All,

Environment:
Brand new WinXP Pro install with IIS 5.1 (no SP, patches, updates, etc.).
No configuration changes made to IIS, no changes made to XP (other than
adding IIS)

Scenario:
When I run inetmgr, then r-click on <machinename>, the content menu has no
"Properties" option. How do I edit the global MIME types for the server?
In IIS 5 and IIS 6, you do it via this menu then the "MIME Types" button in
the Properties dialog.

If I expand the <machinename> tree, and r-click on "Web Sites" I have a
"Properties" menu item and can get the MIME types for directories (HTTP
Headers tab/MIME types button/etc.), but you can only add types here, not
remove them. By default, the list of MIME types for directories is empty.

I searched back several thousand messages, and others have asked about
similar problems, but no solution has ever been suggested (aside from
uninstall/reinstall IIS, which BTW, doesn't work). Is IIS 5.1 broken in
this regard? Are we supposed to use some other method to edit the metabase?
How can you get to the server level properties?

Any help is appreciated.

Keith

P.S. The same thing happens on a totally current, patched, SP'd XP pro
machine, so...

Hi Keith,

This behavior was by design in Windows XP, however, it will be changed with
the release of SP2. In the meantime, you can access the MIME types using
Metabase Explorer. Here's a link to the download:

Hope this helps!
