    - IIS session Variables not shared through dif. App Pools. We are having trouble sharing sessions through diferent applications that each has it's own app pool. Is this normal? I mean, sessions are not shared? Are they only valid in one App Pool ? Anyway we're trying to use the product "Session.Farm" from Groat.com to share them, but it's not working. Any ideas? clues? special knowledge on this ?     - Problem with front page site on secure site 2003 server/IIS 6 / Frontpage 2003 Hello all. I have 2 websites on a single server that point to the same content directory. One is internal, port 80, anonymous authentication. The other is SSL, 443, no anonymous, basic authentication only. I have a front page form that simply sends the content to an email address. It works fine for the internal site. On the external site, it works fine for administrators, but ordinary users get prompted for credentials when they hit the submit button. Only administrator credentials will allow them to hit the submit button. I assume its is a permission thing somewhere, but I can't find where. Some where the anonymous account must have more permissions than the users group. The page you go to after submit is: http:/...../_vti_bin/shtml.dll/useraccess.htm I checked the NTFS permissions on the dll and the htm file, they look fine. I'm not sure what else I can look for.     - IIS 6.0: Contacting all/spesific worker process I got an .Net applicaton running on IIS 6.0 and under DefaultAppPool I have set max worker process = 2.. Sometimes I need to invalidate some cache in the application via an url and I have no control which worker process I hit. So one of the worker processes have 'fresh' data and the other have old data.     - ISAPI URL Rewrite Hi guys, I have a question about URL Rewriting and I can't find an answer in the past posts. I have to set up an URL rewrite system on a web site, something easy like this: http://localhost/mypage.asp?categoryname=testcategory&productname=testproduct I have to rewrite it as follow http://localhost/testcategory/testproduct.htm Nothing hard: using an ISAPI filter (regular expression driven) everything works fine. But... is it possibile to make the rewrite work in the href contained in the HTML returned to the client? I mean, if I have a link like this in mypage.asp, why it doesn't become rewritten? <a href="http://localhost/mypage.asp?categoryname=testcategory1&productname=testproduct1">mylink</a> doesn't automatically become <a href="http://localhost/testcategory1/testproduct1.htm">mylink</a> There's a way of doing that with an ISAPI without rewriting all my links manually?     - Hardware configuration for a system Hi, I am trying to decide on a hardware configuration for a system. The system includes one main DB (SQL Server 2000 / 2005), IIS and several very low resources consuming applications. The system is very simple - a client makes a request to a web service, the web service runs a set of up to 2 SELECT queries and one UPDATE on two specific tables in the DB, formats the data and returns a response to the client. A heavy set of the UPDATE and INSERT is made on a daily basis at off-pick hours. A small amount of INSERT occurs every now and then. The DB itself contains only three tables which are heavily indexed. Most of the queries are done on a single table which has about 2.5 million rows, and is growing by about 20,000 rows daily. The tricky part is the volume of requests to the IIS : we are expecting about 200 millions requests per day. We have a caching mechanism implemented in our web application which reduces access to the DB by about 25%. The low resources applications would probably run on the same server as the DB. I originally thought of two servers : one 2*XEON with 4GB RAM running Windows 2003 Standard x64 with SQL Server 2005 x64 for the DB - and a quad of XEONS with 8GB RAM running Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 acting as the IIS.     - IIS 6 timeout on secure site We have a perl-based site that has a secure chat capability. I've been able to edit the general IIS timeout, and the CGI timeout to acceptable values. Now the site requires the user to log in every 10 minutes. Our users want to be able to monitor the traffic w/o interaction for exxtended periods. I suspect that the metatbase default parameter PasswordCacheTTL is the culprit (the default value of this parameter is 600 seconds which is the time interval of the login requirement). How do I change this value to a greater delay? BTW, the Microsoft documentation suggests that this parameter is present in the W3SVC section of the metabase: It is not. Is appears onlty in the default values. The sample perl scripts on the MS site do not work. Any suggestions or other ideas?     - Problem with search results on IIS 5 Hi All, We have recently upgraded our website from IIS 4 to IIS 5. In the new box, we have configured the index server and installed the web site on IIS 5, we are having problem in search functionality of the website, which uses index server. When we do search based on phrase, it gives the results on the first page saying '50 documents found' and showing 10 records on first page and enabling 'Next 10 hits', but when we click on 'Next 10 hits', it is showing 'No documents found'.     - IIS 6.0 Manager for Windows XP - can't connect I have installed the IIS Manager on a desktop machine on the same LAN as the Windows 2003 server. I have opened it through Control Panel > Admin Tools as it seems that it doesn't work the same form Computer Management, even though it appears there. However it cannot connect to the server. I can find it when I 'browse', and I am using the right username and password, but it says: Error: Unable to connect to this computer.     - Failed to access IIS metabase I have installed SQL Server 2005, including Reporting Services 2005 on Windows XP Professional in a standalone environment. I can see the Reports and ReportServer folders in IIS in Administrative Tools and all settings appear to be appropriate. My first problem is that, when I try to access "http://localhost/ReportServer", I get an error "Failed to access IIS metabase". I have looked at KB article "http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=267904" which is referred to in the error message but it appears to relate to Windows Server 2003. Secondly, I expected to get the same error when trying to access "http://localhost/Reports" but in this case I get a message "Directory Listing Denied" which seems to indicate that the metabase is not an issue here. I can see the directory listing if I activiate this option in IIS in Admin Tools but I can't browse the contents of the Reports web page. Can anyone provide me with a solution?     - IIS Authentication Question I have a Windows 2003/SP1/IIS6 server that I'm trying to configure authentication properly for. When I have Integrated Windows authentication enabled, users inside the domain are not prompted to authenticate, as expected. Users not logged into the domain do receive an auth prompt, but it's trying to authenticate against local system accounts, not domain accounts. So, I turn basic authentication on (server does have an SSL cert), and outside users get the prompt, which is looking at domain accounts for authentication. However, my internal users already logged into the domain are promtped to log into the site, as well. Is there a way to have users inside my network using integrated windows (so they're not prompted), while users outside the network (coming in through the firewall) are using basic and do get the prompt with will authenticate them against the domain? I do know that users can enter their UPN, but I'd like to avoid this in an attempt to keep things simple. Thanks. Tag: IISSYNC problems Tag: 382334

    - Error: 401.3 even with Full Control NTFS permission to Everyone Background info: 401.3 error: Unauthorized Due to ACL on Resource Hi, I am running into a weird problem. I have a web farm setup with 4 frontend servers, 2 win2k and 2 win2k3. Last night, the 2 win2k3 servers all of a sudden started producing this 401.3 error (login box poped up, entered credential, and got the error). I then went into the servers to see permission settings for IIS and NTFS and event viewer, and found no suspicious hacking attempts nor any wrong permission setting. Whatever I tried (like change the account IIS application runs as), it just wouldn't work. I then grant Everyone Full Control to the home directory just to make sure it works with the least restriction -> again, it didn't help. It just kept throwing this 401.3 error. I fully understand how 401.3 differs from other 401 errors, and I had never had to deal with this problem with so much efforts. I think it is probably something else that manifested as 401.3. My Win2k3 has SP1 applied with all Windows Update patches applied.     - Enable Integrated Windows Authentication (requires restart) Setting in IE 6 Hello, I have a internal website running on IIS 6.0/Windows 2003 SP1 set to Integrated Authentication only. The server is a member of our Windows 2000 domain. All Windows 2000 domain-member machines can get to the site with no problem. All Windows XP domain-member machines are prompted for their user/pass/domain and it fails after 3 attempts even though you type in your correct user/pass/domain. This problem goes away if you turn off the "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication (requires restart)" Setting in IE6 on the XP machines. If you turn on this setting on 2000 machines it fails as well. On an non domain member, it doesn't matter what this setting is. It will prompt you for your user/pass/domain and let you in with a valid account. With the failures I see the following in the security event log of the server. It shows that no username and domain was passed for kerberos authentication. I do not want to turn this setting off on all my Windows XP machines. Anyone know how I can fix this on the server side?     - Change Windows Password - error 5 I have installed the IIS feature to change your windows password when it expires when you log on to OWA. Now this function works fine when we have our warehouse personnel open OWA while on our network. But, if we have office personnel traveling and their password expires they get the IIS change password screen only when they enter the new password the response they get is Error 5.     - Reset or Recycling of App Pools - Difference? We have an web application that stops creating certain dynamic pages after running for a week or so. The app pool recycle does not take care of the problem but a stop and restart of the pool does take care of the problem. So what is carried over in a recycle that does not carry over on a stop\start?     - Application resets after a few minutes of activity. Hi, I have an ASP application running on IIS 6.0. Every few minutes the application seems to unload itself and the Application_OnStart function is called. This causes the application to lose all the information stored in the application variables. I am using the default application pool settings which should recycle every 29 hours and time-out after 20 minutes of idleness. but for me it seems to recyle after just a few minutes of activity.     - ASP Pages Stops Loading after some time We have a web server(Win2k3 IIS6.0) Quad processor serving an Intranet website . This website has been proted to this server 2 days back .The problem is after some time the server stops serving the .asp pages (html txt and other pages are served fine but it only stops serving .asp or .aspx etc files. We made it work by restarting IIS service but it seems to be happening every 2 hours or so.     - Why won't IIS serve ASP pages? I posted this question for the Win Media Center Edition discussion group; I should probably have posted it here instead. Here's the situation, I'd love to have your insights: Recently got a new box running Win MCE (2002). Installed IIS components without any trouble, and it appears that all of the required directories (inetpub, wwwroot, etc) are in place, as are iisstart.asp and localstart.asp. The network is functioning; I pinged localhost and computer_name and everything ran as it should. Any html file serves just fine through http://localhost/. The problem is that it will not serve any .asp files, including localstart.asp. I keep getting the error 500 white screen. Even unchecking the friendly error messages doesn't give me anything useful (although I'm not entirely sure where to go looking on the computer for a detailed logfile entry about the error). I've been all through the MMC a dozen times looking for anything unusual. The default web is there. I don't know exactly what the permissions should be set to, but this is a development system for me alone, and I'm logged on as an administrator, with script execution permission set, so that should not be the problem. Some versions of IIS apparently allow you to designate which file extensions to allow and which to block. (V6.0 apparently comes locked down, so the ASP extension has to be selected in order to display ASP files, but I can't find anything similar in v5.1.) Am I just overlooking it? I give up. What's left to consider? I've done this on previous machines (XP Pro) and don't remember having these sorts of mysteries on my hands. Please offer the most likely steps I should take to resolve this.     - Checking for response.redirect, and isolating exceptions. I'm trying to isolate the origin of a large number of exceptions. Is there a way to search an asp.net app for locations that use response.redirect, response.end, and server.transfer? I don't have ready access to the source code. Any other tips on how to isolate the cause of exceptions, when you're dealing with a *large* number of exceptions? Over the period of a day, it averages to about 40 exceptions per request.     - DLLHOST Hi - posting this here and Exchange because I really don't know where the problem lies. Running Outlook Web Access on IIS5.0 and Exchange 5.5. Everytime time a users opens a connection to OWA, the server running IIS spawns another session of DLLHOST.EXE and this session remains open even after disconnect. Eventually, once this DLLHOST session consumes about 50 mb of memory, access to OWA hangs. Can anyone shed some lite on this. I've seen alot of discussion on it and it seems the only "fix" I have seen is to write a script that ends this runaway process every x times a day.     - What's the proper usage of CPU and memory? What would be the proper CPU and memory usage for a web server? Right now, we are redesigning the infrastructure for the webservers and it seems that we have too many web severs. Most of the web servers are showing the avg cpu usage from 5 to 20 %, which seems to be low.. and the memory usage from 10 to 20 %.     - MS IIS Memory Usage Growth We have a web-application running in MS IIS 6.0 under MS Winsows 2003 with all latest updates installed. The application is a COM-server, exposed for users via ASP pages. During a stress-test we encounter the following problem. Dllhost memory usage increasingly grows and never lowers down to its initial value after all sessions closed. The COM-server itself does not have memory leaks, we know this because we monitor memory usage in our application. The COM-object gets successfully destroyed and clears its memory each time a request is done. As for Dllhost, it seems as if it never frees up all memory back. We tried to change session timeouts and even to run the application in the sessionless mode. Nothing helps. Our aim is to process approx. 10 requests per second (for beginning). Normally, if 10 new users are logged at the moment T and get some resources allocated for their requests, IIS must clear up all resources, which were used for 10 existing users logged in at the moment T-<some-timeout>. If this is true, then the following behaviour is anticipated. After the application test started (M0), Dllhost starts to eat memory to some, possibly high, value because of new requests. Once the timeout period elapsed since M0, the memory usage must stabilize: new memory allocations are equal to the memory which is freed up in every moment. So, what is the timeout for the sessionless mode? If sessions are used, what additional time should pass after session timeout before IIS actually frees up the session memory? We tried to use sessions with 5 minutes timeout, but memory remains in use after 5 minutes. What memory overheads per session are normally charged by Dllhost per asp-page display? What data is stored in the memory, used by Dllhost? How should we set up IIS in order to force memory cleaning exactly by timeout? Currently IIS is ran out of physical memory (1Gb) in 10 minutes after the test start and begins to swap, so that performance decreases tremendously. I've read about some W3SVC parameters in the registry, which might possibly help us to change IIS caching policy, but it was about static files, whereas we host mostly dynamic asp-pages.     - create site..? In IIS 6, I am trying to create a site under the default web site. In the manager, when i highlight the 'default web site', click new, website, point it to the directory under inetpub, it creats the site not under the default web site, but as a site under web sites.     - Backup Metabase with Password Automatically Hi, Does anyone know if there is a way to back up my metabase daily (and automatically) using a password? I'd like to backup the metaback directory daily. If my server dies and requires a reinstall I need to be able to restore my metabase.     - server 2003 and IIS - Can't access websever public Ip from outside network We are running 2003 R2 and IIS. Public IP is set to route to internal webserver ip 192.168.1.10 on port 80. We can ping the public IP from outside and get a reply. We can get to the website through localhost and through internal ip. Checked all router settings, port fowarding, etc. Even opened up all ports. We disabled the windows firewall and the firewall service. Does anyone know what is blocking outside traffic here.     - Gears never stop "Please wait while your changes are processed' Had IIS 6 on Win2003 system. Also had Sharepoint Services v2 installed. System was current on patches. Developers wanted to publisher their new gadgets to the system and wanted Front Page Extensions. Installed but every time we try to extend we get the never ending gear. If we try to detect and repair - the button does not do ANYTHING. I've uninstalled Sharepoint Services and uninstalled/re-installed FPE.     - IIS running on localhost only with XP Pro Hi I'm running XP Pro, not on a domain or anything. Latest service packs. I'm using IIS to develop Visual Studio 2005 ASP.NET applications. I also have Visual Studio.Net/SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 on this one machine. It is very much a localhost setup. I want to prevent IIS from going out to the internet. I just want it to listen locally. How can I do this? Bare in mind that not being part of a domain and not being a Windows server means I don't have access to the usual security features. I want to keep anonymous access for convenience (firewall will hopefully stop anything untoward). Can you tell me how to do this?     - Server Application Error I'm trying to get IIS to run ASP files on my local computer. When I try to access and ASP file, I get the "Server Application Error" message.     - Need IIS server to serve PDF files!! (registry?) I have uploaded a few PDF files to my Windows Server 2003 IIS 6.0 webserver. However, they are not available on the web as I didn't change any settings to allow PDF files. The server is remote, and I cannot log into it presently, but I can access a desktop machine connected on the same LAN through Remote Desktop. I can connect to the server's registry through the desktop machine using regedit. Is there any way I can edit the registry to allow IIS to show the PDF files or this not going to be possible at all?     - IIS6 won't serve files without extensions Hi All: I "inherited" a website that I migrated to server 2003 web edition. The developer used a "poor-man's redirection" scheme where he would use a static file with a meta refresh. So he'd have a link like: mysite.com/somepage where "somepage" was text file with some code like: <HTML> <META HTTP-EQUIV='Refresh' CONTENT='0; URL=http://mysite.com/anotherpage.asp?gymid=82'> </HTML> This was working on the previous server (Win2K) but now the pages are not loaded and instead gives a 404 error.     - IIS users In active directory I see the followign four user accounts: IWAM_Server1 IUSR_Server1 IWAM_Server2 IUSR_Server2 Server 1 and server 2 represent the names of the server. These servers do not have IIS installed on them. What are theses user accounts used for they are all disabled in Active Directory?     - Web Site displays "Under Construction" page only when accessed over internet Hi I'm trying to setup IIS on my Win2K3 server. I have several virtual directories under Default Web Site, all of which can be accessed using IE from any machine in my LAN. However, when accessing it over the internet I just get the under construction page when requesting the root directly, or "The page cannot be displayed" when trying to access any of the virtual folders. Directory Browsing is enabled on all of these and return what I expect when I access IIS from ony of my LAN machines. This isn't an firewall issue either as port 80 is open and forwards onto my Win2K3 server fine. This is proved by the fact that IIS return the "Under Construction" page when accessing over the internet, My Default Web Site uses DefaultAppPool, which is configured to use "Network Service" account.     - EFS setup for IUSR_machinename I have an ASP website that needs to access a file that has been encrypted using EFS and now I need to allow the IUSR_<machinename> user account to have access to this file. The problem that I have is that when I try to add the IUSR... account to the EFS file I do not get the option of selecting the IUSR... account - only allows searching for users via the current Domain.     - Problems with IIS Browsing Local IPs I have a Windows 2003 Server Web Edition I just setup and it is now having problems browsing itself on the internal networks. My server is behind a firewall on the 10.0.0.x network. It's specific IP is 10.0.0.6. When I browse from outside the firewall, going through the firewall and hitting 10.0.0.6 it works great. When I browse from the machine itself at 10.0.0.6 or 127.0.0.1 I receive an error on the server. I ran WFetch on the address and I receive the following error 0x2749 (A request to send or receive data was disallowed because the socket is not connected and (when sending on a datagram socket using a sendto call) no address was supplied.): connect() This all seemed to break after I installed Apache Tomcat with the Jakarta ISAPI filter (which is needed for one thing on my server). I have tried removing Tomcat and Jakarta and it does not resolve the issue. How in the heck do you troubleshoot something like this? Does anyone have any idea where the problem may be? I'm running a pair of clustered nodes using win2k advanced, SP4. I have IIS
installed and clustered. After having about 300+ clustered resource objects,
I can no longer run IISSYNC. It erturns no errors, it simply hangs. On a rare
occasion, I get the message "The server threw an exception."

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
