IIS 5 stops reponding under moderate load - ISAPI ADO app
I have an ISAPI app on a client's IIS server (W2k, IIS 5, sp4), which, when under load from a number of web users (no more than 40 - but all during the same several hours) IIS stops responding to any request. We have tried to restart IIS and Unload the executable, but the only way to get IIS back up is to reboot the server. Then everthing is fine for the rest of the day. We have another ISAPI app that does not access ADO which has been in use for months on the same server with no problems. It was only when we added the new ISAPI app that accesses a SQLserver via ADO that the problem began
I've checked the logfile log, but no errors are recorded. (just love IIS), no errors in the Event viewer, and nothing is returned to the browser, other than the standard browser timeout message
There was one instance where I saw the hang happen, I restarted IIS - which seem to restart, but still no reponse from IIS, but I did then notice "500 ISAPI out of process" errors in the IIS logfile. I assume that this was caused by IIS being cleared, but some other condition was preventing the ISAPI's to work - maybe the ADO connection??
Thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone might have on this problem

WWWP & SMTP Hangs on Startup
I have Symantec antivirus client and Symantec Firewall
running on a Windows XP machine. I had to disable these
programs to even install IIS. After that, IIS came up
just fine. I rebooted the machine and both The world
wide web publishing and SMTP were hung on starting. I
disabled both the virus programs and rebooted again and
got the same problem. Does anybody know what may be
causing these services to hang or what other diagnostics
I may try? I appreciate any help. I'm running IIS 5.

Setting default page to use .war file
I am setting up a 3rd party application using WebLogic and IIS. They use Java and their default or login screen uses a .war file. I would like to set it up so that when users access the site they don't have to type in the full path name. Where they can just access it by typing in the server name and that will bring up the login screen.
Any help is appreciated.

POP3 collection problems
Hi,
have a win2k3 server box running IIS 6.0, and am having difficulties
configuring the POP3 services. The server mentioned is remote, im looking to
have mail delivered here and distributed to a local mail server running
merak in the office.. however whenever i try to connect i receive
"connection refused" errors. Think its something to do with a recent move
from our old providers to this new server, and the dns records involved. Any
help would be appreciated, as im still new to windows server and email
configuration!

Problem with change password
I have a problem with getting the IIS password changing
tool (ISSADMPWD). Here's the situation.
The server is a Windows 2003 cluster (upgraded from
Windows 2000) running Exchange 2003. The cluster is a
member of a domain with the "primary" domain controller
running Windows 2003 (again, upgraded from Windows 2000)
and the other two domain controllers running Windows
2000. OWA is working normally.
As specified in Q327134 & Q297121, I've created the
virtual directory and set PasswordChangeFlags to 0. The
site has a valid SSL certificate and security is set to
anonymous and basic authentication for just the IISADMPWD
virtual directory.
The problem arrises after the user enters their user
information in aexp2b.asp and clicks on OK. The GetObject
and OpenDSObject return with error -2147024891 (General
access denied error). Even blatently wrong user
information (as long as it passes basic error checking)
returns the error. Clearly it's not accessing the
directory. Perhaps I locked something down on the domain
controller?
Any ideas?

running of a .exe file

I am working on an asp application. I want to run a .exe file using WScript.shell. This is what i did.
1. I created an object WShShell for Wscript.shell

4. In Task Manager, I am able to see the .exe process starting but the process is not stopping.
The code is as follows :
WShShell = Server.CreateObject( "WScript.Shell")
retCode = WShShell.Run ( " C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\CBSHeightPrint.exe",2,true)

Faulting Application w3wp.exe
Hello,
We are receiving intermittent problems with the Windows 2003 IIS 6 worker
process (w3wp.exe) leading to unacceptable periods of downtime on our new
public web server. The user receives a 503 Server Busy error during this
downtime and an IIS restart is usually required to kick things off again.
The Event Viewer logs the application faults and every time we log into the
box through Terminal Service, a 'w3wp.exe failed, do you want to tell M$
about this problem' box appears. I have been advised to run the iisstate
utility to try and find out the process/thread that may be leading to the
fault. w3wp.exe failed earlier today and I have posted the log file that
iisstate generated at http://www.southend.ac.uk/IISState-3228.log.txt.
Does anyone know the best way to take this forward? I read somewhere that M$
let you post these log files to them for analysis, but I can't see them
getting back to us any time soon, even if I did manage to find the right
address to send it to. And the contents mean very little to me!

