    - automate client cert mapping for a web app. I am attempting to automate the process of setting up client cert authentication for a web app. Basically, I need to automate setting ?Accept client certificate? for a particular web app and enable client cert mapping for that web app and setup the certificate to account mapping. From the research I have done I think that the proper wmi/adsi object is IIsCertMapper in terms of mapping a particular cert to an account (I just need a 1 to 1 mapping) My problem is that when (in powershell) I use the following: gwmi ?list ?n ?root/microsoftiisv2? I see the IIsCertMapper class but when I gwmi IIsCertMapper ?n ?root/microsoftiisv2? the object returned seems to be null (i.e. passing it to get-member produces an error). I have a feeling that I need to first create an instance of the IIsCertMapper that is attached/contained by the webapp but I haven?t figured out how to do that. I would prefer to use powershell and wmi to get the job done but at this point I'll take anything that works. If anyone has any insight in how to automate this process or an example of how to properly use IIsCertMapper I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks eric Tag: Starting new web sites.     - IIS won't install with SP2 - Please help! Hello. Can anyone offer advice on this problem? In brief, I am trying to install IIS on my XP Pro with SP2 PC (via Control Panel -> Add Windows Components), and it tells me it needs admxprox.dll from the SP2 CD. However, there is no admxprox.dll on the SP2 CD. Many more details follow... I'm nearly sure that I had upgraded to SP2 via an automatic download. Nonetheless, when I tried to install IIS (via Add Windows Components), I was told to insert the Service Pack 2 CD, which I didn't have. So I borrowed one from a friend, and inserted it when the installation process told me to, but still no luck. So I double clicked the SP2 CD to explore it, and got the Autoplay program, which wanted to install SP2, so I permitted it to do so, and restarted as required. Once again I tried to install IIS, and once again it asked for the Service Pack 2 CD. This time it was trying to find a file called admxprox.dll, which I believe is actually different from the one it was asking for the first time (whose name I've forgotten), so maybe the installation of Service Pack 2 got us further along. For what it's worth, the IIS installation program defaults to F:\i386 as the place to browse for admxprox.dll (where F is, in fact, the drive letter of the CD drive where I inserted the Service Pack 2 CD). Unfortunately there is no i386 folder on that CD. There IS an i386 folder in my Windows\System\ServicePackFiles directory, but alas it contains no file named admxprox.dll. It does contain admexs.dll and admwprox.dll, both dated 8/4/2004, which I presume must be the approximate date that SP2 came out. The next morning (today), I conducted a full virus scan and nothing was found but some cookies, after which I went through the SP2 Autoplay installation all over again, and tried yet again to install IIS via Add Windows Components. Same result. It still wants admxprox.dll. Note also: Since the computer was sold to me with XP already on it by a no-name shop, Microsoft refuses to help me for free. The shop who sold it to me is 1,000+ miles from where I live now and I don't even know their phone number. Nevertheless, my license key for XP is valid, as confirmed by Microsoft when I had to reinstall after a disk crash. Yesterday evening the aforementioned i386 folder had an update date of 2/16/2006 at 9:39 pm, which is, in fact, when I let the Autoplay installation program do its thing.     - Cannot Re-Enable DCOM...Machine Hanging I have messed up a Windows 2003 Web Edition server by turning off DCOM. Apparently IIS uses it heavily and after a reboot the machine is hanging and the desktop does not draw for any user including administrator. I disabled DCOM by using DCOMCNFG and unchecking the enable DCOM on this computer checkbox. I cannot reenable DCOM by the same application because upon reboot it behaves abnormally and crashes in many places. I tried to enabled DCOM manually changing the following registry to the value Y: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE\EnableDCOM On reboot, the problem does not go away. Further, the DCOMCNFG application still does not have the enabled checkbox showing as enabled, so apparently more steps are required.     - HELP: IIS6 pernamently caches XSL uri and won't change!! woes ... Okay, this is really weird. We have two Windows 2003 Server SP1 PCs. One hosts IIS6 website, and the other hosts our DCOM service program. Our website is ASP/XSL. An ASP page uses Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0 to transform a XML top node via XSL stylesheet outputting to HTML. We have set up the website on-site successfully with no problems. However, when we upgraded our client some how IIS6 still references a really old XSL file. No matter how many times we restart Windows 2003 Server or IIS6, somehow the old XSL file is still being used. I then found out about "Lazy Delay Propagation for ASP pages". I checked the registry and it's already disabled. I then found out about "Uri caching". I disabled that. Still no luck. Why is IIS6 still referencing the old XSL file? Even when I remove the "virtual directory" from IIS6, I can't modify/rename/delete the actual folder that it was pointing to. Does anyone know whether there's a conflict issue with IIS6 & MSXML 4.0?     - Authorizing a group I'm new to IIS. I've read a book on admin'ing IIS, and I've played around with a test server. My question is this: how do you set up authentication so that only a small group of people can get at your website? Do you have to rely solely on Windows-level security?     - Migrate to new server Hi All, I have been given the task of migrating a 2003 server with many FrontPage subsites. Each subsite has unique permissions for the individual teachers. I was able to use the IISMT tool to copy the file and folder data to the new server but it did not copy the Sharepoint permissions.     - IIS Access Denied errors Recently the company web server began prompting for account passwords as users visited sites (even redirects to external sites). No account passwords would successfully login. After some research, I decided to reset the Anonymous Access permissions on the server Web Sites. That 'appeared' to work, but only for a few minutes. Soon users no longer received the password prompt dialog. Instead, they were simply met with a standard 401.1 "Access Denied due to invalid credentials." I tried resetting the IUSR_<server-name> account (password only though), and then I reset the anonymous access permissions by 'Browsing' for the user account and manually typing in the new password. I restarted IIS and sites and redirects began working again. But...again...some short time (minutes) later, the 401's began again. At this point I can restart IIS and restore full site functionality.     - nightmare with ASP, IIS6 & VC6 PSDK I have been having a nightmare with ASP/ASP.NET & IIS6. We use Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0 object to create a XML object in ASP. The Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0 is from the Windows Platform SDK Feb 2003 (the last version compatible with VC6). Then we use TranslateXSLT(XMLDocument.transformNode) passing in a xsl file path. Our pages work perfectly fine under IIS5 & IIS6 onsite. However strange things happening at our clients IIS6: - transformation just displays the xml nodes instead of the html code.     - How to redirect to our SSL(https) site without afftect the google robot? I have a site need to using https to access, all the pages. I would like it to be indexed by search engine robot actually.     - Installing Client Certificates Hello, I am developing an ASP.net 2.0 application on WinXP Sp2 in which I used a login control. I have also implemented SSL and Membership provider. I have also installed Self Signed Server Certificate by using SelfSSL. Now this certificate has only single purpose "Server Authentication" as displayed in its properties. Now If I export this certificate along with the private key to a Personal Information Exchange (.pfx) file. and then import that .pfx file to my IE7 browser for installation. Will it serve the purpose of "Client Authentication". If not , what should I do so that "Client Authentication" certificate can also be installed with the same "private key".     - WebDav Large Files Missing from List I have a folder that's published in IIS. If I view the folder using plain old IE browsing, I see the default list of files including a 2GB file in the directory. However if I use WebDav to view the directory, I see only the two other files (both under 1 MB) but not the 2 GB file. It just doesn't show up. Is there a limit to the size of files that will be enumerated when viewing a folder using WebDav? And is there a way to change that limit (preferably server side)? Thanks, Alex.     - Sorting the "Application Pool" drop-down list ? Hi, I have just migrated to IIS 6.0 from 5.0 using the Microsoft Migration Tool. Everything worked great to my surprise! The tool created an application pool for each website using the following format: "ip_domain.com" (ex: 192.168.6.1_thissite.com) The only thing is, under the WebSite Properties, the application pool list appears to be sorted by site ID, not alphabeticaly! Now when I need to modify the application pool of a site, I have to look manually through the list of 600+ app. pools in order to find the one I'm looking for!     - w3wp.exe process monitoring and logging We have a highly used IIS application that is utilizilng multiple w3wp.exe processes that range from 100 MB to 500 MB in memory utilization. There can be up to 10 of these processes for one application on this server that has 4 GB RAM. We canNOT have the application reset at a lowered preset level because we do not want the process to terminate in the middle of a query. Although I disagree with this and would like to preset the memory threshold at 200 MB, this has turned into a political game. I now feel the need to gather concrete proof that this is a problem and show some actual data. I am trying to write a script that will capture these processes and show that they are increasing in memory utilization and never releasing any memory. I would like to find a command line tool that will show the actual memory usage for each process and not just the virtual memory. If there is such a tool, I would like to know how to find it and download it.     - Multiple rules for a single SMTP OnInboundCommand sink Hi, I am writing a OnInboundCommand sink implementing ISmtpInCommandSink for the SMTP Service. According to MSDN, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/b8aafeb4-8883-482b-8cf8-77b3975336b3.aspx, I can specify multiple rules for the same binding: <<Rule A string identifying a protocol filter for the sink binding. The dispatcher uses the rule as a condition or set of conditions that determine whether the sink is notified. The rules are SMTP protocol command rules, such as EHLO. Rules may include conditions, such as EHLO=*.contoso.com. Multiple rules are separated by semi-colons.>> However, if I specify "rule1;rule2" as the rule for my sink binding, the sink is only called when the SMTP Service sees exactly "rule1;rule2", not when it sees individual "rule1" or "rule2". My question is, how do I specify multiple rules for the same OnInboundCommand sink binding for the SMTP Service?     - One Site Multiple Identities Ok here is the issue: One defined Web Site in IIS with Two identities. Each identity is assigned a specific IP; one needs to be http and other IP requires SSL. It appears this should be possible, but I need confirmation. I have successfully given one site two identities using one IP but I have problems when trying second IP.     - .Net 1.1 and 2.0 on x64 IIS machine Greetings, We got a new W2K3 R2 64x server to be used as a web server. We would like to run both asp.net 1.1 and 2.0 applications on it. I folowed the instruction on MS knowledge base to enable 32bit apps on IIS and installed both frameworks on the server.     - new to IIS just installed IIS from my windows xp professionsal I believe its IIS 5.1 first i replaced the webroot directory with the folder containing the website and when i go to localhost/ i get page cannot be displayed.     - How to troubleshoot install of IIS 7 on Vista (won't install) ? What is the best way to troubleshoot issues with installation of IIS 7 on a Vista Ultimate workstation? I have managed (after several attempts) to get the 'World Wide Web Services' group to install, but 'Web Management Tools' always fail. I need that group to load in order to debug applications with VS 2005. Does the system log the reason behind the failures somewhere?     - .Net and SQL timeout error Here is the Scenario. We run a .Net application that was built for us by a third party. The application runs on a web server and connects to a separate SQL server. I have set up Delegation on the IIS server to allow Double Hop Authentication. The connection string we are using is: <add key="connection" value="workstation id=workstation1;packet size=4096;integrated security=SSPI;data source=SQLSERVER;persist security info=False;initial catalog=scheduler;Trusted_Connection=Yes"/> Everything works fine except for the fact that every once in a while users will get the SQL error: Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. Then a few refreshes of the web page and we can get back in. This seems to happen on no certain schedule or time, it is very random. I can leave the webpage up for an hour and it would be fine, or 10 min and it would error out. I have checked all the necessary places that I could think of. The web.config looks fine, I know you can control the timeout when using forms authentication, but I have not found a time out vaule for Windows Authentication. I have also been up and down IIS and changed different time setting there with no effect.     - question about IUSR_server and security Hi, I run a webserver on windows xp prof sp2 and IIS 5.1. (no domain). I have an asp.net application which is accessible for anonymous users. IIS-configuration is set on Anonymous allowed (IUSR_server). No other authentification. The windows account ASP.NET has READ permissions for the directory containing the application and R/W for the database directory. The account ASP.NET is only member of the USERS group. The account IUSR_server exists, is only member of the GUESTs group but has no permissions anywhere (so no permission for the directory with the application). Now, i access from another computer (in our LAN without any domain) the application by typing it's IP (10.0.0.60) and .. i have access to the whole application. And this without any authentification (normal because anonymous access). My question is: what is the purpose of account IUSR_server, because it's obviously not used here?     - Session() variables question I have an ASP [Classic] application running under IIS 5 & 6 [on different servers (obviously)] I need to implement Session() variables to cache some frequently looked up data. Because of the nature of the data, it is best held in the Session() rather than the Application() object. My question is: Is there a limit to the how long the parameter name can be? For example: Session("HairColour") - the parameter name length her is 10 characters - what's the max length (is there a max length)?     - REMOTE_ADDR Gives my External IP Instead of LAN Address I have a webserver which is behaving strangely. The server is a fresh copy of Windows 2003 running IIS with default options + Active Server Pages installed. The server is connected to a Linksys router, and has a static IP address of 192.168.1.10. When I access a page with the following script directly from the server, my WAN IP address is returned (24.x.x.x.), instead of my LAN address. <% Dim sIPAddress sIPAddress = Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR") Response.Write "<h1>IP Address = <b>" & sIPAddress & "</b></h1>" %> Everything I've read about the REMOTE_ADDR server variable tells me that it should return the IP address of the machine accessing the page. Shouldn't this return the 192 address? When I view the page as //localhost/dev/ip.asp, it returns the 127. address, but when I view the page using my domain name, it returns the external IP.     - IIS WebServices (XML/SOAP) I am running 4x IIS6.0 Webservices servers and have been monitoring connections on the f5 load balancer and perfmon'ing the sites. 2 used HTTP Keep Alives and had a steady number of connections...the other 2 had keep disabled and 0 connections, although IIS logs reported the amount of connections/requests being handled. Now I realise that without keepalives connections are cleaned up, but my question is whether to use Keep Alives with WebServices anyway......they are pretty much asyncronous calls and non session based.......posts and results, so probably no need to keep alive the connection right??? As Keep-alives are more use with user type sites. If you have any experience with webservices and this setting, I'd like to know your thoughts.     - Problem Installing IIS on Win XP Pro I have a feeling this is probably in the wrong place, but I have an annoying problem trying to install IIS. Basically, go through the normal steps, Add/Remove Programs > Add Windows Components, select IIS but when the installation begins the dialos says it's "Building file list" and just sits there! I've left it for ages, but it doesn't change. It doesn't ask for the CD, or any other installation location. I'm sure it's not a problem with Add/Remove Windows Components because I have removed MSN Explorer and reinstalled that with no problems, didn't even ask for the CD.     - Web hosting I am looking to set up a web hosting service first in small scale to serve different coorporate domains, further on to supply partners and customers the same service. I want to plan from the beginning for a solution that will not become dependant on our internal domain and namespace. I've just installed SBS 2003 with all the 'standard' options [IIS, Exchange,
etc]. IIS has the standard web sites in it already (Default, comapnyweb,
SharePoint). I want to add 2 additional sites with domain name I have
already purchased for anonymous internet access. My question is, is there a
step by step best practice doc somewhere that describes the crater to stay
out of as it relates to security, DNS, SSL, Host Headers and port sharing?
