        • W3SVC EventId 1011 - DefaultAppPool/WWW fatal communication error This is a follow up to the post indicated on the subject. I should have updated this before so please accept my apologies. This error, eventId 1011, is a generic error thrown by the world wide web publishing service when the IIS6 Application pool (w3wp.exe) crashes when an http request is being processed. Without mattering what the cause of the crash is, this error is logged. If you just cancel the w3wp.exe process from the task manager when a request is being process, this error will be logged. Well, it took us a while to find out what the cause of our crash was. In our case, the problem was that our application was using a very old Sybase ODBC driver, which wasn´t supported on the .NET platform. This driver usually worked fine, but ocasionally, in a random manner, caused this crash. We updated this driver for a valid one, and the problem was solved. We contacted Microsoft support and installed the IIS Debug tools. The IIS memory dump we got led us to the ODBC problem. The thing is that this event id 1001 is so generic, that in other cases, the problem might be litterally anything. Best regards, Gabriel. Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333103

        • IIS5.0 and SMTP. First and foremost, I'm a total noob to IIS and webhosting. I started messing around with IIS as I am intending on starting a career in IT. On installing IIS, I notice that if Default SMTP Virtual Server is not running and my website is hosted as the Default Web Site, that I could not ping the website by its domain name - www.sitename.com, could not do a tracert to the domain name. I have the latest service pack installed (sp4) and have installed all critical patches on the server (120 day trial version). What exactly does this virtual server do? • IIS 6 Locks Up, Must Restart, No Event Errors Oh, someone please... please help. I really can't afford the $250 call to MS, but am running out of options quickly. I have a single server configuration (Dell PE2650), running the applications below: Windows Server 2003 IIS 6.0 SQL Server 2000 Std MySQL 4.1.08 SmarterMail SmarterStats TitanFTP PHP And, a few ASP components. The issue is this: At random (sometimes twice a day; sometimes days in between) IIS locks up, and all sites go dead. Most sites are written in ASP / HMTL. One in PHP. When opening IIS, all APPEAR to be functioning normal (from a novice's view). Every other "server" app continues to function normally (ie. mail, ftp, stats, etc.) When examining the Event Viewer, no Errors can be found... only the occasional Warning about W32Time not syncronizing, and the occasional SQL Server "SuperSocket" Warning. No Warnings or Errors on the same day IIS locks up. I will bite the bullet if necessary (MS/$), as this absolutely has to be solved... but if ANYONE has an idea of what might be the problem, suggestions will be greatly appreciated. It's been happening every since setting up the server. Thanks, -Nate Jones 800-519-9091 Cell 866-815-3366 Home PS : Unlike many out there, everything on this system has a legal license. I have made the extra effort and sacrifice to be so, but STILL find myself begging for support. Funny how that is. :-\ Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333085

        • 403 Error on CGI pages in IIS 6.0 I'm trying to set up an Application Pool for use with a Perl CGI application on IIS 6.0. I am using a custom user (among other reasons, I need to set up different environment settings for each application). I added the user to the IIS_WPG group, set NTFS permissions on the file system, enables the Perl CGI IIS exension, and added "adjust memory quotas for a process" and "replace a process level token" to the user in the local security policy. If I run as the user in a command shell, it works. If I request a static page in the application's virtual-directory, it works If I activate ASP and run an ASP script in the application's virtual directory, it works If I change the application pool's user to Network Service or the IWAM_ account, and run a Perl CGI script, it works But running the same script in the same app-pool as my user, I get a 403 error. I am at wits end and would greatly appreciate any pointers. Issac Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333083

        • SSL Certificate over multiple servers Can anyone advise! I wish to run an SSL secure site over multiple web servers. I generated an CSR on one web server and received the certificate back from verisign and installed on this server. I then backed up the cert & private key and imported this into the other servers. When I open the certificate MMC snapin and view the certificate it displays "This Certificate has expired or is not yet Valid" and this is the same for all servers I have imported the Cert into. The original server Certificate is fine/valid. can anyone point me as to where I am going wrong with this Implementation!! The setup is W2k IIS5, these servers run multiple site but this is the only SSL site setup. Many Thanks!! Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333064

