 - MOM web console and IIS I'm not sure if this is a MOM problem or an IIS problem. I've installed MOM 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6. When I try to go to the web console from IE 7, it gives me an error page that says "This website requires you to log in," but it never gives me the option to enter credentials. When I try to access the web console from Firefox, it lets me enter my credentials, but then gives me the error "Directory Listing Denied." I'm using an admin user name, so there shouldn't be a problem with permissions. Also, if I allow Directory Browsing through IIS, it will let me see the folders and files in a directory list, but it doesn't show the actual web console UI. Any ideas?  - New to IIS and need setup help We are setting up IIS on Windows 2003. We copied our files and structure off of the old NT 4.0 Server and the basic Website works. We have some security issues we are trying to work out but we can not yet figure out how host multiple websites on our server. I assigned a unique IP but it did not take us to the website. In fact we got an error 403 if I remember correctly. Is there a simple way or a document that shows the step by step on how do multiple websites. We have a deadline coming and no trainging dollars.  - can't open SOME files Hello all, I have a problem which is being a major hindrance to being able to work. I have a web (actually a subweb) on a Windows 2003 box, with FPE installed, and all. I can open the project fine in Visual Studio 2008 (on Vista). But all of a sudden yesterday, I can no longer open CERTAIN files. Some files are completely fine, but other ones, when I try to open them, I get an error about "Unable to get file '<filename.ext>' from the Web server." The status bar says "Getting file ... from the web..." as usual, but then that error pops up. I tried recalculating the web. I did a server health check. I stopped and restarted IIS. I deleted the subweb and recreated it. I checked the physical file security properties... I cannot find anything off about the files that don't work, but it just won't let me open them. Any ideas???  - Synchronised Folder Problem Hi All, I have a problem with synchronised folders. Basically I've mapped a drive to a folder on a remote server. I've then marked this as synchronised with the laptop I'm working on. As soon as I disconnect from the server, however, IIS not long appears to see the files and I get an error "operation not supported..." although I can happily work with them in everything else. Can you please advise as obviously I'd like to be able to show the sites to clients from the laptop when not connected to my own network! Cheers, Adam M.  - Adventures in debug land Hello, I'm running an ASP.NET 2.0 application on a Windows Server 2003 x64 server with IIS 6.0. Over the last 1-2 weeks I've been getting regular messages in my Application Log like this: Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, stamp 45d691cc, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.2.3790.4062, stamp 462643a7, debug? 0, fault address 0x0000000000027d8d. From some research I've learned that this is a crash in the IIS process serving my website, and is probably caused by an error in my code. Most posts I've found recommend advanced debugging with several options in tools, nearly all of which have been a bust: * IIS State (apparently) does not work on x64 processors * Debug Diagnostics Tool 1.0 does not work with SP2 * Debug Diagnostics Tool 1.1 was never released as an x64 build * WinDbg is supposed to work, but I'm having lots of trouble with it I'm hoping someone here can help me with WinDbg. I've been unable to get the debugger to attach to my w3wp.exe process without slowing the process to the point that the website becomes unusable. I've tried attaching to the process with Uninvasive checked and unchecked, but both times the debugger seems to require me to periodically press certain commands to keep the process running. I've also tried using the ADPlus script in Crash Mode, but that too seems to severly limit the site as it pauses to get stack dumps for every little exception. I've tried telling it to not dump on First or Second Chance Exceptions, but it still practically kills the responsiveness of the site. Does anyone have any advice? I just want *something* to wait around until w3wp.exe crashes (corresponding with the App Log event) and give me a crash dump for analysis. I don't need minidumps on each exception and I don't want the site to go unresponsive while this is happening (which might even prevent it from crashing in the first place).  - Can't Install IIS - staxmem.dll will not copy I get the message "cannot copy staxmem.dll" when trying to install IIS on my Windows XP Pro, SP3 computer. This file is located in C://Windows/Service Pack Files/I386 . I downloaded a new staxmem.dll file and installed it. However, I still cannot install IIS and get the same message.  - Default ASP.NET version Hi all, We've got quite a few large servers with many sites and I've got a problem with the classic ASP.NET 1.1 / ASP.NET 2.0 being in the same pool problem. As all our sites are now ASP.NET 2.0, is there any way defaulting the .Net version for new sites, so that if anyone creates a new site on any of the servers, they never create a v1.1 site? thanks, Larry.  - DebugDiag won't display analysis We have a Win2K3/IIS6 web server running custom code, and a few months ago the web services began to crash about daily. DebugDiag 1.0 had been installed previously, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled version 1.1, configured the rule, and dump files were created. Unfortunately, DebugDiag won't perform an analysis on any of these files - the file gets about 10-15% loaded, and then DebugDiag hangs. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall, but the same thing happens. I haven't tried to go back to version 1.0, but I may try this tonight. Does anyone have an idea of what I might try?  - Capturing crash dumps with iisdiag Hello, I've been trying to debug crashes in w3wp.exe (faulting module webengine.dll) and came across advice to install iisdiag & the Debug Diagnostics Tool. I did this and set up a few crash rules, none of which was capturing any data as implied by the wizard & other sources online. I finally got something to happen when setting up a crash rule for all instances of w3wp.exe, but the crash dumps created by the tool are always 0 bytes in size. I also get random "Unknown Error" dialog popups when using the tools, often when first launching it or activating/deactivating a rule. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the tool several times, rebooting when asked, all to no avail. Is there a known issue about this that I'm missing?  - 2003 server running IIS We have a windows 2003 server running IIS, mysql and php. Our intranet website is located on a SAN and is accessed via a redirect for address: http://intranet.oururl.co.uk We need to create a complete copy of the site for development and testing which we can access via http://devnet.oururl.co.uk How can we set up a second website/redirect if the ip address is the same as for the existing site? The website appears to be set up correctly because in IIS manager the devnet file structure is shown - as it is for the intranet website. However, we cannot start the website service or the redirect because it suggests the port number is already used (for the intranet site). If we use different port numbers for the website and redirect then it doesn't appear to pick up the new redirect as it takes us through to the intranet site rather than the devnet site.  - different results when querying Index Server directly and from SQL I have an (Access-) application which is connected via ADO to a SQL Express Server. I query the Index Server (which is registered as linked server in my SQL Express Server ) using SQL. I use it to perform a combined database / file system search. anyways, I realized, that the results are different from the ones I get when I log onto the file server and query the service over computer management - Index Service. Through the linked server I get 24 rows, querying the service directly brings up 44 results. I use the same catalog, the same search word ( contains(''cmbs'') / "cmbs" in the textfield and extended search chosen). I deleted the catalog, made a new one - same thing I made a new linked server registration - same thing I'm outta ideas now ... can anybody help?  - Network folder as virtual directory cannot accessible I got a Win2003 domain controller and it has a public folder "test", everyone can access all files with full privileges (Security & Share tab). I got a standalone Win2003 Web Edition too. I tried to add a virtual directory called "test" and pointed to "\\domaincontroller\test\" I could succesfully added the virtual directory and all files are listed. However I cannot browse them (I just want to browse simple directory list IIS supported) and "HTTP Error 500 - Internal server error." occurs.  - IIS 6 App Pool Cycling Our organization runs a classic ASP (VBScript) application that is not well behaved. During periods of heavy traffic, worker processes spike into high CPU utilization conditions, affecting the performance of all sites on the server. When I first came here, the routine procedure was to watch Performance Monitor manually, logging on to the box and forcibly killing worker processes stuck in high CPU conditions through Task Manager. This was utterly unacceptable, so I implemented IIS app pool recycling based on CPU health parameters. Implementing IIS pool cycling caused the rise of the dread Service Unavailable message (which of course wasn't a problem when staff was forcibly crashing pools). I think I have a reasonable understanding of why (connections bound to a worker process that is draining and no longer servicing requests). My assumption is that the only way to completely eliminate Service Unavailable in this scrnario is to shut off HTTP Keep-Alive entirely, to avoid persistent connections and force each request to establish a new connection and hence worker process binding. Is that correct? What are the performance implications of such a change? I know. I know. "Fix the code." That's something that we're working on, but in the mean time, I need a better Band-Aid. There are a lot of issues, from poorly constructed SQL queries in ADO, misbehaved third-party controls, etc. The application is overdue for a re-write in .NET, but that's going to take quite a while. