Disable COM in IIS
Hello,
Here is a thing. I been trying to figure this out for a while now and can't seem to find any documentations on this issues.
I am trying to host multile websites using IIS 5.0. When I do I am creating IUSR_ accounts for each web site and regular user to administer that site. Now for example, I have two web sites, Site1 and Site2 with IUSR_Site1 and IUSR_Site2 and User1 and User2. Only IUSR_Site1 has access to Site1 as anonymous user and same applies to Site2.
Now here is the real problem, I have different components installed on the server to send emails, upload files, DB components like ADO, etc. I only want to give access to perticular site/user access to use that. So I tried that with ADO. But when I gave access to IUSR_Site1 but not IUSR_Site2 it worked fine as long as IUSR_Site1 doesn't access that component. But as soon as IUSR_Site1 accesses that component IUSR_Site2 has access to it too. Any idea why it is doing this... Is that a bug or I am missing something here!!!
Thanks

IIS6 Port change does not work
After changeing the port for web access from port 80 to

Service Unavailable
Two related questions, related to a brand new
Win2003/IIS6 system (no significant content yet).
I was trying to move the default web root from
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot to D:\Inetpub\wwwroot. In the
process, something got mucked up.
The problem I'm seeing is that every time I try to hit
the web site (any page), I get back a "Service
Unavailable" page (no error message--that's the whole
page). The Event log shows several entries like:
Source: W3SVC-WP
Event ID: 2269
"The worker process failed to initialize the http.sys
communication or the w3svc communication layer and
therefore could not be started. The data field contains
the error number."
I have tried various config changes to the web server and
root, but no avail. I have re-installed IIS. Nothing.
First question is, what's wrong?
Second question is, is there a document that describes
moving the web root (as described earlier) to avoid these
issues?

IIS 6.0 with networked Virtual Directory
Plain and simple, I made a virtual directory. Gave it the Alias "Images",
gave it the Path "//xx.xx.xx.xx/data/Images" and put in a
Username/Password that existed on the file server (but not the local).
Great, in the IIS Manager the "Images" virtual directory shows all the
stuff in that shared directory.
However, when I go to the URL http://website/Images/ I get a:
HTTP Error 500 - Internal server error.
With no other details. Not in the event log, not in the website log. This
is with those friendly errors turned off in the browser.
Doesn't matter if I refer to a file directly, or just try to browse (which
is enabled), I get this 500 error.
Any ideas?

SMTP virtual server failing to send email
Hi,
I have a specific web service on the Internet which requires to send
an email out to Internet email addresses. I have installed IIS SMTP
service on the same W2K server hoping that it would "relay" the SMTP
email created on the web application out to the Internet destinined
for the recipient. Unfortunately this is failing to send anything out.
The single server is located on a DMZ and has access rules though the
firewall and router permitting outward DNS & SMTP and inward HTTP &
HTTPS connections.
The web service (not IIS) is fully accessible. I can use nslookup on
the server to query external DNS servers to get MX addresses from
domains. I can also Telnet to these addresses on port 25(SMTP) and
then manually craft a valid external email which is delivered. So I
am happy that the router/firewall configurations are working fine.
If I use Outlook on the same server to create an email, sending it to
the IIS service on the same server, it is accepted and Outlook is
happy. However the email simply remains in the IIS SMTP QUEUE
folder, and after a while some non-delivery warnings appear in the
queue. I don't want any inward SMTP from the Internet to arrive at
this server, and all non-delivery notifications etc. are to be sent to
another IP domain via another Internet connection which has a fully
working in and out SMTP service.
I was hoping that IIS's SMTP service would do the external MX lookup
and establish a direct SMTP connection with the recipients IP domain
mail server(s), but it' not :( I did try setting up a "REMOTE
domain" in IIS for *.co.uk but test emails to this domain were still
queued.
I know there is an option to specify a "smart host" to relay SMTP
emails to, but I don't want to pass this to an external SMPT relay and
I would prefer that this single server was a "smart host" and actually
sent the email.
Questions:
1. can IIS SMTP server take SMTP email from an application the same
server and then connect directl;y out to the Internet to send it on to
the recipient's mail server ?
2. If it can, anyone got any ideas what may be wrong, or anthing I
should be checking ? (The logs only show the SMTP sevice accepting
the emails with no sign of any attempts to send it)
3. If IIS can't do this, can anyone suggest a simple product that
could ?
TIA

Now available - MMC tool for administering IIS 6 from Windows XP
Bernard already posted on this but I want to make sure word gets out widely
because this has been a much requested item for IIS 6. Yesterday, we
released IIS 6.0 Manager for Windows XP Professional to the download servers
at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f9c1fb79-c903-4842-9f6c-9db93643fdb7&DisplayLang=en
This is an MMC snap-in for Windows XP Pro that allows you to administer IIS
6 remotely from your XP desktop. Note that it doesn't install the IIS
server on your XP machine. Also, you don't need to install IIS 5.1 to use
the tool unless you also need to administer SMTP or NNTP.
The IIS team worked very hard to make this tool available and it's great to
see this ship.

IIS 5.0 Upload Limit
I have an an asp page that uploads files using AspSimpleUpload. This page has worked great for months to upload PDF''s, Images, or other files. However, all of these files have been under 1 MB. I have discovered recently, that if I try to upload a file bigger than 1 MB, the site locks up and the upload never completes.
This should not be a speed issue because the server is on my local network.
I thought I read once that IIS has a 1 MB post limit by default. I don''t know if that is correct, but if so, how can I make it larger? I know in IIS 6.0, you can just go into the metabase.xml file to change setting, but that file does not exist for IIS 5.0.

IIS Admin: big troubles
Hello,
my company runs IIS4 on NT4 sp6a.
After a big server crash and consequent no-boot-problem, I brought it back
to life by reinstalling the OS into a new hard-disk (sp6a and some post-sp
fixes and patches too), then copying "brutally" almost everything (hey, I
said "almost", huh?) into the old "C" drive. I could not reinstall it all
over because also SQLServer and Exchange Server co-exist on the same machine
... after all, this has been working damn good for almost 6 years so far;
thinking about a new installation simply drove me crazy.
Well, apart of this, I have now some administration troubles with IIS.
Although I can run the IIS Admin Service Manager from my browser and make
modifications on the already existing domains, I cannot add new domains
because I always get a message telling me that the name I have specified
already exists (this is not true, of course).
I can not use the MMC-based Internet Service Manager because it says that
the snap-in fails to initialize.
Any clues? (We have to add about 25 new domains within this week ...)
Thanks for the patience to read and understand my poor english.
