    - IIS Admin Shutting Down I am running Exchange Server 2000 on my only Windows 2000 DC, and utilizing Outlook Web Access, as well as POP, IMAP and MAPI. It also hosts an FTP site. Over the weekend, it rendered itself useless, twice, because the IIS Admin Service shut down unexpectedly : ************************************** Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7031 Date: 9/20/2004 Time: 4:25:35 AM User: N/A Computer: KTEXCHANGE Description: The IIS Admin Service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action. *********************************** When this happens, it shuts down all the Exchange Services, SMTP and FTP because they are listed as dependencies. I have been researching this all morning, but have not found a satisfactory answer - most reasons state that it fixed by Service pack 2 or 3 - I am on SP 4. Another talks about a known "bug" but refers to the contents of the "crash dump". (It doesn't crash, it just shuts down - I can restart all the services "after the fact" manually, without rebooting) I have (honestly) not made any changes for months. I have instituted a "workaround" to restart the services, or reboot, if the service fails again, but I would be more comfortable finding a "solid" reason.     - OWA 2003 / IIS 6.0 - Error 404 opening attachments Suspect this is an IIS 6.0 issue, but not sure. Sorry, it's a bit long-winded. We are customising OWA 2003 an have an ISAPI extension to perform some message processing. The ISAPI extension is the first one in the list, above davex. When composing a message and clicking on the attachment url in the attach dialog, or the compose message form, or when clicking on the attachment url in a received message, I get error 404, "page cannot be found", file or directory not found. The W3SVC logs show status, substatus and win2k status as "404 0 3", which through "net helpmsg 3" indicates "path not found". The Event Viewer shows no related errors. Our ISAPI extension calls a logging function at the very first statement in HttpExtensionProc( ) and this shows no logging whatsoever when the attachment URL is clicked, but shows plenty of logging for other operations such as sending a composed message or opening a received message. Also, interestingly, if I connect to the Exchange mailbox using the Outlook client, the attachments are present and viewable, so they have been created correctly (I assume). I have also done a comparison of the attachment URLs on OWA with and without our extensions installed, and the URLs appear to be identical. Also, if I remove our extension from the "wildcard application map" in the virtual directory Application Configuration/Mappings dialog in IIS Manager, the attachment URLs work fine. So, the bottom line is that our ISAPI extension breaks OWA attachment URLs, but never gets called when the URL is clicked. Take it out and everything works fine. I have seen references to IIS 6.0 only allowing registered MIME types to be served up, but one of the attachments is called "temp.txt" and '.txt' is a registered MIME type and it still doesn't work Incidentally, to give an idea, the attachment URL in one of the received messages is http://localhost/exchange/Administrator/Inbox/att2.EML/temp.txt. If I paste the URL into IE and chop off the "/temp.txt", it has no trouble opening and displaying the .eml mail message, so that much of the path is OK.     - Problem with App path I have a simple asp app on a W2K server and am having trouble creating the application path. The app sits in ..inetpub\wwroot\MyApp. There is a folder called _support under \MyApp\ that has some include files. The inc file are referenced in an asp file on the root of \MyApp\. I've made the \MyApp\ directory an application in inetmgr and the properties say the app path is <web root>\MyApp. The problem is the asp code still sees the application root as wwroot instead of wwroot\MyApp. So the asp code that calls the include files in \_support returns a server error 500. If I modify the asp to include the path \MyaApp\_support then everything works. I thought making a directory an application in inetmgr would make that directory (MyApp) the root of the app? How can I make MyApp be the root of the app. We don't want to have to modify the paths in all the asp code and it doesn't seem like a best practice.     - All IIS services stopping unexpectedly. HI, Lat week I noticed my web sites were down. I logged into my W2k3 server and in IIS noticed that FTP, WEB and SMTP all were stopped. I went into event viewer and all I could find were messages that read "The IIS admin service terminated unexpecttedly. It has done this x time(s)." Then it read to run the configured recovery program. I also see the same message but with FTP publishing service and SMTP service. It has happened again this morning. There is nothing else identifying what might be causing this. Has anyone else encountered this and are there any suggestions on where to start looking?     - HTTP 401.3 error: Please help - Urgent. Hello, I have a site which uses Basic Authentication. The site authenticates only me and others who are among the 'Administrators' group in the server. All other users get the HTTP 401.3 Access denied by ACL on resource error!! No changes was made to the folder permissions recently and the only thing that happened before the site broke down was that several critical windows updates were pushed by our network admin and the webserver rebooted. I downloaded the AuthDiag tool and tried to use the Check Authentication task but it always gives me "URL entered is invalid" error!!! I enter the complete URL to that site..like...http://www.