Multi-Processor bug found in IIS 6
I have posted a similar reply to one of my other threads but i wanted to
make sure this gets to the top for others to read.
Over the past 2 weeks i have been working to identify a problem in IIS 6
where the application would hang for no apparent reason. Every possible
debug tool had been used including IIS Crash Hang Agent, IISState,
Adsutil, asp error logging, etc. No good information came out of the
debug process. The application is a medium traffic website running on a
MS Access 2000 DB. The problem started when the application was moved to
a new server. It had been working fine on a windows 2003 server for over
3 months. Right after we moved to a new server it started to fail. I
tried moving the website to countless other servers until I thought I
discovered the cause to be AMD processors since it always worked on the
Intel servers. After posting again here David Wang suggested it might be
a multi-processor problem. After removing the second processor from the
server and reconfiguring the system driver to use the uni-proecssor
driver i have NOT had a problem since then.
In summary... MS Access + IIS 6 + Multi-Processor Server equals a
failing application. The same application on a single CPU server works
perfectly. I also noticed the problem occurred more the greater the
traffic to the website was. This problem may or may not be noticed on
low traffic websites.
Those of you who are having hangs/crashes might want to consider this a
factor in troubleshooting. Does anyone know if Microsoft is aware of
this bug? If so, will a fix be included in the first service pack?

Problem with viewing ASP pages locally
First I will give some system info.
OS: MS Windows XP Professional
IIS: IIS 5.1
IE: IE 6
It might need noting at this point that my computer hard
drive has two partitions. The C: partition is FAT32 and
18.5 GB, it is used for installing programs mainly. The
D: partition is also FAT32 and 18.5 GB, it is used for
data mainly. The Inetpub directory is on the C: partition.
Basically, my problem is that ASP pages wont run. I
created a test page that I named "index.asp" and put it
in the directory "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot". The contents of
the "index.asp" page is as follows:
---------------CODE-----------------
<%@ Language = "VBScript" %>
<html>
<body>
<% response.write("test") %>
</body>
</html>
----------------CODE----------------
Then I want to run it so I open up IE and
enter "http://localhost/index.asp" into the address bar.
All I get is a blank page with "-2147467259 (0x80004005)"
in the top left. If I look at View>Source it says "<html>-
2147467259 (0x80004005)</body></html>". Occassionally
instead of the above numbers, it says "The RPC server is
unavailable.", but after refreshing it returns to saying
the "-2147467259 (0x80004005)" again.
I have no idea what this problem is but nothing seems to
stop it happening. I have tried re-installing IIS and
still no change.
If anyone can help me I would be most grateful.
Yours,

IIS 4 stops responding
We're running IIS4 on NT4 sp6a. Sporadically, but often (say once every
30-45 min), the IIS service stops responding to browser requests (although
the service shows it is running in the service manager). Quite often, this
lasts for a minute or so and then all is well. However, occasionally, the
web service has to be stopped and restarted before things start working
again. Without fail, if the service is stopped and restarted, things start
working correctly.
We have only the URLScan and SSL ISAPI filters installed (have tested
without them with same problem) and have also tested without our standard
CGI programs (page counters, and the like) installed. Have also removed all
security patches and re-applied sp6a - same deal. We recently removed IIS
entirely, reapplied sp6a, reapplied the Option Pack and patches and have the
same result.
We are running similar configurations on other servers (ii4 on NT4) and have
successfully for many years. We're stumped. Any suggestions/ideas? Tag: Test Tag: 321805

Access Denied
Okay I'm stumped! I have two WS2003 systems - one has AD

Access denied to 'H:\MHT-SCHOOL\'. Failed to start

rapidly turn the server into a vegtable (and before any
cute remarks are made, I've been at this a long time and
turning servers into vegtables is not my trademark).
There is no ASPNET userid as all the KBs seem to inidicate!
Now here's the really interesting part - on the member
server (the same, just not running AD) it works with no
changes!
Ideas welcomed.

