ISAPI filter to modify IIS logging
Hi,
We're running IIS6 websites behind a load balancing applicance with W3C
logging enabled. The issue is that for every request logged it displays the
load balancers ip address as the client-ip therefore making it impossible to
determine the source of the request from the logs. The load balancer does
however add the original ip address to an X-Header in the http header. What
we'd like to do is to be able to take this X-Header value and insert it into
the IIS logfiles as the c-ip value. Does anyone know if this is possible
perhaps using an ISAPI filter?
Thanks - J. Tag: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Tag: 404394

ISAPI authentication filter
I have a custom ISAPI auth filter that is set up on ms exchange web
site. I have made some changes and now after the user logs in I get the
user credentials in the url.
So the url is no longer https://hostname/exchange, it is
https://hostname/exchange/?user=usernamevalue&password=passwordvalue&referer=%2Fexchange.
In OnAuthentication event I copy the credentials and that's it.
Does anyone know why are the user credentials in the url ?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Tag: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Tag: 404386

How do you enable download of files with unknown ext, no ext whilst
Hi,
I'm trying to set up an Internal HTTP File Share with IIS 6.0 on
Win2K3SP1, but I can't figure out how to enable the IIS server to
return files with no extensions as well as files with unknown
extensions whilst allowing known file types, html, txt etc, to be
returned with the correct mime type.
If I add mime mapping "." -> application/octet-stream I can download
files with no extension, known files get returned with the correct
mime type, but I can't download files with unknown extension e.g.
foo.bar.
If I add mime mapping ".*" -> application/octet-stream I can download
files with no and unknown extensions, but valid extensions are also
returned as application/octet-stream, making it impossible to read
html files and txt files in the browser (other than IE that actually
inspects the contents of the file).
Is it impossible to configure IIS 6.0 to allow for these 3 rules?
1. Files with no extension must be returned as application/octet-
stream
2. Files with unknown extensions must be returned as application/octet-
stream
3. Files with known extension must be returned with the corresponding
mime type.
Cheers

Capturing a specific IP
Is there a way with IIS 6 to redirect an incoming request if it is from a
specific IP address? I don't want to block it as such, I want to make it
direct to an website for 'banned' IPs.
The server hosts around 30 sites, but we have two or three persistent
fixed IPs that come in that we would like to intercept and point
elsewhere.
Is there an easy way to do this, or am I going to have to install scripts
in all sites to do it?

2000 Server IIS Admin service unresponsive
Iâ??ve got a problem on a 2000 server. Itâ??s the DC with Exchange 2000, File &
Print, Backup Exec, Symantec Antivirus Server and Citrix Secure Gateway
Secure Ticket Authority installed.
Whatâ??s happening is that every weekend at differing times over the last few
weeks, the www and exchange services have all stopped working. They show as
started in the services console but are unresponsive if I try to restart
them. I think that this may be to do with the IIS Admin service as this
controls both the Exchange and www services. Iâ??ve been getting around it by
restarting the server every Monday which gets it going again and itâ??s fine
all week.
Do you have any ideas as to possible causes or steps I can take to find out
whatâ??s causing this? Iâ??ve checked the Event logs and thereâ??s nothing logged
at the times when the services stop working. Tag: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Tag: 404353
IIS OK from public IP but refusing requests from internal network
My website is hosted on a W2K3 server.
It is accessible from any public IP address (internet).
However, it is not accessible from any private IP address (internal
network).
The configuration is as follows:
Client 192.168.0.101
Server 192.168.0.11
My network is connected to the internet via a dedicated T1 link.
My hardware firewall routes port 80 traffic from internet to the IIS Server
at 192.168.0.11.
My site works fine from any internet IP address.
However, my site can not be accessed from any computer on the internal
network.
HTTP://192.168.0.11 or http://mycompanywebsite.com fails.
http://127.0.0.1 also fails on the IIS server box.
The IIS log indicates that the request was received but it logs 404 0 2
error.
(Denied dud to LOCKDOWN policy)
I have no IP address restrictions on this website.
Why is IIS denying requests from users on the internal network with 404 0 2?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

SSL error: This page contains secure and non secure items
I'm not really sure where to ask this question. I've asked it in the
sharepoint forum, but thought I'd ask it in here as well.
The issue is that we have a site. It's a sharepoint site. I'm not sure if
that's a variable or not, but thought I'd mention it.
When viewing this site, you get the 'this site contains secure and
non-secure items' message in IE only. Firefox is fine.
If you view the source code on any of the pages on this site (including the
GENERATED source code) you don't see any assets/associated files being
requested via HTTP. You don't see any assets/associated files being
requested from another HTTPS site.
Any idea what would trigger this type of warning in IE? Could it be
SharePoint? IIS? IE itself? I'm completely stumped.
In terms of SharePoint, child and sibling sites of this one don't have this
issue.
In terms of SSL, it's only particular URLs on this one SSL domain.