###.com/ab/cd/foldername/index.cfm I can access the URL from my browser as I am an administrator on the server. If I try to access the URL from a common user's browser...I get the login prompt and even if user enters the right login information it gives the 401.3 error. Since it is a https site and requires basic authentication, I guess the AuthDiag tool could not get in with whatever account that it uses to authenticate in. Does this have anything to do with the IUSR_Machinename account? I believe that pushing Microsoft updates alone cannot mess up anything in a server but is it possible that once the updates are installed and the server is rebooted, the ACLs and/or windows accounts (especially IUSR_) did not get set up properly? I tried to investigate further on the IUSR_Machinename account and this is what I found: I used the following VBS code to find out what the IUSR_machinename and IWAM_machinename account passwords were and I was surprised to see that the code returned a password for IWAM account BUT NOT the IUSR account!!! It was empty! Is this possible?     - 6.0 SSL and WebDAV I've got two directories: whatever.com/ whatever.com/webdav/ I require SSL on the root directory and it works fine, but it seems to have broken WebDAV. I have given myself full rights to relay through our SMTP server by the IP address of my machine, and have it set to "allow anonymous access". Any ideas where the problem might be? Everytime I get onto my internet explorer I get a message stating that microsoft Internet exploroer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvienence. I get this everytime I get onto iexplorer. It always gives me the option to send a report and restart iexplorer, but I found that if I just lower the error window down below the screen I can still use iexplorer without any problems.     - Protecting Access Databases Greetings, I am at a loss on what seeting I need in IIS to secure an Access Database so it can not be downloaded by any user but still be accessed by all users. By accessed I mean through the web application. In other words, I do not expect my ASP script to continue running until the entire response buffer has been sent to the client. It appears that this is no longer the case under IIS 6.0. The interesting result is that Flush took almost no time to execute on IIS 6.0 and it took nearly 6 seconds on IIS 5.0. The 6 second result is expected if Flush is a synchronous operation since that's about how long it took to receive the page in my browser from both of the servers. The only explanation for the 0 second result on the 6.0 server is that Response.Flush is behaving asynchronously on that server. While I'm sure that asynchronous flushes would be desirable for many applications, it is highly undesirable for mine. I won't make this post any longer explaining why (unless someone really wants to know), just trust that I have a good reason.     - First request to ASP.NET application completely hangs Windows 2003 Server Hello, I have very strange problem - first request to ANY ASP.NET application hangs completely W2003 Server. The server freeezes in unusual way - I cannot start ANY new process (or stop), processor utilization is very low (~2-3 %). Thi happens only during request to ASP.NET application. STatic HTML and .ASP applications work fine. Complete reinstallation of IIS did not help. After installing .NET 2.0 Beta - result is the same. It seems to be problem in .NET, not IIS, but it only manifests in ASP.NET application. I receive ths behavior on 2 systems - one is development server and it happened after 4 months of hard work, but the same effect is on production server with PURE installation and another set of ASP. NET application (just one simple app.) The problem started ~4 weeks ago after one of critical updates install. It seems quite serious, I have no idea, especially that the problem seems to go deep into internals, in fact there is no possibility to start any process, so it looks like deadlock at the kernel level.     - Constantly uploading Pleas help me!!!! I know almost nothing about uploading and downloading from the net. My problem is I am constantly uploading (bytes sent/received) when i am connected to the net, to the point where i struggle to even access my usual pages.     - configuring Internet info server thanks Bruce; you got me a little closer;(your reply) The solution to this is to use MMC snap-in for IIS to configure the web site and edit the 'default web site' properties. The execute permissions can be found under the 'Home Directory' tab where you can select 'Scipts only' as this is sufficient for the introduction page in IIS.     - Using Virtual Directories across web sites. I have a need to use/share the contents of a single directory ("virtualdirectory") on 2 separate web sites: http://myweb1.mydomain1.com/virtualdirectory and http://myweb2.mydomain1.com/virtualdirectory Both sites are being hosted on the same Windows Server 2003 with FrontPage Extensions and have seperate Home directories. I've found that only myweb1 can see the virtual directory from FrontPage. I believe this is because only site can control the FP Extensions. Does anyone know the best way to accoomplish this? Thanks.     - Timeout problem I have some webpapes that are timing out after a very short period of time. I have looked online and it said to look in the event viewer for pool problems.     - IIS 5, Front page & Publishing problems Normally I don't publish to my website as I just change the files as needed. Now I want to publish from my pc to my server, on the same subnet, using FP XP. Every time I try to publish changes to my website I get the popup box message: The folder, \\server\domain is contained by a server-based Web. To access this web you must use the http:// url for the web server. I have tried that and get this message box: Unable to open "http://www.mydomain.org" Server error: Could not find a web server at 'www.mydomain.org' .....etc. I do have a web presence on the net and have checked the FP Extensions with a strange message on that. When checking the Extensions I first get a box that says: The server administration program and the server extensions on the web server are not compatible.     - Can't access RWW on sbs20032 from internet. Hi, I am having major trouble accessing RWW or any page from my server from the internet. I have gone through the setting a million times and can't find anything that pops out. I have a feeling it could be a dns issue or something like that. I can access rww from internal and everything works great but not from the outside...I have even put the server in the DMZ to rule out any bad firewall rules.     - Locating Files On My server I want to find files on my server in the office so i can access them on my home pc. I have set up permissions on the server (Small Business Server 2000) and can log in, but i cant find my files on the hard drive.     - ASP with SBS-2003: slower with each page-call Hello! My ASP-project works fine on a XP-System. Now I transfered the project to a SBS-2003 and the access is slower and slower with each call of a page, until a page needs up to 2 Minutes to open, when it access the mdb (Driver: Microsoft Access Driver .mdb, ADODB.Connection). In this situation the Servers bores itself (works with 3 percent). The problem is only when accessing the mdb - the ASP-pages without mdb are called fast. When I restart the IIS, all is OK - for 1 to 2 hours. I have checked, that the mdb-object is closed on every page and set to nothing. The Anti-Virus software can't be the problem (its the same without AV). In the log-files I found no errors. Summary: ASP/IIS + XP = OK. ASP/IIS + Server = slower and slower. Is there any big difference between IIS on XP and IIS on SBS-2003, or any lock-situation when I work with mdb? Has anyone a reference, where I can search for a solution of this problem?     - Webserver / IIS configuration Hi! I'm working with setting up my own webserver (first time), but got a problem: The webpage is not found / cannot be displayed. I have installed Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition, and IIS 6. I think the problem has to to with the IIS configuration. I want to run multiple sites on my IIS Server. Here is how I have configured IIS: 1. First I right-clicked on "web sites" and choosed "new" 2. I wrote a description, and in IP address I kept the default value "All unassigned". TCP port = 80 and Host Header = my domain name (ex: mysite.com) 3. Then I browsed to the folder where my website is stored. "Allow anonymous access......" is choosed. Then Finish. The DNS info is updated and points to my webservers IP address. I thougt this would be it, and the webserver should work. But I only get the message "The page cannot be displayed" when I type the URL in my browser. Have I forgot something, or have I done something terrible wrong?? Please help me!!!     - Installed Internet Information Services 5.1 on XP Pro but no Admin? I can run the .asp files stored in inetpub/wwwroot in my browser using localhost/somefile.asp, so my IIS is installed and responding, but I have no administration interface??? I right click on My Computer and choose administer but I don't see IIS admin? When I open mmc and try to install a new snap-in I'm unable to find IIS admin.     - Problem With FreeAspUpload Can anyone help please? If this is not the right place to log my question can someone advise where to send it. I am trying to use FreeAspUpload script (http://www.freeaspupload.net) and cannot get it to run correctly. Can anyone help. I have changed the required variable in the test script but when I run it, after I have selected a file to upload from the web page, the File Download box appears and it is forcing me to download the asp page that I am running to somewhere I select. SO instead of uploading a file I select to a preset location it is trying to download a file I haven't selected to a location I can choose.     - security problem when accessing restricted page Hi, i have a IIS 6 on Windows 2003. On one of the websites i host, they have one ASP they use for entering data. They wanted to secure that one page. So i made a user with a password, then in the Windows Explorer on the security settings of that ASP i removed the IIS_USER and added the newly created user with read and execute access. So far so good, it worked for months. Now, from one day on another they can't login anymore. Strange enough, their "master" account, i.e. the account they use for ftp-upload of the complete site, is still allowed access. So i thought it was something with that user. I first removed his rights on that page and put them back, but that didn't help. I then completely deleted that user and re-created it, but that didn't help either. Then i created a completely new user, with a completely different name, and gave him the rights on that page. No access. Then i made a testpage on my own website, gave those two new users permission on it and removed the anonymous user, but i could't get access. Then i thought: let's try that "master" account on my testpage, and when i added it to the security settings for the page, and tried to open the page, it wouldn't work either. So i'm kind of stuck with the fact that the pages that are already secured still remain, but that i can't add new users to them. The only thing that changed a.f.a.i. know are the updates that i installed through Windows Update. Could there be a problem with that? i.e. that one of the updates changed a setting? Any ideas? I need some help

I cannot seem to get IIS6 To allow a virtual directory if it is connetced to
a UNC that is on a samba server. It allows me to set it up but it does not
work. The same setup works just fine is IIS5.

Has anyone gotten this to work?
