000005 Access

the server and the MS knowledgebase for an answer, I was
no further forward.
Whilst checking the newsgroups I came across references to
IISTATE which I have downloaded and installed. However
although I have read the documentation I'm need some help
interpreting the output file that has been generated.
Rather than including the log file in the post, if you can
help me out let me know your email address and I will

AOL Dialup Error accessing IIS 6.0 site
Hi
I'm relatively new to IIS. I currently have several sites running on a W2003 IIS6 LB cluster, and most IE and Netscape browsers are able to access without problem. I have received a couple of troublecalls from AOL dialup users getting "PWC ERROR CONNECTION RESET BY CONTEXT SERVER". I searched the MS knowledge base, but came up empty. Anyone seen this error before? Why would their connection be reset if they have an active connection

Order of Logged Options
I'm currently using AWStats (www.awstats.org) to analyze our logs and
report. We recently upgraded to Windows Server 2003 (and obviously IIS6) and
I noticed that while the same logging options are selected, the order of
those options has changed! In fact, it doesn't even match the order of
columns shown in the W3C log properties.
What has this changed? Is there some way I can change the order, perhaps by
modifying the metabase or hacking the registry? It's important that this
gets changed because AWStats expects a certain order and, unfortunately,
doesn't include a custom format option for the cs-method logging option (at
least by itself, since it has moved positions).

IIS 6.0 and browsing directories containing logfiles
In an application there is used log4net to trace several

IIS 6.0 seems to prevent anyone from browsing or

How do you.. ?
I've been tasked with modifying our company's web site (just simple
changes).
I've got ftp access so I can just download the file, modify it and then
upload it.
As I am a beginner, I was wondering how the pros would achieve the
following:
Download all the files which make up the web site (which is easily done).
The challenge is, how would I go about setting up the site LOCALLY so that I
can make changes and view them without interfering with the LIVE version
until I am ready to upload the changed files again. The 'local' site should
behave like the 'live' site as much as possible.
I have viewed the source to a few of the HTML files and it looks like it
refers to external web links and data quite a bit.
What software, tools do the pros use and how do they go about simulating and
testing a production site before uploading it for public use? Tag: attachments are deleted Tag: 323336

way to forward requests to another IIS server?
I have a case where I would like to forward requests sent to a specific virtual directory to another web server. How can I do this
Specifically we have one server running IIS outside the firewall which will receive requests. We would like this machine to send the requests to another server inside the firewall. This 2nd server will have a virtual directory in IIS that will be a web application. We want the first server to have a virtual directory of its own, and when it receives a request, it forwards them to the 2nd server inside the firewall

Win2K/IIS 100% CPU utilisation requires reboot
Folks,
I have a Win2K server running IIS with all SPs and Windows updates. The
server is not under any significant load and is mainly used for local file
and print sharing for about 6 users, plus it runs a simple Intranet and a
perl script that provides a web-fronted test engine for online exams.
The server runs fine except that perhaps 3-4 times a month the inetsrv
process will shoot to 100%, file and print sharing services stall and the
only way to calm it down is to reboot the server. This generally happens
when someone's running the perl script to do a test or do some test admin.
I have done some basic research on this and spent a small amount of time to
try and identify the root cause of the problem but as an interim measure, I
moved the script to a Linux server running Apache where it's run fine for 3
months with no downtime and no problems.
Since the Linux server is 'doing the job' fine I've not spent much time
'fixing' the Win2K server but I'd be interested in knowing whether anyone
has any specific advice that might result in a near-instant fix!? Trouble
is, since the testing engine's stable where it is, there's no incentive to
spend any significant time debugging the Win2K side of things at any
significant level.
Any takers?
Thanks

IIS and Frontpage
I have a 2k server with IIS 6.0 and 2002 FP server

web. We can edit the main site fine with no issues, but
editing the subweb site causes problems. We are using
Frontpage (problem occurs with FP 2000 and 2002). The
page looks fine, until you open it in Frontpage. It then
changes structure (it breaks the page up into frames,
removes the heading, etc). You don't even have to save
the page; just openning it screws it all up. I tried
removing IIS -- no help. ANY IDEAS?? Tag: attachments are deleted Tag: 323262
What is restarting inetinfo.exe?
I are upgrading from IIS 4.0 under NT to IIS 5.1 under WIN2K. In the 4.0 world one of our own services detected if inetinfo.exe died and restarted it. After a fresh install of WIN2K and IIS 5.1 I notice that if inetinfo.exe dies it is restarted by the system
At least it does on most of our development machines. My problem is that this behaviour has gone away on several developers boxes. I presume that our software is doing something to modify the default WIN2K behaviour. The WWW Publishing Services Properties/Recovery tab is set to "Take No Action" on all failures
Can anybody suggest where else I can look for for settings that control this behaviour