        • inetinfo.exe using 100% CPU Hi all... I don't know why but my inetinfo.exe is using up 100% of my CPU resources. I have: a. Updated and checked for viruses. b. A pretty decent personal firewall. c. A single index.html page. No scripts... no funky stuff. Plain html only. d. Port 80 open. e. Used MS Baseline Security Check. f. Used SpyBot to check for spyware. g. I have not installed anything new. h. All my Windows patches are current. i. No configurations have been changed recently. Everytime, anything hits my IIS on port 80... my inetinfo.exe goes crazy. Takes up 100% CPU resources. Even if I try to load it from my own 2nd machine within the same network. It is only port 80... because for FTP... ports 20-21 are fine. It does not make IIS go crazy. If someone has any ideas... can you please email me? It only started happening today (9th May 04). • NTFS permissions Hi all I'm running IIS 5.x on a stand-alone windows 2000 pro connected to the internet with all the latest security patches installed and using Zone Alarm Pro as firewall. Net Framework v1.03705. I have no PDC or BDC for that matter. I have all my virtual directories on my g: partition NOT under c:\wwwroot. As I have some trouble with logins and other things. I have followed the instructions Set basic NTFS Permissions for IIS 5.0 on this page http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;271071 but I'm a little confused. I would be very happy to learn from ppl with above configuration and a fully functional web server the NTFS groups/users you have placed on the folder %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv and permissions granted. Of course only the groups/user related to the web services. For instance I have the following settings Administrators - full control Creator Owner - Have been granted full control but the checkmarks keeps disappearing and the boxes are empty? Internet guest account (/IUSR) - read & execute SYSTEM - full control Users - Read & execute Web anonymous users - Read & execute I would like to know the default setting for this folder. • Forward Email with changed Subject line and From address Hi Is there any facility within the IIS SMTP server to carry out this kind of operation? Rather than just forwarding a copy of an email to a 2nd address I would like to change the subject line of the email and also, if possible, the from address. If the SMTP server in IIS can not do this, does anyone have a suggestion for a work around? Many thanks Peter Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333032

        • ASP/FileSystemObject I have an Active Server Pages application running on two different Windows 2000 Servers. Part of the application uses the file system object to create/append to a text file on one server it works fine. On the other server, the application creates the object just fine, however when I use any of the methods such as "createtextfile" or "opentextfile" the application (through the browser) just hangs, without any error message being sent back, like it doesn't know what to do. Both Servers are essentially the same. Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333023

        • IIS Redirection Hi There, At the moment I have IIS facing the web but what I would like to do is have it then deal with my webmail system. I'm using MDaemon for webmail on port 3000 but can't seem to figure out how to do it. Is there a way for me to setup another virtual directory i.e. http://servername/webmail and to then have that virtual directory be redirected internally to http://mailserver/webmail:3000 so that it can be accessed from the web? I've tried playing around but can't seem to see a way for IIS to redirect all traffic to that port and to then deal with all the returning traffic. Hopefully this makes sense. -- Gavin Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333017

        • Digest Authentication Hi I'm running IIS 5.x on a stand-alone windows 2000 pro connected to the internet with all the latest security patches installed and using Zone Alarm Pro as firewall. I have no PDC or BDC for that matter. When I check the box Integrated Windows authentication in the authentication window it takes forever to load the asp 3.0 page. But when I check the box Basic authentication?. instead the asp pages loads almost immediately. The box Digest Authentication is checked but grayed out and cannot be changed at least not from this window. My first question. Am I running an Active Directory Server? As I have read that this has something to do with Digest Authentication. I don't think so but how can I disable it. And is this the reason for the lag? Here are the NTFS permissions on the folder which is not buy the way is located under wwwroot but on an other partition Admin full IUSR read & execute & write IWAM read & execute & write NETWORK read & execute SYSTEM full Here are some particulars for the Virtual Directory The designated directory Scripts source access read write This is NOT an application but a more secure folder under the root. Execute permissions Scripts Only My second questing is. Why does the users/clients get the login window? Didn't I give the permissions for anonymous access to the website with above settings? My third second question which might not belong here but I'm trying: Does asp pages writing to a database always need the write permission on the folder & virtual directory? Many thanks for your reply and attention to this matter on beforehand. Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 333002

