Best IIS log practices on webfarm
Hi,
can anybody help me with web logging on webfarm?
I'm using 2 IIS servers (based on WS2K3) with NLB as a
webfarm. Is possible to log all activities on both
servers to one data storage for web analysis? I set ODBC
logging, but after few short tests with Application
Center Test has the SQL database hundreds of megabytes.
From 100 to 200 users uses our website at one time, so if
I run ODBC logging during a month, I predict log database
will have few gigabytes...
So is any another good idea how to log activities?
Thank you.

HELP! Limiting max connection
Hi all!
I am a newbie in web server administration.
I developed a three tier application (isapi dll, app server, database
Oracle)
When there are 80 users simultaneously connected the app slows
very badly...
In this case we often need to reboot the database server.
Is it possible to set a kind of maximum number of users for IIS?
Once reached the limit IIS should give a "retry later" message...
Does this approach make sense?
Thanks very much for any help or tip or suggestion

ISAPI filter problem
Hi everyone,
I am trying to create ISAPI filter that will intercept incoming header from
the client and modify it.
When I create ISAPI filter using VC++ wizard
(wizard with options: use MFC, create filter only, no server extension
objects, notification priority low, filter connection type secured and non
secured and notification for incoming raw data and headers... and nothing
else)
I build the DLL without any modifications to the code, add it the website,
restart server, but the filter is still down (red arrow pointing down)
This is only the case when I use notification for incoming raw data (
SF_NOTIFY_READ_RAW_DATA) ... if I use SF_NOTIFY_URL_MAP filter is up and
running.
I know that sometimes filters stay down until they are first used so I
checked the IIS log (with IISDebug tools) and it says that there was an
Win32Error="87"
I tried on two IIS.
So what is the problem? configuration? bad wizard or what?

IIS serving blank *.aspx pages??
Please help! I have been using VS.Net for sometime now,
and have recently had to have my PC hardrive reimaged. I
have installed the components to allow me to continue work
on my web app (Windows 2000-SP3, VS.Net Framework
v1.0.3705, IIS v5.0). I have followed the steps to repair
IIS mapping (KNowelegde base: 306005) just in case.
VS works fine, my web app was successfully retrieved from
MS SourceSafe and builds successfully on the local
machine. I can start the app in debug mode and actually
debug through the code fine. However, following code
execution, something crazy seems to be happening when the
page is being sent to the browser (IE6) resulting in a
blank page displayed in IE. Sometimes, some HTTP header
crap is displayed (e.g. "Content-Type: text/html;
charset=utf-8 Content-Length: 5081 ").
That is the problem - I cannot run my app locally. Infact,
I have tried browsing my localhost from other PCs and have
the same problem leading me to think this is solely an IIS
issue. Steps I have tried to cure this problem:
* Obviously, restarted IIS x number of times.
* Repaired IIS mapping.
* Monitored the aspnet.exe process during compilation of
the aspx page to be displayed in the browser and it seems
to behave as normal (i.e. builds a cache, increases memory
whilst building). Still the page is blank.
* Ensured the aspx mapping for my web app is pointing to
the right framework (well there is only 1) but also that
it was mapped correctly which it is.
* My IE connection settings are all correct (i.e. proxy,
exceptions, etc.)
* IIS Admin tool runs correctly. I can see my apps in the
directory structure. I can browse localhost .html or .asp
files fine from IE but it cannot render localhost .aspx
pages at all!
Any help would be much appreciated, as completely starting
from scratch will be the only available option very
shortly.
Thanks in advance. Daniel. Tag: Make IIS respond to IP on multi-homed server Tag: 302396