Hey Doug
You're not having the same problem. These people are not even getting to
the web server to return and error message. You are getting back an HTTP
error code, coming from the server
If this doesn't fix your problem, please post in a new thread
You should enable scripts and or executables permissions on the site where
you are trying to run this content. do this from the properties of the web
site or virtual directory, then the home directory tab, under the
application settings. The execute permissions is set incorrectly
Try that

IIS 5.1 and 10 concurrent connections
So, obviously now I need more than 10 concurrent connections. They say I can
go ahead and spend the money on doing it. So what does this mean as far as

I mean, do I need to get Windows Server 2003 for a thousand bucks? Is that
an actual operating system? Or can I just get the disk and install IIS 6
like I installed 5.1 with XP Pro?
Can I just buy a copy of it in the store? Do I need to get licenses for for
peole connecting to it (web browsers)? I can't imagine that (I just need the
web server part of it).

FTP Issue with My Network Places
Hello,
I seem to be having an interesting problem with my FTP server. Whenever a
user accesses FTP services by using My Network Places and creating a Network
Place for the server, there is always a failed login before they get in.
The user gets in, but after a few of these, according to security policy the
account is locked out.
Why would creating the network place in Windows XP or 2000 cause a login
failure (and actual client success) on my Win2K IIS server? Anybody else
experienced anything like this?

Allowing access to a hidden copy of cmd.exe
Hi,
I'm developing a publicly accessible Perl CGI
script that needs to run shell commands such as:
my $suggestions = `echo misspelt | aspell.exe -a`;
Perl requires use of cmd.exe in order to execute
this command. On Windows 2003/IIS 6.0 this is
not possible under the default security permissions
since IUSR_<machine> doesn't have read/execute
permission on cmd.exe.
Since it would be a bad idea to grant
IUSR_<machine> read/execute access on cmd.exe
(please correct me if I'm wrong) I was thinking
of making a renamed copy of cmd.exe elsewhere
in the file system and changing the permissions on
the copy. If the copy was renamed then it seems
unlikely that a malicious user could find it
in order to exploit it.
Would this raise any serious security implications.
Thanks,

Multiple Email Copies
We have written a service that runs in the background to deliver email
to our users. The emails are generated from data in SQL that our
application creates. This service sends out thousands of emails
everyday with little or not problem. The code works!
However, we are experiencing an interesting problem. During the
night, we send out reminder emails that have been generated in the
database by overnight processes. This usually amounts to several
hundred or even thousands being delivered in one relatively quick
burst!
This scenario seems to cause the server to send some of the emails
multiple times. Our firewall monitors show the server sending these
multiples but the database (updated by the service) shows an email
only being processed once!
We've checked and re-checked our code (it's pretty simple code,
overall). If the code was sending multiple times, we "should" see
multiple instances in the database (it records the sending of each
individual email immdiately after the sendmail command).
Has anyone else seen this problem before?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Glen Wolinsky

global.asa in dotnet environment
I have a webserver that has both a global.asa and global.asax on the IIS
server. We're running both a dotnet and a traditional ASP application on
that web server.
In the global.asa I set up a session variable for Connectstring that has the
sql login on it, and points to a particular server.
In the global.asax, it actually reads a sql table that has the connectstring
in it. The dotnet application does as screenscrape of the traditional asp
and returns the results. Only thing I've found though, is that the dotnet
application will pull the correct data (from another server), but no matter
what, it seems to "inherit" the connectstring session variable from
global.asa - it'll change if I change it, it'll not run if I take the
connectstring variable out.
Any idea as to how to make the application use the connectstring from the
dotnet global.asax file?

certificates via the web interface. I suspect this is
caused by the auto running of the IIS lockdown utility by
the SUS install. I have attempted to re-run the lockdown
utility to reverse the effects with no luck, I have also
unistalled the IIS lockdown URL scanner with no effect.
I reinstalled the CA server -- no effect
I need to know the steps to take to allow access to my CA
web based issuing of certificates as I use it frequently.

Cannot browse root of vdir located on another server
I've seen posts about this problem before but no solutions - does anyone have a clue about this?
Win2K server running IIS5. Website with no unusual configuration, but has a virtual directory mapped to a share on another
(Win2K) server. Correct login credentials are supplied (both servers are in same NT domain). Directory browsing is enabled, have
tried both with and without default document enabled, no difference.
If I point a web browser to a *subfolder* of my virtual directory (http://sitename/vdir/somesubfolder), I can browse its contents,
access files and subfolders, no problem. If I point my browser to a specific file in the root of the vdir
(http://sitename/vdir/filename.txt) I can access the file. But if I point the browser to the subfolder itself
(http://sitename/vdir/) (I've tried both with and without the trailing backslash), it won't give me the list of files/folders, I
get a 404 error.
Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks in advance!