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. In particular, I'd like to better understand the connection/worker process binding mechanism, and the "graceful" worker process shut down and start up procedure.  - App Pool Shutdown After Invalid Identity I have a WCF web service hosted in IIS 6 w2k3 server. The app pool runs as a domain account. Under normal circumstances, it works fine. Occasionally the server has an unexpected shutdown and comes back up but the network is still down. IIS can't validate the app pool account credentials because there's no network, and logs event 1021: "The identity of application pool, 'STLUP' is invalid. If it remains invalid when the first request for the application pool is processed, the application pool will be disabled." The network comes back up and a request comes in to the service, but IIS still can't create a worker process. I get event 1057: "The identity of application pool 'STLUP' is invalid, so the World Wide Web Publishing Service can not create a worker process to serve the application pool. Therefore, the application pool has been disabled." The app pool can then be restarted manually and all is well again. Was the first message misleading when it said "If it remains invalid when the first request for the application pool is processed..."? Based on that, I would expect when the first request comes in and the network is back up, that IIS would validate the credentials and create the process. I also isolated the issue by creating a simple html page, disabling the app pool account, and restarting IIS. I get the expected 1021 event. Then I re-enable the account and browse the page, but still get the 1057 and "Service Unavailable" until I manually start the app pool. Is this the expected behavior? It doesn't seem very robust that IIS can't recover from invalid credentials on startup, when the credentials are valid when the request comes in. When you install install ISS ( 5.1 - Windows XP ) the locahost is always on your c: drive. I have 3 Hard Drivers / Partitions, can the "localhost" be set to be on any other harddrive but C: ?  - Windows authentication prompting I have truly spent over a week now tearing my hair out. I have searched *everywhere* on the web and tried *everything*. For my sanity, I do hope someone here can help. I have Win 2003 R2 SP2, IIS 6. With "Integrated Windows authentication" (NTLM) switched on, I can access an (ASP.NET) web page ok on my server. I click to cause a "long operation" to start. This long operation is just a Sleep(90 seconds). After precisely 60 seconds up pops a "Windows credentials" dialog in web browser. I can reauthenticate; it will then reappear 60 seconds later. After precisely 3 of these, or if i ever "cancel" the dialog, I will get a 401.1 Access denied. The point here is that this makes debugging of ASP.NET application impossible. Note that I have reproed with just a sleep, no debugging. I am unsure when this started happening. I feel crazy, but I cannot have managed to develop for so long with this going on. I have tried different web browsers, cross machines, different permissions etc etc etc. I have reinstalled both IIS & ASP.NET 2.x on machine. I now (think) I find that on another server running Win2003 *R2* SP2 this happens there too, but on one running Win2003 no-R1/2 *SP2* it does *not* happen (but don't rely on that 100%).  - PHP 5 Hi I installed php 5 via the installer. Naturally it doesnt work on my IIS 6 server. I do have the php ext set to allowed. Unfortunmatley there are many other extenstions and no good instructions on which should be loaded. I am trying to get an off the wall open source app called MantisBT to run.  - ISAPI filter to modify IIS logging Hi, We're running IIS6 websites behind a load balancing applicance with W3C logging enabled. The issue is that for every request logged it displays the load balancers ip address as the client-ip therefore making it impossible to determine the source of the request from the logs. The load balancer does however add the original ip address to an X-Header in the http header. What we'd like to do is to be able to take this X-Header value and insert it into the IIS logfiles as the c-ip value. Does anyone know if this is possible perhaps using an ISAPI filter? Thanks - J.  - ISAPI authentication filter I have a custom ISAPI auth filter that is set up on ms exchange web site. I have made some changes and now after the user logs in I get the user credentials in the url. So the url is no longer https://hostname/exchange, it is https://hostname/exchange/?user=usernamevalue&password=passwordvalue&referer=%2Fexchange.  - How do you enable download of files with unknown ext, no ext whilst Hi, I'm trying to set up an Internal HTTP File Share with IIS 6.0 on Win2K3SP1, but I can't figure out how to enable the IIS server to return files with no extensions as well as files with unknown extensions whilst allowing known file types, html, txt etc, to be returned with the correct mime type. If I add mime mapping "." -> application/octet-stream I can download files with no extension, known files get returned with the correct mime type, but I can't download files with unknown extension e.g. foo.bar. If I add mime mapping ".