Multiple sites sharing single web.config file
Hello
I would like to have several sites share a single web.config file. To accomplish this, I would point the root of these sites to the same folder. Is there any reason why I might not want to do this? (IIS 5 or 6
In case you're wondering why I would do this, we have many web sites on a single server, and there are groups of sites that need to share common configuration information. I'd like to ease some administration by having one web.config file for each of these "site groupings". There may be many "site groupings", so I cannot use the machine.config file
An interesting side question: assuming that I do the above, is it ok to have several web applications sharing a single bin folder? If that is an OK solution, then I just might be able to avoid using the gac, any thoughts on that

alternative to FPSE for publishing on IIS5 server
We host hundreds of websites on IIS5 and have used FrontPage to update
content, FPSE 2000. Problem is, many of our sites use integrated Word
documents, and Word always asked Internet users for a name/password when
viewing the linked Word files. Uninstalling FPSE on any site makes the
prompt go away. It looks like Word is trying to author files on our server,
and asks surfers for credentials.
Any good alternatives to using FPSE on a Windows server? We spend a lot of
time updating the content for some of these sites, so we're hoping for some
options that are convenient and generally available without VPN access. I am
guessing we can't train FPSE to work only for asp and htm files.

I am having a minor problem trying to share a users home directory on IIS

I am running an intranet (IIS 6) with an ssl. My goals is to be able to

virtual directory which maps the UNC for the individual share. I also set
the permission on the virtual directory for Read and Write access. I also
checked the permissions on the share on the file server to be sure that
these are set to full control for the use that is connecting to the folder.
The users can log in and see their files but not paste any new files into

But now I have set my Win 2K Domain password policy to expire password

So when 30 days are up, my users account is now set to "User must

We use an ISAPI filter that forces single-signon for

authentication will fail on the unsecured directory, but

iis4.0 index server cataolog and office xp documents
Good afternoon, this may be a stupid question, but I have not been
able to find information on the MS site.
We are currently running a mixed environment, where more and more
clients are being installed Windows XP (office XP). our intranet
server is currently running IIS 4.0. It seems that Office XP
documents posted to our intranet cause the index server to have
problems when developing the catalog. Once the files are marked to be
indexed - CPU usage spikes and the files are never released. Even our
Admin accounts cannot access the files without a "access denied - file
in use" error. The only solution so far has been to stop IS,
remove/delete the file etc.
Has anyone run into this problem? - is it a compatability issue? can
we update the particular dll for office documents?

Why do COM objects close under IIS6?
I have several ISAPI scripts that make calls to COM objects. Under

open until the IIS service is restarted. Under IIS6 these COM objects

In my case, the COM objects cause some hefty database I/O each time

SMTP virtual server only works for a few minutes! - help please!
Equipment:
Smart host server - Windows 2000 server SP4, IIS 5.0, OWA, GFI's
MailEssentials/Security
I have set up an IIS SMTP virtual server/smart host on my Cisco PIX
DMZ. This computer relays email to another server which runs Exchange
5.5. On the IIS server (a smart host server), I am running GFI's
MailEssentials and MailSecurity - anti-spam/virus software.
Everything has worked perfectly up until yesterday night.
The problem is that the IIS Virtual server stopped "accepting" or
"sending" inbound/outbound email.
The smart host will process (send/receive) email for a short time if I
do the following:
- Stop the default SMTP virtual server but this consistently locks up
IIS manager
- reboot server (the only apparent option)
- open up IIS manager and start the default virtual server again
- after a few minutes it begins to send/receive email
- this process always *stops* again after about 10 minutes.
Actually, a simple re-boot also does the same as above.
Important considerations:
- The above process is consistently repeatable;
- There are no unusual errors in the event logs;
- This is not a hd space issue (plenty of space);
- the exchange server is not faulty;
- OWA still works (but email is obviously not up to date) from remote
sites;
- CPU activitity is normal;
- Absolutely no changes were made to this server in the past 2 months.
Questions:
Why did this suddenly happen after working so well and with no changes
to the server?
Why is IIS manager consistantly locking up everytime I attempt to stop
a service?
Why does it only work for a few minutes after a reboot?
How do I fix this problem?
Thank you.
