    - Socket connect slow on multihomed box, only w/i IIS This is a cross-post from the .NET group since it looks like it may not be .NET. New information since the original post is that is the wireless network is enabled and connected the socket connect time is 4x longer! Disable wireless and it is back down to just very slow. Any ideas are appreciated. ----- I have an ASP.NET app that has very slow connect times using TCPClient, or the Socket class, or even calling a COM object that uses C socket calls on certain similar XP SP2 boxes. On those boxes, if another connection is made within a couple seconds, it is fast. Running the same C# code in a console app connects instantly. Unplugging the network cable allows localhost connections to be instant (?!). Running the same ASP.NET app on W2K or another XP Pro SP2 box is instant, so it comes down to being ASP.NET on XP Pro on certain boxes. I've includes the test results and programs. The boxes with the problems are laptops. Is it an ASP.NET config issue? XP SP2 Security issue? Any ideas/help is greatly appreciated.     - SSL Certificate Problem I have recently upgraded a NT4 Server to Windows 2003 IIS 6. I had a web site which was secured with SSL. Now however, when I try accessing the site I get a 'Page cannot be displayed' error. I tested the site by unticking the 'Requires Secure Channel' and I am able to access the site without SSL.     - Enumerate all Websites on IIS I am looking for (preferably C# but at this point i am not very picky since hours of google and google group scouring has turned up nothing) for sample code on enumerating all of the websites in IIS. I am leaning towards ADSI as this has the possibility of working on more platforms however as I have seen code that works on IIS 5.1 crashes on 2k3 but I am hoping for a more "cross-platformable" code via the ADSI provider. I currently have DirectoryEntry W3SVC = new DirectoryEntry("IIS://localhost/w3svc"); - Now to my way of thinking everything under w3svc will be the websites. And this would be exposed via the Children however the Children exposes only one method of access a "Find" method which would be cool if our code was psychic and already knew all of the website id's. Meanwhile back in the real world! We are left looking for a method that plain and simply enumerates the websites.     - Scanning remote pc's w/ MBSA & SUS... Hi, I'm trying to implement MBSA and SUS into my current environment. Here are my issues that are causing problem. What I'm trying to do is scan remote computers w/ MBSA and update them w/ approved updates through SUS. What is making this hard is that the computers are behind a router. So they don't get individual ip address. I normally access a specific computer w/ port forwarding. So what I'm wondering is if I'm able to scan those computers w/ MBSA and how? Normally MBSA uses ports 139 & 445, but because I'm using port forwarding, how can I scan each individual computer and get a report back? And after I get that figured out, then I'm going to tackle integrating SUS with MBSA as well. But I figured that I'd just get MBSA working first...but using SUS in conjunction is the overall goal.     - Virtual Directory on a UNC I'm trying to setup a virtual directory located on another server using a UNC path. Web Server is Windows 2000 (IIS 5) in a Domain. Other Server is a IOmega NAS (Windows 2000). For licensing and cost reasons, I wish this server not to be part of the domain. I am using a user named COMUser for credentials using the connection. COMuser is a user in the domain. It's also a local user on the NAS. They both have the same password. Directory Security for this directory is set with Basic Authentication. I tried also with Anonymous access, setting the COMUser as the account used for anonymous access. I made sure the share and the local directory security on the NAS are letting COMUser have correct access. I am unable to access the directory content when browsing this virtual directory. I know it can be done when the NAS in part of the domain (I made it work this way), but I can't make it work out of the domain. Can anybody see what could be wrong with this setup? Thanks!     - Puzzled at this Virtual Directory Error.... I just upgraded to XPSP2 Pro and ran into a problem that didn't exist with W2K/II5. I have my project in an "encrypted drive" which I mount after starting Windows. Now, however, IIS5.1 puts a red "ERROR" symbol next to the virtual directory with the status column of "The system cannot find the path specified." If I right click on the virtual directory and select Explore or Open, it takes me to that folder (as it should) . However, when selecting the Browse, I get "the page cannot be found" error. If I copy my project and put it on my hard drive outside of the mounted drive and remap the virtual drive for the new location, the red error symbol goes away and the error page does not occur when Browsing. Does anyone have a clue as to what XP might me doing? Is this a "security feature" in XP?     - IIS slow to launch asp.net site after inactivity I have a Windows 2003 server with .NET 1.1 sp1 installed. I have a web application that runs pre-compiled DLLs (these are aspx pages with the code-behinds in VB.NET DLLS). If I recompile a DLL, there's about a 10 -20 second delay opening the website. Then it serves up pages almost instaneously, as it should. But if I don't visit the site for 20 minutes, then go back, the delay occurs again. I've done some research, and I think this is because the application pool the web app resides in has to launch a new w3wp.exe process every 20 minutes. I looked at the application pool properties, and I have 2 settings set as 20 minutes: Recycle worker process: 20 minutes Idle Timeout: Shutdown worker processes after being idle for 20 minutes. Can I just increase the idle timeout to 1440 minutes (1 day)? Will that solve the problem, assuming someone visits the site once a day to keep the w3wp process running so it doesn't shutdown for an idle timeout. Is there a better way, or does dot net just suck?     - SMTP Server Hiya all, I'm trying to create an SMTP server relay in IIS 6.0 so that I can us PHP's 'mail()' (http://www.php.net/mail) function. I want all mail t me sent to a different SMTP server for handling. I have an SMTP serve on paid host which requires authentication. The problem is that with the php.ini file there is a setting for th SMTP server address and port, but none for authentication. I understan that SMTP server with in IIS can authenticate based on IP address. So how can I set up an SMTP Virtual Server in IIS 6.0 to route al email generated by PHP to my paid hosting which require authentication? I've searched all over and cannot find a guide that works. I also hav not enabled port routing with in Routing & Remote Access, does the por needed to be forwarded to 127.0.0.1 for SMTP to work? I have a web server at my company for OWA and a company website: https://mailhost.domain.net/exchange LAN i.p. address 10.0.0.11 https://investors.domain.com LAN i.p. address 10.0.0.8 They both need to use SSL and my boss wants the investors website to use port 443 and the OWA to use 444, now both websites worked fine the other way round but he wants investors to use the website without using :444 at the end. I have created a no-ip account, and set up my website details in IIS, but when I type in my http://example.hopto.com address, it takes me to my DLink modem config address? The modem is a DLink DSL-302G, and with a USB connection, uses http://10.1.1.2 for configuration. By going to my no-ip.com site, it redirects me to http://10.1.1.2 and prompts me for my modem password etc? How can I get around this, is there a setting in IIS to change this. In IIS, i have changed my website IP address to both (All Unassigned), and a specific IP but both don't work. Even when i type in http://my-ip-address it sends me to my modem, how do i get around this? I don't want my modem to be the default address, i want it to go to my website.     - IIS Admin error 126 "The specified module could not be found" - re-register MSXML30 I saw a couple references to this error on Google, but none had the solution that I finally found, so for future reference... SBS 2003 Premium running IIS6. After a reboot, the following message appears repeatedly in Event Log: The IIS Admin Service service terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found. Unfortunately, no module was specified. I was thinking metabase corruption (though I'm not even sure what that is), so eventually I decided that I needed to use Backup Exec to do restore the system state. That restore failed with _lots_ of VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) errors in Event Log, the most telling of which was: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {f5078f32-c551-11d3-89b9-0000f81fe221} and Name MSXML30 is [0x80040154]. A search for "MSXML30 not registered" led me to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=322174, which doesn't really describe my problem, but DOES provide simple instructions for re-registering MSXML30 (msxml3.dll). Once I re-registered msxml3.dll, IIS Admin started itself and dependent services (like the web server) could be started. This took hours to track down. Please Microsoft, when a service fails because "the specified module could not be found," specify the module! And prevent de-registering system-critical DLLs, or automatically re-register them. I have three sites that are working perfectly. I just added a forth, and as far as I can see, it's configured the same as the other 3 (which are working fine, btw), but when I try to get to it, I receive a 'You are not authorized to view this page" message. I know that i'm getting in, because initially (before I set up the new site) I was getting my default site when I went to that URL.     - How do I configure Windows systems to use Proxy server? Hello. I have a third party proxy server (Symantec Web Security) running on Windows 2000 in place that effectively stops surfing to inappropriate sites for my users who total 70+. The problem we have occurs when the laptop users leave our network and try using a different network, they are directed to our internal proxy server resulting in them not being able to access the web. Currently, I have a group policy that manages the proxy settings in IE6 in our all Win XP environment on all the desktops and GP also prohibits them changing the settings. Obviously, this solution will not work: 1. If they download another browser and use it instead. 