Hi,

I am having trouble getting IIS to respond on a new laptop, running XP Pro,
SP2. I am trying to get IIS to run on this machine for the first time.

When I type http://localhost in Internet Explorer's address field, IE's
status bar says "Opening page hppt://localhost/." but the page is blank
(white) and never shows anything. It just seems to hang.

I believe I have IIS installed properly: When I go to Control Panel | Add or
Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components, select IIS and click
Details, the following items are checked: Common Files, Documentation,
FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions, Internet Information Services Snap-In,
SMTP Service, and www Service (grey checkbox).

When I go to My Computer and right click on Manage, then expand Services and
Applications and double click on IIS, I get nothing in the right-hand pane
of the Computer Management screen. It just seems to hang.

I cannot tell any difference when I enable or disable Norton Internet
Security, nor can I tell a difference when I enable or disable Windows
Firewall.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
From what you are saying, it looks like IIS may not have installed
properly. Can you follow the steps below to see if you can enumerate the
IIS metabase?:
1) Open command prompt and switch to C:\inetpub\adminscripts
2) Run the command "cscript adsutil.vbs enumall >output.txt"
How big is output.txt?? If it is a few KB in size then that would indicate
a corrupt metabase.
In the services console, are you able to successfully stop/start the IIS
Admin service?? If you are getting errors, then thats another indication of
a corrupt metabase possibly due to improper installation.
The best way to fix this would be to reinstall IIS (be sure to have any
antivirus software stopped during this process).

Let me know how it goes,
