Perl File
Hello! I have a website running on IIS 6.0. The website points to some
perl files for submissions. The perl files are located in cgi-bin
directory. Here is the problem. When I click on request button, the
browser tells me file not found. I enable directory browsing and when I
open the cgi-bin folder I can see the file. When I click on the file, the
error is also the same, "File not found". I installed ActivePerl 5.8 and
still no help. The file is just not being excuted. What am I doing wrong?

IIS 5.1 and NetwAre 5.1 virtual directory share
Good Morning. I'm working with my web developer to set up a share on a
NetWare server in a remote location which will host web pages. We have
followed the instructions on Article ID 285159 (How to Create Virtual
Directories to a Remote Novell NetWare Share) with no success.
Does anyone have any experience with this and if so, could someone give us
some insight as to how to get this to work? Unfortunately, we must use the
NetWare server.
Thank you!!! Tag: Service Account IIS 6.0 Tag: 378517
IIS and SQL question
Hi,
I need to solve a problem...
There are W2Kserver with IIS and SqL 2000 server.
Both servers were removed from old office and should be run in a new ACTIVE
directory with new IP addressing. Before they were working with public
addresses.
Website is connected to SQL db.
My question:
I installed new server with clean IIS.
Now I need to transfer website folder to new IIS (that is not a problem)
I need to bring old SQL to new AD server and to point website requests to
SQL server.
What I have to do?
Thanks,
Michael. Tag: Service Account IIS 6.0 Tag: 378514
Force file download dialog; specify filename
I was looking for a way to force a file download dialog (instead of opening
a file in IE), and to specify the filename if it's different from the URI
(which is an ASP that may return different files depending on session
parameters).
KB article 260519 says you have to add a HTTP header:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/260519
Content-disposition: attachment; filename=fname.ext
But IE doesn't behave as expected: the open/save dialog is shown, but an
empty browser window is left open when you select 'save'.
However, when I omit the 'attachment' keyword, it works as expected (at
least in IE): the file open/save dialog pops up, the default filename is
the one specified, and the IE window closes if you select 'Save':
Content-disposition: filename=fname.ext
Now I'm wondering (just trying to avoid pitfalls) if there is more detailed
documentation about HTTP headers that explains why, and/or if there is a
"proper" way to specify a default filename?
I've searched MSDN and Google, but didn't find what I'm looking for.
BTW, is there a specific MIME type for XML files saved by Excel 2003 (with
<?mso-application progid="Excel.Sheet"?>) I can use instead of "text/xml"? Tag: Service Account IIS 6.0 Tag: 378513
So Many questions so little time!!!
We have 3 servers and are wanting to start utilizing the Internet more. This
is what we have.
SBS2003---Websites on this server are: Email/OWA, Remote Web Work Place, and
Sharepoint. All of these are SSL sites.
SQL Server--Holds the databases for the websites on the IIS Server
IIS Server--Websites on this server are: Work order tracking web site(needs
to be SSL), Company web site, and another SQL website (SSL).
Firewall--SonicWall Pro 2040
My Questions:
How do I use a single IP address to route to the correct web sites on the
different servers? Can I use host headers to make this work? If so how? It
is my understanding that I cannot break out the websites on the SBS server.
Is that correct?
Where should I place the IIS server? Behind the firewall or in a DMZ?
All of the servers have dual Gig NICs.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated

IIS seems to have forgotten what the British/en-GB date format is!
Hi,
Dates in my web applications (both classic ASP and ASP.NET) refuse to
display in British format.
All regional settings on my PC are set to British, as is the LCID (=
2057). All Windows apps and the OS display the date correctly.
After searching for any other settings, I came across the IIS Metabase
key LM/W3SVC/AspLCID which had a value of 2048, so I changed it to
2057, and this seems to have fixed classic ASP, but has not had an
effect on ASP.NET.
Interestingly enough, if I set ASP.NET pages to a different culture,
then it correctly uses the date format for that particular country.
It's only when I use en-GB that it ignores the setting and displays the
date in American format. It's as if IIS has forgotten what the British
standard is!
As a temporary fix, I'm using en-IE, which has the same date format as
Britain, but I really need to find out why IIS is not reading the
system default format, nor implementing the British format when I
explicitly set it.
I'd appreciate it if somebody could point me in the right direction.
BTW I'm using XP Pro SP2, and coding in ASP.NET 2.0/C#, and this is not
a database issue as even DateTime.Now returns the date in American
format.

