    - how to avoid SSI file not found? I have a site with several thousand SHTML pages some of which need to include additional info from another source. Most files however don't need this particular include. How can I silently ignore the 404 error? I tried placing a file with   only for every file but that is difficult to manage when many new pages are added. I have a separate application that publishes the true include file for only the pages that need it.     - Response.Flush in ASP terminates the socket connection Hi Folks, I found trought some tests that when I call Response.Flush the IIS server add the header "Connection: close" and terminate the socket with client browser. Can someone confirm if this is the right way to force a connection close in ASP/IIS? Also this behavior seems to be not documented anywhere in MSDN.     - IIS and Win OS I am a newbie and I am confusing to use IIS and Win OS. I learn that Win 2000 goes with IIS 5, how about Win XP? Also, the ways to configure (i.e., installing IIS, virtual directory, ODBC...) are changed from the previous version to the newer version. Can you please show me how to configure these stuff on Win XP. I have tried those books that are old now and still not able to get it through.     - Creating Virtual directory from remote directory Hi, I dont know why I cannot do this so I am posting it here. I have IIS 6.0 environment in my webserver which runs on Win2003. Everything has been working on the server okay. I am trying to create a new virtual directory from remote directory, but it just does not work. The remote server has FAT filesystem and we use NOVELL user account to log on to it. When I tried to create a virtual directory I put the full UNC to the remote directory as the path and also specified the domain/user and password in the authentication. After I created the virtual directory if I try to browse it through the web it says "The network name cannot be found. " Has anyone experienced this? I will appreciate any response.     - webdav auth failing Hi, I've setup a webdav folder on my IIS server under windows server 2003. I am trying to connect to it with windows XP. The web client is enabled, the permissions are correct, I am using Basic Authentication. When I put the URL in when mapping a drive, the authentication dialog appears and I type my credentials in and press ok, and it asks for them again, and again, and again, and I can't access the webdav folder. I have checked everything I possibly know, but can't get it to work. Any idea on what the problem might be? I can browse the share in the IIS admin console.     - Uploading files We currently have two servers. SCO Unix Open Server 5.0.7 I think is the version and a Windows Server 2003. Our website is hosted on our Windows server. I have setup some secure pages on the server so clients can upload data files to us. These data files are just text based files that we import into our collecton software. Currently I have the files uploading to a directory on the Windows server and nofity me via email that they have been uploaded. I then have to move them to a Samba partition on the Unix box. When the files are there I notify the person in the office that the files have been uploaded and she runs menu process in our collection software to load them into our system. I want to be able to have the files uploaded directly to the right directory on the Unix servers Samba partition. I can then modify my script to send email to the proper party. I have a login script that maps the Samba partition to all of our Windows clients, as well as the server. I have tried to modify my upload script to loads the files to the directory on the Samba partition using the UNC path. I have tried using the mapped drive letter.     - IIS + PHP + network share + POST Hello NG, i have an weird problem with IIS 6.0 + PHP 5.0.5. I have enabled "Anonymous access" and "Integrated Windows authentication", because i want to be able to log on the users from the LAN automatically. I should also be possible for other users=B4s to login in via a normal loginpage. Furthermore i have to read and write files from a networkshare. So i have created a new Domainuser with the required rights. This is the one which is used for "Anonymous access". The whole thing works almost fine except for one situation. When a page sends a form with POST i cannot access the network share.     - IIS stops working frequently Hi all, We have windows 2000 server as iis and we are hosting two websites from that machine. everything was fine suddenly what happened i don't known with this machine. when we browse for this website it give error "page could not be displayed". when i run iisreset then it will work properly. and this is happening for every two or three days. because of this i have to keep checking for every 2 or 3 hours.     - IIS Won't Start I have an XP Pro SP2 box (1.5 G of RAM, 2.8 ghz) that will not start IIS. It has not been able to start IIS for a long time, if ever, but this has not been my ASP.NET dev box until now. Now, I need localhost fired up for ASP.NET development. All dependent services are set to automatic start and are running. Attempting to start IIS results in "Not enough resources are available to complete this operation" (event ID 7023). I have Googled my way through the various possible solutions. I do NOT have the infamous HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Rpc\Internet key in the registry, so DCOM port restrictions aren't an issue. I have shut down all unnecessary programs, even briefly shut down my firewall (McAffee) and it makes no difference. I have tried renaming the IIS metabase. A new metabase is created, but still no joy. Event logs have been checked and various command line utilities invoked, but nothing sheds additional light on this. And yes, I uninstalled / reinstalled IIS. Any other ideas, shy of reinstalling the whole OS, which is just not a practical option? IIS runs fine on a nearly identical box on the same network, very similarly set up. But Visual Studio 2003 and VSS are a bit squirrelly and cranky if they're not pointed at localhost, and I have a large complex project to work on.     - Problemed ASP pages on IIS5 - win2000 I have an odd problem. I'm hosting a simple classic ASP site in a windows 2000 server with IIS 5. Just recently, for no apparent reason, the index.asp document will not load immeadiately (will time out after a minute or so). However, I put a another test.asp document in the same directory with the same permissions and I can access it (although with a pause) fine. Then if I reenter the index.asp document, it loads fine...! ?? i works fine for awhile, then the problem starts all over. In some cases, a web site restart will work, other times it won't. What would cause this to happen? I have disabled logging and that doesn't help. Ensured the web site is signed to a IP not virutal, no go.     - Running Apache and IIS on the same box I am attempting to run IIS and Apache on a WIN2003 server with the ltest updates and can't see to get it to work. Do I need the default website, as well as the site I am trying to host? I have set the default site and the site I am trying to host to a custom port, 8350. The default browser points to the source files and the the site is pointing at the address I registered for it in dns, with a :8530. When I go to that addy, I get the conent that is running on apache. I have disabled socket pooling and enter the ip addy for the site (running on IIS) with the :8530,still it does not work. I have re-booted several times and cannot get this to function properly.     - re-enter credentials when moving from HTTP to HTTPS Hi, I have a .NET web application protected by Windows Authentication. Therefore, when accessing the first page, users are prompted to enter their credentials (when not logged on the domain). Most of the pages are using HTTP but one folder is using HTTPS. When moving to this folder, users are prompted again to enter their credentials. Is this normal behaviour? Can this be avoided?     - Script Error 800A0046 - Very Puzzling! I'm new at this IIS stuff, but not dumb! This one really has me stumped. - IIS 5.1 installed on Windows XP w/SP2 - I can run http://localhost/localstart.asp Now I make a copy of localstart.asp -> mystart.asp, same wwwroot directory. I cannot run this, get 800A0046 on line 40 - the first occurrence of GetObject. I brought up file permissions dialogs for each, got them to be nearly identical (some funniness about local Administrators group having special permissions in the case of my copied file). I did everything I could in special permissions. I have only local accounts: Administrators, SYSTEM, Users, Everyone and "VS Developers". For each of these their effective permissions match those of localstart.asp. Still I cannot get past that error! I of course checked the wwwroot directory permissions, but what could that matter, since the file that works and the file that doesn't work are in the same directory. Hello, I've been looking around for documentation on Categorizer Event Sink development, but have so far been unable to find anything solid. MSDN does document the general approach in its SMTP Server chapter, but the actual COM interfaces (such as ICategorizerItem, ICategorizerMailMsgs, etc) are not documented anywhere. Likewise, the only complete sample (called "catfwd", made by Microsoft) is mentioned in http://www.mcse.ms/message920691.html, but is not available anywhere (the uuencoded version in that post is corrupted).     - Losing Access to Remote Virtual Dirs IIS 6.0 We have several web servers running 2003 web edition that will lose acces to a remote virtual directory. When viewing the site via mmc, the vir dirs still exist. By clicking the + sign beside the vir dir and enumerating the structure, the issue goes away.     - File Upload Cache ASP.NET 1.1 IIS 5.1 We have an aspx page used for file upload. A client uses a WebClient object (http-post) to upload a file to the server. IIS is running on an XP Embedded system. We can't afford potentially large files to be cached on the C drive. Are files received by a POST cached on disk? Or streamed straight to disk?     - Frontpage Server Extensions give "Service Unavailable' on x64 Server 2003 I had IIS setup and working on a 2003 (x64) machine. I am attempting to install the Frontpage Server Extensions on it, per the instructions located: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891314 After enabling the emulation mode and installing the server extensions, when attempting to browse to ANY page/folder on the web server, I get a page that says simply "Service Unavailable" Looking at the HTTPERR1.LOG file, I see a message like this (this was attempting to go to "Cofigure Server Extensions" in the IIS console): 2005-11-17 15:37:27 192.168.0.101 3502 192.168.0.101 80 HTTP/1.1 GET /_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll?page=health.htm 503 1 AppOffline MSSharePointAppPool I get a similar message when attempting to go to any of the pages, expect those specify "DefaultAppPool" isntead of the MSSharePointAppPool. Event Viewer shows the following error: "A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' reported a failure. The process id was '832'. The data field contains the error number." Data shows: 0000: c1 00 07 80 Á..? I have stopped/started both app pools several times from the IIS console, no luck. Tried completely restarting IIS again, no luck. If I uninstall the server extensions and set the emulation mode back to false, I can once again access pages.     - Replication of data in a WWW/FTP farm Can anyone recommend a good way to replicate web site and ftp data among members of a web farm. We have one server right now running IIS5 but are looking to go to multiple servers running IIS6 in a farm and want to find a way to replicate published web data to all members of the farm...as well as uploaded FTP data. It is not uncommon for some FTP uploads to be over 1GB so the solution would need to handle larger files effectively. Your suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!     - Memory problem My web server as around 100 web sites, W2k server, IIS5 2GB Ram. The web sites are using ASP and COM+ to access ACCESS databases. Also as SQL server 2000. Since some time ago I noticed that in consumes all the memory available until it reaches 4GB. It could be normal since I have 70 dllhost active (COM and High level isolated memory sites) But, as I do IISreset and stop all the components in the Component Manager it goes down to 2GB of memory use !!!!!!. A Server shutdown will start the memory to 1GB RAM USE, that, I think it is normal .     - COM object access now slow in IIS6??? We have recently migrated a web application to Windows Server 2003 from NT and the web site now runs slow when acessing COM objects. The website provides a front end to a 3rd Party API (a VB COM DLL), we need to create an instance of this DLL to call the methods which connect to the 3rd party's servers. This application ran fine on NT with IIS4 and after creating an instance of the COM object a login call took 1 second and a search call took 3 seconds. The same code in IIS6 now takes 20 seconds for a login and 22 seconds for a search. To narrow it down we created a VB application to perform the same task as the asp pages, on NT it took 1 second and a search call took 3 seconds. On Windows 2003 the VB app took 1 second and a search call took 3 seconds. The problem only occurs when calling the methods on the object in IIS6. It apears that every call to the objects now has an added overhead of 19 seconds!!! I am struggling to find out why this happens, my only train of investigation is around the fact that IIS6 now runs everything out of process, but would have thought that if it adds this overhead many other people would have hit this problem as well.     - Sharing SSL I have a bunch of Web sites on a production server that is completely under my administrative control. Each Web site has a login page. I want to use HTTPS (ssl) for the login page only so that the user's credentials can be secured in transmission. Standard stuff here. My question: I don't want to have to purchase a SSL certificate for each Web site. That seems like a lot of money for the little that I want to be securing. I don't want to cheat "The Man" so I hope I'm not asking for something unethical here. Just wondering how I can use one SSL certificate and provide secure authentication for all the Web sites on the server. FWIW, this is a Windows 2003 Server (Standard Edition) on the Internet. .NET Framework 1.1, and all sites are ASP.NET Web applications. Thanks!     - IIS(http 1.1 500 server error) After i finish install OS(Window XP SP2), i install all the application that i needed which is Ms Office 2003 pro, Ms Visual Basic 6, Ms SQL server 6.5, Ms SQL Server 2000, Power Builder 7 and Power Builder 8.     - IIS 6.0 Web Service Extension I have a virtual directory set up with a WSDL file in it. When i browse to http://localhost/theVD/theFile.wsdl, i got the 404 error. I have managed to overcome this but only when I set the 'All Unknown ISAPI Extensions' to Allow in the Web Service Extension in IIS.     - Cannot access the asp files of the site I have to update a part of my site based on asp. For problems to the ftp server I've send the subdirectory to update to the administrator and he have substituted this subdirectory to the old one. By that moment I can access only the html files of this directory; if I go to an asp page the browser give me a "file not found" error. The rest of site work without problems.     - IIS Problem I am getting an IIS error 1053. IIS is started, but www and ftp are on starting. If I try to restart it I get a 1053 error. I also can not open the IIS shortcut. I try to do a net start and get the service is started. I can not get to my localhost via a browser. I have Apache and Colf Fusions running as well.     - Bringing an external site in-house Hello, We currently host our internal website ourselves, and would like to transfer our external site (currently hosted by an outside provider) in-house and have Internet traffic access our external site from one of our own servers. What are the steps in defining this? I have an available external IP address from our ISP. I'm assuming I have to add some sort of entry in DNS that translates the external IP address to the IP address of our web server. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance! Hi, I'm using Win 2003 and IIS6 I have a web site (which is a sharepoint one), and a virtual directory which run under another application pool. the content of the virtual folder is displayed in IFrames under my first web site. I have a domain with a lot of sub-domains, the active directory mode is Win 2000 mode, not 2003. the security is set to clear/text for the 2 virutal directories. when a user access the root folder, the login is asked and all works fine. but, if the user is a member of a subdomain and if during the first login the user only type his login WITHOUT the domain (toto instead-of domain\toto) then the user is asked a second time when the iframe will display the content of the virtual folder. if the user type domain\username for his initial login, then the user is no longer asked for a password again. any idea? what can I do to prevent this second login? thanks.     - Index service on cluster win2k3 I've installed IIS in cluster configuration (I can't use nlb, only two servers..) and everything goes fine, failover, failback and so on.. But when failover occurs I need to manualy stop and start indexing istance from IIS Manager console in order to make index services working..     - IIS "The requested service is in use" I have two iis servers on the same machine sharing port 80 and an ip address. Thus, I am distinguishing between the two via host header names. I've refreshed the dns server and can access the seperate websites successfully from my LAN, but when I'm outside my LAN I get "The requested resource is in use." This happens only when I try to access the IIS server that is serving simple html/http requests, the other website is accessed fine (which consequently was the first of the two iis servers on this particular machine). This other IIS virtual server is a secure web application server running on http port 80 and SSL port 443 (i.e. a MapPoint Location Server). Furthermore, they exist behind a NAT firewall/router that is forwarding all calls to port 80 and 443 to their ip address.     - Multiple SSL Certificates for one site Apparently, you cannot have multiple ssl certificates on one web site, but I do not understand why. If IIS 5+ allows you to assign multple IP addresses to one site, and you have configured a different domain name for each ip address, why cannot you install a certificate for each domain name for the one site. Apparently, IIS looks up the proper certificate by IP/Port combo, so if IIS allowed you to install multpiple certificates and allowed you to assign the IP address ( or SSL identity ) for each certificate, it seems as if this would work. IIS allows you to set up multiple sites, with multple ip addresses, and multiple certs. But if you can set up multiple ip addresses on one site and since IIS looks up the proper cert based upon the IP/Port combo, why cannot you have multiple certs on one site? I understand the issue with host headers, and how IIS6 has worked around that. What I would like to do is have completely different domain names that are assigned to different IPs, that are configured on one IIS site using multiple identities, to both use SSL.     - absolute URLs XP vs Server OS I develop sites on XP machines and would like to use urls in the format of /<dir>/page.htm in the pages throughout the site. Since XP does not allow you to create multiple sites, only multiple virtual directories, so the proper format needed is /<virtualdirectory_name>/<div>/page.htm. Obviously this does not work when publishing the site to production. The only way I know to accomplish this is to make the site I am working on the default site in XP.     - IISMT "Acess denied" Hi, During migration from windows server 2k to windows standard 2k3, I try to migrate the iis configuration using the iis migration tool (iismt). I followed the instructions and the parameters were set correctly. But I received an error that prevented the configuration migration. This error was: "The IIS Migration Tool was unable to connect to the remote computer. Access is denied." According to the documentation, I may supply the username & password in parameters ( /user username & /password password ) or the migration tool will connect using the username & password that I've logged in with. In my case, both servers (2k & 2k3) are domain controllers in the same domain having a common domain administrator username & password. Either entering the username & password in the parameters or not, the iis migration tool does not connected to the source server. I tried to run the RPC Ping utility and it does not connect: rpingdos -p tcpip -s -n servername Binding failed with return code 0x6, The Protocol sequence is not supported EPC Binding returned (0x21) The RPC Call failed Could not bind using these parameters: protocol sequence = nacn_ip_tcp network address = servername endpoint = 2256 UUID = (long string) Ideas?     - Authorization Manager & Non Microsoft LDAP? Hi: I am attempting to move an IIS 5, Win2000 website to a new IIS 6, Win2003 installation. Up to this point we were using an NT domain for authentication/authorization for both FP Extensions and WebDAV. The campus has a non-Microsoft LDAP service where campus wide accounts are stored for both faculty and students. I would like to move to using that service for authentication/authorization on the new web server. I have begun looking at Authorization Manager to use against the campus LDAP server, but have not found any examples of using it against non-Microsoft LDAP.     - Accessing/Dowloading certain filetypes... Running IIS 6 Browser: IE and/or Mozilla I have an application that allows users to store documents on my server. When they need to access/download the documents, my application copies their document to a staging directory (because they're renamed to a unique filename for storage), then redirected to the staged file for download. This works great for most files. However, I have discovered that for certain filetypes (.asp, .exe, .xfdl), the user gets a message box with the message "Internet Explorer cannot download myfile.xfdl from www.mysite.com. Internet Explorer was unable to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." I have looked on the server, and the file is actually there. IIS just will not let the user access/download it. Mozilla downloads an htm page with a "page cannot be found" error. Any thoughts? The application in question is a minimal project website with extremely basic SourceForge-like features such as a to-do list and the user can upload and download files. We installed Service Pack 1 on our Windows Server 2003 Ent Ed. box and now
IIS refuses to start! The IIS Admin service runs, but the WWW Service won't
start. It consistently fails with a b-s error code that Windows doesn't
recognize, and I can't find a reference to online.

I've removed IIS and reinstalled it.

I rolled back the Service Pack Install. And even reinstalled it when that
didn't work.

I've tried damn near everything, and I am STUCK.

PLEASE, somebody more versed in IIS admin, lend me a hand, I have no idea at
this point!

It would be helpful to share the b-s error code that you do not recognize.

Without additional information provided, I can only recommend to rebuild the
server since you have already done a couple of other destructive
reinstallation actions that render any investigation useless. Exact sequence
to reproduce an issue matters, and without a sequence, I can only recommend
to rebuild starting from SP1.

Most of the times that I see upgrades fail, it is related to some customer
related configuration of security-hardening steps.
