    - Can't connect to computer on my laptop I was running IIS on my laptop (using XP pro sp 2 pentium II 512mb ram etc.) and tried to uninstall and install IE - not knowing that this would kill IIS. I don't remember which build I had but I downloaded IIS 6 from Msoft and installed. When I run that and try to connect to the computer on my laptop (and I know it's the right one...I'm testing asp pages etc. for work and my bookmarked url's show me the machine name. Also, in the IIS dialog box it finds the name in the 'browse'..) I get an error dialog box saying "This computer is not running Internet Information Services version 4 or higher". I'm pretty sure the old one was 5. I have shut down and rebooted a few times. What else can I do to get this running and keep working?     - Mails aren't delivered from IIS6.0 to Exchange 2003 Dear all folks, A contact us form of our site (IIS 6.0) using cdonts objects to create an email sending to a specific internal email account. The mail is created successfully at c:\inetpub\mailroot\pickup. At the end the mail is undeliverable and goes to c:\inetpub\mailroot\badmail. When I open the *.bdr files at c:\inetpub\mailroot\badmail, it shows the few lines below Unable to deliver this message because the follow error was encountered: "This message is a delivery status notification that cannot be delivered.". The specific error code was 0xC00402C7. The message sender was <>. The message was intended for the following recipients. xxx@ourowndomain.com In addition, In IIS6.0 event viewer, event 4000 is shown. The SMTP services and Default SMTP Virtual Server are disabled in IIS 6.0 server. The message is not delivered as expected from IIS6.0 to one of our Exchange 2003 server. I have goes through microsoft KB and try several resolutions it still not working. According to user, it does work before and I have make no change to the IIS 6.0 Server.     - Registering .NET 1.1 and IIS I have Windows XP professional Edition and IIS 5.1 and Visual Studio .NET 2003. When I try to create a new project in Visual Studio it says that IIS is not running .NET 1.1 and can not continue. I had this working once and a System Administrator was looking at an email problem for another machine and looked at mine (which worked) made some changes and it no longer worked. So I uninstalled IIS and visual Studio and re-installed and now have the problem described up. I also went to the .NET framework directory for 1.1 and tried to execute aspnet_regiis, but it was not recognized as an executable file. How can I get this to work again?     - IIS6.0 - Missing HTTP 100 Continue response Hello group, right before the weekend, I encountered a problem with an ASP.Net web application running on a Windows 2003 server. I have installed the same web application on a Windows 2000 machine with IIS 5.0 where everything works fine. Both web applications use windows authentication to identify users. The problem which occurs when using the Windows2003 web app is that when starting a long running task on the server, a login window appears where the user is asked to login again. I used a http sniffer to track the communications between Internet Explorer and IIS and found out that everytime a POST command is sent to IIS5.0 it is answered with 100 Continue from the server. After that it takes a while, but the job is finished correctly. On the Windows 2003 server I do not receive a 100 Continue, instead after a little bit more than 90 seconds, the browser resends its previous POST command, and receives a 401 Access denied. Right after that the login dialog pops up. Does anybody have an idea how I can prevent Internet Explorer from reposting the previous command, or better, how can I make IIS 6.0 to answer the POST command with a 100 Continue?     - Troubleshooting High Anonymous User Traffic On occasion, usually once a week, we have some process that is generating a spike in anonymous users. During normal operations the current anonymous user count is less than 10. When the spike occurs the count will jump from 0 to over 50 and then continues to climb in a matter of a milliseconds. Once this spike reaches around 80-100 the server becomes unresponsive. By unresponsive meaning that I cannot access it through a terminal service connection (remote desktop) and have to physically restart the server. After the restart all traffic is processed as normal until the spike occurs again. This issue of anonymous users was originally tied to custom DLLs that were not compiled correctly. They were not compiled with the unattended execution or retained in memory options selected. Once these were recompiled the anonymous user counts were more stable and the frequency of restarting the IIS server was reduced. We are currently logging the performance counter for Web Service(_Total)\Current Anonymous Users to a file to identify when the counts are increasing but have not been able to isolate the root cause.     - Intermittent Server 500 errors WIn 2k AS running an WLBS web farm. The load is balanced equally. On weekdays I get between 50000 to 100000 hits on each server. About 70% of that is static content. One of the servers is logging asp_0147|500_Server_error in some of the ASP apps. I also notice that once the 500 error is logged I cannot open the property page for any IIS VD in IIS Mgr mmc on the affected server. It thinks the page is open but I cannot see it. Yesterday I got proof that this is occurring more than it appears in the IIS Logs. (So IIS is failing to log all occurrances of this error!) The requests fail to be logged at all! I have to reboot the server to clear the problem but it comes back after a few days. I installed latest updates on 6/22 and this started on 7/5 (that is I first see it in the logs on 7/5). We have another individual win2k IIS server running a 3rd party product. It was also updated on 6/22 and is generating a lot of 500 errors now. The thrid party app is an isapi application that runs db queries. It makes me wonder if this is related? Any ideas? How do I fix this? Thanks in advance.     - Resize photo store on server? I have a Windows 2000 server. My ASP application allows users to upload a photo for display to other users. Unfortunately everyones photos are different sizes. I'd like to resize the photo to 150px wide while maintaining the aspect ratio of the photo. Is there anything built into IIS/ASP that will allow me to do this?     - Application pool doesn't start with domain account Hi, I have a network of 3 server ( windows 2003 server ) : A, B, C A is e domain controller with active directory B is a server of domain where is installed IIS 6.0 I Would like to start an application pool over a WebSite of B with an identity of domain and not as "Network Service" So, I created an user on active directory ( _usrsvc ) that's member of Administrator of domain, of Domain Admins, of Domain Users and of IIS_WPG, but when I start up the website I receive this message in event viewer : "The identity of application pool 'SmartAppPool' is invalid, so the World Wide Web Publishing Service can not create a worker process to serve the application pool. Therefore, the application pool has been disabled." What permission user of domain must have to start application pool?!     - User must change password at next logon Hi I have a problem with password expiration and a web application. We have developed a Sharepoint site for projects in our company (to cooperate with external partners). Whenever a user is created on the IIS we would like to give them a pre-expired password, so they need to change it at firstlogon. We have tried with the "User must change password at next logon" but can't get it to work.     - Unexplained timeouts runnig IIS 6 and Tomcat 4 I've developed a (.jsp page )web application that runs a long time before it produces any real visible output to the screen. It seems to work well when running from machine A, but never from machines B and C, always runing into a "page cannot be found" when it dies. I've investigated a bit an learned that there are any number of timeout restrictions on the connetion, session,etc. The difficulty here is learning which timeout is actually the problem. As a web application, run through the browser, I would expect similar runtimes, or characteristic failures, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why the aplication runs 20 minutes once, 2 minutes another time, and over 3 hours a third time. All using the same servers, code, data, etc. What does vary is the time of day, and the relative load on the servers, and the machine which is running the page.     - Running a Batch File inside IIS 6 Hi I have a problem when I switched from IIS 5 to IIS 6(windows 2000 server to Windows2003). I have a DLL inside my IIS to create a batch file and then execute that. The creation of batch file is working but it is not executing inside IIS 6. It was working fine on IIS 5 web server. I am using API calls to run the Batch File (WinExe() and ShellExecute()). I tried both API calls to run the batch file from my DLL. Both are working great in IIS 5. All other part of DLL is working except Running of batch file. Are there any special settings to run Batch file from IIS 6? Please help me solve this problem.     - Problems downloading zip files from IIS 6 site Hi! I have a problem with a website on IIS 6, where a zip file is published. When someone using WinXP and IE is downloading the zip file, the file seems corrupt when the zip file is downloaded and opened. The specific content of the zip file is not the content is was meant to be, it just contains one file without any file extension. When I rename that file to e.g. .zip og unzips that one, the correct zipped content is within this file. So it seems like the file is added an extra zip layer, which seems weird. When I download the same file using Firefox everything is OK. IIS 6 is setup to use HTTP Compression. Anyone got an idea to what might be wrong ? Thanks in advance.     - WCAT - Creating a Performance Counter Input File I got this error "Unable to collect data. Error = -2147481643(800007d5)" when I run the wcctl -a server -c test.cfg -s test.scr -p test.pfc -n servername. I think it is due to lock of permission to run perfmon remotely. I change the "Performance Logs and Alerts" to service account according to the Q240389. I still got the same error when I run wcctl. I was able to collect the data using the Microsoft Perfmon.msc for the remote computer. Anyone has any idea why? How can I fixed the permission problem? Thanks!     - XP Home upgraded to XP Pro SP2 won't install IIS I have a laptop (toshiba satellite) that was on XP Home. It has since been upgraded to XP Pro SP2 via Windows XP Pro SP 2 cd - purchased. When I try to go to the install IIS through either the cd or add/remove programs Windows Optional Components, it fails. Can't find staxmem.dll - even though it I can find it and point it to it. I went through all of Microsofts suggestions for fixing it , method 1 and method 2. No luck. Still no go. I really don't want to have to reformat just to load IIS.     - Error '800a01ad' on Windows Server 2003 I'm trying to use a DLL written in VB6 on a windows 2003 server in an ASP page. The DLL worked fine with IIS on Windows 2000 and XP computers but with 2003 I keep getting an error: error '800a01ad' ActiveX component can't create object I have tried accessing the DLL with a VB6 test program and that works fine. I have changed the permissions for the TSBS.dll (my dll file) and the DartTelnet control, which is one thing my dll uses, too allow full control for the IUSR and even Network Service. I have also made sure the files were registered multiple times. When I run filemon I get the following which is really weird and maybe this will be a clue to my solution: QUEREY INFORMATION C:\windows\system32\inetsrv32\Dart.Telnet.1 NOT FOUND Attributes:error. I don't know why it is looking in the inetsrv32 directory for a file named Dart.Telnet.1. Like I said before the Dart Telnet control is registered in C:\Windows\System32 along with my dll. If anyone has any ideas on what could be happening here it would be great. I don't really understand why I'm having so many problems with 2003 and this dll is so easy to set up on 2000. I'm having a problem with msnbot and IIS giving status codes of 406 for .html files and I need to know the accept type header that msnbot is sending when it tries to retrieve .html files.     - Best Practices: Setting the IIS Install Path Can anyone tell me why MS decided to remove the capability to set the install path for IIS through the install GUI? I understand that this path can be modified if an unattended setup file is used. Is MS trying to tell us that IIS should almost always be installed to C:? We have always installed IIS on a separate drive than the O/S.     - question on web log file In the past few days, several entries like the following have showed up in my 2003 server web log from several different ip addresses. I see the server response is 401-unauthorized but am unsure if I should consider this as a threat and block these IP addresses or if this might be an incorrect address given by an image bot. 2005-08-03 01:09:58 GET / - 68.80.33.236 - - 401 0 5698 125 I'm also interested in knowing what they did to create an entry in my log such as this.     - IIS 6 not serving aspx pages Hi IIS version : 6.0 Windows version: Server 2003. I have windows updated everything. This is a tearing my hair out kinda problem.. To summarise: I am creating a whole new box and want to run an ASP website on IIS, which is fine on another box (Not in any order) 1. I have enabled v1.1 .NET framework in Web Service extensions. 2. I have installed my .NET app 3. I have run asp_regiis blah blah -i 4. I can view HTML pages under my application. Now the problem.. I get a "Page Cannot be Displayed" on ANY aspx page, and I have now hit a wall.. Has anybody any other areas I should take a look at, maybe security on directories? or something I have missed..     - Problem in Web Site initiation Hi, This might be already discussed one. I have Windows 2003 Web Server with IIS 6.0. The web site was working fine and it was set to the root of the web site. (ie. http://domain/) When I installed the Sharepoint server, everything became ugly. It set the Sharepoint server as default page. This affects my existing web site and prompting for Authentication.     - iis lockdown Monday night I was running MSBA on all our servers, I also applied IISLockdown to all the machines and now... I have a machine that was used for a single persons VPN. the user fails to connect now so I was trying to see if IISlockdown was involved. SO I try to run IISlockdown and it won't start. W3SVC is disabled and won't enable. I changed the registry setting from 0x04 (disabled) to 0x02 (automatic). Now IISlockdown will run (actsa like it has never been run before) but W3SVC still won't start and gives error 1058 "either the service is disabled or there are no devices associated with the service". what did I do?     - how to set hostname on IIS 5 & Win2K My Content-Location header is sending the machine name instead of the domain name (ie snoopy instead of www.domain.com). I found an MS KB article about setting hostname in IIS 6 but not for IIS5 under Win2K Pro.     - networked virtual directories on XP I'm running IIS 5.1 on XP SP2. I have setup a virtual directory referencing a network share \\[server]\[share]. From the IIS control panel interface, I get the stop sign icon next to the share. I can choose to open or explore the virtual directory, and get access to the network share contents fine. However, browsing the directory gives me a "The page cannot be displayed" error, and the directory status reads "access denied." Web pages that include graphic urls referencing the virtual directory similarly do not load. I have the exact same setup on a Windows 2000 machine, and though I get the stop sign error icon and the "access denied status" error as well, I can both browse the directory as well as load the images urls in my web application that reference the virtual directory.     - Problem using includes and virtual directories I have a new Win2K3 server (IIS6) which has SSI and PHP installed on it. Both services are working fine as is with local files The intranet website that is going on this server uses SSI and PHP includes, which work fine as long as the included files are residing on the local server. However, these files reside on a second server - so, I setup a virtual directory - pointing to the second server via UNC, setup a static User/Pwd to connect, set appropriate rights. I can browse the directory and view the files by typing in the URL. But, by using the include function, I either get 'Cannot process SSI file' or a blank area where the php include file is suppose to be. I have even tried setting up a virtual directory to a local folder (outside of wwwroot) and I receive the same errors. I have tried both absolute references (include file="http://webserver/all/folder/file.shtml") and virtual references (include virtual="all/folder/file.shtml") to no avail. I believe there is some type of permissions issue using the include function since the page works fine if I access it from the webserver (via IE) - just every workstation I've tried results in the above error. The only way I have been able to get it to work is to set the entire site to basic authentication - this would prompt the user for their U/P - and once that is entered, the site works fine. While this works, its not feasible to be a solution. The site now is set to use integrated authentication and has anonymous access disabled. Have configured a new Server 2003 Server to replace the old one. Is it practical to simply give the new Server the same IP as the old server?     - IIS 6.0 and FrontPage Issue I'm not sure if this is the correct forum or note... I'm running a Windows 2003 server w/ IIS and FrontPage excensions loaded. All forms seem to work except for our contact page. The error is: URL: www.domain.com/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/contactus.htm Displayed text is: Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions on this page: http://www.domain.com/contactus.htm The only thing that has changed is that at the root of our site, the Execute Permissions were changed from "Script only" to "Scripts and Executables" and the setting was pushed down to all sub directories/files. I did go back and change it to "None", push it down to all subs, then to "Scripts only" and only pushed the setting to _vti_bin folder. I have gone back in and "Checked Server 2002 extensions" and it tell me that all is fine. We do have some asp pages at the root of our site which do work. Thanks.     - SBS FTP setup with Isolated users Ok, here's the deal. I've spent 2 days googling and searching Technet to no avail. I have a client with a Windows 2003 SBS SP1 server. They have 2 users who need ftp access, but no access to each others stuff (aka isolated). We are running on a AD Domain (SBS requires it) and I have setup many ftp sites on NT4 and Win2k. I have set the ftp server up to Isolate the user (without AD and with). When I attempt to login to the site I get "530 User heritage cannot log in, home directory inaccessible." Now, there is TONS of info on this error in the newsgroups and on MS's support sites, but it all deals with using Local Users (creating the <ftp root folder>/LocalUser/Username path). I need to do this with a simple login (hopefully not domainname/username) and get to my home folders. This shouldn't be this difficult, but like all things SBS, the "easiness" makes this a friggen nightmare. For the sake of storing data where I want, I'd like to use the AD isolation (so I can just point their FTP server to one of their private folders), but at this point, either way will be fine with me.     - IIS 6.0 Migration Tool Woes I'm trying to migrate my web site from one box, to a new box, and from IIS5 to IIS6. I'm using the IIS6.0 Migration Tool to do this. It appears to work fine. All the content, ACL's, and even metabase settings come over quite well. The only problem is that for my largest site, no matter what I do, I get "404 not found" errors for anything I try to see -- static html -- you name it. If I create a new site, and point it to the content directory, it starts serves the same content just fine. (At least the static content) If I then migrate the configuration-only over the the top of that site, I'm back to 404 errors. My tech support has been of little help so far. Microsoft documentation suggests migrating the thing by hand, but that is a gigantic task, with some odd 400 Frontpage Subwebs, many with customized metabase settings of some sort. How could one go about figuring out what the cause of the problem is. I'm not much of a metabase hacker, but it appears that's what I'm going to have to learn.     - Type mismatch error from creation of ActiveX object for XML parser I'm trying to get the Microsoft Enterprise Learning Library working on a webserver. I have successfully installed it in the past when using a connection to a MSSQL database, but this time I didn't connect to a database and I'm having more trouble. I give that as preface since I don't know if it is related. At the end of installing one of the modules, I get the following error message. Unable to open IIS W3SVC Root objet - please ensure that IIS is running - Error Details: [Number:80070003] The install seems to go okay except for that. The machine has been rebooted since installation.     - IIS and Apache I have two websites that I would like to run on a server. There is a problem, though. One is written in VB.NET and the other is written in PHP/MySQL. I was wondering if there is a way to have Apache and IIS installed on the same machine and have it work properly(www.1site.com will go to the IIS site and www.2site.com will go to the Apache site).     - IIS5, IWAM, syncIwam, & server application errors. We have a an IIS5 server which hosts a number of sites, a few of which host a number of directories in high-isolation mode. Every few days one or a few of these application spaces will turn up a server application error (Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer). Running syncIwam.vbs immediately remidies it. We confirmed the IWAM username and password from the metabase matches the values in the COM+ registrations for the various application spaces and have rekey'd the values a number of times just to be certain. Our issue is that these application spaces seem to just "lose" the credentials after a few days. We could setup syncIwam to force an update every few hours to keep the values in check but it's not really an acceptable answer. I have several admin scripts which worked on win2000 servers and a built from the ground up win 2003 server. Specifically: set providerObj = locatorObj.ConnectServer(Server, "root/MicrosoftIISv2", [domain\username], [password]) This line now fails on the UPGRADED box only with an access denied and an event log entry: Access to the root\MicrosoftIISv2 namespace was denied. The namespace is marked with RequiresEncryption but the client connection was attempted with an authentication level below Pkt_Privacy. Re try the connection using Pkt_Privacy authentication level. Questions: How do I mark this as Not RequiresEncryption? Do I want to do this?     - Outgoing mail stuck in Queue folder I'm running Windows 2003 Web edition with POP3 service. I'm trying to configure my server to allow relaying so I made some changes to my access settings. Currently I have Anonymous access, Basic authentication and Integrated Windows Authentication checked. Before I made this change I only have Anonymous checked and was able to send and receive email from only with the same domain. Since the changes though I cannot receive email. All emails get stuck in the Queue folder and never get sent. The event viewer shows Event ID: 4006 "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt". I tried sending to several different domains and they all return the same msg. These domains were all deliverable before I made the change. Any suggestions? I am not sure i understand. IIS does not decide what is showing in the
browser's address field.

Or what do you mean by URL? Where is this URL shown? In the HTML on the
pages?

That's because the IP address is being used to call the URL, either in
a link, the original URL or a forward.