WEB Services don't respond
From time to time we don't get any response from IIS on our 'stand alone'
Win2003 Web Server, which is running WEB services. It's strange because
there are no errors or other problems, web services just don't respond, so
the only way to solve this is to reset IIS (iis reset). After that all is
working normally. But this happens about once or twice in month.
Any ideas what could cause this behavior and how can be resolved?
Thank you all in advance

Redirection question.
Hello, I've redirected a file by doing the following:
In IIS Manager, right-click the file and choose Properties.
On the file tab chose "a redirection to a URL", entered
/article.aspx?id=10 as the URL and checked the box that says "a
permanent redirection".
I then used the browser to see if it worked and indeed the redirection
worked. I then looked at the headers to see what happens when someone
calls the original URL and I saw the following:
HTTP/1.x 301 Error
Location: /article.aspx?id=10
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 142
Why does it say 301 Error? Should it not say 301 Permanent Redirect?

hiding folders with certain names?
Hi NG,
I got a question concerning the administration of webDAV-shares with IIS.
IIS makes sharepoint portal websites accessible via webbrowser - furthermore
sharepoint portal websites are made accessible via webDAV and I assume that
this webDAV-function is implemented in IIS.
1) is it correct, that the webDAV-functionality is implemented in IIS?
2) is there any possibility to hide certain webDAV-subfolders? e.g. we need
to hide all webDAV-folders with the name "Forms" so that webDAV-clients dont
see these folders. is that possible?
I'll appreciate any hints!
cheers, jens
p.s. the source of our problem is, that we need to access the webDAV-shares
with mac osx and mac finder has huge problems (crashes! and cannot copy
files correctly onto webDAV-shares) if there are webDAV-subfolders (e.g. the
sharepoint folders "Forms") to which the mac user has no access. Tag: Service Account IIS 6.0 Tag: 378496

w3wp.exe persisting the connection to Oracle database
Hi,
We have a web service running on a Windows 2003 server and IIS6. It
uses Oracle database which is in another machine.
resently, we started getting an error: ORA-00020: maximum number of
processes (%s) exceeded. when the DBA checked the database server, it
was found that the connections are initiated by w3wp.exe which is IIS
connection pool.
In our application, we are explicitly closing the connections. But, the
connections remains open for as long as 30 min.
Is there some specific settings in IIS. Is there any other way to
handle this problem?

Application pool Crash intermittently when using unique users
I'm running IIS 6.0 with unique users for each site and application pool.
Every site is configured with a seperate pool to retain stability.
Note: I have this same configuration running on another server with no
problem. So there is obviously something different regarding my new server,
however I'm out of ideas. I've compared both machines and they appear to be
configured identically.
Each "IUSR" account is apart of the IIS_WPG group, to allow application pool
startup. They are also apart of a group "IIS_USERS", which I created. The
"IIS_USERS" group has been assigned access to the following local security
rights (Some rights are to allow cgi launch rights):
Access this computer from the network
Adjust memory quotas for a process
Allow log on locally
Impersonate a client after authentication
Log on as a batch job
Log on as a service
Replace a process level token
And as I've stated this normally works to allow a site to launch the worker
process, process html, cgi, asp and asp.net. However on this particular
machine it works on and off. Sometimes a site will launch a cgi process
(hosted by perl.exe), asp, or asp.net page with no problem. Other times, the
same site, stalls and I recieve the following event repeatedly in the System
event log:
Type: Warning
Source: W3SVC
Event ID: 1009
Description:
A process serving application pool 'appnamehere' terminated unexpectedly.
The process id was 'insert ID here'. The process exit code was '0x80'.

Sporadic Authentication Windows in IIS 6
Hello,
We have an application that resides on a server running IIS 6. The
application uses Integrated Windows Authentication. Below is what a
user states happens after he clicks the submit button:
1st- about 2-3 minutes after the SUBMIT, pop-up asks for User ID and
password.
2nd- about 2-3 minutes after the 1st pop-up, another pop-up
supplies
my User ID and password, but I have to click ok.
3rd-same as 2nd.
4th-about 2-minutes after 3rd ok, receive message that I am
not authorized to view
the page.
>From what I've been told after he clicks submit some processing happens
on the web server that creates an excel workbook. This looks like an
application related problem to me but maybe not. Any help would be
much appreciated.