XP and IIs 5.1
Further to my earlier post, here is some more info:
IIS installed on XP Professional - just used the add/remove programs
method and all seemed fine.
Then I attempted to get to http://localhost and the following happened:
1) a cookie got set
2) I was prompted for a username & password (I entered my XP ones)
3) page displayed
error '8002801c'
Error accessing the OLE registry.
/iisHelp/common/500-100.asp, line 17
4) in the address line of the browser, display has changed to
http://localhost/localstart.asp
the doc tree looks like this:
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\
I seem to have two files called localstart.asp -one in the above
directory and one in the subdirectory _vti_cnf - the content of these
files when examined using a text editor is vastly different.
I created a new virtual directory called fred mapped to a physical
directory c:\inetpub\wwwroot\fred in which I placed a file index.htm
(containing just a 'hello' line plus obligatory <html> and </html>.
http://localhost/fred/index.htm then retrives this file just great. I
renamed the file to index.asp and visited
http://localhost/fred/index.asp and again the file displayed quite fine.
With this evidence, can anyone sugest where I might look next?

ASP Pages not serving
Hi,
I have got a problem with ASP pages not serving on IIS6. I am not sure what
I have done, but when I try to load an ASP page I get a 404 Not Found Error.
The error itself seem to be a proper 404 not found. I have changed the
custom error pages so that the 404.1 .2 & .3 pages are used, but it still
just displays the standard one. I have checked the mapping and they seem OK
(pointing to asp.dll) and the web service extension is OK. I have tried
numerous combinations of things, but I still cannot get the pages to load.
Any help would really be appreciated as my head is kno starting to hurt (not
true actually, it started hurting about two days ago!).

Virtual Directories in XP Pro With Subst Drives
. Reply (E-mail) Forward (E-mail)
Subject: IIS Subst Drives Virtual Directories
From: "Jim C" <clearstead@hotmail.com> Sent: 9/10/2003

Our company recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to Win XP
Pro. We our a software development company. ON Win 2000
we had our different softare releases on physical drives
like the following:
d:\release1
d:\release2
d:\release3
And whatever release we are currently working on /
debugging we would do the following:
subst x: d:\release1
And then register all of our com objects from x:\ and map
our IIS virtual directories to x:
This worked great in 2000. Now that we are in XP this
process seems to break.
We cannot map virtual directories to the x: subst drive.
I can understand that, it is unfortunate, but to get
around we started creating the vitual directory to
d:\release1. But the com objects are still registered x:
So in this configuration any web pages in d:\release1 fail
because they are registered in x:.
Have others seen this? Is there a workaround? I have
tried to run IIS as my user thinking that the subst drives
are only visible to my user, but that also fails (can
bring up any hosted pages).
Thanks,
Jim

IIS5 hangs on returning .asp
Hi, Recently, IIS5 has stopped retuning files of

Everything works fine when an .htm is requested. I have

The pages still hang. So I think it must be something
outside the IIS environment on the machine.

SSL - Page cannot be displayed
Hi...I've got a website that I need to secure. I've
applied my certificate, and when I try to access the
site, I get a page cannot be displayed error.
The site is not using any host headers, and has its own
IP address.
I think I've downloaded every KB article that Microsoft
has, and nothing. I'm about ready to pull my hair out.
One thing that strikes me as odd, is that when I run a
netstat -an on my web server, I see a local address entry
for 0.0.0.0:443, but not one for my website, which is
10.0.0.5:443. That's telling me that my website is not
listening on port443 (BTW I do see an entry for
10.0.0.5:80, and the site works fine over standard
HTTP). I've run through the KB article that tells me to
add and remove a certificate from the default website,
and this doesn't seem to have changed anything.
I'm desperate. I need to get this secure site up and
running. I've opened a case with Microsoft, they've been
sitting on it for over a week. Does anyone have any
ideas?
If you could email me at adenhollander@gardengraphics.com
I'd be much obliged.
Thanks.

