    - Protecting Access Databases Greetings, I am at a loss on what seeting I need in IIS to secure an Access Database so it can not be downloaded by any user but still be accessed by all users. By accessed I mean through the web application. I just want to prevent people from entering the url path to the database into a browser and getting the Download dialog which would allow them to save the DB on their disks.     - Response.Flush: Differences between IIS 6.0 and 5.0? It has always been my expectation and observation that Response.Flush is a synchronous operation. In other words, I do not expect my ASP script to continue running until the entire response buffer has been sent to the client. It appears that this is no longer the case under IIS 6.0. I have included them just to prove that there's no transfer encoding or compression going on that would explain the different results from the two servers. The interesting result is that Flush took almost no time to execute on IIS 6.0 and it took nearly 6 seconds on IIS 5.0. The 6 second result is expected if Flush is a synchronous operation since that's about how long it took to receive the page in my browser from both of the servers. The only explanation for the 0 second result on the 6.0 server is that Response.Flush is behaving asynchronously on that server. While I'm sure that asynchronous flushes would be desirable for many applications, it is highly undesirable for mine. I won't make this post any longer explaining why (unless someone really wants to know), just trust that I have a good reason.     - First request to ASP.NET application completely hangs Windows 2003 Server Hello, I have very strange problem - first request to ANY ASP.NET application hangs completely W2003 Server. The server freeezes in unusual way - I cannot start ANY new process (or stop), processor utilization is very low (~2-3 %). Thi happens only during request to ASP.NET application. STatic HTML and .ASP applications work fine. Complete reinstallation of IIS did not help. After installing .NET 2.0 Beta - result is the same. It seems to be problem in .NET, not IIS, but it only manifests in ASP.NET application. I receive ths behavior on 2 systems - one is development server and it happened after 4 months of hard work, but the same effect is on production server with PURE installation and another set of ASP. NET application (just one simple app.) The problem started ~4 weeks ago after one of critical updates install. It seems quite serious, I have no idea, especially that the problem seems to go deep into internals, in fact there is no possibility to start any process, so it looks like deadlock at the kernel level.     - Constantly uploading Pleas help me!!!! I know almost nothing about uploading and downloading from the net. My problem is I am constantly uploading (bytes sent/received) when i am connected to the net, to the point where i struggle to even access my usual pages. The execute permissions can be found under the 'Home Directory' tab where you can select 'Scipts only' as this is sufficient for the introduction page in IIS.     - Using Virtual Directories across web sites. I have a need to use/share the contents of a single directory ("virtualdirectory") on 2 separate web sites: http://myweb1.mydomain1.com/virtualdirectory and http://myweb2.mydomain1.com/virtualdirectory Both sites are being hosted on the same Windows Server 2003 with FrontPage Extensions and have seperate Home directories. I've found that only myweb1 can see the virtual directory from FrontPage. I believe this is because only site can control the FP Extensions. Does anyone know the best way to accoomplish this? Thanks.     - IIS 5, Front page & Publishing problems Normally I don't publish to my website as I just change the files as needed. Now I want to publish from my pc to my server, on the same subnet, using FP XP. Every time I try to publish changes to my website I get the popup box message: The folder, \\server\domain is contained by a server-based Web. To access this web you must use the http:// url for the web server. I have tried that and get this message box: Unable to open "http://www.mydomain.org" Server error: Could not find a web server at 'www.mydomain.org' .....etc. I do have a web presence on the net and have checked the FP Extensions with a strange message on that. When checking the Extensions I first get a box that says: The server administration program and the server extensions on the web server are not compatible. The administration program is too old to use with this server. I am running a W2k Advanced server SP4 with IIS 5.0 and FP XP extensions.     - Can't access RWW on sbs20032 from internet. Hi, I am having major trouble accessing RWW or any page from my server from the internet. I have gone through the setting a million times and can't find anything that pops out. I have a feeling it could be a dns issue or something like that. I can access rww from internal and everything works great but not from the outside...I have even put the server in the DMZ to rule out any bad firewall rules.     - Locating Files On My server I want to find files on my server in the office so i can access them on my home pc.     - ASP with SBS-2003: slower with each page-call Hello! My ASP-project works fine on a XP-System. Now I transfered the project to a SBS-2003 and the access is slower and slower with each call of a page, until a page needs up to 2 Minutes to open, when it access the mdb (Driver: Microsoft Access Driver .mdb, ADODB.Connection). In this situation the Servers bores itself (works with 3 percent). The problem is only when accessing the mdb - the ASP-pages without mdb are called fast. When I restart the IIS, all is OK - for 1 to 2 hours. I have checked, that the mdb-object is closed on every page and set to nothing. The Anti-Virus software can't be the problem (its the same without AV). In the log-files I found no errors. Summary: ASP/IIS + XP = OK. ASP/IIS + Server = slower and slower. Is there any big difference between IIS on XP and IIS on SBS-2003, or any lock-situation when I work with mdb? Has anyone a reference, where I can search for a solution of this problem?     - Webserver / IIS configuration Hi! I'm working with setting up my own webserver (first time), but got a problem: The webpage is not found / cannot be displayed. I have installed Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition, and IIS 6. I think the problem has to to with the IIS configuration. I want to run multiple sites on my IIS Server. Here is how I have configured IIS: 1. First I right-clicked on "web sites" and choosed "new" 2. I wrote a description, and in IP address I kept the default value "All unassigned". TCP port = 80 and Host Header = my domain name (ex: mysite.com) 3. Then I browsed to the folder where my website is stored. "Allow anonymous access......" is choosed. Then Finish. The DNS info is updated and points to my webservers IP address. I thougt this would be it, and the webserver should work. But I only get the message "The page cannot be displayed" when I type the URL in my browser. Have I forgot something, or have I done something terrible wrong?? Please help me!!!     - Installed Internet Information Services 5.1 on XP Pro but no Admin? I can run the .asp files stored in inetpub/wwwroot in my browser using localhost/somefile.asp, so my IIS is installed and responding, but I have no administration interface???     - Problem With FreeAspUpload Can anyone help please? If this is not the right place to log my question can someone advise where to send it. I am trying to use FreeAspUpload script (http://www.freeaspupload.net) and cannot get it to run correctly. Can anyone help. I have changed the required variable in the test script but when I run it, after I have selected a file to upload from the web page, the File Download box appears and it is forcing me to download the asp page that I am running to somewhere I select. SO instead of uploading a file I select to a preset location it is trying to download a file I haven't selected to a location I can choose.     - security problem when accessing restricted page Hi, i have a IIS 6 on Windows 2003. On one of the websites i host, they have one ASP they use for entering data. They wanted to secure that one page. So i made a user with a password, then in the Windows Explorer on the security settings of that ASP i removed the IIS_USER and added the newly created user with read and execute access. So far so good, it worked for months. Now, from one day on another they can't login anymore. Strange enough, their "master" account, i.e. the account they use for ftp-upload of the complete site, is still allowed access. So i thought it was something with that user. I first removed his rights on that page and put them back, but that didn't help. I then completely deleted that user and re-created it, but that didn't help either. Then i created a completely new user, with a completely different name, and gave him the rights on that page. No access. Then i made a testpage on my own website, gave those two new users permission on it and removed the anonymous user, but i could't get access. Then i thought: let's try that "master" account on my testpage, and when i added it to the security settings for the page, and tried to open the page, it wouldn't work either. So i'm kind of stuck with the fact that the pages that are already secured still remain, but that i can't add new users to them. The only thing that changed a.f.a.i. know are the updates that i installed through Windows Update. Could there be a problem with that? i.e. that one of the updates changed a setting? Any ideas?     - Error Sending mail using IIS6 SMTP Hi gurus, I am having an IIS6 server using it's SMTP virtual server to send mail. There are two mail items that cannot be sent and the error logged is: "The transport lost its connection to the server." The connection timeout is set to 10minutes in SMTP server.     - IIS 5.0 access denied I can no longer connect to IIS on my laptop running Windows 2000 Pro. When opening control panel->administrative tools->IIS management, I get the following error message (translated from norwegian version, so english phrase might not be exact): "There was an error connecting to <hostname>: access denied. Would you like to connect later?" I'm logged on the computer with administrator privileges, and have full access to all files and applications. IIS and localhost was working fine a few days ago, but in the meantime I have installed and uninstalled a VPN-client, and installed a JAVA development tool (Eclipse).     - IIS 6: Problem with ASP pages Hi I'm running 10 websites on Server 2003/IIS 6. Half of them are html, other half asp. Everythings seems fine at first, but at some point I can't get the server to display asp pages. And I don't get any error messages, not in the browser, and not in the event viewer. The browser just "freezes". (Opening page...) HTML pages works. And I have to restart IIS to fix the problem. This happens once a day. The only errors in the event viewer comes AFTER i restart IIS: - "The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 5 time(s)." - "The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 6 time(s)." - "The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s)." - "The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) service terminated unexpectedly.     - IIS 6.0 and POP3 I received a worm through on my mail server. My antivirus program was unable to remove it, so out of panic I deleted the Domain on the POP3 MMC, as well as the folder with the same domain name in the mailroot folder. The good news is I believe the virus has been successfully removed. My problem is, is that I cannot re-enter the domain back into the POP3 MMC.     - Can't Create New Web Site in Visual Studio or FrontPage Due to some strange problem with Internet Information Services, or the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, or some vestigial junk from SharePoint, I am unable to create a web application in Visual Studio .NET 2003, and unable to create a new web site in FrontPage 2003. I have uninstalled and reinstalled every possibly relevant bit of software I can think of (short of Windows XP Professional), including Visual Studio, FrontPage, Internet Information Services, the FrontPage Server Extensions (plain and 2002), and the SharePoint Portal 2001 Server Client software (currently uninstalled). I have uninstalled, repaired, and reinstalled several of these components more than once. Nothing is solving the problem, including a several days discussion with an MVP on the Microsoft.Public.FrontPage.Extensions.WindowsNT newsgroup. So I'd be very appreciative if any of you can suggest something else I might try. Symptoms are these: 1. In Visual Studio, upon the attempt to create a new web application project, the system simply hangs while displaying the Create New Web progress dialog: Creating the web 'http://localhost/WebApplication1' 2. In FrontPage 2003, upon the attempt to create a new one page website, I get the following error message: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- An error occurred accessing your Windows SharePoint Services site files. Authors - if authoring against a Web server, please contact the Webmaster for this server's Web site. WebMasters - please see the server's application event log for more details. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- Regrettably, the application event log sheds no light, showing no entries resulting from the attempt to create a site. If I then launch the IIS management console, a red stop sign marked "Error" shows up next to the Default Web Site, but I do not know how to get information about what specific error causes that icon to display. If I run "Check Server Extensions", the response is "No problems found." If I run "Check Server Extensions 2002", Internet Explorer attempts to display the page http://dim4300/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll?page=health.htm but that just hangs with the green progress bar at the bottom of the screen chugging away and getting nowhere. During some phases of my efforts to fix this problem, the progress bar has run to completion, presenting simply a blank page in IE. Uninstalling and reinstalling the FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 and/or IIS does not solve the problem. As I say, I would really appreciate some assistance with this problem.     - Problem with WWW Publishing Service Hello, I had my IIS running fine on my machine (XP Pro). Sometime yesterday, I went in to my IIS Manager (MMC, I guess), and I highlighted my computer name and a message box comes up saying "You have been denied access to this machine". Then, a red 'X' is displayed on the icon of my machine name in the list. Now, I went to my services applet and realized that the World Wide Web Publishing Service is no longer listed. I uninstalled and re-installed IIS to no avail, and I went ahead and did a repair using my XP CD-ROM, thinking perhaps I had a corrupt file of some kind. Even after re-installation, etc, the WWW Publishing Service is never listed in the services applet again. What happenend? I've read all about isolating users, but it appears that we're being locked into a folder structure of "ftproot\LocalUser\username", which doesn't help. I've tried using the IIS5 method of virtual directories, but I get a "User ClientLogin1 cannot log in, home directory inaccessible." Permissions are set properly on the target folder, identical in every substantive way to our Win2K server. What's the answer here? Am I stuck with the folder structure Microsoft dictates?     - WEBDAV I have a problem. I have setup a webdav directory on a webserver that i look after. I have definately setup all the permissions correctly in IIS manager and NTFS. When i load up the webpage from inside or out of the firewall i can log in and download files but i cannot write or save documents from within documents (word etc)a save as dialog comes up to save locally.     - Integrated Auth Prompt 4 Password Once local users have logged onto the Windows 2000 domain, I would like for them to access my IIS website that is secured with NTLM/Integrated Windows Authentication. When a user accesses http://webserver they are taken straigh to the start page. When a user accesses http://webserver.domain.com they are prompted for their credentials. When a user accesses http://192.168.1.1 they are prompted for their credentials. All of the above resolve to the same Server. The server has no header defined in IIS. The client and server are on the same subnet and do not use proxy/gateway/firewall or anything else. It is a 2000 Domain (mixed mode) with both DNS and WINS servers. Could WINS name resolution somehow allow the credentials to be carried over to the server while DNS name resolution does not? The only difference that I can see is that http://webserver may use WINS while http://webserver.domain.com would use DNS and http://192.168.1.1 would access the machine directly. Users have been complaining (which they are very good at doing) about the number of times they have to log in to get to their Web Based Email. I need for them to always use http://webserver.domain.com as they are not very literate - so asking them to alter the URL is not a favourable option. My long terms goal is to avoid all login prompts unless absolutely necessary (some users will access the site from outside the company). Also, certain users will be accessing via an ISA proxy so I wanted to implement Digest Authentication - but I would like to get http://webserver.scd.ie with NTLM working first. Not sure if I'm in the right spot, but I have a problem that needs fixing.
Everytime I get onto my internet explorer I get a message stating that
microsoft Internet exploroer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Sorry for the inconvienence. I wrote down the Error signature if that may
help anyone to help me. it is as follows: app name: iexplorer , app version
6.0 , mod name wsem300.dll , mod version 1.0 offset 0000ab0. I get this
everytime I get onto iexplorer. It always gives me the option to send a
report and restart iexplorer, but I found that if I just lower the error
window down below the screen I can still use iexplorer without any problems.
I have D/L netscape navigator and never have this problem. If anyone could
please help me I would much appreciate it. My email is