Is it possible to use a web garden to isolate concurrent requests?
Is it possible to configure an IIS 6.0 web garden such that concurrent
requests will be ensured to run in different processes within the
garden at any given time? This would be similar to the process
isolation afforded by CGI, but would have the added benefit of allowing
processes to stay in memory as dictated by the rules of the web garden.
Performance would therefore be much better than is expected with CGI
on Windows because we would not need to create and tear down processes
all the time. In that sense this would be even more similar to
FastCGI. The reason for wanting concurrent requests to run in separate
processes is to ensure that those concurrent requests can not bring
down a shared process. In other words, we do not want request A to
have any impact on concurrent request B.

Hi,

Better yet, is there a way to move totally to 2.0?

IIS 6.0 file still in use after website stopped
Hi,
Occasionally we're running into the problem that static files (such as
images) in a website's home directory is still in use, even after
stopping the website.
This causes problems when we want to update the website, we have to
recycle IIS (thus taking down all existing websites) to get the file
handles to be released.
Our update process is as follows:
(1) Stop website
(2) Run deployment script (which attempts to remove the existing home
directory and all its files, and creates a new one containing the
updated versions).
(3) Start website
The reason we remove the existing home directory instead of copying
over in-place, is so that any files that may have been removed or moved
to a new location in the new version of the website aren't left over.
I'd appreciate if anyone could shed some light on why this is
happening, does stopping a website not inform HTTP.sys to release the
file handles? Or am I misunderstanding the cause of the problem?
Thanks,

Occassionally one of our production websites stops responding with the
following message:
Server Application Error
The server has reached the maximum recovery limit for the application during

If stop and start the website itself (not the IIS service) from within IIS

Then I can change the website back to isolated and everything is hunky dory

Installing PHP on IIS...easy? Asking for trouble?
We're an all MS shop here. We have access to a few servers, but they are
mostly maintained by IT.
We're getting frustrated with not being able to install simple little
productivity apps that are open source PHP apps. It's often hard to
impossible to find comparable options in .net.
So, we're thinking of throwing PHP on our dev server internally. Before we
request this, I thought I'd ask around to see how easy/hard this actually
is. My guess is we'll get an immediate 'sorry, we're MS only' response but
would like a bit of ammo to support tossing PHP on the box.
The box would then be running ASP.net and PHP. Hopefully. ;o)

We are in the process of doing the migration from IIS 4.0 to IIS 6.0.
We have done tests to identify applications which can be migrated using
the migration tool and by manual method.
Now there are different environments which we use to propagate the code
- Testing, Staging and Production. The tests which we have done are on
the testing environment.
One thing which I am not sure of is following:
- Do I need to run the migration tool on staging environment and then
on production?
- In case I run the tool on production, can I also get some inputs
around any planning or precautions which i need to take to do it? How
do we ensure that if we run the tool on production box, it is not going
to affect anything on production? Are there any specific settings or
options we need to aware of? What will happen of the applications which
require manual migration?
Any help on the above concerns will be really appreciated.
thanks

sc-win32-status of 995
I have an aspx page with an Excel spreadsheet linked to it. I have started
having some users who are unable to successfully load the spreadsheet. When
looking in the logs I find that those who fail to load have an
sc-win32-status of 995. They seem to be loading about 1/3 of the file based
on the sc-bytes and are taking about 8 minutes rather and 2 seconds. Any
idea what this status code is trying to tell me? Tag: Service Account IIS 6.0 Tag: 378429

Mutiple SSL Sites [one] IP
Multiple SSL Sites [one] IP
I am looking into a method of hosting multiple SSL Enabled CMS Type Sites
(I.E. Mambo Server for example or even PHPBB, for all whom may wonder). The
issue is this; I am under [one] public IP Address. Although IIS will allow
me to host as many sites as my server can handle under one address utilizing
'host name headers'. SSL does not work in such a way. My "true" question is
how do I go about hosting multiple SSL sites under [one] IP Address.
I have been thinking and have not got around to testing, but what if, and
that a big [if]. If I would NAT my Public IP Address to a subnet and
somehow point the traffic to an internal server hosting sites and give that
server multiple addresses. Then again, what ever device that at the edge of
the network would have to know where to direct each sites request.
I am a bit lost, can someone assist me here.

