Hello,

As you will notice from my question I'm new to the configuration of IIS.
Could someone please point me in the right direction (book or web links)
that will give me a good step by step procedure and understanding of how to
configure my newly installed IIS v6 Server? What I need to know is how to
put in place a web page that has been built using Microsoft Publisher v2003
(.pub file), and how do I make it accessible to everyone in the company.

By the way, this IIS has been built for "internal use only" it will not be
open to the public, so I don't have to worry about locking it down so much.

Thanks in advance for your help with this matter.
William

it will give you answers to many other IIS 6.0 questions.

Hi,

You must do the publishing from within Publisher. The pub file is not a
HTML file, so if you configure IIS to allow this file extension, your
visitors will be prompted to download the file (and open it in Publisher).
This is obviously not what you want.

Instead you should follow the steps outlined in:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP030661591033.aspx

When you do this, the pub file will be converted to a filtered HTML file
by Publisher, which web browsers can read and show to the visitor like any
other website.

Make sure that Frontpage Server Extensions are installed or else some
features may not work. To install and enable Frontpage 2002 Server
Extensions, follow the steps provided in this article:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/WindowsServer2003/Library/IIS/2c522246-8450-408d-b907-197dfa0fdbb6.mspx?mfr=true

Good Luck!

The IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Guide will not tell the OP how to resolve the
question about how to publish a website designed in Publisher, which was
the question.

I don't understand your comment, Kristofer.

The question was :

>>Could someone please point me in the right direction (book or web links)
>>that will give me a good step by step procedure and understanding of how to configure my newly
>>installed IIS v6 Server?

Just because the OP mistakenly thinks that .pub files can be used to
"put in place a web page that has been built using Microsoft Publisher v2003",
doesn't mean that *.pub files can *actually* be published to IIS to make a site
"accessible to everyone in the company".

Can you publish ".pub" files in IIS ?
Or, does Publisher produce standard html files which can be published with IIS ?

Of course, you *cannot* use *.pub files to publish Publisher websites.
Publisher uses *html* files to publish the contents of *.pub files.

Therefore, reading the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Guide is good advice,
in order to avoid the usual pitfalls associated with publishing websites with IIS.

Here's a quick guide to publishing web sites using Publisher 2003 or Publisher 2000 :

http://www.ez2ba.com/html/help/guides/microsoft-publisher.html

Following those simple rules should cover it.

If the OP runs into problems publishing the html files Publisher produces,
the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Guide will be an invaluable resource for resoving
those problems, just like it is an invaluable resource for resolving most IIS
site-publishing problems.

You neglected to answer the more specific question, the question the OP
really needed an answer to. The answer to the question is not to be found
in the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit and it would have been a vaste of time for the
OP to read through ~900 pages and not find the answer. Hence my comment
that the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit will not answer the question about
publishing websites designed in Publisher.

** Quote **
"Can you publish ".pub" files in IIS ?
Or, does Publisher produce standard html files which can be published with
IIS ?

Of course, you cannot use *.pub files to publish Publisher websites.
Publisher uses html files to publish the contents of *.pub files."
** End Quote **

It may be obvious to you that Publisher uses html to publish the contents
of .pub files. But is it obvious for the OP? You made the very rough
assumption that the OP knew what to do with the pub file (convert it to
HTML in Publisher), and that the problem was in publishing the HTML for
everyone in the company to view. Since the OP explicity asked how to
publish a website from a pub file, it is rather obvious (to me) that the
OP did not know this information.

Furthermore, publishing a website for users on the Intranet to see, is
more or less to just start IIS. There is no need to read 900 pages. It may
be helpful, or interesting, but definitely not necessary. In fact, I would
find that the IIS help file (press F1 in IIS Manager) is far more useful
for the typical user of IIS, than the resource kit is. It has a "Getting
Started" section, and several step-by-step articles on how to do various
tasks.

So, does the link I sent in my reply, which you snipped, answer the OP's question ?

Here it is again :

http://www.ez2ba.com/html/help/guides/microsoft-publisher.html

In fact, has anything you've sent in answer the OP's question?
(Given that you are criticizing that I suggested he read the IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Guide)

I really don't understand why you don't want the OP to read the
IIS 6.0 Resource Kit Guide, if he has problems publishing html files with IIS 6.0.

One thing is clear, though, the link posted above *does* solve the OP's question.

I would like to thank you both for your help and replies to my request.
Both links you sent me were very helpful.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP030661591033.aspx and
http://www.ez2ba.com/html/help/guides/microsoft-publisher.html

They both pointed me to the same thing in resolving my problem, I was able
to publish the web page without any problem. And thank you for the link to
the IIS Resource Kit that will come in handy as well, for I did receive an
error pointing to one of the pages within the file as it was being convert
over to .html, so between the Resource Kit and the built-in Help features of
IIS I should be able to resolve that issue as well.

Once again, thank you both for your time and effort, you both were very
helpful.

Thanks
William
