Setting up FTP
I using Server 2003 with IIS 6. I am trying to set up two FTP accounts. Under FTP Sites in IIS 6 I have run the FTP setup wizard and created two sites. FTP1 and FTP2. I then ftp into mysite.com with a username of ftp1, I am able to see only my directory and everything works fine. I then ftp into mysite.com with a username of ftp2 and corresponding password. I log in but I don't see the directory for ftp2, I only see the directory for ftp1. How can I change it so the corresponding directory for each? I have tried both the isolation method and non isolation method. Due to my directory structure I would prefer to use the non isolation method.

upgrading web server to windows 2003 and IIS 6.0
I made a mistake when upgrading our windows 2000 web
server to windows 2003. I was prompted that the www
publishing service would be disabled during the upgrade
and went ahead and upgraded the server any way. I have
since found out the disabling was probably due to not
having the IIS 5.0 lock down tool installed. Now that the
server is windows 2003, I don't appear to be able to
install the lock down tool now.
What must I do to get this web server to II6 and windows

Delay in starting IIS
Hello
I have a PIII 600 MHz system with 256 MB RAM
OS: Windows XP Prof Edition
After my system boot up,
when i try to view a page for the first time from localhost, it takes about
2 to 3 minutes to process the page!
after that, everything works fine!
I have IIS 5.1 installed. what could be the problem? I checked the services
immediately after bootup, the IISAdmin service, World Wide Publishing are
set to "automatic" and gets started during startup itself!
then, why there is delay when i try to open a location in localhost for the
first time???
any help would be appreciated!

IIS on Win XP Home Edition???
Hello,
I have Win XP Home Edition on my laptop (machine shipped w/ this OS when I bought it). I've tried looking at the install CD hoping to install IIS as an additional windows component, but didn't find it in the list that appeared.
Is IIS not part of WinXP Home Ed? Any suggestions how I could get this installed on my machine?
I am really hoping to begin tinkering w/ .NET web services and I believe IIS is a requirement for that.

Webgarden\Woker Process\IIS 6.0\Multi-proc server
Correct me if I have this wrong. With webgarden enabled, the IIS worker
process will run on one particular cpu and can have multiple worker
processes to run on multiple CPUs spreading the load evenly among the CPUs.
However, webgarden is disabled by default from the machine.config file, Does
this mean that by leaving webgarden disabled the worker process or processes
not able to take advantage of the multi-processor server and limit it to run
only on a single proc leaving the other proc idled?

Perl & CGI on IIS
I'm having trouble running a Perl script on IIS 6.0 (Also on earlier versions). The script runs fine until I get to a page that has a form with a lot of input fields. Then it locks up for several minutes and displays "CGI Timeout. The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process." If I shorten the form (remove some input fields) it works fine. I was previously running on IIS 5.0 on a Windows 2000 server and it worked until a couple of days ago. The application works fine on Windows XP Professional (running IIS 5.1 I believe). I'm curious as to why it stopped working recently and why it seems to work on the XP Professional machine. Can't debug Web Service - IIS Change URL to Upper Case
Hi,
I don't know where this question should post to, hopefully this is the right one. This problem has struggled me for a long time now and has prevented me from debugging any of my .net web service, so any help is VERY VERY APPREPCIATED!!!
My problem is that whenever I click a link to a site in my localhost, the URL is changed to all uppercase. For example, when I'm in <<http://localhost/WebService1/Service1.asmx>> and click on a web method, the URL becomes <<http://localhost/WebService1/SERVICE1.ASMX?op=createCustomer>> and after I enter parameters and click "Invoke", the URL becomes <<http://localhost/WEBSERVICE1/SERVICE1.ASMX/createCustomer>> and I get "Page cannot display" error. This happens to all my .net web services and all web methods, so I'm sure that it's not problem of my web method.
Also, if I browse my virtual folders and click on a file, the URL will become all upper case (all partially upper case). Since case doesn't matter in this scenerio, there is no error.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!! Tag: Test - Please ignore Tag: 336888
Cannot create folder "_vti_pvt"
Hi gang,
I'm trying to create a new website. Here is my procedure
1) create the folder
2) In IIS I right click the server and select "New->site"
3) I create a new site and point it at the newly created directory
everything seems OK at this point
4) I then right click the new site and select "all tasks->configure
server extenstions"
I then work by way through the "Server extensions Configuration"
wizard
I take the defaults for "group names", and the web administrator group
(Administrators). I specify that I will defer configuring mail server
settings and click "finish".
the wizard issues the following error: "Cannot create folder _vti_pvt"
can anyone suggest how to resolve this?
thanks!

