    - Information on DDoS attack Hi, I have a site that was attacked by a DDoS for three days. The company that I rent the server decided to shut my server down. It was also causing problem on their other server and even their own website was down. Is there any way to defend a Win2K server against a DDoS attack ?     - HELP: Transparent HTTP proxy through NAT Hi, I've got a remote system connected to the internet that I'm trying to connect to. The remote system runs a web server, on port 80. The remote system is behind NAT, so connections cannot be directly made to it, and the NAT system cannot be configured (it's connected via a GPRS card, and the service provider cannot allow port forwarding. But I can make connections out from the remote system. So what I have devised is a couple of applications: One sits on a server machine on the internet which I can make connections to. This application listens for connections from my web browser, and connections from the remote application. The other (the remote application) sits on the remote system, and establishes a socket connection to the web server, and a connection to the server application. Each of these programs transfers data transparently between it's two connections, effectively creating a "tunnel" between the web browser and the web server. I've tested the application with telnet (to a telnet server), and it works correctly. However, when I connect to a web server through it, I get corrupted web pages. I've checked the data being sent through the system, and it appears that the web browser is getting confused with the responses from the web server, causing images in the wrong place, and images not to appear. From my analysis, I can only surmise that the web browser is being confused because the TCP connection essentially ends at the server application, not the (remote) web server. This means that the TCP requests are being responded to by the server application, and unsolicited data is arriving moments later. The web browser sees the unsolicited data as responses to more recent requests which have not yet been acknowledged by the server application.     - Restart IIS Web Application With Thread After Machine Reboot I have an application which runs in its own application pool under the default web site in IIS 6.0. One of the critical elements of my application is a background thread that runs every 5 minutes to check if any server actions are required. This thread is started up in the Application_Start method of global.asax. Everything works fine until the web server reboots - even though the default web site is started correctly, the web application and its background thread are not started until I send an initial manual request - in this case, an aspx page that belongs to this application. I have checked in Services that the IIS Admin Service is set to start up automatically. Is there a way to use the management tool to ensure the background thread is automatically started? The only other idea I have is to build a command-line application which fires an initial request to this application and add this to the startup programs, but this is not an ideal approach, especially since I would need to ensure this runs after the IIS startup.     - Drops all multiple IPs when replacing the SSL Hi! Has anyone else experience this in IIS 6. When I replace a SSL certificate with a renewed version for a certain website. All multiple IPs under SSL for that website is dropped except for one IP. Then i'll have to enter all of them again. Is this a bug i IIS ?     - Testing an IIS setup? I'd like to know if there was a way I could check my IIS setup. Here's what I've got: Network with IIS server (Win2003Svr) and my workstation and Cisco Pix router. I want to know if the router is working ok, but I do not want to get anyone else to test it coz they are all dopy and can't give me the feedback nor their time to check my setup as I fix little problems. I've tried using the internet IP address of our router in a web page, but the router seems to quash any attempt of going out then straight back in again.     - Limit on number of outbound request on IIS We have a simple app to create an xml object (Msxml2.XMLHTTP.3.0) and open a request to a url. We send async and check xml object every 5 seconds. The app is a simple VB app that gets created in ASP/VBScript and is stored in Session(). Everything works fine under light load, the xml is retreived, readyState=4 consistently. When we start to get a higher number of concurrent requests the object seems to get stuck and always returns a readyState=1. After about 4 minutes we abort the .send and return error to user. When we get into this state we can access the same url via a web browser (takes about 25 seconds), or through a simple vbscript that creates the same VB object. So the problem appears to be with IIS or the way or VB app interacts with IIS? The tcp packets are going out, acking, responding, closing, but still readyState=1. Tried setting various ASP options ListBackLog, ProcessorThreadMax, RequestQueueMax, etc. same issue. Set VB to single thread, apartment thread, neither appears to work. The app is in a virtual dir set to Medium pooled. CPU is < 60%, memory is low, no probs with dllhost, etc. Win 2k server, IIS 5. Seems like requests are getting queued and then stuck.     - Multiple virtual servers problem I have configured two additional virtual web servers under IIS6 and am using Host Header Names to differentiate them. They have the same IP and port as the default server. I found that they do not work unless the default server is stopped. Is this correct? I can find no reference to this in any documentation. If the default server is stopped and they are started they are accessible and function perfectly from the local network. However, they return HTTP400 errors when I try and access them from the Internet. They both have CNAME entries in our Internet domain DNS, as well as the internal DNS, and the update has been propogated throughout the Internet. The server is behind a Cisco PIX running NAT with an internal IP mapped to a valid external IP. If I stop them and then start the default server it works properly when accessed from the Internet.     - IIS 6 Multi-threaded Debugging Help with Events: 1009 and 1002 Hi, I am having trouble pinpointing the cause of w3wp.exe processes crashing. I am running Win2003, IIS 6.0, and have my own ISAPI filter running. My filter performs a lookup in AD, spawns a thread to watch a queue, and opens a backchannel request to another http port on the same box. I am using the Default App Pool with 5 processes in the garden. I also have it setup that after 5 process failures in 5 minutes to disable the App Pool. I have the recycle time set to 1 minute (just to trigger the problem faster). I only see this behavior under extreme loads, perhaps I'm just impatient. I have run the IISDump utility but the process ids from the .dmp files not match the process ids in the Event log for event 1009. I would like to see the call stack from the w3wp processes that crash. Is there any way to gather this information after the process has crashed. The only way I know which process to run IISState against is by looking at the event log, after it has crashed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rihard Tag: IIS/ASP Problems Tag: 342476

