    - Restart IIS7 + ApplicationPool+Website If you make changes to your IIS config, you must restart IIS, which is best done through WMI, it's faster than launching the IIS Snap-in. Plus, it is possible to check through WMI whether the AppPool and the website are already running, if not, WMI can launch them automatically too. Sometimes they are not started automatically when the W3SVC service is started, I don't know why.     - IIS 3.0 Permissions Issue and possible IIS metabase corruption. Hi All, Ok, first off, I apologize for posting a question for a non-supported s/w piece on Windows NT 4.0. We have an FTP server running IIS 3.0 on Windows NT 4.0 which is giving us a little heartburn, weve the permissions setup to allow certain users RWXD (Change Access) in NT 4.0 and this account is applied RXWD (Change) access throughout the entire directory tree with inheritence enabled. Whenever we log onto this server thorugh an FTP session we are able to logon with the account that has the correct access even at the operator level, but, when we attempt to access one of the subfolders with the access applied as RWXD (Change) access to the subdirectory we get "Access Denied".     - web gardens and memory Looking for some guidance on web gardens. I see iis lets me set the worker processes to what ever I want. It if set it too high it actually hurts me because I overwhelms the memory and cpu. Is there a general guideline about how much memory should be available after all the worker processes are runningâ?¦or is using up all the physical memory except for 50 megs or so a good way to run and utilize memory resources?     - After Migration problems! I did my Migration, everything seem to copy over, except in IIS, I have 2 Default Web Sites. Under the First Default Web Site I have nothing, under the second I have everything that was copied over. If I start the second one I get nothing when I try to go to the website, if I stop the second and start the first one and copy a virtual directory from the second that don't work to the first one...it seems to work.     - .NET Framework 3.0 doesn't show up in IIS Manager I am building some new servers and have installed .NET Framework 2.0. and 3.0 and have run the aspnet_regiis (for 1.1 and 2.0) and the ServiceModelReg.exe (for 3.0) with several different switches and cannot get the 3.0 framework to list when I go to the properties of an IIS site/application and click on the .NET tab.     - Many Web Sites with the same port I've created in my IIS 6.0 Windows 2003 Servver a new web site (Test Site), this Site is also listening at port 80 but the host header is an especific domain (www.test.com), the problem is that when there is a request from the domain I see the IISSTART.htm page that is contained in the Default Site not the IISSTART contained in Test Site thaks for your help!!!     - Authentication issues I have a Windows 2003 IIS server. We recent had a need to tighten the security on a folder that IIS uses. I removed the Anonymous account from accessing the folder and in the IIS Folder security unchecked Anonymous Access. I left Integrated Windows Authentication checked. On our test server (single server) the Secured webpage prompts me for a user ID and password. Once entered it takes me to the page. On our production server (2 Windows 2003 servers NWLB), the page doesnt display. Settings are identical on both servers. I read that Windows Authentication will not work with proxy and think that the WLBS might be considered a proxy. Any suggestions on how I can get the page to display in the Production network without using Anonymous Access?     - Can't find DLLs required for IISState Hi, I'm having trouble finding the files required for IISState. When I run the program I get the following message: NOTE: -------------------------------------------------------------------- IISState requires dll's found in the Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows that are available at www.microsoft.com/ddk/debugging/. Once you have installed the Debugging Tools, copy the following files into this directory: - dbgeng.dll - dbghelp.dll - ext.dll - ntsdexts.dll - symsrv.dll - uext.dll - userexts.dll However, I can't find these DLLs anywhere. I've downloaded all the versions for 32-bit debugging tools in: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx and none of them contain the DLLs I'm looking for.     - What can be preventing this email from being sent? (lines exceeding 998 chars) Hi all, I am having a strange problem with emails being sent from my production IIS server where when the content body of the email gets to such a volume I get the following message... Action: failed Status: 5.5.0 Diagnostic-Code: smtp;552 Requested mail action aborted: exceeded storage allocation 421 SMTP service not available, closing transmission channel ... I am stumped as to exactly where I can eradicate this problem. I know I receive emails with large attachments, so that isn't the problem. I was wondering whether their was a limit on the body of the email being sent. The 'Limit Message Size To' in IIS'S Default Virtual SMTP Server Properties is unchecked, meaning no limit. The email is obviously isn't leaving the server, because it a value is being added to the following location on the server (C:\Inetpub\mailroot\Badmail), so from this I take it that the it is nothing to do with the reciepients emails address. No I did find some info. It states in an article that the Content- Transfer-Encoding with values of 7 bit and 8 bit are not allowed body content that has lines that exceed 998 characters. What I find strange is how my gmail account can receive these emails, yet work emails/domains are not accepting them. Any pointers anyone? I'm kind of lost on what one element is referred to in applicationHost.config.     - Service Pack 2 and an empty global.asa breaks web application Hello, Today I had a phonecall from a client. 2 Sites of his were not working anymore and produced only 500 server errors when requesting classic ASP files. Other sites on that machine working perfectly. After some research we found out what was causing this. The client had an empty global.asa file in his sites. Which had been there for years. But after installing service pack 2 every ASP request failed. Apparently something was changed in asp.dll that causes this behavior. After removing the empty global.asa the site worked again like it did before. Have tested this behavior on 3 different machines with the same results. I agree that there is no use for an empty global.asa file. But it is a new bug introduced in the asp.dll by SP 2. Anyway the workaround/solution is easy.     - Application pool recycle is terminating connections I am administering a Wink2k3 IIS 6.0 server that hosts an application called Red Dot. Recently, the application pool recycle has been killing all active user connections.     - Installing multiple top web servers in IIS on Win server 2003 Hi, I'm a software developer, and I used / managed IIS only minimal, when needed, so I don't know lot of things about it I just installed for development and testing purpose an Win2003 server, and I want to be able to create multiple top level web sites on it I have a dyndns domain (like mydev.dyndns.org). I activated Enable wildcard on dyndns domain page, and now I'm able to to access my server with www.mydev.dyndns.org I saw how can I create multiple web sites, but now I know only how to do this on different ports.     - IIS Username/Password Dialogue Hey there, I am needing some help with a project I'm trying to finish up. I have made a directory password protected in IIS Control Panel and added the Windows Authentication to it. Every time I browse the to the folder, IIS returns the Username/Password Dialogue like this: Enter Username and Password for ""(Authentication) Username: Password: Now my question is how do I fill in the "" with a custom string. In apache you use .htaccess and the Authname variable to fill in the "" but I know this is not possible for IIS.     - How is IIS Updated? We have a web application, for which we are planning to require IIS 6. My question is if we have users who have 5, how can they upgrade to 6. I thought I read somewhere that there are no longer separate downloads after 4.0 as IIS is now part of Operating System distributions. If that is the case, is there any way to determine what versions of IIS shipped with what Operating Systems? Maybe we need to make a certain Operating System the requirement instead.     - IIS6 AND template caching Hi, i have some trouble with an IIS6 and a project developed in ASP classic. For some mistiques reason the process w3wp.exe take 700MB in memory after only 5 hours... I suppose that this beaviour is a conseguence of the system of caching of IIS template. In fact if i change an ASP script file included in every page...automatically w3wp.exe fall down to 30MB. In IIS5 in a Win2k machine this problem not exist. Why? I can configure IIS6 to refresh memory? (not reload Application Pool...it will delete every session and lost the client work).     - ASP.NET 2 - System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission I'm trying to get an ASP.NET 2 app to run from my IIS6 with files placed on another server. If i run the app with files placed on the IIS6 server it works just fine. But there is no space left so i have to place the files on another server. When i do so i get an error when trying to run the app, se end off message. I have tried to change the permissions for the app with the .Net 2 configuration and also by using "CasPol.exe -m -ag 1.2 -url file://fileserver/share$/folder/bill.smith/public_html/* FullTrust" also with no luck. When is this permission change going in action? right away or after 10 min or after a server restart? Should i place this permission in another code group than LocalIntranet_Zone? I run the application pool with a custom account for diffrent reasons, i use this account also for anonymous connections.     - Need Help--Configuring jakartha JK connectors with IIS Hi, I'm hosting a struts application using apache tomcat servers. We are using IIS to host the Jakarta JK connectors which in turn acts as load balancer for two tomcat application instances. The setup is running successfully in one environment(win 2000 Box) and we are trying to migrate the application into a new win 2003 Box. We are using same configuration files in the new box also and able to access application using their URL:port but not able to access the IIS service(load balancer).     - Session Restarts Hi all, I'm pretty new to this so please forgive my ignorance... I have an application running on IIS and I'm running into a problem with session restarts - namely, when the site is accessed from an address on an Intranet page the "A session has expired" page is displayed, and you have to click 'Restart' to log-in. For all situations where this page would normally be displayed, I would like to simply redirect the user to the login page of the application.     - Failed to execute request because the App-Domain could not be crea I have a Windows Server 2003, SP1 machine on which I'm hosting web applications (web pages and web services). These apps have been working fine for more than a year. As far as I know, no one in the company made any changes to this machine. We do NOT have Windows Update enabled, but 10 days ago I did download all the updates (except for SP2), installed and everything was fine .... until .... two days ago one of the web apps crashed bad. We got this: Failed to execute request because the App-Domain could not be created. Error: 0x80070005 Access is denied. After net-searching for the error, I found that I needed to give the IIS_WPG group read access to the web directories. I did this, restarted the web apps and all is good now. Here's the question: if the web apps were working just fine 3 days ago (and for a year before that), and no one made any changes to that machine, why would this problem suddenly arise two days ago?     - Cannot display properties for IIS4 Active Log Format NT4 SP6 IS4... when configuring web sites I can select Enable Logging, and the Active Log Format drop down selector and the Properties button activate. So far so good. I can select one of the available Active log formats However when I try and click the Properties button nothing happens. The button "clicks" but I get no response. A log file is however created. My problem is I want to set specific properties for the log file and cannot. I suspect a hack from way back.     - get back to default IIS 7.0 I've been messing around in IIS7.0 on Longhorn 6001 and to make a long story short I need to get back to the default state (when it was first installed or something close to that). I had been making backups using appcmd and so when I did an "appcmd list backups" the only thing I saw was a backup that I don't even remember creating. None of the others were there.     - IIS, ASP.NET, and SPNs Hello there, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 intranet web app that I want to connect to our SQL database using Windows Authentication with a domain account and a trusted connection. I also want, however, to be able to identify the user looking at subfolders of the web site (without impersonation, so that service domain acocunt is used to log into SQL) using Integrated Windows Authentication. Web server is Win2K3 SP1, DCs are Win2K3 R2, SQL server is Win2K Server running SQL Server 2000, and clients are either Win XP Pro or Win2K Pro running IE 6. * Setup * In IIS, I've created a new application pool, and using the Identity tab, have set the identity to configurable, and entered the credentials for the domain service account. Copied the web app source files to the web server, "Created" the application (Properties -> Home Directory -> Application Settings -> Create), and attached that application to my newly created application pool. The root directory is set for annonymous access, and the required subfolders have integrated windows authentication turned on and anonymous access turned off. The domain service account is set up on the SQL Server and given appropriate permissions. * Problem * On the clients, when I go to view the root pages of my web app, the process works fine. The trusted connection gets the data from the SQL Server, and it is all good. However, when the client tries to access a page running under Integrated Windows Authentication, they are prompted to enter credentials. Try entering them, and they are prompted again. After the third attempt, Authentication fails with a "HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials". >From what I have read, I need to use the setspn.exe program on the Domain controller(s) to set up the service account with an SPN. However, after all the documentation that I've read, I'm still not clear on what the purpose of setting up the SPN is, what it does on the domain controller, or why it is necessary in this scenario?     - IIS 7, script mapping, where is "Check file exists?" option Hi, I recently got a new dev machine and got Vista Business for it. I work on a .NET 2.0 web application using VS 2005 SP1. It uses a Data Dynamics ActiveReports to generate reports in PDF format (or Excel). The problem is ActiveReports relies on a a couple of script mappings where the file extensions are for virtual files. i.e. .ArCacheItem is mapped to the ASP.NET DLL but a file with that extension never physical exists. Therefore in IIS 6 and earlier when configuring the mapping you would ensure that the "Check file exists?" option was switched off. I've looked on the Google, Microsoft and Data Dynamics websites and I've looked in the IIS 7 help but no where can I find out how to switch this option off (IIS 7 acts like it's on always) and I've looked through all the options on IIS 7's add script mapping dialog and there is nothing even remotely similar.     - Lost session variables when a page has a missing image I reported this bug years ago and again in December but have not heard anything about it other than a message stating that my contact info was sent to the IIS team and that they would contact me. There is supposedly a Bug ID of 49058. Basically the bug is this: if you have session variables and the user goes to a page that has a missing image, then SOME or all of the session variables will be lost. Binary session variables don't seem to be affected; only SOME string and integer.     - IIS MMC to Specific Server from Command Line Hello, I am looking for a way to use a command line to launch the IIS MMC so that it immediately connects to a specified server. I can do this with most other MMCs using a command like â??compmgmt.msc /computer=ComputerNameâ??. This does not seem to work with the IIS MMC. It only connects to the local PCs IIS services.     - Cant get my web sites to work in IIS 7 Ive recently upgraded to Vista and to IIS7 for managing my web sites. Im having trouble getting some of my site up and running, particularly dynamic sites which run off Access databases and ASP. The error message I get is : "You do not have permission to view this directory or page because of the access control list (ACL) configuration or encryption settings for this resource on the Web server." Ive set the Inernet Guest user account to have permissions to these new folders but its refusing to serve the pages.     - Optimizing IIS to serve large amount of small image files I'm doing some testing here with a static HTM page that contains approx 700 img tags, each image is a JPG approx 1K in size. Total size of all images approx 800K. At T1 speed (1.5Mbps), I figure 800K of data should transfer in a little over 4 seconds. I'm seeing actual page load times over a T1 connection of approx 35 seconds (using FireFox v2.x.... IE6 and IE7 load times are worse, about double that) HTTP keep-alives are enabled on the Windows 2003 SP2 server... I've taken the same content and placed in on a Windows 2003 server in a facility with 15Mbps bandwidth and page load time improves, but still takes about 20 seconds.     - frontpage ext and windows 2003 R2 x64 Hello, Ok I have a new windows 2003 R2 x64 server but I had to deal with the Front Page not in the the install. I found the download on the support site for "FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for Windows x64" I also downloaded the apr 2006 sercurity Patch of the same. I installed both files in correct order. Next I set the Status to Allow in Web Service Extenstion. Bbut when I go to the website and configure server extensions 2002 i get: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" Is there a way to make this work, I saw some notes that sharepoint only could run on IIS in x32 bit mode, is this the same for that "FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for Windows x64" and if so why call it for windows x64.. Anyways, anyone else run into this, anyone have some advice, I relize that it is no longer supported and security head ache, franlky if there was a way to use my visual studio 2003 to connect, I think the other site editor is using the expressions beta. I know I can use an ftp but if i was to take off anon it tells me that my password would be sent i the clear ugh. So what am i missing here how do i link to the site with interdev to develop conencted to the site. How should i go about handling the other person that has expressions. We have web garden settings activated as well. Please let me know what is the best deployment structure for this: 1. One web site, one virtual directory, one application pool for the entire web application with various modules organized as subfolders within virtual directory 2. second option, One web site, multiple virtual directory as per the modules with different application pools associated with virtual directories as per the load scenarios on those modules.     - File Cache and ASP Cache issues I have a very busy site, and I am having an issue with counters for both the File Cache and the ASP cache: The counters for Web Service Cache\Current Files Cached is almost always 0. This should not be, as I understand. IIS should be caching static files in memory. Also, the counters for Active Server Pages\Template Cache Hit Ratio is about 60. I understand that it should be over 80. The server has 4GB of memory. Two w3wp processes are using a total of 1gb. The Process\Private bytes counter shows a total of 2gb being used. browser refreshing problem i have whilst using ebay, when using ebay you
continually have to refresh the page to bring up current information ont eh
site, i have been told by many ebay users that it is a knwon problem with IE7
and i should be using IE6. Can you help me with this problem as i do not want
to go back to using IE6. Does anyone know about this problem and is there