*" -> application/octet-stream I can download files with no and unknown extensions, but valid extensions are also returned as application/octet-stream, making it impossible to read html files and txt files in the browser (other than IE that actually inspects the contents of the file). Is it impossible to configure IIS 6.0 to allow for these 3 rules? 1. Files with no extension must be returned as application/octet- stream 2. Files with unknown extensions must be returned as application/octet- stream 3. Files with known extension must be returned with the corresponding mime type.  - Capturing a specific IP Is there a way with IIS 6 to redirect an incoming request if it is from a specific IP address? I don't want to block it as such, I want to make it direct to an website for 'banned' IPs. The server hosts around 30 sites, but we have two or three persistent fixed IPs that come in that we would like to intercept and point elsewhere.  - directory browsing for .mdb files not working I have a virtual directory which points to a shared folder in a remote server. I have enabled directory browsing for that virtual directory. When I click on any files like a .doc file or .xls file or .zip I get a prompt to save the file or open the file. But when I click a .mdb file I get a run time error. Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application.  - 2000 Server IIS Admin service unresponsive Iâ??ve got a problem on a 2000 server. Itâ??s the DC with Exchange 2000, File & Print, Backup Exec, Symantec Antivirus Server and Citrix Secure Gateway Secure Ticket Authority installed. Whatâ??s happening is that every weekend at differing times over the last few weeks, the www and exchange services have all stopped working. They show as started in the services console but are unresponsive if I try to restart them. I think that this may be to do with the IIS Admin service as this controls both the Exchange and www services. Iâ??ve been getting around it by restarting the server every Monday which gets it going again and itâ??s fine all week. Do you have any ideas as to possible causes or steps I can take to find out whatâ??s causing this?  - IIS OK from public IP but refusing requests from internal network My website is hosted on a W2K3 server. It is accessible from any public IP address (internet). However, it is not accessible from any private IP address (internal network). The configuration is as follows: Client 192.168.0.101 Server 192.168.0.11 My network is connected to the internet via a dedicated T1 link. My hardware firewall routes port 80 traffic from internet to the IIS Server at 192.168.0.11. My site works fine from any internet IP address. However, my site can not be accessed from any computer on the internal network. HTTP://192.168.0.11 or http://mycompanywebsite.com fails. http://127.0.0.1 also fails on the IIS server box. The IIS log indicates that the request was received but it logs 404 0 2 error. (Denied dud to LOCKDOWN policy) I have no IP address restrictions on this website.  - SSL error: This page contains secure and non secure items I'm not really sure where to ask this question. I've asked it in the sharepoint forum, but thought I'd ask it in here as well. The issue is that we have a site. It's a sharepoint site. I'm not sure if that's a variable or not, but thought I'd mention it. When viewing this site, you get the 'this site contains secure and non-secure items' message in IE only. Firefox is fine. If you view the source code on any of the pages on this site (including the GENERATED source code) you don't see any assets/associated files being requested via HTTP. You don't see any assets/associated files being requested from another HTTPS site. Any idea what would trigger this type of warning in IE? Could it be SharePoint? IIS? IE itself? I'm completely stumped. In terms of SharePoint, child and sibling sites of this one don't have this issue.  - Corrupt applicationHost.config Hi All, I have just installed Vista Ulitmate and Visual Studio 2008 on a new laptop. I then created a new .NET 2.0 website to continue development of an existing web application. I created a new ApplicationPool using the IIS Manager. Then I got an IIS Manager error applicationHost.config Line number: 842 Error: Configuration file is not well-formed XML The error appears to be that the last line of the configuration file has been corrupted... So the question is how do I edit the configuration file to repair the damage? I tried notepad but although I can open and edit the file, I can't save it? - I go to the windows components on add/remove programs and select
Application Server
- Which includes IIS in its details - I click next and it asks for the
Windows Server Standard edition CD1 to be put in the cd drive looking for the
iisback.vbs file - this doesn't exist on the CD1 or cd2 for that matter i've
searched for it on both cd's and my exist installation of Server 2003

- I then have to back out of the install because it will not allow me to
continue.

Does anybody know what pre-requistes?? is required to install iisback.vbs b4
i install IIS?

iisback.vbs is installed as part of IIS in any standard installation
in %windir%\System32

If it doesn't existing if your existing installation, then something
seems wrong with the source of your Windows Server 2003 and would
explain why you are having problems.
