 - cannot find server or DNS error I installed IIS 5.1 for XP professional SP1. Every think work fine on my server side. I can use a brownser to open www.mysite.com on my server computer. But no client computer can open my web site. They received the "Page cannot be displayed...... cannot find the server or DNS error". The client computer can successfully ping to www.mysite.com.  - Remove and Create the application server role in Windows Server 2003 I am using Windows Server 2003, and I create the role for application server, and have the roles for FTP server and SMTP server under IIS. My question is: If I remove the application server, and create the role again, do you think all the folders under IIS need to reset, and FTP and SMTP settings are gone as well??  - IIS and ASP Can somebody help out. I have tried running my asp pages on IIS here on my windows xp system Just upgraded from window-98 where I was using Personal Web Web Server. My asp pages were executing ok. Now I understand you have to use IIS in windows XP. When I type in : HTTP://localhost/index.html, this page works okay When I try a simple script like : <% response.write "Hello Page" %> which is in file test.asp, I run this: HTTP://localhost/test.asp. I get the following message from either IE 6.or Netscape: Server Application Error The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance. I look at the log file and it display this message: 13:07:15 66.185.85.76 GET /harry/test.asp 500 13:07:23 66.185.85.76 GET /test.asp 500 What have I done wrong? I have the following settings in my default web site: Give access for scripting and writing. I have installed Frontpage2002 extensions: I really need to do some asp scripting and I am at a lost.  - IIS on WindowsXP, default server stopped on restart Whenever I restart the WindowsXP, the default web site (localhost) must be restarted through IIS. This is just a recent occurrence. I get no event or error notification, and the default web starts fine from the IIS interface.  - IIS 6 Website on 2003 server I built a website use asp pages on my new 2003 server. I enabled asp because by default it is disabled... What else needs to be done to enable IIS 6 to serve the pages. Currently I'm getting error 500 internal server error. I also enabled parent paths and buffering.  - ISS SMTP Configuration This configuration page, shows current configuration. ( Sharepoint - FPEX 2002 ) The page shows.... " Specify the SMTP mail server to use for FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 e-mail-based features, such as subscriptions and invitations. Personalize the from and reply-to addresses, and select the mail encoding scheme and character set to use." There are two fields set by default but the "SMTP mail server:" is blank. ISS already include a SMTP server, so I am nuts here, should I leave it blank or type what in there ? I cant find much info about this, on some notes, saids enter the name of the server what does that means? This is the "LOCALHOST" so what I am going to enter there?  - 500 errors with no info We are seeing a bit of a strange issue currently; when reviewing the logs on a site, there are a lot of occurances of 'random' 500 errors without any information. Looks like this: 11/7/2003 18:03:51 10.0.0.1 - w3svc2 server1 10.0.0.5 80 - - - 500 0 0 0 421 These are dispersed throughout the log and follow regular and successful requests. The customer may experience a slight delay when one of these occurs, but never actually recieves an error on screen.  - SMTPSVC Warning Hi, In the system log of our RAS and VPN servers (which also is a RAS server) we get SMTPSVC warnings ID 100. The description reads, "The server was unable to logon the Windows NT account 'webmaster' due to the following error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. The data is the error code.".  - iis & script configuration It's possible to configure a virtual directory in IIS to allow an .asp script to run on pages with an .htm extension. It can be done in the 'virtual directories properties' dialog box, when configuring scripts & executables. Does this in any way compromise the security of the server, or any other virtual directory on the server? My problem is this: A web on the virtual directory was re-designed, and I need an external re-direct (for several pages) to provide search engines with a re-direct while retaining the previous pages rankings, without using a 'meta-redirect' or javascript. Changing the configuration of the virtual directory in IIS is the easiest way I can think of doing this, so I can use the following asp script to redirect the pages, which all had an .htm extension: <% Response.Status = "301 Moved Permanently" Response.addheader "Location", "http://www.newweblocation/newdirectory/newfile.shtm" Response.End %> This will accomplish the search engine friendly re-direct on the old pages with the .htm extension. It seems they are no longer converted to spaces by IIS and IIS returns a 404 error (no such file). I am sure this used to work correctly a couple of months ago. They are not being treated as "+" characters either. The + characters are infact generated by MS Content Management Server 2000.  - isapi filter cookie Hi, I am developing a pay-per-view web based application. I am writing an ISAPI filter that handles the security issues. When a user requests a page with embedded media file located in a particular directory the ISAPI checks whether the request came from a proper place by checking cookies. If verified the file is passed through. Otherwise the user is redirected to a signin page. This works well for html and image files but not for the media files. I noticed that when a request for a media file is processed the cookies are not accessible. I reckon that this is due to the fact that the request comes from the application (ie windows media player) rather than browser and therefore the cookies are not passed.  - Global IIS migration tool ? Hello, everyone I've recently "inherited" the admin of an IIS server that serves about 300 low traffic sites. I've been practicing contingency plans (there was none set up) in case something gets ugly on the HW side. My main concern is, how do I move (with relative ease) all the domains to a different server with different hw config? Aparently, the surest way to get a working backup restore is to restore the whole system, since the metabase is linked to the rest of the system. I tried the IIS migration wizard, but it's mostly a pain. Even if I restore just he settings and move the files manually from the backup medium, it takes forever and still mucks up some settings (and it doesn't even touches user permissions for FP extensions). I've been thinking of dumping the metabase to a text file (using the provided adsi scripts), doing whatever change is required on this file and re-importing it into the new server. The advante of this is, that if I want to perform a change on a large number of sites, I don't have to do it one by one. For example, if I need to change every site that is in the d:\web\whatever to e:\web\whatever, but not those on d:\website\whatever, a quick search and replace on a text editor might save my day. I tried using the metabase tool that microsoft provides, but unfortunately, it doesn't dump on clear text. My question is, is there a tool that might facilitate this? Either free or commercial? I realize that the best practice would be to set a cluster on high availability but since that would require a period of developement, I need to come up with a shorter term solution. It works absolutely fine on our old web server running NT4.0/IIS4 as long as windows authentication is turned off and the Anonymous login account is changed to a special domain account that has read access to these directories. Copying the .asp file to our new NT5.0/IIS5 server exhibits really odd behaviour: a) when Windows Authentication is turned on, the page can't read the contents of the directories (it tries to use the logged in user's account, which won't work). The code correctly detects and reports this error condition (the FileSystemObject's GetFolder method returns an error code). b) when Windows Authentication is turned off, the page can access the directories, but it receives an empty request.form collection (request.form.count) is empty. If I change the form to method="GET" instead of method="POST" everything works fine. But I need to POST this information. The logs show only a single POST request for the page (so it isn't being redirected or re-requested to sort out log in information). Why does this work on IIS4 and not IIS5?  - IIS Windows Integrated Authentication Question I have a Windows 2003 server as a Member Server, not a Domain Controller. I have integrated authentication checked in IIS. This seems to work from the clients. However, if the webpage has a datasource in its asp page, then I get an error that says the user does not have permission to get to the object that the page is trying to get to (the web page itself is allowed). Doing the same thing from a domain cotroller (from the client again) yields the data. The IUSR account is not being used on any of them; it is all purerly supposed to run on integrated authentication. Does the fact that my 2003 server is not a domain controller have anything to do with it? It seems to be. The white papers from Microsoft say that 2003 member servers can be used for web servers. Can anyone help me with analysing this one? Note: - I have used the -SC switch (softcrash). - If i don't use the softcrash switch, the site can run for hours before it stops responding. It's a problem to get a trace at that point but i will try bij letting iis isolating the worker process.  - Problem with integrated Windows Authentication Hi, it seems that i do something wrong to use the integrated windows authentication I created a folder on the webserver for example d:\test Then i gave to this folder IISServer\Administrators -> Full Access User A -> Read Access User B -> Read Access After this, i created a virtual folder in IIS, with read and browse right in it. Turned the Integrated Windows Authentication on and the anonymous access of. As an administrator, i am always able to get in the website. It works just fine for all users, but some Windows XP-users have experienced this: they are prompted for username and password when they leave the intranet and are "surfing" on the Internet. We're using a proxy. We also have Windows 2000-users and they never get this problem. Example: The user starts the Intranet it works fine, now the user enters for example www.google.com: now the user is prompted for username and password. Any ideas? As normal i can use the url http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/ to get browser access to execute the ASP pages that reside there. I am running an ASP script on my managed server that needs to locally run another ASP page on that same server and return some data. The MSXML2.ServerXMLHTTP object requires any input to be preceded with http:// so i cannot use simple "./scripts/script.asp". The hosting company i use is telling me that it is impossible for my script running on SERVER to access another script running on SERVER using http://something. Is it possible to configure more than 1 web site on Windows 2000 Server running IIS so that all web sites can be accessed using http://localhost or something similar? For some reason I get an error from IIS to the effect that I cannot run an update query against the Access database (I can read the database without a problem, just not write to it).  - IIS 6 Search Engine Hi, I migrated our IIS4 server to a 2003 server/IIS6 and now our search engine's broken. I have index server configured correctly, the sites are checked to index themselves, they seem to be indexing no problem, catalogs are all there. I've tried the registry hack where you put in the absolute path for index server to start from. We're using search.html that returns query.idx, after being formatted by query.htx, that kind of setup. Hi all,

