        • ISAP filter in IIS 5 and IIS6, error message When I manage an IIS 5 or IIS 6 site, I get an error message, "unexpected error 0x800cc801 occurred" when i click on the ISAP filter tab. This occurs on two seperate machines an IIS 5 and IIS 6 machine. Neither website have a ISAPI filter defined. Any idea how to troubleshoot this error message? • IIS - Server Application Error Hello, I've been having some problems with my servers crashing throughout the day, the typical error is "Server application Error" and it starts serveing that to all of our customers...the fix is to reboot IIS. I have installed IISState and this morning it happend again, so I was able to run IISState. We run a ASP.net application, and I'm going to paste the logs from IISState. • Anyone can solve my problem related to IIS6 Hello Everyone, I facing bad problem with IIS6. We are basically in software consulting type firm. Previously we was using windows 2000 advance server that time and it's for test enviourment and other machines also place into test enviourment not connected to internet. My windows 2k server is IIS and dns i created multiple web sites on that and created forward and reversse lookup according to web sites domain name. I put my this server ip address to client machine as dns and gateway so when i ping to domain web sites its pinging and i can access web sites and testing it. • webdav + virtual directories It seems that it cant be done. I am trying to setup webdav on a win2k server. The problem is that the directory is on a network drive, so when the user authenticates to iis everything is fine, but then iis authenticates to the network drive with the supplied credentials in the iis properties, and all effective ntfs permission that the original user that logged in with are lost becuase it will use the iis suplied credentials to authenticate. Is there a way around this? I want iis to use the credentials supplied by the user at the time of login to authenticate to the network drive. • Multiple Websites for Frontpage users on a W2003/IIS6 server Hi, I am trying to set up 250 odd websites for students to publish to using Frontpage 2002. I have given each website a DNS entry pointing to the server and have automated the setting up of the websites using a combination of "iisweb /create"; "owsadm -o install" & cacls. I have not found a way to automate setting up the individual students as an AdvAuthor so have had to do this manually. However IIS keeps on dropping out on me during this stage displaying variations on "Can't display this page in DOS mode". Am I trying to ask the impossible here? Does anyone have an Idiot's Guide to setting up multiple website in IIS6, or even better a fool-proof script. If nobody can help with this in IIS can anyone recommend a different solution (e.g Apache, etc). Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348530

        • Questions regarding user access rights I am asking the following in hopes that someone can provide me with their opinion on the following matters: 1. It is my opinion that a malicious user cannot harm a server if granted access via FTP to a single directory with a preset quota 'size' limit and read/write ability to the server. Am I mistaken? 2. I am guessing that if I create a single directory, such as a cgi-bin directory and allow execute ability, a malicious user can upload an executable that rapidly consumes processing cycles. I'd imagine that setting cpu throttling for each user in advance for the account would prevent problems. Also, if that account is limited to that directory, I am guessing that damage cannot be done elsewhere, such as deleting files in other directories where access was not granted. Is this an incorrect assumption? Thank you, Fernando L. Arredondo Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348509

        • IIS ASP Can't Receive Sockets Howdy People, Grateful for any help people might have on this problem. I have an asp page running some vbscript. The vbscript instances a COM dll. The COM dll sends a UDP message to a process running on another server somewhere, then blocks waiting for the response. My problem is that the response is never received by the dll. I've tried running a sniffer on the web server, and it shows that the response is coming back as expected, coming to the correct port number and everything, but the dll just sits there and receives nothing. Any clues what's going on? MIKE Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348493

