    - Unable to create FP Server Extensions 2002 subwebs I am logged in as admin to my very own Windows 2003 server. I have Front Page Server Extensions 2002 installed. I also have a number of Extensions 2002 subwebs that I created in the past. In the present, however, when I try to create new Extensions subwebs, I always get the following error: Unable to access configuration for Microsoft Internet Information Server. I tried to play with roles.ini file, checked and rechecked every possible permission setting I could think of, and tried the technique described in KBB 314480. Nothing helps. The only thing I can do is create the subweb as Extensions *2000*, and then manually tweak the subfolders' permissions, etc. Not at all ideal, as that way I can't deploy projects from VisualStudio .NET using FrontPage.     - adsutil.vbs changes don't take affect in IIS 5.0 With Windows 2000 server (IIS 5.0) we are trying to use the URL redirect feature of IIS. The settings in IIS will take any request for â??c2sâ?? and redirect it to the â??8097â?? port, please find the exact settings below. If I manually set up a virtual directory in IIS with a URL redirect everything seems to work, but with my automated install that sets up the IIS settings we run into some problems. After I run my automated install everything in IIS looks exactly the same as when I manually add the settings with the exception that IIS will not work correctly after the automated install. After a automated install I have tried restarting, and stopping and starting just about everything in IIS which does not seem to help. I have also tried rebooting the system after an automated install which does not seem to help either. If I manually set up IIS through the admin GUI and get everything working and then run the automated install that only contains the two lines that are specified below, then IIS does not seem to work correctly any more. After an automated install via adsutil.vbs it can also be fixed by using the admin GUI to modify the â??c2sâ?? virtual directory settings and then modify it back to the original settings (basically a way to enable the â??applyâ?? button) then selecting the â??applyâ?? button. Then IIS will work correctly. Basically it feels like the adsutil.vbs install settings do not seem to take affect until they are manually applied via the admin GUI. Any assistance in resolving this issue would greatly be appreciated. Settings in IIS that I add: To IIS we add a virtual directory named â??c2sâ?? in the â??Default Web Siteâ??     - Website will not start For some reason my default web site has quit starting. It was working fine before I installed vb.net. I could not connect vb.net because I am running IIS on Port 81 and VB.net was looking on port 80. My FTP site is running. My configuration is windows 2003 standard server with IIS 6.0.     - Maximum connections to IIS from same IP? Hi, I'm running IIS 6.0 on a W2K3 I'm wondering if there is a limit in the IIS that limits number of connections from the same IP-adress? The reason I'm asking is that we have built a webservices application (as a service) that connect to our IIS, but will there be trouble if we have many applications on a single computer that are accessing the IIS from the sam IP (other than hardware)?     - IIS6.0: unable to create virtual directory Hello, I'm trying to create a new virtual directory in IIS6.0. The creation of the virtual directory works, but when I try to access a webpage I'm always getting 404 Page cannot be found. The reason is that the owsscr.dll can't be found at /_vti_bin/owssvr.dll wich is logged in the iis logfile. Therefore its not possible to create any Web Services.     - IIS denies access to local .com folders Hello, I noticed a strange problem with IIS on my WinXP Pro SP2 machine. In my web server's directories I have some folders named like "www.site1.com", "www.site2.it", which contain the actual files of the corresponding web sites I manage. So I used to access them by typing URLs such as http://localhost/www.site1.com/ for folders contained in wwwroot, or http://localhost/mydata/www.site2.it/ when contained in the "mydata" virtual directory. I'm absolutely sure this worked fine for years. But now, IIS denies access to folders whose name ends with ".com". When the folder is in a virtual directory, I'm asked for authentication and then denied access (the error page talks about ACLs, but I have no ACLs on that virtual directory, as it resides on a FAT32 partition); when it's in wwwroot, I'm not asked for authentication, and I immediately get an error page telling instead that execution is not allowed. Everything works fine, instead, if I rename the folders to make them end in ".it" or anything else... but the problem remains if I use ".exe". So it seems like a dumb security measure, I suppose recently introduced with some WinXP upgrade. Is there a way to deactivate it?     - Awstats Hi all, I'm using Awstats on a large web site. I scheduled the launch of the following batch during the night: C:\PERL\BIN\PERL.EXE C:\\sitoweb\\stats\\awstats.pl -config=nomesito.com -update -logfile=/dir_logfiles/W3SVC1/ex%%YY-24%%MM-24%%DD-24.log The "problem" is that when the job is started and awstats.pl is analyzing the log file, CPU goes to 100% for many many minutes.     - Virtual Directory not being configured as an application hi I've been dealing with this problem for almost 2 days now. I have a virtual directory te.testing.com I need to access a page at http/te.testing.com/receivedata/receice.aspx That page saves the data sent to this URL in a database (this is in another class file) When I try to access that page I get an error: "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtua directory not being configured as an application in IIS." It works fine locally, and I can make it work if I use my workstation to connect to (not a virtual directory), but when I try conecting to the test-server, then it won't work. i've also tried to remove the program name in the IIS-config tool, and then add it again (and removing the given name). but nothing helps, I keep getting this error.     - Temporarily Take Web Site Offline What would be a good or recommended way to make a Web site in IIS6 inaccessible to users on the Internet. My situation is that I will periodically update this ASP.NET Web application. While I am making the update (which will take only a couple of minutes, max) and subsequently checking that everything works as planned after the update (which may take 5-20 minutes), I don't want any visitors to access any pages in the site.     - Serving documents with a single quote in name Hi everybody ! Has anyone dealed with this : - IIS 6.0 - 2 documents with same name, one with doc extension and one with pdf extension. Both with a single quote in name We're able to open word document but not pdf. Client gets blank page with pdf document.     - aspnet.exe running at 50% CPU I posted this earlier on but no reply. Reposted it again. I'm running IIS 6 and SQL Server 2000 on the same WS2003 machine. Recently there is a problem where the aspnet_wp.exe process is running consistently at 50% CPU for 2 days across 2 CPUs of the server. Over the IE, users are experiencing this error -> "Timeout, expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." Tried to restart the WS2003 and everything is back to normal. Is there anything wrong with the aspnet_wp.exe process. How to ensure this problem will not repeat?     - Asp.Net Visual Studio & SQL XML 3.0 Hi, I experience strange problem. I have : Windows 2000 Pro + IIS 5.0 + .Net Framework 1.1 + MS Visual Studio 2003. In some moment I install SQLXML 3.0 after this all work fine (Asp.Net applications & SQLXML applications). But I can't open any Web projects in Visual Studio.     - ASP.NET Community Starter on IIS6...login problems If I have the Community Starter Kit loaded on my workstation (XP Pro). When I login as Admin and Admin, I get the Admin menu item to appear in the menu bar and everthing works great. I also know that I'm logged in because "Login" changes to "Logoff". But with the same Community Starter Kit on a Windows 2003(IIS6) machine. When I login as Admin and Admin, the screen refreshes, but no Admin menu item. And "Login" stays as "Login"...so I'm not really logged in. I know that the authentication piece is working because if I put in a bad password it tells me so.     - Basic authentication Hi, I have an application using RDS to call the BO on the same server. Now the change we are doing is to call the BO on different server. But when the call is made it is asking for the User login & password. I do not want to show the user login dialog once more time in the application.     - IIS 5.1 execution questions - application failed to initialize Hi, I'm more of a programmer than an administrator, so please excuse me if these questions are dumb. I've spent a couple of hours hunting around for answers, to no avail. I'm running IIS 5.1 on my XP Pro development system. I'm trying to shell out to an exe (in an ASP page) using code like: set wshShell = createobject("wscript.shell") wshShell.run "C:\SomeFolder\createOutputFile.exe",,true where createOutputFile.exe is a VB (or perhaps some other kind) of executable that takes a few seconds to create a report. I can run that code from VB, but I can't seem to get any variants of it to run from asp - I always get the "application failed to initialize" message. This is true whether I leave the full file path in, or copy the executable to the web site and use either a web address or an unqualified file path (i.e., either wshShell.run "//localhost/myWeb/createOutputFile.exe",,true or wshShell.run "createOutputFile.exe",,true I suspect a permissions problem, but I'm not sure how to deal with it.     - cluster with IIS I am running a two-node win2000 cluster with IIS configured as a cluster service. On both nodes, the IIS admin/web services are set to automatic startup. This was working fine for the longest time except a few days ago, the IIS service on the inactive node started to complain in EV about not being able to write log fies. This is expected because the active node has the shared storage. However, we were not getting this error before. The only thing that has changed is I moved the shared storage from one device to another on our SAN. We also started to see a weird behavior where the cluster is failing over to the inactive node for no apparent reason. We have run IISSync several times. Any idea what could be going on?     - Cannot run in low isolation mode I'm running IIS 6 in IIS 5 mode. I set up the virtual directories to run my app. in low isolation mode but when I try to start up my app, it gets put in a dllhost wrapper. It used to work just fine but I tried setting up a COM+ package for my app. (which didn't work) and I tried to undo what I had done but something is still set to cause IIS to always start me up in dllhost. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works. I'm getting a little desperate because this is my main development system and I'm not getting my other work done. Any help greatly appreciated.     - Web page is not updating? Running server 2003 and IIS. I have a virtual directory with some .htm documents in it. When I make changes to one of them, the changes dont show up on the web. If I access the file directly I see my changes, but if I access through the website, i see the old version of the file. Even if I delete the file, I still see the old version. In the same virtual directory, I have another file and when I update it, i can see the changes right away.     - can not start IIS Hi , I am unable to start IIS on my machine on which I had installed IIS. Afetr Installing IIS , I verified that it was running fine(I checked from computermanagement and then to services as well as http://localhost) After Installing IIS I Installed complete VS.NET 2003 including its webdevelopment feature. Now I am unable to start IIS and I get the following error in the event log.     - IIS 6.0 Anonymous Login:::Please help We upgraded our NT Server to Win 2003 server running iis 6.0. The upgrade seemed flawless, and then we installed the windows updates from the microsoft site. We were running iis 4.0 and now since we run to 6.0 the anonymous login doesnt work for anyone visiting our site. We have checked to make sure the password and anonymous login is correct. The iusr_machinename account does have access to the directory and the account in configured correctly. This is really pretty sad. It seems from what we can tell that iis 6.0 running in worker process mode isnt syncing the anonymous password with the user account.     - IIS6 / SSL / Certificate / SSLDiag error Hey all, here is the question of the day! We have 2 webservers. We setup SSL encyption about 2 months ago but I was not here to test it out. The certificates seem to be installed okay. However, when you type https://localhost/test.aspx you get "Page can not be displayed". However you take the "s" off and you get the page just fine. I run SSLDiag's and get this error, and it is the only error: #WARNING: You have a private key that corresponds to this certificate but CryptAcquireCertificatePrivateKey failed'. I have been doing some research and someone suggested to try this to fix the problem. This is my production environment, so I need a reason why this is going to fix the problem and what this dependancy allows what service to access what? Basically, when I make this change and it fixes it, why did this happen? Also if there is another fix with this problem, please advise! ----------------------- To resolve this issue try following steps. 1.Set the correct permission for Machinekey folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys 2.Add administrator and system Full Control Permissions. 3.Restart IIS HTH, Thanks Ganesh Anekar Microsoft Developer Support Internet Information Server And then the repsonse....     - IIS 6 / MDB (ADO/ODBC) / ... Hi guys, i quick overview to our situation: I installed a windows server 2003 (web edition) and wanted to move some sites from our customers running on NT 4.0. I got into the same problems as on NT -> after a certain time web pages with DSN/ODBC/ADO-Connections don't answer. We created a VERY simple asp page (open db -> read -> print -> close) and tested if there are problems on windows or the customer pages...     - Why has installing IIS messed up my search capabilities? Scenario: IIS5.1 (WinXP-pro, SP1) I installed IIS, and two things stop working properly : (1) Search for a word or phrase in the file (search all files/folders) in the Windows Explorer search (the one with the puppy) and all you get is file names containing the key word (2) An existing VB routine for listing files to be processed (using Application.FileSearch) seems to be stuck with some kind of cached directory to work with, because I can move files in and out of the .LookIn directory and the routine doesn't see them.     - 2003 Server ASP.NET Problem (IE Only!) I have an ASP.NET application that works fine on most Windows machines. I installed it on a new 2003 server and now I am having problems. I set the security settings in IIS to serve ASP, and almost everything else. When using our app, the user enters his login and password on the first screen and clicks "Login", but the app doesn't do anything. No postback, no error, nothing. When I run the app locally on the 2003 box, the user clicks "Login" and all of the validators on the page show up (they shouldn't), and it still does nothing.     - Unable to create virtual directory from file Hi, I'm trying to export/import a virtual directory in IIS6 running on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Service pack 1 RC1. I've done this before on other machines, and it usually works like a charm. (btw. this is what I'm trying to do: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817379) Exporting a configuration works, but when I pick a file to import and klick 'read file' nothing happends! No errors, no dialogs just nothing! I also discovered that if I choose to encrypt the configuration when I export it, it is saved as plain xml anyway! I suspect that this has something to do with service pack 1, but I dont think it's worth uninstalling SP1 just to find out. Everything else seem to work as expected. This is done by a HTTP request in server sided SAP.Net code.     - IUSR password needs resetting every reboot Every month or two, our W2K web server gets rebooted, and more often than not, the first time you view our web site (IIS 5), you see a login prompt asking for Windows credentials. I've found that the only way to view the web site is to change the IUSR_MACHINE password in compmgmt.msc and then update it in inetmgr under Master WWW Service Properties | Directory Security tab | Anonymous account account. To get a few .asp pages on the site also working, you have to update the IWAM_MACHINE password in compmgmt.msc, and then update that in Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Component Services | My Computer | COM+ Applications | IIS Out-of-Process Pooled Applications | Identity. With the IIS password, after having updated it, I always check "Allow IIS to control password", but this problem continually recurs. Does anyone know why this might be happening? I've got a sneaking feeling it may be that there's some local policy that's been altered that might be causing this (perhaps by preventing IIS to manage the password), but don't know which one.     - Why aspnet_wp.exe is running consistently at 50% CPU I'm running IIS 6 and SQL Server 2000 on the same WS2003 machine. Recently there is a problem where the aspnet_wp.exe process is running consistently at 50% CPU across 2 CPUs of the server. Over the IE, users are experiencing this error -> "Timeout, expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." Tried to restart the WS2003 and everything is back to normal.     - loading html pages in frames We have a fairly simply web app that for some reason is having problems on 2003 IIS 6 Basically if the htm file exists in this directory we show a link on the web page for the user to click on. It then loads that htm in the second frame. We have this working at several sites. We have named the frame and when we create the link we set the target to the name of the frame. Now then that link is in a virtual directory that is a subdirectory of another virtual directory . I added the first virtual directory to the default web site.( ie. To the default web a virtual directory call temp and then added a virtual directory called data in temp.) When setting up the virutal directories I used the defaults Read and Execute Scripts and made no other changes. On the actual file folders I have given Everyone and IUSR account full access. In WebServices extensions I have allowed Active Server Pages. On the server when we click on the link we get a momentary downloading window like you get when the browser is downloading a file it can't handle itself and then it loads it in a new browser window. The address bar doesn't show the actual url but shows the actual path in the temp directory(ie. c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp....) So it does download the file. I have found that even if I copy the shortcut and paste it in the address bar I get the same behaviour. It momentarily shows the file download and then launches it from the temp cache. So I get the same the same kind of behaviour so I don't think it has anything to do with the link. On any other computer when I click on the link nothing happens. I've even checked the web server logging files. No request is ever sent to the server if its not initiated on the server. If I copy the shortcut to the address bar, the html file loads correctly in the same window. Now I've also just tried putting an html file in the temp folder and trying to load it but I get the same behaviour as trying to load from the temp->data virtual folder. The html file does load if put in wwwroot. Now for the weirdest part of this. Say I decide to create a new virtual directory off the default web and will just say I call it dummy and then I add a data virtual folder to it. These virtual folders point to the same folders the others did. Sometimes the html page will load correctly on the server with the link. It won't work on any other computers though only the server. Now another catch if I try to load a different htm file out of the folder it displays the momentary download and displays the html file in a new browser window. Now I thought this might be a problem with the temp cache so I closed out of IE. the opened it back up and deleted all the temp inet files. I can still load the original html file in the browser like it should but the second file still has to download and launch a second browser. I'm not sure if this is some sort of user rights problem or setup of the webserver. I've removed the default website, restarted IIS, rebooted the machine, reentered everything. I am doing the same thing on another 2003 server and it works like it should. I'm at a loss as to what to do next...hopefully this is something that someone has fixed before.     - Thought I would share something I have been hounded by the higher ups to make data mining our IIS hits into something meaningful for them for months. I have tried to use some of the built in reports in Crystal Reports, but they needed a lot of customization and took for ever to run. I just got this program called 123LogAnalyzer from the .com site by the same name and it was wicked easy to use. I created a batch file that runs the program from the command line every night and it created web page reports for the past day, 7 days, week to date, month to date, last month, last 30, 90 and 180 days. I dump each of the web reports into its own folder and I have a web page on my site that links to the reports so all the managers have to do is fire up the web page and see all the reports. I am pretty good with learning a program and I know how to do a little web page editing. I got this thing and in two hours I made it so I never have to do another thing again. It is pretty cool. This isn't any kind of promo. I just thought I had to pass this on because I have been having a hard time finding something like this that was not made for a huge company. The Cog Wheel icon is normal, it's an application. The FP search
question would likely be better answered in a FrontPage group. You'll
need to tell them how you're searching (such as using Indexing
Services). Also, make sure you've followed:
