Error Sending mail using IIS6 SMTP
Hi gurus,
I am having an IIS6 server using it's SMTP virtual server to send mail.
There are two mail items that cannot be sent and the error logged is:
"The transport lost its connection to the server."
The connection timeout is set to 10minutes in SMTP server.
The email has some attachments.
What could be the cause for this error?
Thanks in advance.

IIS 5.0 access denied
I can no longer connect to IIS on my laptop running Windows 2000 Pro. When
opening control panel->administrative tools->IIS management, I get the
following error message (translated from norwegian version, so english phrase
might not be exact):
"There was an error connecting to <hostname>: access denied. Would you like
to connect later?"
I'm logged on the computer with administrator privileges, and have full
access to all files and applications. IIS and localhost was working fine a
few days ago, but in the meantime I have installed and uninstalled a
VPN-client, and installed a JAVA development tool (Eclipse). I've tried
uninstalling and re-installing IIS, but it still won't work. Any ideas?

IIS 6: Problem with ASP pages
Hi
I'm running 10 websites on Server 2003/IIS 6. Half of
them are html, other half asp.
Everythings seems fine at first, but at some point I
can't get the server to display asp pages. And I don't
get any error messages, not in the browser, and not in
the event viewer. The browser just "freezes". (Opening
page...) HTML pages works. And I have to restart IIS to
fix the problem. This happens once a day.
The only errors in the event viewer comes AFTER i restart
IIS:
- "The World Wide Web Publishing Service service
terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 5 time(s)."
- "The IIS Admin Service service terminated
unexpectedly. It has done this 6 time(s)."
- "The IIS Admin Service service terminated
unexpectedly. It has done this 7 time(s). The following
corrective action will be taken in 1 milliseconds: Run
the configured recovery program."
- "The FTP Publishing Service service terminated
unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s)."
- "The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service
terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s)."
-----
Also in the metabase explorer, under W3SVC I get a
AspScriptErrorMessage:
- "An error occurred on the server when processing the
URL. Please contact the system administrator."
Can anyone help me? PLEASE.

IIS 6.0 and POP3
I received a worm through on my mail server. My antivirus program was unable
to remove it, so out of panic I deleted the Domain on the POP3 MMC, as well
as the folder with the same domain name in the mailroot folder. The good
news is I believe the virus has been successfully removed.
My problem is, is that I cannot re-enter the domain back into the POP3 MMC.
When I click new domain, and enter the domain in the appropriate place, I
receive the following error:
The POP3 Service could not create the domain because: The specified
domain already exists

Can't Create New Web Site in Visual Studio or FrontPage
Due to some strange problem with Internet Information Services, or the
FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, or some vestigial junk from SharePoint, I
am unable to create a web application in Visual Studio .NET 2003, and unable
to create a new web site in FrontPage 2003. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled every possibly relevant bit of software I can think of (short of
Windows XP Professional), including Visual Studio, FrontPage, Internet
Information Services, the FrontPage Server Extensions (plain and 2002), and
the SharePoint Portal 2001 Server Client software (currently uninstalled).
I have uninstalled, repaired, and reinstalled several of these components
more than once. Nothing is solving the problem, including a several days
discussion with an MVP on the
Microsoft.Public.FrontPage.Extensions.WindowsNT newsgroup. So I'd be very
appreciative if any of you can suggest something else I might try.
Symptoms are these:
1. In Visual Studio, upon the attempt to create a new web application
project, the system simply hangs while displaying the Create New Web
progress dialog:
Creating the web 'http://localhost/WebApplication1'
2. In FrontPage 2003, upon the attempt to create a new one page website, I
get the following error message:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------
An error occurred accessing your Windows SharePoint Services site files.
Authors - if authoring against a Web server, please contact the Webmaster
for this server's Web site. WebMasters - please see the server's
application event log for more details.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------
Regrettably, the application event log sheds no light, showing no entries
resulting from the attempt to create a site.
If I then launch the IIS management console, a red stop sign marked "Error"
shows up next to the Default Web Site, but I do not know how to get
information about what specific error causes that icon to display. If I run
"Check Server Extensions", the response is "No problems found." If I run
"Check Server Extensions 2002", Internet Explorer attempts to display the
page
http://dim4300/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll?page=health.htm
but that just hangs with the green progress bar at the bottom of the screen
chugging away and getting nowhere. During some phases of my efforts to fix
this problem, the progress bar has run to completion, presenting simply a
blank page in IE. Uninstalling and reinstalling the FrontPage Server
Extensions 2002 and/or IIS does not solve the problem.
As I say, I would really appreciate some assistance with this problem. I've
been banging away at it for almost a week now.
Many thanks,

