    - XP Home upgraded to XP Pro SP2 won't install IIS I have a laptop (toshiba satellite) that was on XP Home. It has since been upgraded to XP Pro SP2 via Windows XP Pro SP 2 cd - purchased. When I try to go to the install IIS through either the cd or add/remove programs Windows Optional Components, it fails. Can't find staxmem.dll - even though it I can find it and point it to it. I went through all of Microsofts suggestions for fixing it , method 1 and method 2. No luck. Still no go. I really don't want to have to reformat just to load IIS.     - Error '800a01ad' on Windows Server 2003 I'm trying to use a DLL written in VB6 on a windows 2003 server in an ASP page. The DLL worked fine with IIS on Windows 2000 and XP computers but with 2003 I keep getting an error: error '800a01ad' ActiveX component can't create object I have tried accessing the DLL with a VB6 test program and that works fine. I have changed the permissions for the TSBS.dll (my dll file) and the DartTelnet control, which is one thing my dll uses, too allow full control for the IUSR and even Network Service. I have also made sure the files were registered multiple times. When I run filemon I get the following which is really weird and maybe this will be a clue to my solution: QUEREY INFORMATION C:\windows\system32\inetsrv32\Dart.Telnet.1 NOT FOUND Attributes:error. I don't know why it is looking in the inetsrv32 directory for a file named Dart.Telnet.1. Like I said before the Dart Telnet control is registered in C:\Windows\System32 along with my dll. If anyone has any ideas on what could be happening here it would be great. I don't really understand why I'm having so many problems with 2003 and this dll is so easy to set up on 2000.     - Default page in IIS when stopping a site? I am hosting a site for a small business, and I need to stop the site from being accessable for a little while. Is there a way that when I stop the site in IIS, that instead of the message saying that the 'site is under construction' that I can put up my own error message? What error # is it?     - server busy I develop (Visual Studio 2003) on my Windows XP machine. Too often I get 403 "server busy" errors from the web server because I have too many connections open. It appears that Microsoft has limited the numbers of connections on XP's IIS to avoid use as a server... an unintentional consequence is that it is hindering my development. Any workarounds?     - How to view/save headers from certain clients What tool can I use for IIS v5 that will allow me to save/view HTTP request headers? I'm having a problem with msnbot and IIS giving status codes of 406 for .html files and I need to know the accept type header that msnbot is sending when it tries to retrieve .html files.     - Best Practices: Setting the IIS Install Path Can anyone tell me why MS decided to remove the capability to set the install path for IIS through the install GUI? I understand that this path can be modified if an unattended setup file is used. Is MS trying to tell us that IIS should almost always be installed to C:? We have always installed IIS on a separate drive than the O/S. We are currently writing our install procedures for IIS 6 and need to decide whether to go with an unattend file or use the gui and let iis install to C:. Thanks for your input!     - question on web log file In the past few days, several entries like the following have showed up in my 2003 server web log from several different ip addresses. I see the server response is 401-unauthorized but am unsure if I should consider this as a threat and block these IP addresses or if this might be an incorrect address given by an image bot. 2005-08-03 01:09:58 GET / - 68.80.33.236 - - 401 0 5698 125 I'm also interested in knowing what they did to create an entry in my log such as this. When I browse to http://myComputer/ I get the website under construction page and quite a different entry in the log file. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.     - IIS 6 not serving aspx pages Hi IIS version : 6.0 Windows version: Server 2003. I have windows updated everything. This is a tearing my hair out kinda problem.. To summarise: I am creating a whole new box and want to run an ASP website on IIS, which is fine on another box (Not in any order) 1. I have enabled v1.1 .NET framework in Web Service extensions. 2. I have installed my .NET app 3. I have run asp_regiis blah blah -i 4. I can view HTML pages under my application. Now the problem.. I get a "Page Cannot be Displayed" on ANY aspx page, and I have now hit a wall.. Has anybody any other areas I should take a look at, maybe security on directories? or something I have missed..     - Problem in Web Site initiation Hi, This might be already discussed one. I have Windows 2003 Web Server with IIS 6.0. The web site was working fine and it was set to the root of the web site. (ie. http://domain/) When I installed the Sharepoint server, everything became ugly. It set the Sharepoint server as default page. This affects my existing web site and prompting for Authentication. Now I removed the Sharepoint server and there is no hope. Still the application prompts for authentication. Any help would be appreciated.     - iis lockdown Monday night I was running MSBA on all our servers, I also applied IISLockdown to all the machines and now... I have a machine that was used for a single persons VPN. the user fails to connect now so I was trying to see if IISlockdown was involved. SO I try to run IISlockdown and it won't start. W3SVC is disabled and won't enable. I changed the registry setting from 0x04 (disabled) to 0x02 (automatic). Now IISlockdown will run (actsa like it has never been run before) but W3SVC still won't start and gives error 1058 "either the service is disabled or there are no devices associated with the service". what did I do?     - how to set hostname on IIS 5 & Win2K My Content-Location header is sending the machine name instead of the domain name (ie snoopy instead of www.domain.com). I found an MS KB article about setting hostname in IIS 6 but not for IIS5 under Win2K Pro. Where is IIS getting this name (I guess it's from the computer name under My Computer | Network ID) and how can I set it to the "real" FQDN for my server?     - networked virtual directories on XP I'm running IIS 5.1 on XP SP2. I have setup a virtual directory referencing a network share \\[server]\[share]. From the IIS control panel interface, I get the stop sign icon next to the share. I can choose to open or explore the virtual directory, and get access to the network share contents fine. However, browsing the directory gives me a "The page cannot be displayed" error, and the directory status reads "access denied." Web pages that include graphic urls referencing the virtual directory similarly do not load. I have the exact same setup on a Windows 2000 machine, and though I get the stop sign error icon and the "access denied status" error as well, I can both browse the directory as well as load the images urls in my web application that reference the virtual directory.     - Problem using includes and virtual directories I have a new Win2K3 server (IIS6) which has SSI and PHP installed on it. Both services are working fine as is with local files The intranet website that is going on this server uses SSI and PHP includes, which work fine as long as the included files are residing on the local server. However, these files reside on a second server - so, I setup a virtual directory - pointing to the second server via UNC, setup a static User/Pwd to connect, set appropriate rights. I can browse the directory and view the files by typing in the URL. But, by using the include function, I either get 'Cannot process SSI file' or a blank area where the php include file is suppose to be. I have even tried setting up a virtual directory to a local folder (outside of wwwroot) and I receive the same errors. I have tried both absolute references (include file="http://webserver/all/folder/file.shtml") and virtual references (include virtual="all/folder/file.shtml") to no avail. I believe there is some type of permissions issue using the include function since the page works fine if I access it from the webserver (via IE) - just every workstation I've tried results in the above error. The only way I have been able to get it to work is to set the entire site to basic authentication - this would prompt the user for their U/P - and once that is entered, the site works fine. While this works, its not feasible to be a solution. The site now is set to use integrated authentication and has anonymous access disabled. Have configured a new Server 2003 Server to replace the old one. Is it practical to simply give the new Server the same IP as the old server?     - IIS 6.0 and FrontPage Issue I'm not sure if this is the correct forum or note... I'm running a Windows 2003 server w/ IIS and FrontPage excensions loaded. All forms seem to work except for our contact page. The error is: URL: www.domain.com/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/contactus.htm Displayed text is: Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions on this page: http://www.domain.com/contactus.htm The only thing that has changed is that at the root of our site, the Execute Permissions were changed from "Script only" to "Scripts and Executables" and the setting was pushed down to all sub directories/files. I did go back and change it to "None", push it down to all subs, then to "Scripts only" and only pushed the setting to _vti_bin folder. I have gone back in and "Checked Server 2002 extensions" and it tell me that all is fine. We do have some asp pages at the root of our site which do work. Thanks.     - SBS FTP setup with Isolated users Ok, here's the deal. I've spent 2 days googling and searching Technet to no avail. I have a client with a Windows 2003 SBS SP1 server. They have 2 users who need ftp access, but no access to each others stuff (aka isolated). We are running on a AD Domain (SBS requires it) and I have setup many ftp sites on NT4 and Win2k. I have set the ftp server up to Isolate the user (without AD and with). When I attempt to login to the site I get "530 User heritage cannot log in, home directory inaccessible." Now, there is TONS of info on this error in the newsgroups and on MS's support sites, but it all deals with using Local Users (creating the <ftp root folder>/LocalUser/Username path). I need to do this with a simple login (hopefully not domainname/username) and get to my home folders. This shouldn't be this difficult, but like all things SBS, the "easiness" makes this a friggen nightmare. For the sake of storing data where I want, I'd like to use the AD isolation (so I can just point their FTP server to one of their private folders), but at this point, either way will be fine with me.     - IIS 6.0 Migration Tool Woes I'm trying to migrate my web site from one box, to a new box, and from IIS5 to IIS6. I'm using the IIS6.0 Migration Tool to do this. It appears to work fine. All the content, ACL's, and even metabase settings come over quite well. The only problem is that for my largest site, no matter what I do, I get "404 not found" errors for anything I try to see -- static html -- you name it. If I create a new site, and point it to the content directory, it starts serves the same content just fine. (At least the static content) If I then migrate the configuration-only over the the top of that site, I'm back to 404 errors. My tech support has been of little help so far. Microsoft documentation suggests migrating the thing by hand, but that is a gigantic task, with some odd 400 Frontpage Subwebs, many with customized metabase settings of some sort. How could one go about figuring out what the cause of the problem is. I'm not much of a metabase hacker, but it appears that's what I'm going to have to learn.     - Type mismatch error from creation of ActiveX object for XML parser I'm trying to get the Microsoft Enterprise Learning Library working on a webserver. I have successfully installed it in the past when using a connection to a MSSQL database, but this time I didn't connect to a database and I'm having more trouble. I give that as preface since I don't know if it is related. At the end of installing one of the modules, I get the following error message. Unable to open IIS W3SVC Root objet - please ensure that IIS is running - Error Details: [Number:80070003] The install seems to go okay except for that. The machine has been rebooted since installation. The following chunk of ASP jscript code is throwing an exception whose message is "Type mismatch". sFile = "E:\MELL\ENG\Desktop\ADOFF03\mpimanifest.xml" function LoadXMLFile(sFile) { var oXML = new ActiveXObject(Application("xmlParserProgID")); That path to the XML file is correct and the contents of the file appear to be correct. I think it is having trouble creating the XML parser object. I tried to install the MS XML parser included with the installer, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I expect that the whole system will work properly if I can get it to read the XML files and put up the menu that is derived from them.     - IIS and Apache I have two websites that I would like to run on a server. There is a problem, though. One is written in VB.NET and the other is written in PHP/MySQL. I was wondering if there is a way to have Apache and IIS installed on the same machine and have it work properly(www.1site.com will go to the IIS site and www.2site.com will go to the Apache site). The software that is written in PHP/MySQL only works with Apache so I have no choice there.     - IIS5, IWAM, syncIwam, & server application errors. We have a an IIS5 server which hosts a number of sites, a few of which host a number of directories in high-isolation mode. Every few days one or a few of these application spaces will turn up a server application error (Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer). Running syncIwam.vbs immediately remidies it. We confirmed the IWAM username and password from the metabase matches the values in the COM+ registrations for the various application spaces and have rekey'd the values a number of times just to be certain. Our issue is that these application spaces seem to just "lose" the credentials after a few days. We could setup syncIwam to force an update every few hours to keep the values in check but it's not really an acceptable answer.     - IIS 6 (Windows 2003 Server UPGRADE) Last night we upgraded and existing win2000/IIS v5 server to Windows 2003 and SP1. I have several admin scripts which worked on win2000 servers and a built from the ground up win 2003 server. Specifically: set providerObj = locatorObj.ConnectServer(Server, "root/MicrosoftIISv2", [domain\username], [password]) This line now fails on the UPGRADED box only with an access denied and an event log entry: Access to the root\MicrosoftIISv2 namespace was denied. The namespace is marked with RequiresEncryption but the client connection was attempted with an authentication level below Pkt_Privacy. Re try the connection using Pkt_Privacy authentication level. Questions: How do I mark this as Not RequiresEncryption? Do I want to do this?     - Outgoing mail stuck in Queue folder I'm running Windows 2003 Web edition with POP3 service. I'm trying to configure my server to allow relaying so I made some changes to my access settings. Currently I have Anonymous access, Basic authentication and Integrated Windows Authentication checked. Before I made this change I only have Anonymous checked and was able to send and receive email from only with the same domain. Since the changes though I cannot receive email. All emails get stuck in the Queue folder and never get sent. The event viewer shows Event ID: 4006 "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt". I tried sending to several different domains and they all return the same msg. These domains were all deliverable before I made the change. Any suggestions? Currently I'm writing functionality to allow clients to register their (UZI) client certificate for access to our website. I have configured IIS to accept client certificates and to require SSL. If the user selects a valid certificate "register.aspx" will be displayed (allowing the user to register its certificate). Moreover, if the user selects cancel, "register.aspx" will be displayed as well (and notifies that a client certificate should be selected). However, if the user selects an invalid certificate, the user is redirected to a page not found (Cannot find server or DNS Error). The ASP.NET ISAPI filter isn't even hit, so the solution should be within IIS. What I want, is to explain the user that he has selected a wrong certificate, should close IE (to clear certificate cache) and that he should try again. The Page not found message is not useful at all. I'm am not an (IIS) administrator, so could you be so kind to explain me how to alter this message or how to reconfigure IIS allows the invalid certificate so I can handle the Invalid certificate message from ASP.NET myself?     - FTP idle connections I am running an FTP server. The site is limited to 5 connections. Only one user uses this FTP site. Periodically, all 5 connections are taken and the user cannot connect. When I view the current sessions, I see that the connections are many hours old. The connection timeout is set to 120 seconds. Why isn't IIS disconnecting the inactive user?     - Website Logon Issues I have set up my website to require logons to local user accounts. I have several users who cannot logon from their pc's. I have tested the user ID's and passwords from other computers and had no problems. The server is Windows 2000 and IIS 5. The workstations are Windows XP with a mix of home and professional. The server authentication is set for Basic. All users access the site via Windows Explorer. I am wondering if it could be a setting in IE, but not sure which settings to check. When deploying on a low privilege system this error may show up because the anonymous or impersonated user may not have access to the registry.     - Possible problem with referer code Hi, I'm using a script that send data (after encryption) to another web server, the server uses the same encryption key and de-crypts the contents of the query string. It also checks to see which website has referred the data, it appears that on some peoples computer's the referrer variable isn't coming through, therefore these people are having their access denied.     - IIS6 kanji URLs become unreadable We are using IIS to publish some directories on our file server for users to access. A large number of directories use double-byte directory/filenames... Under Windows 2000, these would display correctly, including, if you went into a subdirectory, in the address bar. However, since re-building the server with Windows 2003 (w. SP1) we are discovering that when we go into the same said directories, the address bar becomes mojibake (japanese for unreadable) and the URL becomes much longer. I am assuming that this is due to IIS turning the double-byte characters into 2 percentile characters each. To illustrate, a directory that looks like this on the server: d:\Public\IT Manuals\~ä¹?å·?äº?å??æ??ã?§ becomes, in the address bar http://tktest03/public/IT%20Manuals/%7E%E4%B9%9D%E5%B7%9E%E4%BA%8B%E5%8B%99%E6%89%80%E3%81%A7/ A lot of our users copy and paste the URLs to each other in emails, and while the above example is rather short, most URLs become nightmarishly long. The URLs usually get so long that the mail systems/readers truncate such long URLs into various bits, making it near impossible for an ordinary user to piece together again. I have tried adjusting things like the EnableNonUTF8 value to see if that fixes the problem, but it only appears to fix the input to IIS of such characters. I need to find a way to get IIS to hand out the URLs the way they really look. I do realise this is bad security and potentially opens up the IIS security, but it's an internal staff-only server and this functionality is rather critical. Any pointers appreciated.     - SSL key not registering I have several Web sites hosted on a SBS 2003 with ISA installed, so far well configured and running. Two of these Web sites have a different public and local IP address because they each have their own SSL key on the default port (443). Only way to have this working on the same box, is to do that, or so it seems. I succesfully used HTTPCFG to register the local IP addresses for iplisten and SSL. I deactivated the Web sites and removed the settings for these two specific IP address when I had an earlier problem that is now fixed (turned out the problem came from the firewall box). I used a secondary server, which is soon to go down, as it is 7 years old and about to burst in flames. I reactivated these settings and everything works for each Web site except that one of the Web sites does not support SSL. All the settings are fine as far as what local IP address is used by each Web site, I reviewed all the header settings, but one of the SSL keys does not seem to be registered properly. "httpcfg query ssl" shows the following for the IP address attached to that non-working SSL key: IP: (ipaddress):443 Hash: (empty) Guid : {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} CertStoreName : (null) CertCheckMode : 0 RevocationFreshnessTime: 0 UrlRetrievalTimeout: 0 SslCtlIdentifier: (null) SslCtlStoreName: (null) Flags: 0 Yet, the IP address attached to the working SSL shows all the proper information, except that, and I wonder if this is ok, the Store Name is set to "MY" although it is a public certificate. The SSL key were imported from a NT4 backup file (key manager). I also realize that the same empty hash is given to the ip address attached to the default IP address, the one attached to the other Web sites, although a private IP address is supposed to be generated to make OWA and all the other remote Web tools function.     - Server.CreateObject Failed - 800703e6 Situation is a busy Win2K SP4 shared server running many sites. Recently the linkpoint component (LpiCom_6_0.dll) was installed for a client. After we restart the server or just IIS, we sometimes are getting failures Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 800703e6' Server.CreateObject Failed /systest/linkpoint/test.asp, line 2 800703e6 I have been unable to reproduce the problem on a test box. Every time I check the to see if the component is working after the restart, it has worked. The only time it fails is when I don't remember to test for that quirk after the restart. Which leads me to thinking that the timing of when it is first instantiated is relevant in this case. Can anyone shed some light on this one? The server is currently running Windows 2003 (no service pack). Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, etc are running on this system as well. The server was originally Windows 2000 SP4. Somewhere along the way (during the upgrade or promoting), .NET is messed up. After days of working on this issue, it boils down to this: I have a simple page with one line of html, and the page has an aspx extension. That page will display, ONLY IF it lives in the wwwroot directory.     - IIS 6 WebDav "unable to create folder" error with full permissions Have been trying for a couple weeks now to enable webdav for customers. For some reason when making the web folder shortcut as a client, the account which also has write on it's permissions is, "unable to create a new folder" it is able to create move and move files and folders. Even with full permissions and as an administrator opening the folder and trying to create a new folder doesn't help either. If I create this same folder with frontpage extensions, I'm able to do all actions within Frontpage but not when I open it as just a web folder, then I can't delete a folder. I'm using windows 2003 server with webdav enabled. Also in the IIS Manager properties of the folder read/write is enabled. Any ideas where I can look?     - Loopback check for IIS5 ? I have been using a command line utility much like Unix getfile to get some download times from IIS. I am using IIS5 PWS on Win2k Prof. When I simultanously execute several downloads from IIS, while running on the same machine (127.0.0.1 AND loopback adapter) I see the following consistent behavior. The first 2 requests immediately begin downloading. Other requests are frozen, without even response headers, until the first 2 finish. Its as if they are queued by 2's. I have used the same tool to make requests from an IIS6 box, remotely not through loopback, and do not see this behavior. Any number of requests seem to download concurrently to my machine on an ISP assigned PPP ip address. I have read there was a 'loopback check' in Win2k3 SP1 that behaves somewhat like this. Have I run into a security feature on IIS5? Do all IIS5's limit downloads through the loopback to 2 at a time? What about through the loopback on IIS6? I would appreciate any help.     - Issues with Root Certificate Authority Service Hi All, First time install/use attempt of CA services on a Windows 2K3 server in a Windows 2000 Domain, with a mix of Windows 2000 and Windows 2k3 servers. We're trying to get a CA authority up for the sole purpose of issuing e-mail certificates. We don't need to secure web traffic yet. I am not a Domain or Enterprise Admin, so I do have some limits, I am a Server Operator and Exchange Admin, and I am listed as a Local Admin on several servers. The target system for CA Install is one of them. Installation on the server was painless; installed Root CA as I could not do an Enterprise CA. Navigated to website to attempt CA install (already have auto-accept set on the CA server) and requested a certificate, but the install fails everytime with this message: Your certificate request was denied. Your Request Id is X. The disposition message is "Error Constructing or Publishing Certificate". Contact your administrator for further information. Is there some requirement for setting this up that I am missing? I just want a website spitting out certficates for our e-mail users; that's it.     - Log Files and New Server I am upgrading from NT 4.0 to 2003 Server. Currently on the NT 4.0 server I have our company Intranet site. This site will migrate to the new 2003 server. My question is in regards to the IIS log files. Can I move them from the NT 4 server to the 2003 Server and just place them in the corresponding W3svc folder on the new server? I got this error "Unable to collect data. Error = -2147481643(800007d5)" when
I run the wcctl -a server -c test.cfg -s test.scr -p test.pfc -n servername.

I think it is due to lock of permission to run perfmon remotely. I change
the "Performance Logs and Alerts" to service account according to the Q240389.

I still got the same error when I run wcctl. I was able to collect the data
using the Microsoft Perfmon.msc for the remote computer.

Anyone has any idea why? How can I fixed the permission problem?
