I have a domain name that I would like to point to my personal IIS 6.0 on my
W2K3 box.

I haven't the slightest idea on where to start with this. I have purchased
domains in the past and all I needed to do was point the domain to the new
names servers of my hosting provider. Is this still the case? do I need to
create name servers on my personal system and point the name to it? If so
how do I create the name servers?

Thanks
Delali

the easiest way is for you to get a static ip address from your isp then go
to the domain registration site and tell it the ip to associate with your
domain name. if they don't provide that service ask your isp if they can do
it for you. you should not have to create your own name server... just get
someone to enter a new record to associate your new name with your ip
address.

note, if you can't get a static ip you can still make it work with one of
the services that automatically maps dynamic ip's to domain names.

What services exactly are you referring to? Can you point me to some sites
that I could look into?

Thanks!

You need a DNS server for the domain in question. It can be yours,
your ISP's or a public DNS, but there has to be one. For info on
setting up DNS, check the DNS newsgroups, and see:

the only one i remember right now is http://www.dynip.com/ but i know there
are at least a couple others. but the prefered method is with a static ip
if you can get one from your isp.

and jeff is kind of right. but you don't need a dns server "for the
domain"... all you need is a dns server somewhere to have the information to
associate your domain name with an ip address. as i said that can be done
by the company you bought the domain from, the one i use has a simple method
that i use to go in and just enter the ip address for my domain name and
they enter the proper information into the dns so it gets around the world,
or your isp should also be able to do that for you.