    - ASP Error "The requested resource is in use" I am getting error from my Windows 2003 server IIS running in IIS 5.0 mode. The error comes out of ASP pages while ASPX pages work without any problem. I read somewhere that the error is is caused in ASP by the ISAPI caching setting in IIS. But I have caching enabled. This works without any problem in Windows 2000. I also use application protection protection high in both 2000 and 2003. I tried disabling it and still I get the same error. After a little investigation I found that the user running as the COM+ application created by the IIS is not an administrator on the Windows 2003 server whereas it is administrator on the Windows 2000 server. On Windows 2003 the account has power user privileges. Does the user need to be administrator on the server? How is it that all ASPX pages under the same application are working without any problem? There is no log in the event log but the error code in W3SVC1 log says: 401 2 2148074254 and 500 0 170 Thanks. James Tag: IIS/ASP Problems Tag: 342472

    - IIS and Windows 2000 Hi guyz:) My mates running IIS on Win2k system, but has trouble deleting psyical directory and/or file via IIS. I guess this would be due to NTFS permissions granted under Windows wouldn't it. Access under PSW is Read only which I would assume would apply to uses accessing the web server. I told my mate to make sure the security under the psyical directory is Full Control, Read, Write & Modify, Is thid correct ?     - HTTP/1.1 500 Server Error hello, i'm teaching myself vb .net. i've reached the end of my book where they discuss web applications and asp .net. i'm attempting to follow along as the authors create a sympal asp .net web application. i am running windows xp pro. i have installed iis 5.x via add/remove windows components. i think that i have front page server extensions installed but i'm not positive, nor am i sure i need to have them installed for this example. in visual studio 2003 i select new project, and attemt to create a new asp .net web application. i get a message box with the error message: "The Web server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web projext located at the following URL: 'http://localhost/WebApplication1'.     - iismt - caught out with IDQ and bad mappings Hi Transferred a site from IIS4 to IIS6 the other day and was quite impressed. However, we were having problems with the FrontPage2002 search engine component. I checked that under "Web Service Extensions" in IIS6 management that I had allowed "All unknown CGI extensions" as I know from bitter experience that IDQ falls under that category. However, still no joy. Was coming up with errors finding "/_vti_script/mypage.htm0.idq" saying "the system cannot find the path specified". A fair amount of headscratching ensued as I could see the IDQ and the HTX there fine. After some time, I found that the IISMT tool had also migrated the extension mappings for .asp, .idq, .htx and just about every other extension too. Of course, they were located in \winnt.... on the old server and \windows.... in the new. Hence they were all screwed up. Posting for the benefit of anyone else who gets caught up in this. I can't see any benefit for transferring extension mapping like this, especially when these are basic 'default' extension handlers (especially for .asp for example) and it doesn't even check to make sure the new ones exist (or attempt to migrate them). So you get a broken configuration out of it in other words. Perhaps anyone from MS reading might like to enlighten me with a cracking reason for this :) AW Tag: IIS/ASP Problems Tag: 342452

    - Error Trying To GET anonymouseuserpass We have a Win2K server (SP4), Exchange 2000 (SP3) and IIS 5. After a reboot I got the following error: The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was 'The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password. So I try MS doc 297989 and run cscript.exe as directed. For the IWAM account things go as expected and I copy down the password. But for the IUSER account I get: Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.1 for Windows Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 1996-1999. All rights reserved. ErrNumber: -2147463164 (0x80005004) Error Trying To GET the Schema of the property: IIS://localhost/Schema/anonymouseuserpass I tried SSL Diagnostics and found nothing of note (no red !).     - How do I publish on a site with Host headers enabled? Normally if you connect to a site with www.domain.com and try to publish to site www.domain.com you get the error that you can't publish to the same site you have opened. What I did in the past was to connect to its IP (example: http://172.16.16.16) and then publish to www.domain.com Now I have host headers with about 10 sites on the same IP. I can't connect to IP to publish to domain since all the sites have the same IP. I'm using subdomains with my host headers. example: http://sub1.domain.com http://sub2.domain.com http://sub3.domain.com etc..... So how do I get this working?     - IIS 5.0 refresh problem. Hi, I have a email web site running on IIS 5.0. From the time I installed this web site on Windows 2000, I observed a change in behavior when compared to the one observed with IIS 4.0. When I login to the web site and click on inbox I could see the new message. But to refresh the page again, when I click on the inbox link or refresh button the page is not getting updated (I know that there are some new messages in my inbox as I could see then using different client interface). If I click on a different folder, like outbox folder, and again on inbox I could see the new messages.     - Permissions for File System and FTP Hi everyone, I'm having problems setting permissions to do what I want in both the file system and FTP. The network's domain controllers are now on 2003 and we're using IIS6 for FTP. I'm trying to create a drop box... that is, people can put a file in folder but can't change it afterwards. Also, nobody should be able to read anybody else's file. If they see the file in the directory listing, that's OK, but they shouldn't be able to open it. This is easily done within our network. The users have Traverse Folder, List Folder / Read Data, Create Files / Write Data, and Read Permissions. They can drag files into the folder but can't open it. Yet, it doesn't work so well on FTP. They can't open the folder and therefore they can't put things in it. Messing with permissions I've gotten it to a point where they can open the folder, put their file there, and not read other people's files...     - IIS 6.0 -> all the sudden you need to enter a password to access Dear all, something strange is happening with our server (is win2003 entreprise with iis 6). Several websites are configured on the machine and working properly (for a while). All of the sudden you need to enter a password and login to enter each of the sites, without anything changed in the configuration. Has anyone had any experience with this?     - How to register CGI executables under IIS 6.0 Dear All, I have created an application using Delphi 7 with add-on CGI Expert, which makes it possible to run CGI-executables in a so-called server-mode. Works very well under IIS 5.0 and 4.0. I understand that under IIS 6.0 I am supposed to register the executables, in the Web application section. The server is running Windows 2003 Server. Unfortunately I do not see such a section anywhere in IIS Manager. I only see Application Pools. For my site I created a new website different from the Default web site in this manager. Below Application Pools I do see an item referring to the virtual directory with alias "scripts" which I created in addition. That's where I placed my executables anyway. Maybe I have to register the executables there? How to register them is the question though, because I cannot see them there in the IIS manager and there is no option to add them or so. Please help! To do this you make a virtual directory and the source is C:\windows\web\printers\ But on a 2003 printcluster all printers are shared from the virtual machine on the local node does not share any printers.     - Problems Installing IIS on XP Tablet Edition A colleague has just rebuilt and configured a Tablet PC - he installed XP Tablet edition with SP1, then installed SP2. I'm trying to install IIS. It is asking for XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD - but I think rather than the SP2 CD it wants an XP Pro CD which includes SP2 - of which we dont have any yet... I've tried feeding it XPSP1 Retail & VLP versions, XP SP2 CD, and even a Win2k3 CD but I cant get any futher than the same point - after it starts to copy a few files, it stops and asks for the location of adsutil.vbs - I cant see this file (or any of the subsequent ones it asks for) on any of the CDs.     - why these ODBC driver errors in new IIS ? I made more webpages based on ASP connecting Access databases successfully running on my previous NT server 40 SP6a having IIS 4.0 Recently I translated them all in a new system based on XP PRO latest (SP2, August 2004) with same settings attentively made deeply, including Jet40 SP8 update separately or by latest SP2.2180 above. Now, my new IIS 5.1 provided by XP PRO above, seems to be not able to run those simple ASP code webpages interacting with Access database through common ODBC connector. Below there are common error messages listed when try to run that webpages: 1) Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005' [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '(unknown)'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. 2) Error Type: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005) [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x758 Thread 0x168 DBC 0x1032024 Jet'. Above there are 2 different cases to fix but based on same kind ASP code (ODBC). How can fix it ? Is this a notorious bug of new IIS so where is the patch ? I could not find any help in all MS Support site. So any suggestion would be appreciated before cancelling this unreliable too dependant IIS ... Where am I wrong or missed ?     - Install IIS in Win 2000 kills Services Access in computer manageme I need to do some web development from my laptop -- VAIO running Win 2000 Pro SP4. I just told the Add/Remove Win Components in the control panes to add IIS. Since then I have not been able to opem the services tree in the computer manahement window. I tried removing IIS (which appears to have worked) but still cannot open the services tree. When I try I just get the hourglass icon and nothing happens. I have to kill the computer management app with the task manager. Does anybody have a clue??????????? I've never seen anything like this before. Is there a fix? A patch?     - problem with DNS entries We have set up a local dns entry on our dns server. this would only work in-house on our network, but that is all we need. the problem is that we have sub domains as well. eg primary would be www.siteone.co.za and then two sub domains as two.siteone.co.za and three.siteone.co.za this works fine. we have three sites, they are redundant in the sense that if the main server goes down, we just switch IP addresses and then can go live again. the problem is that the sites are set up on these three domain entries. one and two work fine, but the third one keeps coming up with a dns error. i have checked the config of the sites in IIS and that all seems exactly the same for all three site. any help would be greatly appreciated.     - how to programatically retrieve application pool identity in IIS 6 I tried to ask this question in VS.NET news groups but folks there refered me to this group. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am creating a setup application for my ASP.NET web site. I need to make several directories in that web writable for the account running ASP.NET application during the installation process - change ACLs on those directories. The problem for me is to find out which windows account will be running the web application I am installing. I need to get this information programmatically from within the installer. I would also prefer a method that will work for IIS 5 as well, although there, I have been told, we could parse machine.config file to extract the identity information.     - setting up web site for file reference I'm trying to setup a web page that all our site PCs can reference for an automatic configuration script (ACS). Right now we are accessing an ACS from outside our facility. We also access a proxy server that is outside our location. When the WAN goes down the users cannot access the ACS and getting to intranet web pages inside our facility doesn't happen. I want user's internet explorer to be able to get to this site using http. I'm using IIS5.0. I've put the necessary file in a folder. I've created a virtual directory that references the folder. I've checked the file browsing check box. I've removed default.htm. When I right click on the virtual directory and choose browse, I get a 404 error. When viewing this web page I want the viewer to see the ACS file. I don't think I want this to be an FTP site/page. I have tried Oracle 8.1.7, 9.2, and 10g client connectivity but nothing works from ASP applications. I have eliminated the Windows Server and the Oracle drivers as a problem. The problem seems to be directly related to IIS 6.0. If there is no valid answer I am left with no choice but to revert back to Windows 2000. My applications worked on Windows 2000 Server and I do not understand nor have I been able to find an answer to the problem in my many hours of research. I am devoted to Microsoft technologies and in my world I would prefer everything be Microsoft.     - Web Service & IIS 6.0 - Getting 401:Unauthorized I have a simple web service in IIS 6.0 that uses Integrated Windows Authentication. I wrote a Windows client that sets the credentials to DefaultCredentials and calls the web service. When the client runs on the IIS 6.0 server itself the web service works fine. However from any remote client I get 401: Unauthorized. The IIS 6.0 is on a domain and the logon I use on IIS 6.0 and on remote machines is the same user.     - IIS permissions settings question I have an MS access file residing on a web server that links to a table on a mapped network drive. The linked table actually resides within another MS access file that resides on a different server. The file mappings appear just fine and I can access the linked table on the mapped drive just fine when I open the table directly in MS Access. However, when the asp page attempts to access the table I get an error: x:\mappeddirectory\linked.mdb is not a valid path. I think it has something to do with the IIS permissions, but I do not know how to resolve it. Has anyone come across this type of problem and can you give some direction on what I need to do to resolve the issue? I can't combine the servers because they serve two independent and isolated functions, but I need to access the dynamic data in order to provide trending and historic information.     - W3WP.EXE 100% CPU We are running IIS 6.0 on a Windows Server 2003 machine. Recently, we have been experiencing poor performance on the website. When I check the Task Manager, I see that the W3WP.exe process is taking 100% (or close to it) of CPU all of the time. When I reboot, the process then acts normally, and the Web Page performs well.     - Redirecting OWA & OMA to default pages Ok, here's what I've got. Exchange 2003 on an Server 2003 box. Have had OWA running using email.domain.com. I did this using a redirect on the default web site and pointed it to an asp file that added in both the /exchange as well as a https. Problem is, if anything hits the default site, it goes right to /exchange, of course. Now we also want to use the OMA feature. So, I've already got aliases that point OMA.DOMAIN.COM to our IP, as well as EMAIL.DOMAIN.COM to our IP. My trend of thought was to setup two new websites under our default, set their default webpage to a redirect page and point to the correct urls. No go. I want users to be able to use http://email.domain.com as well as https://email.domain.com for OWA - I was able to get the plain http redirect working (Until I did something to screw that up!), but couldn't get the https running. Hi I wonder if anyone can help.

I'm running IIS on a Win2K box, I have a variety of ASP sites running on the
server, connecting to a mySQL database.

Recently I have been getting a lot of rs.open errors, I have looked through
the scripts to see if there are any connections or recordsets being left
open but I cannot see any.

I tried increasing the max number of connections allowed for the mySQL
server but the problem has again raised its ugly head.

Are there any monitoring tools akin to object browsers/inspectors available
to identify where the trouble may lie?