Disclaimer popup for Basic Challenge response
Hi all , I am interested to know if it is possible with code or 3rd party
tools to enable a disclaimer to appear prior to logging on to a web site via
IIS 6 with Basic challenge response enabled only. I am happy for this
discaimer to be a part of the actual logon box if it is possible to edit
that box ? Or as a seperate popup box that needs to be closed prior to the
actual logon box appearing.
Any thoughts ?
Cheers for now

running executable from asp.net on IIS
Hi,
I'm running an asp.net application on IIS (Windows XP pro, dev machine).
The app must call an exe in order to run an API, but in the doc it says we
must redirect to the .exe, but IIS asks me for my credentials every time
(username/password) even if I don't have any authentication enabled in the
app. The Execution Permission is set to "Scripts and Executables" for the
folder in IIS. anonymous can read, list and execute and ASPNET(user) too.
Am-I missing something? is there something else I must do?

New to IIS
I just installed IIS (Ver. 5.1) on my computer (Windows XP MCE2004) to
experiment with using it as a web server and I am confused about a few
things.
1) Why am I prompted to enter a username/password now when I go to certain
websites if I have the anonymous access box un-checked in directory
security?
2) How do I publish a page so that it can be accessed from beyond my
network? I am unclear what url would need to be typed for someone else to
access the page that I create.
3) I have my own domain name already. Can I host my site on this computer
using that domain name?
I know that these questions are really broad and I apologise if my level of
knowledge is far below the standards for this group. I have looked at the
help files for IIS and they are not very helpful at all. If anyone can point
me in the direction of a good online resource for setting up and maintaining
a file server using IIS I would be eternally grateful.
If someone can provide me with the help I am seeking I promise I wont ask
for any help using the SMTP features.......OK, I lied. I might ask about
that too. :-)
Thank you for your consideration,

Can't get IIS installed on XP Home?
I have XP home with SP2 installed. I am trying to upgrade with my WinXP
Pro CD, which says version 2002 on it. My current installation says
Windows XP Home, Version 2002, but I can't upgrade. I get a message
saying the versio installed is newer than the one I'm trying to
install. I just wanted to upgrade to take advantage of IIS to do some
development, but this is failing. Are there other options? I know
Apache has an available ASP "tranlator" of sorts, but that doesn't seem
to be as compatible as I want (ie: 100% or better, please). I have
Macromedia Studio MX, which provides a developer's version of Cold
fusion, but I don't know what that offers. Can someone suggest a
solution to this headache?

About malicious traffic and how to identify it...
I`m not sure if interpretation what I do about malicious traffic
(external/internal) is correct or maybe this concept is very subjective or
complex.
Anyway, I understand for malicious traffic like all traffic
(external/internal) able to go against good use of resources afecting
performance, services, ..., between one or more machines and can be intended
(e.g. virus/trojans) or unintended (e.g. bugs, misconfiguration, p2p).
I've read about network analyzers/monitoring like sniffers and MS Network
Monitor/Ethereal tools between others like ISA logs BUT once inside of them
I can`t identify malicious traffic.
I have spoke with experts in matter and always they recommend to use
sniffers and similar tools but to the question "how can I identify malicious
traffic once inside of them utilities?" they respond vaguely and evasively.
Have this traffic some clue (protocol, port, frame, size, ...) that help to
identify it?
For that I really appreciate any kind of help can guide me to identify
malicious traffic (internal) in LAN environment.
Of course any commenst/suggestions/recommendations will be appreciated.

Progammatic Health Monitoring
I would like to integrate my F5 load balancer with IIS health state, using
its support for agent-based monitoring. I must write a windows service that
responds to a special TCP request from the F5 with a numerical value between
1-100 indicating the health of a given web application. This value can be
based on any measure; I want to sample IIS's internal health measure, since
IIS has the necessary in-depth knowledge about process health, especially in
gardening scenarios.
I have found high-level measures in the WMI interface (started/stopped). I
am aware of many IIS perfticks but no single overall indicator.
An alterative that I am considering is to query MOM 2005 for the health
state of a given site. This would allow the IIS Management Pack to
participate in load balancing, but its existing health measurements might be
unsufficiently accurate.
Some comments would be much appreciated! Tag: Service Account IIS 6.0 Tag: 378366
Pictures don't display on intranet site
Hello,
I have an intranet site running on IIS 6. Probably about 80% of the
time I navigate to the page, the images don't display (I just get the
red X). If I click refresh, they appear. The site was created using
Publisher 2003, and the images are a variety of jpg, gif, and bmp. Does
anyone have any ideas on what could be going on here?
Thanks in advance,