When a user tries to create a new WebApplication under http://localhost/<username>/<ApplicationName> they receive an error about the file share path not mapping appropriately the web location. My question is why does it pull the wrong file share path and how is the information determined? When attempting to get a Web Page from a SSL Web Site on IIS 5 using IE6 SP1 located on the same computer as the Web Server I get the following error: "Page Cannont be Displayed ... Cannot Find Server or DNS Error" Read on before you respond!!! When I try: http://10.1.1.80 I get the Web Page http://sitename.domain.com I get the Web Page https://10.1.1.80 I get the Web Page however I also get a warning that certificate is invalid or there is a name mismatch the installed certificate's commion name is sitename.domain.com (error is expected) https://sitename.domain.com I get "Page cannot be Displayed .." System is W2K with SP4, IE6 Sp1, IIS 5, all available updates from Windows Update Service - nothing else - all newly installed. Web site is 2nd Website and has Certificate from Enterprise Root CA. Certificate appears to work using IP address - not DNS/common name. Default Web site is installed and active. It has no certificate. Web site content is a simple HTML file that has been assigned as the default document. The DNS/Common name sitename.domain.com is resolvable from both the intranet as well as the internet - nslookup reports the approppriate IP addresses in each case. The DNS/Cmmon name sitename.domain.com is not the same as hostname.domain.com. The behavior is the same when I attempt to get the Web Page from an another host on the internet. I have reviewed the issue on the Newsgroups and have attempted the following: KB290391 Removed the SSL (443) binding from default Web Site. KB259349 Disabled Socket Pooling. KB292296 Assured that sspifilt.dll is listed in Master Properties. KB324839 Assured that sspifilt.dll is NOT listed in the Registry. KB292296 Assured that SSL Post is entered as 443. KB292296 Assured that 0.0.0.0:443 not bound to All Unassigned. KB292296 Assured that 10.1.1.80:443 web site address is bound to SSL. KB260096 Assigned and removed a certificate on the Default Web Site. Finally I tried the sequence described in KB265847, KB228821, and KB228836. This resulted in a certificate issued to IWAM_CERTSERVERNAME rather than sitename.domain.com. Obviously it didn'y work. I ran both SSLDiag/Simulate SSL Handshake and wfetch. • BUG: XP SP2/FrontPage XP CONFIGURATION: A fresh install of XP SP2 and associated updates, and a fresh install of FrontPage XP, along with a fresh install of IIS 5.1 on XP Pro. Using FrontPage to access a website locally set up and configured inside of IIS 5.1, performing the following to connect to the site: 1) Open Web... 2) Typing in: http://www.website.name/ 3) Clicking on Publish Web... 4) Typing in: http://localhost/copy It published just fine. Everything looked swell. I then opened http://localhost/copy with FrontPage in the following manner:-) 1) Open Web... 2) Typed in: http://localhost/copy I then clicked on: 1) Tools 2) Server 3) Permissions... On the Settings tab (this part doesn't seem to really matter I don't think), I clicked on: * Use unique permissions for this web. Then I went to the next tab, Groups, and noticed: Everyone was listed as a group there. I clicked on Remove and waited a moment while FrontPage removed the permissions. FINE! ALL is well. Then I tested the web out by typing into the address bar of the browser: http://localhost/copy It didn't quite seem right. Something was messed up. I won't get into that part though, because the real bug is when: I tried to put the Everyone group back into the Everyone tab. After all, I had permission to delete the group. I surely must have permission to recreate it. I am the administrator and I am logged in as the administrator. :-O Ugh oh. BUG!!! "Server error: Getting the list of domains failed." Nice user friendly thing. After all I am not currently connected to a domain and it didn't need a list of domains to delete Everyone. In the next dialog in the Add side I could type in the Everyone group there and it added just fine. When I did that the permissions that were granted only included the List permission and nothing else. Now that is the bug. I have a question about setting up permissions through IIS, which probably should be asked in IIS so thus the crossposting. Should the Everyone group be used if the web is only for internal network configuration? And if it is not used, what kind of security issues might be present? If the thing becomes available only to logged in users, someone can brute force hack the password? What stops that and how do you stop such attacks? I am currently under the thoughts that the XP firewall is stopping such attacks. Thanks to all that can help, Jim Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348463

They both appear to work?? The results are included below I changed the actual site name and domain name. wfetch ================================= started....resolve hostname "sitename.domain.com"WWWConnect::Connect("10.6.21.80","443")\n source port: 2598\r\n REQUEST: **************\nGET / HTTP/1.1\r\n Host: sitename.domain.com\r\n Accept: */*\r\n \r\n RESPONSE: **************\nHTTP/1.1 200 OK\r\n Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0\r\n X-Powered-By: ASP.NET\r\n Content-Location: https://sitename.domain.com/Default.htm\r\n Date: Tue, 02 Nov 2004 20:08:37 GMT\r\n Content-Type: text/html\r\n Accept-Ranges: bytes\r\n Last-Modified: Mon, 01 Nov 2004 19:43:07 GMT\r\n ETag: "aacc9124bc0c41:d8f"\r\n Content-Length: 546\r\n \r\n <HTML>\r\n <HEAD>\r\n <META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">\r\n <META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="-1">\r\n <META HTTP-EQUIV="Cache-Control" CONTENT="Private">\r\n <META HTTP-EQUIV="Cache-Control" CONTENT="no-cache">\r\n <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">\r\n <TITLE>High Aspect Development</TITLE>\r\n </HEAD>\r\n <BODY>\r\n <Center>\r\n <p><font face="Comic Sans MS" size="6">High Aspect Development</font></p>\r\n <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS" size="3">Default Page</font></p>\r\n </CENTER>\r\n </BODY>\r\n </HTML>\r\n \r\n finished. • IIS event log problems Hi there, We are having a few problems with our iss6 server. We recently upgraded from win2k to win2k3 and last week we were getting a number 'worker process' terminated errors. We are now getting a large number of COM+ errors such as: The run-time environment has detected an inconsistency in its internal state. This indicates a potential instability in the process that could be caused by the custom components running in the COM+ application, the components they make use of, or other factors. Error in d:\nt\com\complus\src\comsvcs\threads\stathread.cpp(284), hr = 8007000e: CSTAThread: CoGetApartmentID failed And some sites on the server are going into Server Too Busy error messages. We are running about 100 sites, dual 2gb, 2gb ram, AspEmail, AspJpeg, AspUpload, ISAPI redirect Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Marcus Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348448

