Unable to create FP Server Extensions 2002 subwebs

I am logged in as admin to my very own Windows 2003 server. I have Front Page
Server Extensions 2002 installed. I also have a number of Extensions 2002
subwebs that I created in the past. In the present, however, when I try to
create new Extensions subwebs, I always get the following error:

Unable to access configuration for Microsoft Internet Information Server.

I tried to play with roles.ini file, checked and rechecked every possible
permission setting I could think of, and tried the technique described in KBB
314480. Nothing helps. The only thing I can do is create the subweb as
Extensions *2000*, and then manually tweak the subfolders' permissions, etc.
Not at all ideal, as that way I can't deploy projects from VisualStudio .NET
using FrontPage.

I've searched far and wide before posting this, so help is sincerely
appreciated!

All right, it looks like there will be no response. To the folks having the
same problem, here's what I discovered in the meantime. I noticed that IIS
worker process is running under "Network Service" identity. I suspected that
it's that identity that's lacking privilege to change the IIS configuration.
I then added Network Service to the Administrators group, restarted IIS, and
the problem was solved.

What is not clear to me is wether giving Network Service admin privileges is
a security breach. If anyone could comment on this, I'd be very grateful.

Was googling for the answer to another question and came across your post....adding Network Service to the Admin group is a serious security breach. Network Service is the account under which the IIS worker process runs under and is therefore a restricted account.

As to how to fix your problem, I am not at all a frontpage person (despise it), but whenever you need i.e. .NET code to act on a directory (read/write etc.) then add the necessary rights to that directory only. Remove from your Admin group.