2. If the laptop users cannot surf the web remotely, I cannot control their surfing locally with this solution. I was hoping that I could force all web traffic to go through the proxy server in much the same manner as DNS requests are routed to the correct server for that traffic when users are logged on to our network but allow them to use whatever method when they use other networks. This is part of the FAQ saying that to make IIS work I will need to reconfigure my IIS to allow .lic files to be served. I tried to download this file with my browser and it cannot be accessed.     - IIS only displaying pages internally despite massive troubleshooting. Any help appreciated? Have IIS running on a fully-patched Windows 2000 server with a DSL connection. The server had been successfully running a website up until a week ago when it only became browseable internally and times out for anyone in the outside world. Have checked DNS, done pings, tracerts, nslookup, routing info, checked permissions and everything checks out just fine. I have tried it with both the virus protection and firewall completely disabled (essentially wide-open to the world) and it is still not browseable by outsiders. The site itself runs just fine internally so I know there are no errors on the server itself. I've run out of ideas on this one. ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated.     - Help Needed. Hi, We are using OWA and it was working fine using a certificate on SSL port 443, we have a new investor website that we want up and running so we put that on SSL port 443 and that worked but it stopped OWA from working. So we put OWA on port 444 and it just wont work. I have tried :444 at the end of the URL but is still does not work but as soon as I put it back on the default it works fine.     - Directories showing Error in ISM after reboot We have a IIS Active/Passive Cluster installed- and whenever we reboot a server, the directories in ISM is showing a error status and due to that some of the applications were not working - I have to restart IIS in order for the error to disappear on the directories- I searched in google, and I found a way for the M Drive in Exchange Cluster- (which mentions to add the MSExchangeIS as a dependent service for IIS -See the link...) http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/19854/19854.html But I am not able see anything for IIS- Can someone help???     - Concurrent debuging of a webapplication on Windows Terminal Server Hi all - Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition with Terminal Services (5 Concurrent User) - IIS 6.0 - Visual Studio .NET 2003 - Visual Source Safe Problem: On our IIS Server is a webapplication on which at most 5 developers will develop and debug remotely via Remote Desktop. The problem ist, that when one developer starts a debug session, then no other developer can also start a debug session. There is a message shown like "w3wp.exe... there is already a debugg session attached" (I dont actually remember the correct error message). We also tried to check out the wepapplication from source safe into different webfolders for each developer, e.g. http://localhost/<Developer1>/WebApp, http://localhost/<Developer2>/WebApp but it is still not possible debug concurrent the same web application. I thought, that it is possible with Windows Server 2003 that each request, and so each debug session, uses its own w3wp process, isn't it? Is it possible to debug concurrent the same Webapplication on the same IIS? And when yes, what do i need to do that it works? Thank you for your help.     - hosting negotiations hi, i just 99% developed a web application written in asp & sql server i want to sell as a service. if it sells there are thousands of businesses that will benefit from it. since i was always in house programmer this is all new to me. hence, i need your help and giudance. i am 90% sure that it is secure so i will need someone to look at it once more. the app. also relies on small bespoke vb apps that will have to be made for every client. the client can develop there in house or i can do it or i can find someone to do it. once everything is set up the application will work on it's own and it will not require any extra effort from myself. i found a small hosting / programming place close to me so today (in 4 hrs) i will be going to se them. they can do hosting and check out the app and develope the small bespoke vb apps. so in order to get a good deal for myself my questions are: 1. what do you suggest i do about me suggesting to them to take some of the small vb app writing? (this would be a VERY good business) 2. if they take on some of the app writing, how mush do they do? if they take the whole part can i take a part of their profit? (after all it's my app that makes the whole thing possible) 3. how much should they look into the asp code and make the app secure. they will also need to make the app work on their system, they might suggest some new funcionality. 