Sending credentials to IIS6 directly from form
Is there a simple way to send user credentials directly with a request
to the IIS.
What I want to do: the user logs in at server A, a Tomcat server. I
want the Tomcat server to send a redirect to the browser directing to
server B, an IIS 6.
Along with this redirect I want to send the user credentials, so that
the user must not login again. I am aware of the security problem of
this approach which I can accept for some reasons.
If I had a form based authentication I would be able to emulate the
form in the redirect page and send the credentials - basically a self
firing form. I also found some hints about ISAPI filters, but I simply
would need more detailed information on how to use it. Especially
whether there is an existing filter for me purpose.
Can someone help me out with a hint?
Thanks HW

How do you set the SPN for a IIS site with host header and tcp por
How do you set the SPN for an IIS site using a TCP other than 80, an DNS like
name.name.org and a host header configured like name.name.org with a TCP port
matching the site?
I can open the web site with http://name.name.org:portnumber and it
authenticates to the web site. When I do something on the site that goes to
the database it fails the double hop passing of the authentication.
I tried adding a SPN using something like this and it still fails to
authenticate to the database server.
setspn -A http/name.name.org:portnumber servername
Any ideas?

Redirecting <http://> to <https://> in IIS6
Hi,
I'm just about about to update our Outlook Web Access to use <https://>. How
can I set up redirection in IIS6 so anyone going to the old <http://>
address automatically gets redirected to the secure site?
I'm running Windows and Exchange 2003 in native mode.
My knowledge of IIS is very limited so the more detailed the instructions
you can give me the better.
Thanks,
Curtis.

"ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_RESET" in isapi filter using winhttp
Hi,
I have developed a filter which does proxying. This filter checks
against database the existence of requested site on the current server
and if it does not then forwards the same request to another server
using WinHTTP services.
Everything works fine when i debug in Visual Studio or view Debug
outputs in "DebugView". But i dont see any response on the browser.
Instead it says "Internal Server error" or "Page cannot be displayed".
Here is my code:
DWORD CRoutingFilterFilter::OnPreprocHeaders(CHttpFilterContext*
pContxt,
PHTTP_FILTER_PREPROC_HEADERS pHeaderInfo)
{
DWORD dwBuffSize;
int retCode;
pCtxt=pContxt;
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: In Preproc Headers");
retCode = prepareWinHttpReqHeader();
char Hostbuf[256];
DWORD Hostbufsz = sizeof(Hostbuf);
BOOL bRet = pHeaderInfo->GetHeader(pCtxt->m_pFC, "Host:",Hostbuf,
&Hostbufsz);
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: After HostHeader");
char Urlbuf[256];
DWORD Urlbufsz = sizeof(Urlbuf);
BOOL bHeader = pHeaderInfo->GetHeader(pCtxt->m_pFC, "url",Urlbuf,
&Urlbufsz);
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: After UrlHeader");
CString HostString(Hostbuf);
CString UrlString(Urlbuf);
int MigStatus = WheretoGo(HostString);
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: After WheretoGo");
if(MigStatus==0)
{
GetRemoteResource();
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: After GetRemoteResource");
pContxt->AddResponseHeaders(responseHeader.AllHeaders,0);
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: After AddResponseHeaders");
pContxt->ServerSupportFunction(SF_REQ_SEND_RESPONSE_HEADER,NULL,NULL,NULL);
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: After ServerSupport");
dwBuffSize = sizeof(responseHeader.Body);
pContxt->WriteClient(responseHeader.Body,&responseHeader.szBody,0);
OutputDebugString("Routing Filter: After WriteClient");
return SF_STATUS_REQ_HANDLED_NOTIFICATION;
}
else
return SF_STATUS_REQ_NEXT_NOTIFICATION;
}
The above function call some other functions.
I am also using a header watcher plug-in for IE Browser which says
"ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_RESET" while the debug tool shows no error
and is working fine till the end.
Somebody please help me out. I am unable to find out whats wrong with. Tag: Service Account IIS 6.0 Tag: 378345