Bit of a problem - running W2k3 server, installed SA-FileUp the other day to
find that there were errors in the event viewer.

Having read up, the SA-FileUp documentation says that if you're using IIS6
(Windows XP and so on) you must run IIS in Windows IIS5 isolation mode...

Having finally found where this was I checked the box and restarted the
services, all seemed ok...

I have however today discovered that if the IIS is in Windows Isolation Mode
then I cant access ANY of the websites using MS Frontpage - it just says
connecting to server and eventually gives up with an error about
passwords/file protection/no existing etc etc...

I changed the setting back just now - and I can now access all of the
websites with MS Frontpage again... :o/

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? I have no idea what the
isolation mode actually is/does - but I DO need to be able to use the
SA-FileUp component, and I DO need to be able to access the websites using

| Bit of a problem - running W2k3 server, installed SA-FileUp the other day to
| find that there were errors in the event viewer.

| Having read up, the SA-FileUp documentation says that if you're using IIS6
| (Windows XP and so on) you must run IIS in Windows IIS5 isolation mode...

| Having finally found where this was I checked the box and restarted the
| services, all seemed ok...

| I have however today discovered that if the IIS is in Windows Isolation Mode
| then I cant access ANY of the websites using MS Frontpage - it just says
| connecting to server and eventually gives up with an error about
| passwords/file protection/no existing etc etc...