4. if we draw up the contract how long a term you suggest it should be? as you can see im here to get something that is fair for both sides. also, since im new to this im absolutely sure that i missed something so any other comments are appreciated VERY much! :) many thanks! --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.     - Quick WebDAV/LOCK question Using Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, IIS 6.0, WebDAV, DreamWeaver 2004 MX. One of our web developers has "checked out" a file on our prodution web site which has LOCK'd the file. In the mean time, no one else can access the file and IIS is giving a 404 when the file is requested. In DreamWeaver, the file shows as being checked out, and the IIS logs confirm the file was LOCK'd. I am unable to force UNLOCK or check-in the file with either a local administator account or a domain admin account. We've experienced this before, and in all cases the problem was resolved by having the same user "Check in" the file method so it's UNLOCK'd. My question is this: is there a way for an administrator to force UNLOCK a file so forgetful users don't render files unavailable for significant periods of time? We do need to be able to use version control in some cases, so preventing this by disabling the LOCK verb in URLScan is not an option. TIA!     - IIS 6 in IIS 5 compatibility mode and COM+ I am running a web application in the following scenario - IIS 6 configured in IIS 5 compatibility mode - The application is configured in High (Protected) Isolation mode - The package in COM+ runs under a normal user acount (called svc) - I have an ASP page that calls a component in another package (Biz) which runs under network service account - In the creator owner role of the Biz package, the users are: - Network Service - Svc - Desa (the user which I connect to the application) In this scenario when I connect to the application with user Desa the application works well, but if I remove the user Desa from the package (Biz) role, the application stops working. If I open the event viewer I see a Permision Denied error when calling the component. This happens because the default behavior of IIS is to impersonate the user that connects (in this case Desa). Is there any way to configure iis6 / Com+ so does not impersonate the user and make all operation with the credentials of the user the package runs (in this case svc) ?     - Cnnot downloa DTD file from IIS Hi, I'am not neither an IIS admin nor WEB developer, I just play with IIS on my PC. I have IIS 5.1. For browsing I use IE 6.0. When I download a dtd file (eg. xhtml1-strict.dtd) from my local host, I get IE error message box "Internet Explorer cannot download <filename> from <sitename>". My MIME type setting for.dtd is text/plain;charset=utf-8 When I change it to text/xml, download works (however there is parse error) When I change it to text/html, download works (however nothing is in IE window) When I change it to text/sgml, there is download error When I change the file name extesion to .txt, the download works. I want to use dtd files in ASP scripts for validation, so it is a problem for me.     - IIS 6.0 & WebDAV Help !! I have setup Windows Server 2003, setup IIS 6.0 to allows webdav and even have gone down the route of allowing everyone NTFS permissions to try and get it to work. The Home directory permissions are set for read, write and directory browsing. I have set this up loads of times on IIS 5.0 but I just can't see what is going wrong. When I try opening the site as a web folder it displays the message "files may have moved or are missing, do you want to the default view" etc. Any help would be appreciated.     - Please help - IIS App won't write to event log I am trying to migrate some ISAPI extensions from an NT4 server machine (IIS 4) to a windows 2003 machine (IIS6). The extensions work fine on the windows 2003 machine, but where they used to happily write errors to the application log on the old machine, they now do not. I am guessing that this is some sort of permissions issue. I have tried adding a key to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application for the event source, but this has not helped. I wanted to try stating the World Wide Web service under an account with administration privileges as a test, but when I set this service to start under any account other than System, I get and error message: ?Error 5: Access is denied.'     - Web Sharing After installing IIS, In windows explorer, when right clicking one of the folders, there should be four tabs that read : "General", "Sharing", "Web Sharimg" ,"Customise". My "Web Sharing Tab is for some reason is gone and I even microsoft support could not help me to get it back. I need to set the default app pool to a Domain Admin user, but evertime I do
I get the Service Unavailable error. And if i set it back to one of the
local users everthing is fine. What gives??

Is this domain user a member of the IIS_WPG group? If its not, it will
cause this error.