Unable to install IIS 6 Metabase and IIS 6 Configuration Compatibi
Hi,
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1. I have been trying to
install the "IIS 6 Metabase and IIS 6 Configuration Compatibility" component
without success. After selecting this component in the "Turn Windows
Features on and off" window and then clicking OK, Windows spins for a couple
of minutes and then informs me that "An error occurred and the components
could not be installed".
I have tried the following with no success:
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled SP1 (this was on recommendation from an
"expert" at Expert-Exchange).
2. Uninstalled and reinstalled IIS 7.
3. Shut down all third party applications and disabled as many services as
possible.
Any help on figuring this out would be greatly appreciated. Also, if I am
posting in the wrong group if someone could point me to the correct group,
then thanks.

How to set up two info email accounts (different domains)

IIS
How do I set up info@domain.com and then info@otherdomain.com please?
I can't seem to find anywhere in the user profile (user->info-

Second question (in case the first was too easy) why do bounced mails
for name@otherdomain.com go to fred@domain.com? It's a bit
embarrassing for me when one of my customers is getting another
customer's bouncers.
Third question (in case you're still reading): I'm more used to LINUX
servers and use Webmin. Is there a windows equivalent so I don't have
to log in using MSTSC and go through all these poxy right-clicks that
lead nowhere?

DebugDiag Analysis
Hi all,
I'm currently trying to find the source of a critical section lock/leak
which is causing ASP queueing. Very quick question about the user dump
output that DebugDiag produces:
I have imported the private symbols for the COM objects that the site
uses, and the trace gives me the function names that are executing on
the stack - brilliant! However, the in the 'Source' column, the output
looks a bit like this:
C:\MyPath\MyClass.cls @ 289 + 116
The first line number (289) does indeed correspond to the right function
in the source code, but what does the + 116 signify?
Any help very much appreciated!

Redirection.
Hi all.
I'm hosting two sites on my XP PC. I would like to redirect a user based on
the url entered in the browser.
For example, a user enters www.somewhere.com and I'd like to send them to a
virtual site/dir for that url.
When a user enters www.somewhereelse.com, I'd like to redirect them to a
different virtual site/dir.
I've read a lot on the web about redirection, but I think I need some code
to get the url from the request (I guess), then redirect based on that info.
I hope I'm on the right track and I would sure appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Stop IIS6 App Pool from hanging
I'm the server administrator for a small business and I have one app pool
that is very problematic. There is one web site in the app pool that
receives some pretty heavy usage (40-50k visitors a day). However, the
server has specs that I'm sure should be able to handle it, and was handling
it well until a couple of months ago. Ever since then, we've had nothing but
problems. The app pool hangs frequently - typically around every 20 minutes
or so, if that.
As an initial attempt, I changed some settings in the app pool and in the
metabase file, but nothing seems to work quite well enough. I tried adding
an extra worker to the web garden, increasing thread request limits, etc. all
without success. My initial instinct was that the problem is ASP code
related, so I've spent quite a few days optimizing and fine tuning code
everywhere.
As a temporary "fix", I've enabled a frequent 5 minute worker recycle on the
app pool. This helps a lot, but does not FIX the problem.
To diagnose the problem, I've looked in the event viewer and I've run
DebugDiag numerous times.
Some common errors/warnings I get in the event viewer are:
- A process serving application pool 'PSX Extreme' exceeded time limits
during shut down. The process id was '3892'. (I'm pretty sure this means
something went wrong with a recycle?)
- Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.1830, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x05c07dc8.
The following are typical errors I get in DebugDiag:
- The following threads in w3wp.exe__PSX

search Google for related information to all of my errors and warnings, how
to analyze an IIS hang, read lots of articles by David Wang, but everything I
try, I just can't seem to get it to work.
If anyone has ANY words of wisdom or can interpret the latest DebugDiag
report on my app pool hang, I would forever be in your debt. Thanks for
taking the time to read this.

Kerberos authentication not working to IIS over SSL
I have a very basic setup in a lab. I have a Win2003 AD server, a Win2003
server running IIS, and a winXP laptop. They are all in the same domain.
I would like to get a user accessing IIS to use kerberos authentication and
not get prompted for a username and password.
The IIS server has joined the domain and in AD, I have the checkbox for
trusted delegation.
In IIS, I have unchecked the "Allow anonymous logins" under the
Authenctication section.
I have not set any SPNs manually.
The hostname of the AD server is "ADbox" the hostname of the IIS server is
"iisbox".
The domain is "demo.com". On the AD server, I added the DNS name
iisbox.demo.com to point to the IIS server.
On the laptop, in IE6, I'm putting the following url's and get the following
results:
http://iisbox - works fine, not prompted for a username or password,
uses my domain credentials and allows me to the website directly.
http://iisbox.demo.com - works fine
https://iisbox - works fine
https://iisbox.demo.com - DOES NOT work.
I can't figure out why accessing the IIS server over SSL does not work only
when using the FQDN.
Does SSL with IIS use a different worker process that I need to register an
SPN with?