        • IIS 6 serving invalid URLs We recently put a Windows 2003 web server into production and have discovered that it is serving invalid URLs. For example, the real URL for a web page on the server is http://servername/default.htm but for whatever reason the server will still serve the default.htm page even if the URL sent to the server is http://servername/default.htm/garbage.blahblah/nogood.htm. It seems that IIS 6 is just ignoring the rest of the URL after the page name, in this case default.htm, and serving up the content. This is causing a problem for the software we use to index our site as it is seeing millions of invalid URLs. This same behavior did not occur under IIS 5 as IIS 5 returned a 404 error message. Does anyone know of a way we could turn this off so the invalid URL returns a 404 message rather than the default.htm web page? Thanks much! Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348439

        • IIS6 - Disaster Recovery -IISCNFG - changing Anonymous User In IIS6 we can use IISCNFG.VBS to export a copy of the metabase to a static XML file. This same file can be imported into a Web Servers Metabase. We would like to use this functionality to support disaster recovery when a (non-web farm) Web Server crashes. Using The import/export functionality may cause some problems when applied to a recovery web server whose name is different than the source web server. For example. the FTP Service section of the metabase exports looks like: <IIsFtpService Location="/LM/MSFTPSVC" AdminACL="49634462a00000005... (a very long number) AllowAnonymous="TRUE" AnonymousOnly="FALSE" AnonymousUserName="IUSR_SourceServerName" AnonymousUserPass="4963446270000... (a very long number) Prior to Import into the new "Target Machine" we would like to change the AnonymousUserName from the Source Name to the Target Name (like: AnonymousUserName="IUSR_TargetServerName" ) But how would we change the Anonymous User Password (which is encrypted in some UNDOCUMENTED way)??? thanks. dlr Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348437

        • Application pool terminated unexpectedly Hello, I'm experiencing what appears to be the same problem as other people. That is, IIS stops serving pages with the message "A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '1908'. The process exit code was '0x80'". Now the cause and background for my case are likely different from others, so I'll explain. We are currently rebuilding from scratch a NLB, Application center clustered (2 members) web server environment due to an irreparable configuration mistake on the initial 2 servers. Without going into unnecessary detail, the initial 2 servers both got built with their partitions completely out of whack. This presents a problem for disaster recovery, and needed to be fixed. So in rebuilding the boxes, part of the standard procedure is to run vulnerability scans against the machine to make sure there are no 'surprises'. We have always used Nessus for this. As it stands now I have a condition where almost every scan I run against the rebuilt web server causes the message below to show up in the event log. Along with this, the web server reports Service Unavailable when you try to access any page after the message below is generated. I have tried to narrow down specific problem areas of the otherwise standard practice scan I'm running, but have only succeeded in frustrating myself. Whenever I think I have the problem isolated to a specific function, it happens again. I'm not asking for help related to Nessus, since this is obviously not the place for that. I'm convinced there is either some misconfiguration or other problem that exists and is causing the crash. I've tried to follow several other threads that I've seen with the same exit code and error messages, but there never seems to be a solution in the thread. I've tried using the debugging tools (IISdump, windbg) but it is not very easy for me to comprehend :) I'll attach what I had below. Any help would be appreciated! • FTP Problems on 2003 Web Edt I have a Windows 2003 Web Server I have my websites under d:\inetpub\wwwroot\sitename I've then created a non isolated ftp site pointing to d:\inetpub\ftproot I have then created virtual directorys pointing to each of the sites that I want to be able to ftp two. Now some of the problems im having. I have assigned permissions to site1 for user1 so that they can ftp to the site and upload and make changes, but they can also make changes to site2 although the ntfs permissions say they only have read only rights, this has me slightly puzzled. Also when the administrator logs into the root of the ftp site.. surely that account should be able to see the virtuals but they arnt there, you have to type the path in to get into them. Is there a easier way to achive what im wanting to do? or can someone point me in the right direction please Kind Regards, Darren Bolton Tag: IIS - Server Application Error Tag: 348421