Problem with WWW Publishing Service
Hello,
I had my IIS running fine on my machine (XP Pro). Sometime yesterday, I went
in to my IIS Manager (MMC, I guess), and I highlighted my computer name and a
message box comes up saying "You have been denied access to this machine".
Then, a red 'X' is displayed on the icon of my machine name in the list. Now,
I went to my services applet and realized that the World Wide Web Publishing
Service is no longer listed. I uninstalled and re-installed IIS to no avail,
and I went ahead and did a repair using my XP CD-ROM, thinking perhaps I had
a corrupt file of some kind. Even after re-installation, etc, the WWW
Publishing Service is never listed in the services applet again. What
happenend? I have been using FrontPage to write a web site and all was going
well...now, nothing. Any help here would be greatly appreciated....
Thank you,

Re: w3svc wont start, metabase ccorrupted
I would get the machine working prior to doing an upgrade and then plan
out your upgrade path to 2K3. So there are no backups in the
c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\metaback folder? Looks like your best bet
will be to uninstall and re-install IIS.

Windows Server 2003, IIS6, isolating users frustration
We have a folder structure, developed under Win2K/IIS5, that looks about
like this:
c:\inetpub\wwwroot
\OurApplication
\ClientImages
\ClientID1
\ClientID2
\DataUploads
\ClientID3
\ClientID4
In IIS, it looks like this...
OurFTPSites
\ClientLogin1 (virtual - pointing to
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\OurApplication\ClientImages\ClientID1)
\ClientLogin2 (virtual - ditto\ClientID2)
\ClientLogin3 (virtual - c:\inetpub\wwwroot\DataUploads\ClientID3)
\ClientLogin4 (virtual - ditto\ClientID4)
Under IIS5, by giving each of our users their own logins and virtual
directories, they are locked in to their own folders but within the web tree
so the web application/ASP files, scripting.FileSystemObject, and other
programs can all get to the files.
So, now we're getting ready to move to another server, Windows2003/IIS6.
I've read all about isolating users, but it appears that we're being locked
into a folder structure of "ftproot\LocalUser\username", which doesn't help.
I've tried using the IIS5 method of virtual directories, but I get a "User
ClientLogin1 cannot log in, home directory inaccessible." Permissions are
set properly on the target folder, identical in every substantive way to our
Win2K server.
What's the answer here? Am I stuck with the folder structure Microsoft
dictates? Seems like a HUGE step backwards.

Integrated Auth Prompt 4 Password
Once local users have logged onto the Windows 2000 domain, I would like for
them to access my IIS website that is secured with NTLM/Integrated Windows
Authentication.
When a user accesses http://webserver they are taken straigh to the start
page.
When a user accesses http://webserver.domain.com they are prompted for their
credentials.
When a user accesses http://192.168.1.1 they are prompted for their
credentials.
All of the above resolve to the same Server. The server has no header
defined in IIS.
The client and server are on the same subnet and do not use
proxy/gateway/firewall or anything else.
It is a 2000 Domain (mixed mode) with both DNS and WINS servers.
Could WINS name resolution somehow allow the credentials to be carried over
to the server while DNS name resolution does not?
The only difference that I can see is that http://webserver may use WINS
while http://webserver.domain.com would use DNS and http://192.168.1.1 would
access the machine directly.
Users have been complaining (which they are very good at doing) about the
number of times they have to log in to get to their Web Based Email. I need
for them to always use http://webserver.domain.com as they are not very
literate - so asking them to alter the URL is not a favourable option.
My long terms goal is to avoid all login prompts unless absolutely necessary
(some users will access the site from outside the company). Also, certain
users will be accessing via an ISA proxy so I wanted to implement Digest
Authentication - but I would like to get http://webserver.scd.ie with NTLM
working first.
Any help is appreciated. I am stumped and am unable to find a solution

Diagnosing Log File
I have a directory with a simple HTML file in it. Yet whenever I try to
access it I get an 'http/1.1 404 Not Found' error message. The file is
definitely there. The address is correct. I am presuming it is
permissions, but I have checked and checked and they are OK (as far as I can
tell).
The IIS log says:

Wtf does this mean? Is there an error code anywhere? All it says is
'file not found'? Can I diagnose this any further and if so, how?