IIS 6 - Multiple IP's & Multiple SSL
We have a 2003 Server running IIS that we'd like to be able to run multiple
websites on but each site requires it's own SSL - so from what I've read -
each site also requires a unique IP. From what we understand, we cannot use
host headers.
I have a several IP's bound to the same nic and they all show up in the IIS
and are able to select them in the properties for each site. None of the
sites have "all unassigned' chosen. However only the first site (which is
bound to the actual IP of the nic) seems to work. The others are either
redirected to the first site somehow or don't return anything at all.
Do you have any tips or tricks for me? Or is this not possible at all?

Getting hit by numerous POST /spipe/pkg requests
Hello all,
About a week ago, our web servers started getting hit with POST /spipe/pkg
requests from a single IP address. The requests were coming on an order of
100K per day. We cut off the offending IP address at the firewall level,
but now we're seeing it from multiple IP addresses. I have not been able to
find anything on Google or any of the Security web sites about a virus or
worm that might be causing this. The only mention of it in the archives for
this newsgroup is 2 years old and there was no reply.
Is anyone else seeing this and/or have an idea as to what is causing this?
We know for a fact that at least one of the offending IP addresses belongs
to a customer of ours. They are currently checking their systems. I'd love
to be able to tell them where to look.

IIS on 2000 ADV Server with .wml support
Just wondering if anyone has gotten this resolved?? I had seen a post awhile ago and did post to that particular thread but didn't hear anything back. The way I test it is from a Linux box by using this command "lynx -mime_header http://www.test.com/test.wml" and it also returns a result of "Content-Type: text/html" instead of "Content-Type: text/vnd.wap.wml". I have this confiured on a Linux box and when I run the above command I do in fact get the return of the proper content type which is text/vnd.wap.wml.
Any ideas, this seems like it may not be supported in IIS, which wouldn't be very nice at all.......

what exactly is a "web site"?
I hope this doesn't come across as a totally ridiculous question, but
what exactly is a "web site"?
On the face of it, I would have thought that a web site is ONLY
defined as a folder situated directly underneath the "Web Sites" level
in the IIS Manager. Any folder further down the tree is not
technically a web site since it's merely a sub folder or virtual
directory of a bona fida web site.
However, since I can "create" an application at a level further down
the tree (thereby assigning it an application pool), I am now
wondering if the proper definition of a web site is anything running
within an application pool.
I'm just wanting to get my terminology right - my colleagues and I
frequently talk about "web sites" but we don't really know what we
mean by the term "web site". Therefore, I am wondering if there is a
de facto definiton of what a web site is when it comes to IIS 6.0.
Any thoughts? Tag: Test - Please ignore Tag: 336858

a few questions about application pool identities (IIS 6.0)
I have a few questions about application pool identities:
1) Would there be any problem with using Local Service as an
application pool identity? I see it is in the IIS_WPG group so I
presume it will be ok. I don;t want to use Network Service since
that's used in another application pool and I want to keep my two
pools as separate as possible.
2) I notice also that Local System is one of the "predefined" IDs in
the IIS Manager (in the identity tab of application pool properties).
What does it means to be "predefined"? Does it mean that it's a good
choice to use? I would have thought that Local System would be a bad
choice as an application pool identity becuase it's so powerful.
3) Is there anything wrong with using IWAM as the application pool
identity? Again, that's in the IIS_WPG group so I presume it's ok.
Any help would be greatly appreciated Tag: Test - Please ignore Tag: 336847

remote administration of IIS
Hi,
I need my application to create virtual directories on an IIS server that is live on the internet.
How can I administer a remote IIS server with .net ?
Also I need to have some security mechanism for accessing the IIS server through code. The server is an IIS 6.0 on a Win 2003 server box.
I tried using DirectoryEntry class, but it gives the error "The RPC Server is Unavailable", though the server iis is running.
I find that I cannot use a webservice as the permission set for a webservice seems insufficient to create a virtual directory.
Also I gather that http channel remoting might not work from behing authenticated proxies and a firewall.