        • IIS problem not a problem in Web Matrix Server I'm having the craziest problem.....Any .aspx page I make that I then run through IIS I get an error saying "Login failed for user 'machinename\ASPNET'" but if I run the exact same page through the WebMatrix server the page loads with the pulled data without a hitch. I've tried everything I can think of. It's NOT a problem with SQL Server (obviously) but I've made doubly sure of that by checking the user rights in Enterprise Manager. • Form responses do not write to database I created a form in FrontPage 2002 that I could post on the Web so that users could answer a questionnaire and so that I could compile their responses into an Access database When I tested it the form seemed to work. I received a confirmation page with my answers. However, the data did not write into the database. I clicked form properties and created the database table there and let it save to the default fpdb folder My server runs NT 4.0 with SP6. It has IE 5, MDAC 2.5, asp ver. 4.02.0785, MMC Version 4.0 (Build 1381: SP6) Version 1.0 Release, and IIS 3.0 (I think -- cannot find version on this). • no frontpage extensions in WinXP pro IIS 5.1 ??? Hello, I have had a very simple website for about 18 months on my computer under winxp pro, running IIS with all default settings. I now installed Frontpage 2003 and made another simple website using a FP2003 template, and replaced the wwwroot folder contents. I can access my new website correctly locally and from other machines on my home network and also from work, but when I want to start a "search", I get an answer telling me that my server doesn't have frontpage server extensions installed. I uploaded my whole site to my ISP who doesn't support FP server extensions and I get the same message, so I know the extensions are not installed on my computer either. Since my website should only be available in the end on my home local network, how do I install those extensions on my home computer ??? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling IIS with all options, without success. Here is the link to the site I created from the template, so you know what I mean. Try the page "Recherche". http://mypage.bluewin.ch/lorenzo.sandini/index.htm Thank you Lorenzo Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 332963

        • Using Inet in ASP Hello, I have developed an ASP page that checks for page/domain availability before performing a Response.Redirect to it. This is done by using InetCtls (Set inetTest = Server.CreateObject("InetCtls.Inet.1")). Now, I would like to handle the StateChanged event (to check, for example, for possible DNS errors) but, as I guessed, it's not as easy as in VB, in which this event would be handled by the Sub inetTest_StateChanged (...). So, the question is: is it possible to handle events (in this case, StateChanged) in ASP? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Erasmo Proietti. Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 332934

        • Issues with GPRS We have a few well established web database applications that have always been used by our office staff with no problems. Majority are running on IIS6 and are .net sites. We now need to make these applications accessible to field staff and so invested in a load of GPRS cards for their laptops only to find that .net apps do not appear to work when run over GPRS. Multiple errors occur, normally along the lines of server_response_close - The server closed the connection while reading the response. This mainly seems to be for .net apps, our .asp 3.0 apps seem to perform not too badly. Anyone else come across this? Why GPRS? the slower GMS standard seems to work fine. I've seen a few papers published by Cambridge Uni on this issue which relate it to latency in GPRS, but nothing else, it appears not to be recognised issue. Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 332922

        • My First ASP.Net Application Hello, I just got through installing the .Net Framework on my Windows 2000 Server machine and I am wondering if there is something else I must do to begin installing a ASP.Net appliction? I have read one article on the web which states that I must get a command line prompt and type the following: %windir%Microsoft .NET\Framework\V1.1.4322\aspnet_isapi.dll -i and then enter regsvt32%windir%windir%Microsoft.Net\Framwork\v1.1.4322\aspnet_isapi.dll Is this necessary? When I move the application to the server, there is an option in VS.Net which allows you to move the application...Is there some authority setting that I need to set in order to move the application? If I do it manually, there are two option that I see when I right click on the default Web site...I can create an "Application" or I can create a virtual folder. I am guessing that if I create an application is can use "DNS" name to get to my application, where as if I use a virtual directory, I would no be able to use DNS? Is that correct? The must be some reason why I would want to create an application and then a vitrual folder under the application vs. just creating a virtual directory. I would very much appreciate your input!! Thanks in advance for your assistance!!!!! Tag: IIS6 and Session Tag: 332912

        • Multiple IIS servers stopping at once Awhile ago I posted regarding a concatenation lock - that's now fixed. However we're now experiencing intermittent events where THREE seperate IIS servers [1]all stop responding similtaneously. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to this, I did an IIS State on one of the servers (below) and would appreciate some more views on it as I don't see any specific problems. Any thoughts on what might cause this? [1] via a load balancer, in a secure network environment - highly highly unlikely to something like a virus.
