The IIS is not stopped unexpectedly. It did not record
any information on the eventviewer. It only show the
message on console like

'World Wide Web Publishing Service terminated
unexpectedly'

I try to re-install the IIS but it did not work. The
service will be started for a few minutes but it will be
shopped unexpectedly without any error messages.

Make sure that you run Windows Update to get all the latest and greatest
bits.

Did you run Windows Update after you had re-installed IIS?

If that doesn't resolve the issue, then run IISState
(www.iisfaq.com/iisstate) to see if it can catch the crash:

iisstate -p <PID of inetinfo> -sc <enter>

If you need help w/the log, you can post it to the group.

Godwin,

If your server is crashing or hanging you might want to
download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's free for the first
15-days. It can keep your site running despite problems.

It's designed to detect problems then restart or reboot.
It can restart ANY programs, services, or processes in
precise order. It doesn't fix bugs but it does give you some
breathing room while you are finding them. ReJuvin8 also
gives you email and telephone alert messages and graphic
status reports.

It can also test, alert, and report on URLs running anywhere
on any server on your net connection. So if you use multiple
servers you can use them to watch each other, too.

ReJuvin8 has both an automatic and a custom mode. In the
auto mode you make all the settings by pointing and
clicking. This will handle most applications.

The custom mode uses heartbeat synch files to get absolute
detection that key processes are working. Tools and
instructions are provided to help you do this. We also offer
customization as a contract service.

Charles

Yes, I have run the windows update after re-installed.
Also I cannot run the iisstate because the inetinfo did
not start so I would not use this tools.

Check the \winnt\ directory for a User.dmp file or a DrWatson.log file. If
either is there, we may be able to use them.

Things will get a bit tougher.

1) Make sure all web services are stopped: net stop iisadmin /y <enter>
2) Start just inetinfo.exe: net start iisadmin <enter>
3) Run IISState (iisstate -p <pid of inetinfo> -sc <enter>) --Use a new cmd
window.
4) Start the web service: net start w3svc <enter>

If you have any other web services (NNTP, FTP, SMTP, etc.), now is the time
to start them.

Watch the cmd line window that IISState is running in. When the crash
happens, it will show activity.

When the problem reproduces, you can post the log to the group. If this
doesn't work, then you should call MS Support and get some 1:1 help.

I run the IISState. It states an error.

Cannot debug pid 4776, Win32 error 5

WaitForEvent failed, 0x8000FFFF

When I start w3svc. It shows

The World Wide Web Publishing Service service is starting
The World Wide Web Publishing Service service could not
be started.

The service did not report an error.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534.

Please advice. Thanks

You can't use a debugger (IISState is a debugger under the covers) through
terminal server except on WinXP and later (Win2k3). There is a permissions
issue w/the OS and the debugger API's that preclude that. You will need to
run it from the local console or set it up to run as a scheduled task.

Thanks. The machine is located in another countery. Let
me try to schedule it run. By the way, After I resume
all related service. It did not run smooth. When I stop
the IISAdmin, it will stop the POP3, SMTP, NNTP or some
related service with Exchange. After I run IISState and
resume those services. It seems that cannot start. I
need to kill inetinfo on the taskmanager. Then I can
restart those services successfully. Do you have any
idea? Thanks

You have to start those services manually (e.g. net start smtpsvc <enter>),
but otherwise, it should work OK.

Hi Pat

I have seen a couple of posts by you where you recommend running IISState as
a Scheduled Task if logged in via Terminal Server,. I have tried that, but
can't get my task to work. What is wrong with my syntax?

"C:\winnt\system32\cmd.exe C:\iisstate\iisstate -p 3204 -hc"

Thank you