SMTP Relay Problem
Running Win 2000 Server as a standalone with POP3
mailboxes, I am getting spammers relaying thru the smtp
virtual server, even though I have restricted Relay
Access by selecting the radio button "Only the List
Below", with no computers listed, and have checked the
box "Allow all computers that successfully authenticate
to relay". Authentication Access has "Anonymous Access"
and "Integrated Windows Authentication" checked. (I tried
unchecking Anonymous Access but that does not stop the
unauthorized relay.) It almost seems to me that the
spammers are somehow authenticating on this server. Any
ideas as to how the spammers are accomplishing the relay
and what can be done to stop it. So far, my only remedy
has been to stop the smtp virtual server, which of course
renders my email system inoperable. Tag: Test - Please ignore Tag: 336833

hung requests
I enabled the IIS crash hang agent on our shared Windows 2000 web server in
the hopes it would help me understand a situation that frequently occurs
with respect to what I see in the performance monitor graph. And it has
worked to the point of showing me which scripts are the ones having
problems.
Basically, there will be several ASP requests executing and several queued
and they stay that way until I restart IIS. For instance, looking at a hang
log with a timestamp of 03:24 GMT, there are requests in an executing state
since from yesterday.

It seems to be some sort of deadlock situation. They have one site doing a
screen scrape from another which is hosted on the same box, same IP, to get
content for the other. I've offered to make a virtual directory they could
use in multiple sites, but the hosting client does not seem interested in
changing code which "works".
Is there anything I can do as administrator to prevent this situation? Or is
there anything I can do to get these unstuck?
Is this something which I should consider a serious misuse of system
resources (like badly written Access queries which peg the CPU until the
script timeout kicks in) and should insist be corrected? Or is it just a
nuisance level item?
One concern I have is that when things are in this state it become
difficult, if not impossible to stop WWW service for an IIS restart. (After
four
tries at stopping the IISadmin server, the out of process DLLHOST is still
refusing to die, WWW service is in a "stopping" state. I'm resorting to
rebooting the box -- which is not an acceptable solution.)

Schedule a iisreset task
Hi,
I created a schedule task to run iisreset, it ran at the schedule time but
there was an error showed in the event log: "7031 IIS Admin Service

It seem that iisadmin was not responed to the iisreset command and got

However, if I run iisreset from the server command prompt, there is no error
at all.
Is it normal to have the error when running iisreset from schedule task?

pros and cons - IIS5 versus IIS6 for a CGI application
We have been asked to provision a web server for a client who has a few
dozen websites running CGI applications (Borland Delphi EXE files), so
I've been trying to determine if there are any compelling factors to choose
IIS 6 versus IIS 5. Or if there are any such reasons to avoid one over the
other.
For instance, if the CGI doesn't do a good job buffering output, I've
learned that IIS 6 may be substantially slower than IIS 5. But process
isolation and better management for misbehaving apps is a plus for IIS 6.
If they intend to use Access in a number of sites (they are converting from
something Borland flavor), the Jet bug supposedly appears in Windows 2003
much more so than Win2K. And there are some FrontPage features (WAIS) which
aren't supported in IIS6.
Can anyone offer advice that will assist us in making this decision?
Thanks.

MS Access 2000/2002 bringing down asp site in 2003 Server
I posted the following message and an MS rep replied quickly with the
response after it.
But the response referred me to a telephone list to call about a beta
hotfix.
The telephone list was all paid support numbers and I can't afford that.
The beta hotfix does not seem to be published anywhere at microsoft.com.
I realize the MS rep did not promise the beta hotfix would be there.
In fact his message below led me to believe the only way I could get it
would be to call someone.
This problem is still bringing down my apps.
I've had to tell the application pools to refresh three times a day and I'd
prefer not to have to do that.
I'm running 2 gig of RAM on this box so it is easy to put each of these apps
into separate application pools without running out of memory. Has anyone
else had the problem below and found a better way of dealing with it?
And to the kind MS Rep who helped me:
Has this hotfix gone past beta yet or do I need to wait for SP1 for 2003
Server?
If so, when is SP1 anticipated to come out?
Thanks!
I'm getting no clues in the event log.
I've used the metabase.xml to turn on asp errors getting sent to event log.
Frustrating that these events don't tell me which site... only the file name
and the error.
BUT like I said above, THIS site is showing no asp errors.
So... I have created an application pool just for the offending site that
keeps going down. Luckily, now, it is no longer bringing down my other sites
because of this isolation.
In the app pool I've set it to "recycle" at three different times in the day
and it is still going down.
I have "heavier" database-driven sites, by the way, that are not going down
or needing a recycle or anything.
This box has a gig of RAM so far.
So... does anyone have recommendations how I could try to trace what is
going on?
Another possible clue: The root of this site uses a DSN-less connection to
draw it's content from an MS Access 2002 database. Another part of the site,
in a folder /forum draws it's content from another DSN-less connection to a
different database; MS Access 2000 version. Could this be a problem?
Database driver or resource conflict?
Thanks for any advice you all can give to help me track down this problem!!!
I'm thinking what I'll do in the mean time is separate out the /forum to
another actual site so I can put them each in their own application pool and
maybe that will show which is the offender...