Using UPN logon for usernames which exceed 20 characters
Hi,
We're looking for a way to allow the UPN login to be used
in order to login to MS FTP without having to specify the
domain.
We've followed the following article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;313820
Which works fine with usernames =< 20 characters, but
with usernames > 20 characters the UPN login doesn't
work...
For example, take the following user:
Username: 1234567890123456789012345678901234567890
Post-2k Username: 12345678901234567890
Using the username:
1234567890123456789012345678901234567890
Doesn't work, the username:
12345678901234567890
Works fine, and the username:
1234567890123456789012345678901234567890@domain
Works fine...
I seems to only require the "@domain" if the username
exceeds 20 characters...
Is anyone aware of a way to make larger logins work on MS
FTP without specifying the domain?
Thanks

IIS 5 (anonymous user) access to Novell Netware (5.1) fileserver?
Hi,
Have one problem:
In IIS 5 and one virtual directory there that I have created there
I have choosen to use a local user on the Win 2000 Server.
This Win 2000 server is logged on Novell Netware (Novell
Client 4.83 is in use).
This user that we use in Windows 2000 Server account is also in Novell
Netware (5.1) with same password as in Windows 2000 server.
All permissions on the folder in Novell Netware file server is
OK (the Novell Administrator has done that part) but the IIS
user can not "see" the files on the Novell file server.
There is no problem to access the Novell file server folder via File
manager (Explorer) from Win 2000 server.
The problem is IIS -> Novell file server.
I'm not quite sure how the local user that IIS use in the Win 200
Server can be granted access to the Novell file server since
the log on to Novell Netware is a separate thing.
Win 2000 Server:
local user ->IIS-> Novell file server
This does not work...
There is abosolutely no problem when Novell is not involved, for
example in an NT domain or AD and access to a folder on a file server
ther -that is tested.
Does it matter what user we are logged in locally on the Win 2000
server? (we are no logged in as the user we use in IIS and this user
is member ofl ocal Administrators group on the Win 2000 server).

Access to winnt\system32 outside of my document-root
Hi!
I'm a totally IIS Newbie: I have a Python-CGI Script installed, which
needs to execute a "diff" command. This is done by the Python-Call
popen(...). Unforunatly Python uses internally always the string
"C:\\WINNT\\system32\\cmd.exe /c diff -u <file_1> <file_2>". If I
execute the python-Script from command-line, everything works fine.
Diff is installed.
My Problem now is, that i always get the error: "access denied (5)" as
the return of my python script. Can it be, that the IIS is not allowed
to execute programs outside of the webroot in its default
configuration? If yes, how can I configure the IIS in order to have
access to winnt\system32? IF no, why can't i execute cmd.exe?
IIS-Version: 5.0

accessing data
Hi all,
Please bear with me as this may seem like an obvious
question. Essentially we are looking to produce a small
web site, that will allow users to post data to a
database and recieve data from a database. Whilst I have
been able to do this as an intranet. I am concerned and
this is where my knowledge fails me, as to how this would
work if it was published on the web server that sits
outside of our firewall (our public server).
Essentially, what I am looking for is information (idiots
guide on how this works) essentially as far as I can see
we need the clients to log on to the site from the
internet and interract with a database that sits behind
our firewall.
Hope this doesnt sound to confusing, but i guess im a
little confused myself.
Appreciate any help with this matter.

Problems with FTP server.
Hi,
For reasons I have been unable to determine, sometimes people are unable to
log onto my virtual FTP server with a GUI FTP client. But at the same time
they can via command line clients? This is reproducible on the server and
since this strange behavior happens to many people I think it is a WIN2k
server thing?
Any ideas ?
Thanks,

IIS log interpretation
Hello!
I have had problems for a long time with IIS hanging now and then.
Have tried with rebooting the server every morning, installed IIS
recycle tool, and a lot of other stuff but nothing seems to do the
trick.
Finally, I installed IISState and captured a dump file the last time
it hung up... and now I put my last hope to you guys in this group
that you can help me interpret the log file. I would appreciate any
help!!!!
Regards,
Pär Andreasson