Help
I have a Windows 200 Server acting as a Web Server. I have a web application
that is available to the parents of our students to view report cards, lunch
info etc. The server has 2 NIC card in it with one having a public IP
connected to DMZ of my firewall and the other is internal to my network,
connecting it to the applications database. Everything inside my network can
access the page great. Anyone outside can not. I have put a switch between
the firewall and the 2 - T1s and it was able to access it from there just
like I can from within. I worked with ISP you said it was firewall (had
already worked with them - they say there isn't anything that would stop it).
Every once and awhile it becomes available but after a few hours it stops
being available. I have even rebuilt the server and after a few hours have
the issue. All service packs are current - so I'm beside myself. Any help

Re: Please help me!
Your density will vary depending on what those websites will be used
for, i.e. if they're all simple html sites then you can achieve high
density, if they're all asp.net driven sites, then your density could
be lower. also, how you organize them can play a role in density, i.e.
will you be nesting them all in one application pool or will you be
assigning an individual application pool to each virtual. In that
case, memory willl become a factor in your planning. let me know if
you have any other questions.
thanks.

DNS for hosting: A or CNAME?
Our company website has just been moved from one provider (Apache,
stable for several years now) to another (IIS 5) to allow a
developer's ASP application to run on it.
The migration left the new site offline for 23 hours. (!!!)
I'm not dealing directly with the webhost (there's a tangled path
there involving the ASP developer), but my role came down to (a)
updating our domain's DNS to point to the new host and (b) trying to
sort out who was responsible for the foulup so I could get them to fix
it.
Long story short, the hosting company kicked off by passing us an odd
request specifying that DNS needed to be by CNAME rather than A. Now,
I know for a fact that Apache doesn't care either way, and I'm at a
loss to see how IIS would know any difference either: TTBOMK *any* web
server simply checks the hostname requested against what it expects to
answer for that IP, and doesn't look into the origins of that name any
further. (Unlike, eg., mail servers, which frequently do rDNS
lookups.) Mind, I don't run a public-facing webserver of any breed,
so I happily accept I could well be wrong there.
Updating DNS to point to them (yes, via CNAME) left us with 23 hours
of "No web site is configured at this address."
I already know for a fact they've been shining us on--after finally
fixing things, they claimed to the developer that:
: ... the customer did not take our advice and use a CNAME, at least I
: can not find any evidence of one. It seems they in fact entered an A
: record for the domain
... even though the zone reads
: www 10800 IN CNAME www.blahblahblah.co.nz.
and dig returns the same.
(that rates about a 7 on my shoot-yourself-in-the-foot scale!)
My question is: *can* IIS tell any difference, or is this simply a
further indication that I should request that the tangled path
terminate with someone who actually knows what they're doing?
thanks,

Back button not working after move to windows 2003 server
I am reposting this question because i did not get a final response to the
first time I posted it.
We recently moved our web application from a windows 2000 server machine to
one with 2003 Server Web Edition. Users of our application had been used to
having the ability to use the back and forward browser nav buttons while in
our app. For example, they would do a search, see the resutls in a datagrid,
click a link to go to a new page to see details, and then click back to get
to the result list again. After moving servers, when they click the back
button to pretty much any data page in the system, With friendly error
messages turned off in IE, they now get the following:
****************************************
Warning: Page has Expired The page you requested was created using
information you submitted in a form. This page is no longer available. As a
security precaution, Internet Explorer does not automatically resubmit your
information for you.
To resubmit your information and view this Web page, click the Refresh
button.
******************************************
Clicking refresh does indeed reload the page.
What if anything can I do to make the page automatically resubmit the from
data?
Is this an IIS setting or an application setting that i can change?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