If the web server is running under IIS 6.0 and a form is submitted from a client web browser using the POST method, and if this invokes a process on the server that takes a long time to complete (such as a complex query or if the server is very busy), after about two minutes, the connection between the client and the server will be broken and IIS send something to browser ask it resubmit the form. This will cause a new thread to be created in addition to the thread that is already working on the complex task, thus creating twice the work for the server.
On several occasions I have observed two new threads in addition to the initial one. This problem could be especially dangerous for operations that modify data in the database.
I check the httperr log file, and the post method was logged as error of Timer_EntityBody, I also use Network monitor to monitor the network traffic, the TCP/IP package showed that server reset the connection after timeout and browser post it again after the first timeout. (Not forever, only two or three times)
we could increase the value for "Connection Timeout" in the IIS settings to increase the length of time that elapses before the problem occurs, but it's still leave me a question of why IIS doing this? Is that dangerous ?
BTW, it's only happened with POST method.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Tag: Test - Please ignore Tag: 336782
www service keeps stopping
I have an exchange SVR that is running on 2000. The
World Wide Web Publishing Service keeps stopping
randomly. When this happens Outlook Web Access no longer
works. I can start the service again with no problem,
untill it stops again. It seems to happen 1 - 2 times
per day, but some days it stays up with no problem. Does
anyone have any insight towards a permanent fix for this. Tag: Test - Please ignore Tag: 336778
IIS 6 Network Service Account vs. IIS 5 IWAM_<MachineName>
I have recently moved our company's intranet website from a Windows 2000
server to a Windows 2003 server. Previously, we had setup the permissions
so that the IWAM_<MachineName> account could access files in a share on
another server. Now that I have moved to W2K3, I am not sure what I need to
do to establish the same functionality as the IWAM_ account does not exist.
Can anyone provide me with some good information on this topic or point me
to some good resources?

Login Problem
Setup:
Pentium4/2.4/512MB RAM
Win2003 Web Server/IIS6
ISA Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
Part of my site is private and uses are challenged for a login. Most IE
users receive the challenge and are able to access the private areas of the
site. However, some IE users and most Netscape 7 and 7.1 users don't even
receive the login challenge. Instead, they are receiving the following
error:
"You are not authorized to view this page"
I am wondering if I have something setup improperly in IIS6. Or, is it more
likely that ISA is causing this. When I was running the same site on
NT4with IIS4 users never had this problem.
TIA for any help,
mux

Web Server Idle
I have Windows XP Professional, and am trying to use the web server for
either Frontpage or ColdFusion, but am unable to do so. I originally had
Norton Internet Security Professional 2004 installed which, according to
Norton and Microsoft, was causing the problem. However, I've since then,
purchased a router, and followed ever uninstall article on Nortons site to
uninstall it. Unfortunatly, the web server still doesn't work.
If I try to create a server-based web in FrontPage using
'http:/localhost/[web name]' or 'http://127.0.0.1/[web name], I receive a
popup that reads "Web Server Idle", then, it prompts me for a
default_realm username and password...I have no idea what this would be as
I have never set any passwords on this PC.
If I use my PC name instead of localhost, I get a dialog box that reads
"Can not find a Web server at '[pcname]'. Please check to make sure that
the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly.
If you are sure that everything is correct, the Web server may be
temporarily out of service."
Can anyone help???
Michelle
If I try to view a ColdFusion page, (e.g., the CF Admin program, which is
a web site on my PC) I just get the "page can not be displayed page. Tag: Test - Please ignore Tag: 336758