I use kerberos and SPN's all the time but have currently found myself in a
boggle with this setup. Usually if I have a website that has a host header of
let's say msdn.microsoft.com which runs under say a service account named
svc-dev-website then for that service account I would set the SPN as:
http/msdn
http/msdn.microsoft.com
and kerberos would work with no problems.
Now I have a host header on my website like this one.msdn.microsoft.com and
it runs under a service account so for this I would think to set the SPN's
like above so I would end up with
http/one
http/one.msdn.microsoft.com
But this is not working! If anyone has done an SPN for a grandchild DNS
entry like above please let me! Thanks! Tag: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Tag: 404268
IWAM Logon Fails
Hi guys,
Just setting up IIS on a 2000 server (with Citrix XenApp) but have run into
a problem I can not get around.
I keep getting these two errors:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was
'The server process could not be started because the configured identity is
incorrect.
DCOM got error "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested
logon type at this computer. " and was unable to logon .\IWAM_MACHINENAME in
order to run the server:
And IWAM_MACHINENAME does not show in my AD listings (nor does
IUSER_MACHINENAME).
So how do I grant the correct logon rights?

trapping unknown subdomains in a muliple domain environ ment
Does IIS have the ability to trap unknown subdomains for particular domains
?
For example if IIS services multiple domains on the same IP address using
host header files,
then given a particular domain, is it possible to use something like
wildcards or a custom error handler for that domain via asp code to trap
unknown subdomain requests?

Can't Install IIS on Windows XP SP2
When I try to install IIS on my XP SP2 PC I get errors that files can't be
found such as adsutil.vbs. Error says to be sure you are using the SP2
disk. I don't have an SP2 disk - SP2 was updated from the internet. How can
I get around this? Tag: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Tag: 404261
One domain hosting multiple machines
I am a database developer who does web development (more than I like). Thus,
much of the plumbing of iis is a mystery to me.
Here is what I am trying to do. We have an intranet site hosted on IIS 6
(Windows 2003 I believe): devnet.mysite.com. We have created an application
called MyApp that we can access from devnet.mysite.com/MyApp. There are
other applications (mostly php) that are tied to the root of the site.
Here is what I want to do: most of the applications on devnet.mysite.com
will be hosted on one machine, but MyApp will be hosted on a separate
machine. Can this be done? Further, if someone authenticates using forms
authentication on the root site, I want to use that authentication on MyApp.

Connections being dropped
Hi folks,
We are doing some performance testing on a tiered app - IIS>WebSphere>SQL2005.
We are running some scripts to emulate multiple users interacting with the
app. IIS is a front end only - no apps installed on IIS other than Websphere
plugin.
As we move above 10 concurrent users we lose around 50% of connections with
the following HTTPErr entries:
Connection_Dropped DefaultAppPool
Connection_Abandoned_By_AppPool Defaultapppool
No Windows Event errors are occuring. At the test client we receive a
"Socket error on port 80".
We are running some perf counters across the board and some other testing to
identify bottlenecks, but I am looking for some general advice on these
errors and/or on maximising IIS potential for multiple connections.
Thanks,

Issues with an application pool and identitys
Ok, This is the case
I have a web site which is sitting in its own app pool running under
the network service.
Under it, I have a virtual directory sitting in a totally different
pool running under a dedicated AD user.
The web site in itself works fine with no issues, but the virtual
directory does let you view ANYTHING... not even an htm page forget
about asp or aspx.
Troubleshooting:
1. No events, No logs, just an annoying "Internet Explorer cannot
display the webpage" (and yes this is the full error)
2. When changing the app pools identity to network service, the
virtual directory works fine... but obviously i need the identity:)
3. I have other servers that work just fine with this setting
If anyone has a clue let me know Tag: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Tag: 404244
Pass through authentication
We are having issue with pass through authentication for IE 7 . It works
correclty with IE6 but we get a 401 error with later versions of IE. It looks
like the settings in IE are correct. It picks the dev site up as local
intranet and i have set all settings to allow the pass through authentication
but we still get the error. Is anyone aware of further configurations or
issues with IE 7 reguarding this?
this is a .net application being developed in house.
Thank You

iis with Reporting Services 2005
hi all
I have a standard install of SSRS 2005, all is running fine, I can
deploy to my web page fine. I have added a group and in some cases a
single person to verify.
Giving them browser and publishing roles
when they try to log on to my server
eg http:\\myservername\reports
they get cannot open this web page. I'm thinking from this it is
something wrong in the IIS server is that correct?
If so what is it that I need to correct?
appreciate any help to track it down.
thanks