DNS or IIS issue?
I have Windows2003 Ent running IIS 6.0 and DNS
I have created a new web site in FrontPage 2003 on a
seperate workstaion in the domain. I am at the Publishing
phase now and have been trying everything the books say
on how to publish your site pointing to a server with
Frontpage extentions. I don't want to use the default
site in IIS so I created a new directory on my server
then created a new web site in IIS and pointed to that
directory as the home directory. I then went into the
advanced settings for the new site in IIS and removed the
default Host header value and created a new one with the
WWW.MYDEV.COM as the header value and used the IP address
of the server and port 80. I also enable FP extensions
for this new site.
I then created a DNS CNAME record of www.mydev.com and
pointed it to the servers FQDN A record.
I restarted DNS and IIS services.
I try and push or Publish my web pages to the server but
it can't resolve or find http://www.mydev.com.
I go to my IE browser and type http://www.mydev.com and
it goes out on the internet and doesn't resolve to my
inTRAnet site?
If I type http://myservername in the browser it resolves
to the default IIS webpage.
Did I create the DNS record wrong? any ideas.
Thanx

FTP files not showing update
I set up an FTP server and I log into and drag files into
it, but their not going into the server.
I searched both hardrives and the files are residing in
C:\ on the hardrive that was trying to drag them into the
server.
Why is this?

moving web from iisv4 to iis v5
I'm familiar with robocopy, but not the IISEXPORT
utility. Where can I get a copy of it?
I tried to run the iisv4/v5 migration utility and it gives
me an error when I try to install it on the source (iisv4)
server: "Unable to create vitual web"
Any help on these two issues will put me back on track.
Thanks!

IIS 5.1 - Web Site Connections Limit not there ?!
Hello,
I have a machine running XP Pro with SP2 and on the Default Web Site I would
like to change the "Connections Limit" because
I get the error message: Too many users are connected and there is a link to
the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q248074&sd=tech
The problem is that since I installed SP2 I can not find the Connection
Limit textbox ?!
I have done this many times before but now I can not find it?!
In IIS Manager I do a right click on default website and on the "Web Site"
tab there is a section called "Connections" but
now the only available options are "timeout" textbox which is set to 900 and
HTTP Keep Alive checkbox.
Can anyone give me a hint of what is going on here?
Do I have to reinstall IIS ?

FrontPage run-time component page
I currently have an IIS server setup with FrontPage
extensions installed. I've created a website with a form
page. When trying to submit the form I get the following
error:
You have submitted a form or followed a link to a page
that requires a web server and the front page server
extensions to function properly. This form or other
FrontPage component will work correctly if you publish
this web to a web server that has FrontPage server
extensions installed.
Any ideas why this would happen?

email problem
I have an ASP automatic email confirmation code on Windows 2003 Server. My
problem is that the message can be submitted to only some email accounts
such as hotmail or yahoo, but cannot to my office account. Why? Also, for
hotmail accounts, the email is sent to junk mailbox instead of inbox. Why
this happens? Do I need to set up any special SMTP configurations? Tag: Start IIS Admin service as a non admin user Tag: 344648
Re: PHP support and Site replication?!?
On question 2, you could look into moving your content to a DFS path
and then map the two webservers, via unc, to that path, saving you the
trouble of replicating the data. Additionally, you could run a
scheduled task that'll export the metabase using IISCnfg.vbs and then
copy it to a remote share in the event you lose the volume completely.
The only way to monitor the metabase for changes is to use ABO. The
only way to get that hook is to write your custom monitoring app in
C++. Change-notification subscription isn't available via WMI (though
it should be) for the metabase. In C# you're unable to monitor the
metabase for changes unless you create a wrapper for the specific
functions in ABO that allow change-notification monitoring.
Another thing to think about is if you're using ODBC. If so, then you
will need to export the registry keys and replicate them to.
Hope this helps.

Restore of iis config
Hi,
iis 5.0 on win 2k, I am running through the microsoft article on the
following URL and restoring the configuration from backup after a
re-installation of iis:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302573&sd=tech
However when I get to the bit:
cscript.exe X:\InetPub\AdminScripts\Adsutil.vbs enum w3svc
the value returned for the WAMUserPass is: String "****************"
Which doesn't seem like much use to me.
Does anyone have experience of restoring the config from backup and know any
way around this or how to get the IWAM password?
Thanks. Tag: Start IIS Admin service as a non admin user Tag: 344646
