    - What services can I turn off? Hi Folks, I am coming from a UNIX/Linux world here, so please be kind! I have recently installed IIS 5.5 under Windows 2000. I have patched this server with all the service packs and hot fixes available, and followed many security guides on how to lock the server down. Under UNIX/Linux, I would normally disable all services and software that isn't needed, so for instance if the server was running Apache I would turn off finger, SMB/Samba and NFS etc. etc. I am aware that I can do this under Windows 2000 from the Services control panel, but what I can't find is a guide to what I can safely turn off for the web server to just be a web server. I did try and turn things off that I thought wouldn't be needed, but I ended up getting into a bit of a mess with dependencies and chose to re-install the server rather than work out what needs what :) Most or some of the services are self explanitory, but can anyone point me out to a guide where I can learn more about the services, in particular what I can safely turn off on an IIS server that is only serving web pages and isn't part of a domain or used for anything else oher than serving web pages.     - Tracing an Access Violation in ISAPI dll We are getting an intermittent access violation in our ISAP dll, we're suspecting it's when new thread(s) are being created but as we cant reproduce it in our test environment, even using Homer, the stress tester we're having problems tracing the cause. I've been looking at IISState over at iisfaq.com. Will an access violation in a thread be caught automatically by IISState if I start it using hardcrash (-hc) or softcrash (-sc) or will I have to wait till the client reports the exception and run iisstate manually.     - Seeking Advice - IIS 5.0 or Apache Looking for advice, thoughts, pros & cons, etc. I'm considering setting up a web server, at home, on a third PC running Win2K Pro and either IIS 5.0 or Apache software. The server would be connected to the net via my router and a cable modem and I am thinking of trying out the TZO.com premier package that would give me a static IP address. There's no particular reason to do this as opposed to using a web hosting service other than I just want to learn about web servers, email servers, etc. Maybe even do some small scale web hosting of my own - again just for the experience. I have no prior experience with web servers, but I would like to check them out. So, my questions would seem to be: 1) Am I nuts? (Not a general question, just confined to this project) 2) Should I use IIS 5.0 or Apache? (Leaning towards IIS 5.0) 3) Any particular hardware considerations?     - Multiple worker processes for a single application in a application Hello All, In IIS 6.0 We have a concept of worker processes and application pools. As I understand it, we can have multiple worker process per appliction pool. Each worker process is dedicated to a pool. If I assign only one application to a applicaton pool and have multiple worker processes assigned to that pool. Will my application be processed by many worker processes? Why I am asking this question is because there are certain resources which are in-memory and are shared at an application level. For example the database connection pool, or some XML files initialized via a static contructor. Now if multiple process are executing my requests, then how do they share data (if they do at all). Or each process replicates its own resources. This is important to me, because lets say I am connection to a datasource for which I have a 20 concurrent user license. So I create a pool of 20 connections and manage it. This pool is in-memory initialized via a static constructor. Now if each worker process tries to load its own in-memory pool, then only one process would function because rest will be denied the connection. I also have no way of knowing how many worker process will run at any moment because they are run based on demand by the IIS so I cannot split the load amongst multiple processes at an application level. To me it appears that different worker processes cannot be used to execute the requests for one application ... but then MS documentation talks about Web Garden where different worker processes execute requests for an application domain.     - IIS 5.0 - FTP - Can't get directory listing Hello, I've set up an FTP Site on Windows XP and i'm using a LinkSys Router. Whenever I try to access my FTP, i'm able to connect to my FTP server but can't view the directoy listing. Tried without the Router and it works fine. Contacted LinkSys and they told me to set my Server to accept Passive Mode (Transfer) and will solve the problem. I've looked on the Microsoft TechNet on how to enable that and they talk about doing it by editing the MetaBase but I have no clue where I can edit that or what i'm suppose to be looking for.     - remote com+ server.createobject failed On Jan 8 a poster named Alex submitted a message about this that was never answered Like Alex, I can get access through an ASP page to my VB6 generated DCOM ActiveX.exe object if I authenticate as Admin through the browser, turning off anonymous access to the web site. But I can't seem to get access otherwise, receiving an ASP 0178 error instead. This is really aggravating because it works fine when the COM client machine is running W2K Server/IIS5. My strong suspicion is that either the updated COM+ or IIS components in W2003 are related to the problem I'm using the VB6 Packaging and deployment wizard to package up the client, which then includes the vbr and tlb files in the distribution exe that I run on the COM client. I have made sure that these files, along with the vb6 runtime client, all have iusr_<machinename> read/exec abilities. Under the component manager, the COM component I've installed shows up in 'DCOM Config', not 'COM+ Applications', and runs under the launching user account Any help would this would be most appreciated!     - read and execute rights disappear Hi, I use IIS to deploy a .NET windows applications (no-touch deployment). So I a keep a virtual directory that contains exe's and dll's. The users run the exe's from the virtual directory. This works fine. The thing is, everytime I update the directory with new files or if I update config files, the read and execute rights on the virtual directory have disappeared. Has anybody encountered this before?     - IIS 5 stops reponding under moderate load - ISAPI ADO app I have an ISAPI app on a client's IIS server (W2k, IIS 5, sp4), which, when under load from a number of web users (no more than 40 - but all during the same several hours) IIS stops responding to any request. We have tried to restart IIS and Unload the executable, but the only way to get IIS back up is to reboot the server. Then everthing is fine for the rest of the day. We have another ISAPI app that does not access ADO which has been in use for months on the same server with no problems. It was only when we added the new ISAPI app that accesses a SQLserver via ADO that the problem began I've checked the logfile log, but no errors are recorded. (just love IIS), no errors in the Event viewer, and nothing is returned to the browser, other than the standard browser timeout message There was one instance where I saw the hang happen, I restarted IIS - which seem to restart, but still no reponse from IIS, but I did then notice "500 ISAPI out of process" errors in the IIS logfile. I assume that this was caused by IIS being cleared, but some other condition was preventing the ISAPI's to work - maybe the ADO connection??     - WWWP & SMTP Hangs on Startup I have Symantec antivirus client and Symantec Firewall running on a Windows XP machine. I had to disable these programs to even install IIS. After that, IIS came up just fine. I rebooted the machine and both The world wide web publishing and SMTP were hung on starting.     - Problem with change password I have a problem with getting the IIS password changing tool (ISSADMPWD). Here's the situation. The server is a Windows 2003 cluster (upgraded from Windows 2000) running Exchange 2003. The cluster is a member of a domain with the "primary" domain controller running Windows 2003 (again, upgraded from Windows 2000) and the other two domain controllers running Windows 2000. OWA is working normally. As specified in Q327134 & Q297121, I've created the virtual directory and set PasswordChangeFlags to 0. The site has a valid SSL certificate and security is set to anonymous and basic authentication for just the IISADMPWD virtual directory. The problem arrises after the user enters their user information in aexp2b.asp and clicks on OK. The GetObject and OpenDSObject return with error -2147024891 (General access denied error). Even blatently wrong user information (as long as it passes basic error checking) returns the error. Clearly it's not accessing the directory.     - Faulting Application w3wp.exe Hello, We are receiving intermittent problems with the Windows 2003 IIS 6 worker process (w3wp.exe) leading to unacceptable periods of downtime on our new public web server. The user receives a 503 Server Busy error during this downtime and an IIS restart is usually required to kick things off again. The Event Viewer logs the application faults and every time we log into the box through Terminal Service, a 'w3wp.exe failed, do you want to tell M$ about this problem' box appears. I have been advised to run the iisstate utility to try and find out the process/thread that may be leading to the fault. w3wp.exe failed earlier today and I have posted the log file that iisstate generated at http://www.southend.ac.uk/IISState-3228.log.txt. Does anyone know the best way to take this forward? I read somewhere that M$ let you post these log files to them for analysis, but I can't see them getting back to us any time soon, even if I did manage to find the right address to send it to.     - Multi-Processor bug found in IIS 6 I have posted a similar reply to one of my other threads but i wanted to make sure this gets to the top for others to read. Over the past 2 weeks i have been working to identify a problem in IIS 6 where the application would hang for no apparent reason. Every possible debug tool had been used including IIS Crash Hang Agent, IISState, Adsutil, asp error logging, etc. No good information came out of the debug process. The application is a medium traffic website running on a MS Access 2000 DB. The problem started when the application was moved to a new server. It had been working fine on a windows 2003 server for over 3 months. Right after we moved to a new server it started to fail. I tried moving the website to countless other servers until I thought I discovered the cause to be AMD processors since it always worked on the Intel servers. After posting again here David Wang suggested it might be a multi-processor problem. After removing the second processor from the server and reconfiguring the system driver to use the uni-proecssor driver i have NOT had a problem since then. In summary... MS Access + IIS 6 + Multi-Processor Server equals a failing application. The same application on a single CPU server works perfectly. I also noticed the problem occurred more the greater the traffic to the website was. This problem may or may not be noticed on low traffic websites. Those of you who are having hangs/crashes might want to consider this a factor in troubleshooting. Does anyone know if Microsoft is aware of this bug? OS: MS Windows XP Professional IIS: IIS 5.1 IE: IE 6 It might need noting at this point that my computer hard drive has two partitions. The C: partition is FAT32 and 18.5 GB, it is used for installing programs mainly. The D: partition is also FAT32 and 18.5 GB, it is used for data mainly. The Inetpub directory is on the C: partition. The contents of the "index.asp" page is as follows: ---------------CODE----------------- <%@ Language = "VBScript" %> <html> <body> <% response.write("test") %> </body> </html> ----------------CODE---------------- Then I want to run it so I open up IE and enter "http://localhost/index.asp" into the address bar. All I get is a blank page with "-2147467259 (0x80004005)" in the top left. If I look at View>Source it says "<html>- 2147467259 (0x80004005)</body></html>". Occassionally instead of the above numbers, it says "The RPC server is unavailable.", but after refreshing it returns to saying the "-2147467259 (0x80004005)" again. I have no idea what this problem is but nothing seems to stop it happening. I have tried re-installing IIS and still no change. If anyone can help me I would be most grateful.     - Need Help on Access Rights for FTP Home Folders My FTP server is working fine. Users have home folders under default FTP root. BillB logs in and goes to home Folder BillB. The problem is that he can go up a folder and see the folders listed in the FTP root. He can't open the folders but I don't want him to be able to list the folders. The few things I tried ended up blocking him access to his home folder in the root.     - Popup from dllhost Hi I run a website on four webservers (windows2000, SP1, IIS5.0). I use an ISAPI appl to connect to an RS/6000. 1) Don't put it on the web without a firewall.
2) See the source: http://www.microsoft.com/security/
