We're running IIS 5.0 on Windows 2000 Server. This is a
pretty new machine - over 2GB of memory, and a 3.06 GHz
Xeon processor.

We're running into a very strange problem with IIS and IP
addresses. Currently we have 24 extra IP addresses
assigned to our NIC and everything works fine. If we
assign a 25th address to the NIC, when we then go to open
IIS we get the following error:
"Error connecting to [our machine name].
Not enough resources are available to complete this
operation. Do you wish to continue to attempt to connect
to it in the future?" When I click "Yes" IIS opens, but
it doesn't display any of our web sites - there's a line
at the top saying "Internet Information Services" with
nothing, not even our default web site, below it.

If we delete the 25th IP address from the NIC card, we can
open IIS with no problems or errors.

I've hunted and hunted for any information about limits on
how many IP's can be assigned to a NIC and on this error
message and can't find anything. We host web sites and
really need to be able to access IIS when we have more
than 24 IP addresses assigned to the NIC.

After I add the 25th IP address to the NIC the websites
associated with the IP addresses all still work, and I can
even ping that 25th address and get a response - I just
can't get into IIS to set up the associated web site.

Thanks in advance for any information anyone can give me
on how to resolve this issue!

There is no limit. You may have some sort of other mis-configuration on the=
server. Usually you will receive that message if iis services are not=
running when you open the mmc.

John -
Thanks for your response. This is a production web server
so the IIS Admin service is always running, as well as the
WWW Publishing service and FTP Publishing service. Any
ideas on what we can check to look for a mis-configuration?

Thanks for any help you can give!

First of all, make sure you have all the service packs and patches
installed.

I would like to see result of "ipconfig /all" before and after adding
the 25th ip address. Moreover, I would recommend to post the same
question in micosoft.public.*.Networking groups.

PS. We did catch almost the same problem in Win2003 Web Edition in COM+
Server, and after openinf a case with Microsoft and it was recognized as
a bug and we received a patch, so... it may be the issue in your case as
well....

Well, we seem to have resolved (not solved) the problem.
Andrey advised checking if we had the same kind of
problems adding IP addresses to our second NIC card. In
the process of checking this out we discovered that 25
appears to be the magic (unlucky) number.

If we add a 25th address to NIC #1 or to NIC#2 we have the
problem. However, the problem disappears if we add a 26th
address to either card. So it appears that the problem
only occurs with exactly 25 extra IP addresses on our 1st
NIC card and no extra addresses on the 2nd. Our
resolution is to assign an extra, non-used IP address on
our NIC card in order to put the total over 25.

This seems like a bug but at least we've found a work-
around. Thanks Andrey for your help!
